View Full Version : Best or favorite sports city in the northeast?

Yeah, I know again this has nothing to do with skyscrapers, but it involves cities and stuff.

What city in the NORTHEAST do you believe is the best "SPORTS TOWN" of them all. All the cities I have down have at least one major North American sports franchise in NFL, NHL, NBA, or MLB. Heck, some of these may have more than just those, some might have other sports facilities, college/university teams maybe worth mentioning.

Heck, you don't even have to think which one is the best and you can put down your favorite sports city if you want. :)

I think they're all pretty good for sports, but I think Boston is tops.

I voted Boston. 2004 World Series Champions, Red Sox, after doing the unbelieveable 3-0 deficit comeback against the YANKEES! New England Patriots, Super Bowl Champions 3 out of the last 4 years including this year. The Celtics are first in the Atlantic Division of the NBA as well! The Bruins aren't playing this year, but they had an awesome team last year in the NHL until the stupid Canadiens beat them last year.

Philadelphia is doing well in all their sports teams right now as well, too bad they haven't had any titles to go with them.

But they're all good for sports and the people of those cities LOVE their teams! :)

Boston. It have been named the best sports city in like 2 outta three years. If you come to Boston, you are bound to see Bostonians root for their team even if they suck like the Celtics last year. Yep we still rooted for them.

Thank you, lol! I don't like the Montreal Canadiens. I felt Boston had a much better team last year than the Canadiens, me and a few of my friends in this series cheered on Boston to go far in the playoffs, even though I am not a big Bruins fan. They are one of the best-loved teams and one of the ORIGINAL SIX. To see Boston lose the way they did, being up 3-1 and losing to Montreal, and the second time in the last few years they lost to Montreal in the playoffs, I didn't like that.

I can certainly believe Boston being the best city for sports, because you have seen it and know it, Boston fans are CRAZY about their sports teams, no matter how good or bad they do. Someday I would like to come to Boston to see a Red Sox game or something maybe when the Tigers (my fav baseball team) play there.

My closest sports town, of course, of all these would be Buffalo. While I think the Bills are one of the most loved teams in the NFL, I actually went to Buffalo for a TON of Sabres games in the last two years before the NHL lockout. I was to 1 game in 2003 and to 7 games in 2004, and I think the fan support increased the last year and the tickets were the cheapest in the league. :) I would never want the Sabres to ever leave Buffalo and they won't, and I support them for being a small market team. I don't like the Leafs either. I am amazed Buffalo has those teams for a small market, but I believe it works very well, when Toronto, Southern Ontario, and Rochester are closeby.

I'm actually not that much of a football fan. I just check scores once in a while, though. :)

Best teams and best fans: Boston. The Pats have a 117 consecutive home game sell-out streak that includes a game played with two feet of snow covering the stands. Boston fans as a whole are more loyal than any others, except possibly Green Bay.

^^That's because there is no other place in the country that can even come close to the obsession that Boston has over the Sox (except for maybe Green Bay), this city lives and dies with their every move. There is no competition, Boston is definitely the best sports city in the NE and the country. Philly is a good sports town, but it just doesn't measure up to Boston. Philadelphians may be more obsessed with the Eagles than Boston is with the Pats...but we still beat you guys in the Super Bowl so I guess that doesn't matter too much....checkmate.;)

Right now, Boston is the best sport city because of what happened in the last 5 years. The celtics had made it to the playoff for about four straight years(I think) and now seems to have a good chance again with Antoine and Payton back. New England Patriots had won 3 Superbowls in 4 years. Bruins had made it to the playoff 2 years straight. Red Sox made it to the playoff for 2 years and won a championship. Even the Revolution(men soccer team) almost won the championship but lost to the Galaxy on double overtime. These great years maybe over soon though. :ohno:

March 8th, 2005, 09:42 AM
It's pretty pointless to argue over whether or not Philly has as many dedicated fans of any Philly team as there are diehard Sox fans. For US/Canadian sports, there are four groups of fans head and shoulders above the rest: Sox fans, Packers fans, Leafs fans, and Cards fans. Out of them all, Cards fans are probably the most knowledgeable and friendly, and Pack and Sox fans are the most dedicated. When we say that most of New England lives and dies with the Sox, we're not kidding. Didnt you see that World Championship parade? There were literally thousands of people holding up pictures of dead relatives, crying with happiness, saying "Thank you Sox, now my (fill in dead relative title here) can rest in peace!" Ridiculous? Yes. But honest emotion? Also yes. If Bush got assassinated on the same day the Sox beat the Yankees, I can promise you the evening news cast would start with news of the Sox victory and follow it with "Also in tonight's news, the President has been shot. But first, more from Fenway."

