Uppsala is one of the fastest growing towns in Sweden. I think it was something with 2000-2100 new apartment per year so its kinda much since this city dont build on the hight, because of a law making it illegal to build higher then the historical buildings, the cathedral and the castle etc
but still there are some interesting new things,

this is the newest office building(on Kungsgatan) which is going to be build, if you look at the average on the new buildings you'll see that the houses built is getting taller and taller, but still no skyskrapers ;)

the new Congress house, finally approved after 40 years of "polish parliament" it will cost around 60-65 million € or half the price of TT(?) but it will only be 37meter high, some danish architect firm won the compitition, so its danish design

the station area will be remade, new houses and the central station will be renovated. new buildings, hotels,streets,squares etc. This area is growing very much, more and more people travel by train and buses, today 30 000 travels are made per day, in 5 years it will be up to 60 000 travels per day

Yes, unique and VERY strange. I'm not sure if I really like it, it's so quadrangular. The construction is planned to start in April, and the demolition of the last old building in the quarter, Bodénhuset (1887), started yesterday.
The architect is Henning Larsen. I think it's the same architect as the new opera house in Copenhagen.

I have never heard of a law, but you could say it's an unwritten law or a mentality here, not to built higher than the base of the castle.

yes, we got this law making it illegal to build higher houses then the cathedral etc, because then our famous skyline would "die", they think
Haven't you heard about the Scandal house, which was built at the begining of the 20th century, it was a few meters higher then the university building, a big scandal!

Uppsala-Mehedeby is the longest motorway project in the history of Sweden,

E4 Uppsala–Mehedeby är Sveriges längsta motorvägsbygge någonsin. 78 km ny motorväg ska öppnas för trafik 15 oktober 2007. Vägen är en viktig länk mellan södra och norra Sverige. Totalt beräknas den kosta 3 miljarder kr. Då ingår projektering, marklösen, arkeologiska utgrävningar, mm. Den mest trafikerade sträckan, Uppsala–Björklinge, får betongbeläggning.

Vägen byggs för
bättre framkomlighet – nästan 30 minuters tidsvinst Gävle–Stockholm
bättre trafiksäkerhet – 4 döda, 18 svårt skadade/år på nuvarande E4
bättre miljö – 70% av nuvarande E4 går på den oskyddade Uppsalaåsen.

There will be 102 new bridges, quite much for 78km

A south korean company called Vectus want to test their podcars/spårbilar in europe and they want to build the test track in Uppsala, or in some "shitty" town in the Netherlands, but it looks like Uppsala will win, we all hope
it would be awesome if we could get it here :D if htey choose Uppsala, then they'll start building now in summer and it will be ready in December, this year!!

Spårbilar går på spår några meter över marken. De drivs automatiskt med el, och systemet kan planera trafiken så att det inte blir stopp eller köer.

• Medelhastigheten är 40 kilometer i timmen i tätorterna och 200 kilometer i timmen utanför. Bilarna kan ligga mycket tätt även vid höga hastigheter utan att riskera att krocka.

• Även barn, handikappade och de utan körkort kan använda bilarna.

• I vissa system kan bilarna även köras med elmotor på vanlig väg.

• Det är möjligt att ha egen bil, att dela den med flera andra, eller att åka kollektivt.

Ett sydkoreanskt företag vill testa spårbilar i europeiska förhållanden. Uppsala kan få testbanan - företaget fattar beslut före sommaren. Markägaren Akademiska Hus har bett om ett förhandsbesked om bygglov.

Företaget Vectus har ännu inte fattat beslut om var de förlägger sin testbana, men enligt kommunalråd Niclas Malmberg (mp) står det nu mellan Uppsala och en stad i Nederländerna.
—Det är inte helt säkert att de väljer Uppsala. Men vi har informellt fått veta att de är mycket intresserade, säger Niclas Malmberg.
Han säger att om Vectus väljer Uppsala kommer det inte att kosta kommunen någonting. Samtidigt skulle det kunna ge kommunens arbete med spårburen kollektivtrafik en skjuts, hoppas han.

Förhandsbesked för bygglov
En ansökan om förhandsbesked för bygglov inkom i går till kommunen från Akademiska Hus, markägaren för den aktuella tomten vid Rosendal.
—Vi försöker ha framförhållning. Kontakter med företaget har gått via kommunen, som frågat oss om vi velat upplåta marken, säger Akademiska Hus vd Hans Antonsson.
Vectus väntas fatta beslut inom "tre, fyra, kanske fem veckor", säger Uppsala kommuns översiktsplanerare Jan Graffner. Om valet faller på Uppsala tror kommunen att bygget av banan påbörjas under sommaren, och att anläggningen är färdig i december.
—Vi ser gärna att Vectus etablerar sig här, och har försökt bygga upp ett nätverk som kan jobba för detta, säger Jan Graffner.

Rätt beslutsgång
En som uppenbarligen inte hör till detta nätverk är Liv Hahne (m), vice ordförande i gatu- och trafiknämnden.
—Jag har bara hört rykten om testbanan. Inget politiskt beslut är fattat i vare sig gatu- och trafiknämnden eller kommunstyrelsen, de två politiska instanser som detta kan gälla. Jag blir lite förbenad om det här inte går rätt till, säger hon.
Men Niclas Malmberg menar att det bara handlar om en företagsetablering, att det inte kommer att kosta kommunen någonting, och att det därför inte är något märkligt i att gatu- och trafiknämnden inte underrättats.

Surface parking lots in cities are not a good idea for a number of reasons. :down: Good to hear they're making something out of this one! :)
