Thanks to blackflag for organizing these pics in the canada forum.
Most people don't know how nice our waterfront is so here are some pics of it

Some people think the waterfront is a wasteland like in the 60's
mid 1960's

but it has change greatly just along witht he rest of the city

Toronto's harbourfront is going through a renewal process that will involve various projects to beautify the area. Can't wait until they're done. Anyways... if you want to see nice harbourfronts in Canada, I would recommend you look at Vancouver.

Alot of asian influence in the high rise condo dept.

I like how Toronto has built up well along the waterfront, I dunno where the Rochester Ferry ports...but it looks to be as if there is more to do at the Toronto waterfront, I have been there before and was okay with the city...it's looking bigger now and I admire the growth.

One question...and if one of the knowledgable Toronto forumers could PM this...what is Torontos industry? what is the big boom from? and what kind of markets keep the city going on an upward scale?

looking good.

*Nude beach huh? you couldn't put one of those in WNY, everyone here is a fat ass

You could say its just because Toronto is Canada's leading city in almost everything, and because of that, it's the only REAL 'big city' in the country, so everyone is moving and employed in Toronto. In the US, there are many 'big cities' throughout the country, so there is more choice if one wants to work and live a huge metro.

yep it's ontario place, builted in the 60's for canada's 100 birthday i think

Toronto's growth is fulled by it's very divisified econmy which prevents it from having a downturn. Aswell it's high levels of immigration keeps demands high in the service industry and especially for homes and condos and as a result the construction industry is very Strong. The city also has 3 major universities and many colleges which give the city a very educated workforce that feeds the knowledge industry very well.

A major factor that's driving the current residential high-rise boom is an inflated real-estate market. I guess that sounds obvious, but the fact is that most single-dwelling and townhouse units are far beyond the reach of the average person, and so alot of people are buying condo's instead.

To put it in perspective: I bought a 1600 sq/ft house in Hamilton for 150k. In Toronto, 150k would buy a 500 sq/ft condo. A house might start at around 350-400k, but it's likely a piece of shit or in a not-so-nice area (I've seen post-war brick boxes get listed for a million.... it's insane. Check out www.mls.ca for listings). I refused to live in a condo, so I moved to Hamilton, if you're wondering.

As for what's driving Toronto's workforce, I'm not entirely sure. Toronto is strong in manufacturing, medical research, high-tech industries, and is the 4th largest financial centre in NA. Toronto also has a large creative scene, with television production, design, architecture (my field), and is only second to NYC and London for theatre production. Also, as someone mentioned, being the largest city in Canada attracts alot of regional headquarters. I think its a case of the sum is greater than it's parts.

No other city in Canada matters. All hail Toronto!!!

Some people really know how to perpetuate the arrogant Torontonian stereotype.

Anyways those pictures of the waterfront are tight.
when is that huge piece of waterfront that the feds were going to redevolop going to get started. Is that project still on the books or has it been derailed?

the waterfront is continually being developed and has been for the last couple of decades. There are currently a number of projects going on and more that will begin in the summer.

Toronto Islands.

As far as the Central Waterfront goes, there is about $500 million in construction slated for 2006 (not including the many condo projects of course)...HTO is u/c... the West Don Lands and East Bayfront are all approved and ready to start construction in 2006...one phase of the new promenade is finished, with phase 2 starting in 2006...the Princes' Gates are getting a major reno...the new Watercourse is u/c (isn't it supposed to host the Dragon Boat World Cup or something? )....and the new Film Port project has been given the green light.

Personally, I love the reno job on Tip Top...it's well...a Tip Top job they did, although it's just a private condo development.

As for the bulk of the Portlands (east side of the inner harbour), it will be a long term project...I see the parkland parts developed first...and the improvements to Cherry Beach weren't massive, but was nice. There are too many owners involved there...feds, province, the city, and a lot of private. The biggest favour the feds could do, is pull the plug on the Harbour Commision...they are just a fuking albatros around the city's neck.
