A new park with an old-world charm
By CHOW HOW BAN

http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2005/3/m_02sentul1.jpg
http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2005/3/m_02sentul2.jpg
Park at Sentul West is fast shaping up on a 14ha land and is poised to become one of Kuala Lumpur's premier landmarks when it is ready middle of the year.

The RM35mil park, developed by YTL Land and Development Bhd at where the Sentul Raya golf course was, will not only benefit house buyers in its vicinity, but other city folks, too.

Cherry trees line the walkways in the park.
Gone are the golf course's lawns and in their place are cemented walkways that are framed by trees, slopes and gleaming ponds.

Together with the Red Flames, Golden Showers, Raintrees, Frangipanis, Cinnamons and Fucus that have been on the land for years are new cherry trees and species such as the Sentol, Pelawan, Merawan Siput, Tualang, Kelat Nasis, Tembusus, and Gleams.

?Ficus trees that are growing on a brick wall that was part of the Sentul railway workshop remain where they are,'' said principal architect Ng Sek San. The 100-year-old wall will serve as a façade of the new Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre at the park's Festival Plaza.

When completed, the RM25mil centre will become the new home of The Actors Studio that lost its base at Dataran Merdeka to floods a couple of years ago.

Built on a 6,300sq metre site, the centre is a collaboration between YTL, the studio and Yayasan Budi Penyayang and its aim is to, not only offer classical, contemporary and innovative acts, but also interest the public to the performing arts.

Blending with the rustic features of the old railway workshop is a new-age four-storey glass and steel structure. The facilities in it will include a 500-seater proscenium theatre with top-of-the-line acoustics and a 200-seater experimental theatre with movable seating, ideal for smaller productions.

Also in the works at the structure are pre-function foyers, a performing arts academy, a resource centre, a bookshop, a bistro and a workshop where props are made.

Ng said what is unique about the centre was that visitors could view the entire park through its steel and glass atrium at the holding foyer.

?The interfacing is crucial,'' he said. ?We don?t see very many differences between the park and the centre's architecture. All of them complement each other as a whole.

?We like the idea of bricked buildings on green lawns where performances can be held in the open.''

Among the other features at the park are seven red-bricked walls that have been built on a straight line as if to draw visitors' attention to the arts centre. The centre itself is situated on the park's fringe.

Ng said the old railway workshop's glory had been retained on purpose.

The Sentul Raya golf course is slowly making way for the new park.
?When we began conceptualising the park, we wanted it to be all about lines and train stations,'' he said, adding that should one takes a hot-air balloon trip over the park, he or she could see from above people moving along the parks corridors to converge at ?destinations'' that interest them. ?Just like on a railway track.''

Plans are afoot to build a hot-air balloon centre besides a pet hotel for condominium buyers. Along with these will be movie lawns and areas for picnics, weddings and other celebrations.

He said by July, besides the Festival Plaza, the South Gardens, East Fields, West Fields and Central Lake - where a camping site and a bird viewing island are located- would be ready.

?The park is half completed,'' said Ng. ?The second phase will include themed and water gardens.''

An interesting feature will be the Koi Centre, a hub where the fishes will be bred and sold. It will also serve as an educational centre for enthusiasts and students.

Ng said the general idea was to bring to indoor activities to the outdoors. ?We may even put sofas in the open.''

Tropical Spice Garden, Batu Ferringhi

http://i1.trekearth.com/photos/2782/steps.jpg

by YahWen Ho

This is the 2nd picture of my Penang Tropical Spice Garden series.

The steps are actually tiles which are rested on solid rocks. The water surrounding them are from the adjacent waterfall from pic #1.

You can see a lady wearing a hat at the far end of the background. At that time when I was there together with fellow TE member ViperVX, there were less than 20 people in the garden.

Some facts about this place:
============================
The entrance costs 13 Malaysian Bucks (slightly less than USD 3.50). It is owned by a local Penang lady who is married to a foreigner if my memory serves me right.

I like this picture and I hope you like it too.

Cheers!

Measures taken

THE Penang Municipal Council has taken safety measures at the Penang Municipal Park (formerly Youth Park) following recent cases of rocks rolling down the hills there.

The council said in a statement yesterday that a visual check of the rock structure by its engineering department found that the situation was safe.

It said the council would hoard up the area and remove big rocks which were unstable.

Plans were underway to turn the area along the cliff edges into a rock-climbing site, it said.

