View Full Version : Age Restriction to use Forums...

Jan,

Maybe introducing an 18 years and over forum, Skyscrapercity, can improve the forums. In my regional forum there are too many under 18 users posting ridiculous threads or immature replies!

Something to look into how administering an age restriction to the forums in the future.

There's better ways in dealing with immature forumers, like warnings and brigs. I wouldn't support an age restriction either.

Would it be crazy to have a subforum where forumers would propose to ban a certain forumer? The person proposing the ban would have to write a convincing argument and list significant evidence as to why the forumer should be banned.

Then, other forumers would vote on the poll "yes" or "no." In additon to this, other forumers could post reasons for/against the banning. The forumer in question may also post a defense to the claims. After a certain ammount of votes are receieved, the poll is closed. If at the end of the poll, most forumers chose no, then the forumer can stay, and another ban can't be proposed for another 2 weeks. If most forumers chose yes, than the forumer is banned for 2 weeks. After these 2 weeks, the forumer is on probation for another 2 weeks. After these 2 weeks, the process can be started again. However, on the second time, the user is banned for good.

Wow. Maybe that was a bit harsh, but who knows, maybe it could work. Any thoughts?

I remember having the same idea a long time ago... ostracisation.
the Staff will select a bunch of the worse trolls, and then we'll vote on who we want to see brigged for a week :D
but you have a good plan, it's just that I'm certain the guy will get pissed at everyone, even if he does stay, and will try to get his revenge on those who wanted him out ;)

Exactly. The system would work great in an ideal situation, but unfortunately, the system can be easily abused.

There is a thread in city vs city forums that depicts pornography. If there were an age restriction, things like this would not get a view.

This is ridiculous. It won't work, and you'd deprive SSC of one of their biggest contributors, under 18s. And yes there are by-the-rules blokes (and girls) in SSC UNDER 18.

It wasnt just under 18's viewing that thread in city vs city. An age restriction would be stupid, and I only being 14 would just pretend to be someone else and lie about my age.

How about this idea:

Every time a thread starts that is deemed 'unfit' (but not enough to delete it), an administrator can impose a 'special block' so that no one registered below AGE 16 can see the thread. That would probably work better. You'd just have to make it so that they can't change their age though. I don't know how this might be achieved and all. It's just an idea.

And NO, do not enforce an age restriction, especially one for people under 18.

I'd support that idea.

Benefits:

1) We get rid of unwanted forumers who make the site less enjoyable.
2) It'd encourage the reporting of rule abusers
3) It'd be fun! I figure such a program would spark community involvement, too. It's fun beating the bad guys ;)

Of course, admins/mods should be able to ban somebody if they see fit, trial or no trial.

Are you outta your stupid crazy mind. I wanna know much about buildings and architecture because I want to grow up being an architect and your are trying to prevent me from going to the only site that gives such infromation. You probably think the replies are immature, it was probably a joke or a sarcasm that you just don't understand. If this was ever imposed, it will be like banning all members who are under 18. How would you like to be banned yourself for such a ridiculous idea.

And FYI, during the recent porn post, (unless they lied about their age) it was the people who were over 18 who posted them, not under so why should we ban people under 18 when we are not the ones who did it?

It pretty evident that some over 18 year old is not as smart as many under 18 year old. How stupid this idea amazes me.

Doesnt really matter if it is brung in anyway, There is absolutely NO WAY that this can be enforced and everyone will just lie about their age. I mean the music companies cant even stop people downloading music so how do you propose to stop people faking thier age!!!! hahahaha. anything can be done on the internet. "BRING IT ON"

Stop calling some of us immature. Some people under 18 are not immature. You are just being ignorant.

You can't ban people under 18..

People below 18 can like skyscrapers, architecture, and be interested in urban planning and infrastructure too.

As to immaturity.. Look, there's been a number of suggestions. I suggest that they be considered, but please, nothing so extreme as banning all under 18. It would be very difficult to enforce anyway.

This really shouldn't go any farther than some guy's idea really. 16, 18 whatever the age SSC should be free for everyone who wants to use it. Although that may exclude those who will only abuse it.