Even if it is pointless, Shawn you obviously have no idea about Eagels fans. When the Eagles made it to the SuperBowl teh entire city went on vacation. Jacksonville became Jacksadelphia. All the news channels in the city went all Eagles and did 90% of their broadcasting time about the Birds. One Channel (NBC 10) even changed the network logo (the peacock) into an eagle. You say you live in Tokyo so hwo would you know what American and/or Canadian sports fans are like nowadays?

I think he meant as all sport as a whole, meaning celtics fan, bruins fans, sox fans, and patriot fans. The eagles most likely have more obsessed fans than Pats because most of Massachusetts team are doing pretty good right now and making to the playoffs. Eagles are pretty much the only team that made the closest to a championship.

Killa, I spent the first 18 years of my life in Boston (not a burb, but central Hyde Park) and I come home for at least one month twice a year. I also have the Japanese version of DirectTV, and thus can watch ESPN, ESPN2 and NESN in my apartment in Tokyo. Please, dont assume to question my level of US sports knowledge simple because I have spent 9 months a year for the past 4 years in Tokyo.

It's great that the Eagles had such support this year and the past fews years that the team has been strong. It still doesnt reach the level of support and adoration the Sox have enjoyed for the past 100 years in New England. You wont find many people outside of Philly who will agree that the Eagles have more devoted fans than the Sox, and I think the results of this poll prove so. You even have New Yorkers admitting that Sox loyalty is amazing.

Need I repeat? Thousands of crying people holding photos of dead loved ones, with signs reading "Thank you Sox, now my Grandpa can finally rest in peace!"

I'm from Baltimore, But I gotta say Philly is the best sports city in the Northeast or the country for that matter as far as fan support. Boston is second in the Northeast. As I said before: "I ain't gonna touch the Sox". By obsessions, I would agree with Boston, but I find that the general classless-ness of their fans precludes me from actually voting for them. Maybe it's just the "few ruining it for the many", but just about every knucklehead sports fan I've run into recently has been a Boston fan of some sort.

I may be somewhat biast, but I believe Pittsburgh is tops....and coming in a close second is Boston.

BUT....here's my question. With the Boston sports teams, you can't consider them just Boston. Look at the Pats - they've got fans in RI, CT, VT, NH, Maine. It's more of a regional thing.

I have a friend from RI who is a hardcore Red Sox fan and a hardcore Pats fan. He was in Pittsburgh with me one Sunday during a Steelers game and thought that the atmosphere was fantastic. People everywhere walking in black and gold with Terrible Towels chanting "Here We Go Steelers."

You don't get that on gameday for the Patriots because their stadium is in secluded Foxboro. When I visited RI, my friend took me to Gillette Stadium and I couldn't believe it was in the middle of NOWHERE! It doesn't have that fantastic feeling that Pittsburgh does where you can walk all over town knowing that everyone there hates the opponent as much as you.

The Red Sox, however, I believe have a great town atmosphere. I was there while the Sox were playing the Yankees and it was awesome seeing all the hoopla over the Sox.

But I truly don't believe it has the same feeling as Pittsburgh.

As for the other teams on the list, I certainly don't think Buffalo is good. They only have one major team and that's a joke.

Baltimore is a good competitor for sporting atmosphere, as is Philly. I think NYC is too big and DC is filled with bad politicians who don't care about sports.

So I am sticking with Pittsburgh atop the list and Boston in a close second.

It is easy to be a fan when your teams constantly win championships. I remeber when Foxboro Stadium was half empty back in the 80's and 90's. Try being a devoted Bills fan some time. They fill Rich Stadium regularly for what basicaly amounts to ritual toture each Sunday. Now that is a true sports fan.

That's not always true. You see the Red Sox? Heck they didn't win til last year and the 86 years in between, fans still come and load up Fenway Park. The Celtics and Bruins pretty much fell off the championship run in the past decade and still fans go crazy about them. (maybe not Bruins anymore since the NHL lockout) All we now need is people to go crazy for the MLS and we got five teams to root for.

I know the easy response is to say that good fans are always faithful, but DC hasn't had a real successful team in a long time, this year the wizards did better than they have in a long time and I thought the city was pretty good with their support, The 'skins haven't been good lately, and they have plenty of support, the caps, they suck, went to the stanley cup, got swept, but still there's a lot of loyalty and the nats are new.

The bad politicians have nothing to do with it, normal people live here just like everywhere else, it's the media perception of it that makes it sound like it's just boring ass politicians and gov't employees around here.

I'm not saying it's that great but of all the cities up there, DC has had the worst success due to bad mgmt., with some successful runs, I'm positive it could be a hell of a lot better.

And, the Maryland Terrapins are right here, and they're very much followed, G'town is when they're alright, and high school basketball around here is very big, so before you bash DC you should look a little bit deeper.

IMO Boston is the best, Philly is second, NYC is third, but I think NYC could take second and DC could close the gap with the others and be around B'more's level.