Penang council to spend RM5m on park
By SYLVIA LOOI

THE Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) will soon embark on the second phase of its beautification and development project at the Relau Metropolitan Park.

Council recreation services deputy director Mohamed Akbar Mustapha said the project, costing about RM5mil, was planned under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.

“Among the projects are jungle trails, a man-made lake, play pool and gazebos,” he said in an interview.

The RM29mil Metropolitan Park, opened to the public last year, is the island's second largest recreational park after the Penang Municipal Park.

The 52ha park currently has facilities for jungle trekking, mountain biking, hiking and outdoor games.

Mohamed Akbar said that the council’s immediate plan was to fence up the park and increase the number of parking lots.

“As the park is getting popular, the present 25 lots are not enough,’’ he said.

He added that a survey had been conducted to identify a suitable location for the new parking area.

“As council president Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib wants to promote the park for agro-tourism, the additional parking lots will most probably be drawn up in the centre of the park so that drivers can cruise past all the fruit trees in the park,” he explained.

On fencing up the park, Mohamed Akbar said a tender would be called soon.

“We hope to complete the project by year-end,” he said, adding that a sum of RM800,000 had been allocated for the new parking lots and fencing project.

Walkway to be ready soon

A WALKWAY linking the Pe-nang Municipal Park to the nearby Penang Botanic Gardens is expected to be opened by end of the month.

Bukit Bendera MP Chia Kwang Chye said the walkway, measuring about 1.8km, would be opened in conjunction with the International Floral Fair on May 29.

“Bush clearing is presently being carried out to make way for the RM100,000 project,” he said.

The project included the construction of a garden near the Moongate arch for the public to rest, he said.

“With the walkway, it will be convenient for the public to take a walk to both places, instead of using the main road,'' he told a press conference after launching a beautification campaign for Hong Seng Estate at the park recently.

Chia, who is also the Deputy Internal Security Minister, said that Kebun Bunga state assemblyman Quah Kooi Heong and his service centre were working with resident associations to adopt open spaces and beautify them.

“I will also like to urge other MPs and state assemblymen to adopt open spaces and beautify them,'' he said.

On the beautification campaign, Chia said other housing estates in his constituency would also be chosen for beautification purposes.

“We also have plans to have beautiful landscapes for Pepper Estate, Padang Tembak and Water-fall area,'' he said.

He said a beautification competition would be organised for the best landscape design for the Hong Seng Estate.

The first three winners will receive RM500, RM300 and RM200 respectively.

Closing date is May 24. Entry forms are available at Quah's service centre at Block E-3, Rumah Pangsa Padang Tembak and at the park's office.

For details, call Charles at 019-4118218, Sara at 016-4567410 or Endang at 013-4267186.

Night draw for botanic gardens

There are plans to extend the opening hours of the Penang Botanic Gardens to 10pm, curator Lim Boon Tiong said.

Lim said the gardens were now opened from 5am to 8pm, adding that the opening hours would be extended to 9pm from May 29 to June 5 on a trial basis in conjunction with the Penang International Floral Festival 2005.

He said there were also plans to light up the trees in the gardens with colourful bulbs when the place was open at night.

Lim said the implementation of the extended opening hours and tree lighting depended on when the state government could allocate funds for the purpose.

“We hope to attract more tourists to the gardens by having attractive lightings.

“For a start, trees at the formal garden and at the main entrance might be lit up,” he told reporters yesterday after Kebun Bunga assemblyman Quah Kooi Heong opened a drawing competition themed “Flora and Fauna” at the gardens.

The competition was held in conjunction with the festival.

Lim said it was worthwhile to fix the lightings as the effects would make the place beautiful, and thus attract visitors to the gardens at night.

Quah said he hoped to get help from organisations to promote the formal garden as a research centre, especially secondary students.

He also urged schools to send their bands and cultural troupes to perform at the main stage on weekends on a voluntary basis.

“This will provide entertainment for visitors. The gardens need to be made livelier with activities taking place there frequently,” he added.

Floral festival at botanic gardens
By DERRICK VINESH

THE Penang Botanic Gardens will be turned into a floral wonderland from May 29 to June 5.

The Penang International Floral Festival 2005 will be held there and thousands of colourful blooms will be on display.

More than 20 flower species from Holland, China, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia will complement the garden’s existing 30-odd types of flowers.

Themed ‘Penang in Bloom’, the festival will feature an orchid competition, a floral art demonstration and a garden expo.

