City swells to 500,000 population
Gold Coast Bulletin, Friday 25th February 2005
The Gold Coast's permanent population has reached the magical 500,000 mark, fuelled by mostly interstate and overseas migrants flocking to the city to make it their new home.
The new population figures confirm the Gold Coast as Australia's fastest growing city, with an average 18,500 extra people arriving here each year.

Population growth
With a population expected to increase from an estimated 2.65 million in 2004 to 3.7 million by 2026, South East Queensland is one of Australia's fastest growing regions. The Gold Coast leads the way, with numbers forecast to rise to 814,500 in 2026.
From 1999 to 2004, Gold Coast City population grew by 3.5 percent - almost double Brisbane's growth of 2.2 percent.

The increase in the G.C. population is a little misleading. In June 2005, the ABS changed the boundary of the G.C. to include Beenleigh and Mt Tamborine which increased the population by about 13% or 65,000 people.

Wasn't that just the GC statistical division? I thought the GC city council boundaries stayed the same. In this instance, it might be correct that it just passed 500k for the LGA because it was about 489,000 last year.
Qld govt should just hurry up and call Brisbane and GC one Statistical Division.

According to ABS the Gold Coast urban area pop'n was 554,628 as of June 30, 2006, so now Australia's 6th largest city.
As DeejayT mentioned the GC urban area was recently redefined (resulting in a loss of area for Brisbane urban area), which increased it's population considerably so it was quite a jump from last year when the population was 482,037 (as of 30 June 2005).
All the pop'n stats across Australia will be redefined soon as the 2006 Census figures showed that we have been growing faster than estimated, so when the revised regional growth figures are released in July most city populations will get a further boost.

The boundaries are still the same. Tamborine makes up around 10% of the 65,000 people in Beaudesert Shire.
Urban area wise it would be a bit of a stretch to include Tamborine at this stage. Is Canungra in the same boat?

It's not the Council boundaries that have changed, it's the ABS statistical boundaries and what they include in the Gold Coast urban area.

Yes the GC has certainly increased in population as any long-time resident will know. Not only in permanant residents but also in transient visitors. Unfortunately, the city hasn't got the infrastructure to cope with the increase in population/cars, etc.

Yes we have roadworks..but no sooner are they completed they quickly are unable to cope. I also refer to as intrastructure... the hospital. From what I have heard it is supposed to be the busiest in Australia. If you are unfortunate to have to go there...make sure you take a long book, drink, food and forget any plans for the next four/five hours. If you are the unfortunate seeking help and in a lot of pain...tough. Roadwork hassles are nothing. Its the ever growing population coming to the Gold Coast that is the problem.

wow, someone really should give they guy who stated that a multipication table.
I mean sure, theres a big difference, but its still a fair percentage off being double.

Yes this is true from my experience!
The new teaching hospital at Griffith University should take some pressure off the public health system and the new public transport corridor running through it - to Cooloongatta - should hopefully do the same for PT, and provide some sort of relief to what seems like perpetual roadworks.
