Really like the transparent outcome of the facade. Hope the atrium facade will be similar or even more transparent so we can see the spiral sculpture and the two towers remain visually separate.

thanks for the update tom!
too bad the towers won`t be about 30meters higher, so they`ll look rather fat and compact, especially on a -otherwise stunning - perspective like the last pic..
in contrast to goschio i think the fascades are rather reclecting (only the - later - inner parts of the northern tower seem to be more transparent), but i also hope that there will be a clearly visible difference between the cladding of the atrium compared to the fascade of the towers themselves.

read an article, saying the sculpture does -not- belong to the ecb and they have no great interest in it anyway. it will propably be 'thrown away' thereafter.

What a pity, this tower is completely beautiful, but it's far from the main skyline :/

erbse
February 21st, 2012, 12:47 PM
I think it works well as a solitary outpost, or in some way a forerunner of the Frankfurt skyline.

The European Central Bank is one of the most powerful European institutions.
Inside the main skyline cluster, it'd be just another skyscraper. That way its special meaning for Frankfurt and Europe is emphasized.

In addition, I think it should remain as a solitary tower there. It'd destroy much of the impact if other towers were built around it (which isn't planned anyway). It wouldn't make sense to extend the skyline in this direction as well.

They seem to have planned a press-conference room high up in the tower though, where journalists will get to go. We should start The SSC-news agency and send a team of journalists there for press-conferences regularly. :)

Twenty or even 30 m higher and the building wouldn't look as fat and plump, as it will look now.

Besides, isn't this thread in the wrong section? The building will feature a spire (not an antenna) that will bring the height to 220m (as far as I know).

Are those cross-braces really work structurally? or just decoratives?

just found THIS (http://www.ecb.europa.eu/ecb/premises/construction/structural/html/index.en.html) on the ECB homepage:

The structural design of the two office towers is based on reinforced concrete frame constructions. The north tower will consist of 45 floors and the south tower 43. Steel trusses and connecting platforms in the atrium join the two towers together to create a single static structure.

To be honest, I think the design is already dated. The fashion of tilted walls and diamond shaped glass boxes was big some years ago. But now it's already cliché and the building isn't even finished. That wouldn't be that bad, if it wasn't towering over the entire city. I think it should have been planned close to the highrise businesscluster.

So whats trendy right now? Straight walls and boxy glass boxes? Or cylindrical cones with metal facade again. Keep in mind trends come and go. This tower will stand there for at least the next 50 years. So its compelty irrelevant what is trendy this year or next year. Quality is what matters.