Maybe you're living in a cave, then. Come pay us a visit sometime between September and May and see for yourself. Not to mention the AAA Bisons are quite popular during the summer. And then there's a slew of the "other" sports here such as indoor lacrosse and soccer which field some pretty good teams and have some decent fan support, though they're relatively unknown outside the area (or probably in any other city with a team for that matter). We're probably not #1, but definitely top 10 or even top 5. Depends on what your scope is really.

Another index could be team popularity vs. market size. Based on that ranking, probably only Green Bay manages better, for football at least.

here's a link for anyone that questions our loyalty to the eagles down here. it's from the boston globe.

http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/articles/2005/01/28/brotherly_love/

and eagles fans definitely showed passion for the team down in jacksonville this past february.

The scene mimicked the Eagles-friendly ratio that had inundated Jacksonville through the week. Philadelphia fans were everywhere, seemingly outnumbering their Patriots counterparts by more than 5-1. They even overwhelmed the New England pregame party beside the stadium, where the rock band Kansas played to a sun-splashed crowd that showed much more Eagles green than Patriots blue.

I won't call you ignorant. But Buffalo is a crazy sports town...no city in America wraps its self around its sports teams like Buffalo does. Boston and Philly are all awesome sports cities, and I would give them the edge only cuz they have more ML teams. In the 90s the Bills were in the top 5 in attendance in both the NFL and NHL...and lead all of AAA baseball in attendance a number of years in the late 90s and early 00s.

And as Jim Rome always says..."No team means as much to its city as the Bills do to Buffalo. The NFL is so much better when the Bills are winning." Romey couldn't have set it more perfectly.

Also, Buffalo invented tailgating...hence one of our 50 different nicknames, "tailgating capital of the world"

While you're technically correct, even that 1/3 full is more than the capacity of many minor league parks, and space that over a 72 (?) game home season, and you lead the league in attendance. Also, the same is true, to a degree, with the majors as well. I would venture a guess that most of those games (except for the teams with the smaller stadiums such as Boston) don't pass half full most of the time. It's only when the Yankees or Red Sox or Braves come to town that the place sells out. It's not like a football season where there's only 8 games - you have 3-4 games a week for the entire summer! Ehh...I'll go tomorrow...

While not of the same caliber as the Bills and Sabres, they probably carry a larger and more dedicated fan base than most minor league teams. They also seem to have more of a history as well, I believe they were MLB back in the late 1800's or so (ancient times!).

The stadium was built to seat 19,000 or so, and designed to be expandable with an upper deck. The intent was to try to lure the Montreal Expos, I believe. I don't know if I would have liked that or not...

Living in Baltimore most of my life, I'd say the people there are mad sports fans, but the city lacks some teams. The Orioles and the Ravens rank amongst the top attendance rates in the MLB and NFL, respectively, regardless of their records, and Johns Hopkins lacrosse is easily as popular as any professional sport. But the lack of a professional basketball and hockey team hurts us in this poll (even though the NBA has been trying to give Baltimore a team for years, but the city has been turning them down).

Buffalo could use a major league team...they have the people, and if there was a hometeam here, we would abandon the retarded thought of liking the Yankees for some god awful reason. LOL

Buffalo needs some growth if it wants to beat out some other cities for a team IMO, we need to give the league a reason to come here.

just some comments on baseball in buffalo. the bisons were the first team in minor league baseball history to draw more than 1 million people in a season (they did this in 1992 or 1993). buffalo regularly lead all of minor league baseball in attendance for a span of 4, 5, or 6 years. (for the record, sacramento now leads minor league baseball, with memphis, louisville, and round rock also high up there.) because of how well baseball was doing in buffalo, there were rumors about moving the pittsburgh pirates to buffalo. the bisons were the aaa affiliate at the time, and so the pirates' organization was familiar with buffalo. when the money to build pnc park was set aside, there was no need for the pirates to move, so buffalo then returned to a normal aaa city. attendance dropped somewhat, probably because the novelty wore off for some people. buffalo still is in the top 10 or top 15 in attendance for the season, and they have a solid fan base.

buffalo is a very good sports town in my opinion. much better than any city in the south, like miami or atlanta. but philly is definitely the best sports town.

NBA, NHL, NFL, MLB...

Buffalo - Bills, Sabres

Pittsburgh - Steelers, Pirates, Penguins

Baltimore - Ravens, Orials

Philly - 76ers, Eagles, Phillies, Flyers

Boston - Patriots, Celtics, Bruins, Red Sox

NYC - Jets, Giants, Mets, Yankees, Islanders, Rangers, Knicks

Washington DC - Redskins, Senators?

I guess you have to look at the amount of people in each city, the amount of teams in each city, and how well devoted the fans are in each city per capita...Boston, Buffalo and Philly are the top teams taking that into consideration, followed by NYC.