State Tourism and Environment Committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow said more than 150,000 peo- ple were expected to visit the gardens.

http://penang.thestar.com.my/content/news/2005/5/18/flora.jpg
Teng(left)and Penang Botanic Gardens curator Lim Boon Tiong looking at some flowers.

“This year, we will introduce a floral lantern competition and exhibition.

“We will also conduct children’s activities under a Nature Education Outreach programme,” he said re-cently.

The floral lantern competition, he said, was divided into two catego- ries – one for secondary school students (RM1,000 for the winner) and another for the public (RM2,000 for the winner).

He said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Abdul Rashid Abdullah’s wife Datin Rabaayah Md Naim will open the event at 9.30am on May 29.

There will be a children’s colouring contest, themed ‘Flora and Fauna’, at the gardens at 9am on May 21 and a batik flora fashion show at Prangin Mall from 11am to 10pm on June 2 and 5.

The Penang Malay Artists Associa-tion will hold a flora art exhibition at the State National Arts Gallery in Dewan Sri Pinang from 9am to 4.30pm throughout June.

For details and registration for the competitions, contact the festival’s secretariat at 04-2270428/ 2279915, fax: 04-2286075 or e-mail: jkbunga@penang.gov.my.

KUALA LUMPUR: Three new large parks will grace the city's landscape to provide more healthy space for families to spend quality time together.

Federal Territories secretary-general Datuk Dr Zulkarnain Awang said two of the “metropolitan parks” would be in Kepong and Cheras.

Tenders are out to build the other park in Pudu.

“In a big city like Kuala Lumpur, families need to have space where they can spend quality time together,” he said when opening a family day event organised by the Federal Territory Taxi Drivers Welfare Organisation at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa here yesterday.

RM3m project to expand park
By SYLVIA LOOI
Monday August 1, 2005

MORE facilities will be added to the Penang Municipal Park (formerly Youth Park) in a RM3mil project to develop 32.4ha of the 67.6ha park under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.

Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) community services director Mohamad Ismail Ibrahim said the new facilities would include an administration block, an archery range, a hostel, a circuit for remote control cars and a mountain bike track.

He said there would also be a recreational area for jungle trekking, jogging track, an obstacle course for team building, two multi-purpose fields, a viewing gallery and a petanque (game in which steel bowls are rolled or hurled at a wooden marker ball) field.

Mohamad Ismail said only 16.6ha of the park had been developed so far.
With the new development, 49ha of the park's land area would be used, leaving 18.6ha which will be maintained as a green lung, he said.

He said some of the new facilities, such as the archery range, petanque field and remote control car circuit, would conform to international standards.

“The council plans to hold international competitions at the park,” Mohamad Ismail said in a recent interview.

He also said another 870 parking lots would be created under the project, while the park's present basketball court would be upgraded.

“Our priority is to improve children's attractions at the park,” he added.

Among the present facilities at the park are a play pool for children and a skating rink.

Walkway to link park and gardens
Monday August 1, 2005

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2005/8/1/central/m_16walkway.jpg

A council worker cleaning the walkway.

COME year-end, visitors to the Penang Municipal Park will be able to take a stroll to the nearby Penang Botanic Gardens and vice-versa with the completion of the 1.8km walkway linking the two places.

Penang Municipal Council community services director Mohamad Ismail Ibrahim said construction of the walkway started last month.

“So far, we have completed about 400m of the walkway,” he said.

He said the RM100,000 project would include the construction of a garden near the Moon Gate arch as a rest stop as the spot was about midway between the gardens and the park.

With the walkway, visitors can choose to park their vehicles at either the park or the gardens to go to either place.

Mohamad Ismail said the walkway was the brainchild of Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, who wanted a linkage between the two places.

He said non-governmental organisations were roped in to help clear the bushes for the construction of the walkway, which was scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

Scenic venue: A photo showing Taman Kuari in Penang, the venue for the
World Musical Festival to be held from July 20 to 22. The road to the venue
will be fully decorated by the end of next week.

PENANG: At least 15,000 people will gather at the World Musical Festival in Taman Kuari from July 20 to 22.

Steps would be taken to ensure smooth traffic flow on the road leading to the venue, state tourism chief Teng Chang Yeow said after inspecting the site yesterday.

“The road to Taman Kuari will be fully decorated by the end of next week. This festival is one of the main events held in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2007,” he said.

