The last years a lot of habours in Danish cities have been converted into residential areas, and a lot more is planned. So what do you do if your city is placed in the middle of the country? You makes some lakes.
That is exactly what Herning is doing right now. Some years ago it was decided that a new road newwork was to be build around the city (including some motorways) and the city saw this as a great oppotunity. They needed a lot of sand for the road construction, and it was decied to get than from areas around the city and make some lakes.
The biggest project is the "Fuglsang Sø". The lake will be 25 ha and there will be build around 550 apartments around it. There will also be 2 beaches.
The lake is almost digged out now, and within the next few months it will be decided who shall build the first stage.
Some impressions of the final area, which is in the northern part of Herning. This is just old renderings, no design of the buildings have been made yet.

And here a photo I took last spring:

There are also plans to make a larger lake on the other side of the road (of the 2 rendering). That one will be quite long and used for all kind of watersports.
Finally a photo of mine showing some of the smaller lake (the one to the left on the rendering):

Will there be any fish in the water?

Lake "construction" ... what an interesting concept! Denmark has such a huge shoreline, and now they feel like creating more waterfront locations inland. Actually I don't blame them one bit ... having a body of water close by is a great feature that can contribute considerable to the quality of life.
And of course "creating" lakes as a result of the freeway building project is almost a natural process (no pun intended). The only thing I'm not altogether happy with is the shape of that future lake ... it looks disappointingly artificial. :(
But overall I think this is a great concept! :okay: Thank you for the thread, mlm! :) I know you'll keep it updated. Very fine!

I'm not really sure;)

Which of them do you mean? All 3 lakes are pretty close to being finished now (the one in the last pic is done). If 're talking about the one to the right on the 3rd last pic then I'll kind of agree with you. It looks very artificial on the rendering. I guess it wont be that bad in reality, afterall you don't really notice the shape much when you're on ground level.

Thanks, Mikael! :) Actually I was talking about the lake in the first 2 pics. ;)
But of course you're right: once you're there the straight lines probably sort of vanish because you're enjoying the experience.

Oh okay WH:)
I just found a few more renders and images. They're all from a pdf file, so the quality could be better.
First the "Fuglsang Sø" from the first 3 renders:

And here a photo, it's probably 2 years old or so. The "big" lake is the one to the left of the 3rd last render. It's called Kraftværkssøen (because it's next to the powerplant):

And finally the big one (right one on the 3rd last render). This one is called "Knudmosesøen", and here's a drawing from ground level:

Ah! Thanks for the additional info, mlm! :)
I must say that "Fuglsang Sø" sounds much more romantic than "Krafværksøen." ;) Of course it'll take a while for the trees to grow so that the dear flying feathered friends can actually find a pleasant home @ Fuglsang Sø ...

Whoops, I see I spelled it wrong the first time, it's actually "Kraftværkssøen" - Not that it makes a big difference though;)
There is supposed to be a lot of trees close to all 3 lakes, but yes it will of course take some some time for them to grow big.
I hope we'll get some better weather soon, then I better go and take some pics myself:)

Lol, I'll forgive you for the misspelling, mlm! :D
And yes: I see all of Europe is suffering from an enormous cold wave! :( Even the Portuguese are complaining. :pet: I hope it'll soon be over, for all of you! :)

Now that's a cool project! I guess it will be quite warm in the water in the summer there, the lakes doesn't look that deep.

Yes they're not that deep:
Fulgsang Sø (the one with he residentials): 4½ m. deep
Kraftværkssøen & Knudmose Sø: 7 m. each

It`s cool to live beside water, but imo this housing project is boring.

I don't get it. How can you judge the housing project when it's not even designed yet? As written the buildings are not even designed yet.
I could understand if you though the whole idea of making an artificial lake was stupid. But to call a residential project that is not even designed yet boring seem a bit weird to me. Maybe you can tell us how it will look, I'm sure a lot of people here in Herning will be extremly interested:?

Please don't be so harsh on sander, mlm. :) I'm afraid I almost said pretty much the same thing :hammer: ... but then I figured I'd better not. ;)

My intention was surely not to be harsh on Sander or anyone else. I just find it odd that someone would find it boring without even knowing how it will end up. But hey, everyone is allowed to think what they want:)

Oh, didn`t notice that sentence. Before when I was looking at renderings I tought that the shape of the buildings is correct.

Yes, I read this thread before replying, but somehow "automatically" and without concentrating.

No problem at all Sander. I had a few  last night and I think my post came out worse than it was supposed to.
I just need to stay away from here when I'm drunk:D