The festival will feature 13 international bands from the Solomon Islands, the United States, Afghanistan, Italy, South Africa, Russia, Peru, Britain, Burkina Faso and other countries.

Teng said a series of promotional activities had been held in Koh Samui and Phuket to draw foreign tourists.

Jointly organised by the Tourism Ministry, Tourism Malaysia and the Penang Tourism Action Council (PTAC), it will showcase cultural, community and folk-inspired music with strong ethnic edge and identity.

Tickets are priced at RM40 for adults and RM10 for children. For details, contact the Penang Tourism Action Council at 04-262 0202 or visit www.tourismpenang.gov.my.

Three-year upgrading project for Lake Gardens
By BAVANI M Tuesday April 27, 2010

THE upgrading of Taman Tasik Perdana (Lake Gardens) will not only see it being transformed into a botanical garden with plenty of flowering plants but will involve old and rare trees being labelled for better identification, said Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuad Ismail.

Fuad said this would enable visitors to the park to know more about the plant species in the country and take photographs. The mayor also said all the trees would be retained and maintained during the upgrading work.

“We will also plant more colourful plants as well as fruit trees – not the fruits that can be eaten but the ones that look nice,’’ he added.

Fuad revealed that there are plans to include a garden for the blind and that several private companies had agreed to donate RM1mil to upgrade Kuala Lumpur’s oldest park.

The upgrading project will take about three years to complete and will be divided into three phases: short-term, intermediate and long-term with phase one taking about six months to complete.

LIGITAN TO BE GAZETTED SEPARATELY AS PROTECTED PARK
SEMPORNA, Malaysia May 2 (NNN-Bernama) -- Ligitan Island, off here, will be gazetted as a protected park in a separate process as it involves a vast area and located far from Sipadan, the world-renowned diving spot which was gazetted as a protected park last year.

Sabah Parks director Paul Basintal said the process would provide for a better management of the island upon its gazettement.

He said Ligitan Island, about an hour of boat ride from Sipadan Island, had its own unique features including a massive stretch of coral reef measuring 20km in length.

"Due to these features there is a need to gazette the island separately. We are ready to manage the island," he told reporters here following a fact-finding mission to the island on Thursday.

Also in the group were researchers from Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Fisheries Department and Mineral and Geoscience Department.

The mission was a side programme in conjunction with the five-day Sipadan Island Park scientific expedition which ended on Friday.

Initial finding revealed damages to the coral reef due to destructive fishing methods such as the use of explosives.

Paul said the areas to be gazetted as protected park would be determined based on ecological boundaries, namely the outer edge of the coral reef field.

He added that the management plan for Ligitan would be different from that of the Sipadan Island Park as it would be based on an integrated marine management owing to Ligitan Island's location in the Coral Triangle.

Coral Triangle, dubbed the "Amazon of the Ocean", is a vast tropical marine waters of Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste.

Paul said Sabah Parks would submit a report to the Joint Committee chaired by the National Security Division, underlining the initial process to gazette the island and surrounding waters.

It would also cover awareness campaign among members of the sea-faring community in the area, he said.

This would be followed by employing measures to safeguard the area, he added.

According to him, at the moment Ligitan Island is not protected by any ordinance or enactment either under the state or federal legislation.http://www.namnewsnetwork.org/v2/read.php?id=118925

Lake Gardens now filled with trees, plants and waterfalls

Q. Do you think that parks are important to a city?

A. Apart from being an important tourism tool, parks offer a respite to the ever growing urban population of Kuala Lumpur. Due to the lack of space, people are living in condos and high-rise buildings. They have no space to breathe so they look to DBKL, to provide them with a place where they can hang out, interact and relax. But unlike the past where people come to parks to jog or go for walks, I want KL-ites to relate to nature. I want them to enjoy their surroundings and learn about the environment, the plants and more importantly become nature lovers. As for the tourists, we need to sell our parks to them as they want to see something new. When the mayor of Curitiba in Brazil visited recently, I took his entourage to the Lake Gardens and they were impressed. So I know that our parks have potential to be one of the best.

Q. How do you plan to get the community to accept Lake Gardens?

Battle For Subang Ria Park Rages On
Posted by Thinkproperty.my News Team in The Star

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2010/12/28/central/subang2.jpg
An aerial view of the current state of Subang Ria Park

HE battle for Subang Ria Park rages on, as a group of residents valiantly fight to defend and protect what they bill as the last urban park in Subang Jaya.

Subang Jaya residents were surprised to learn that 7.7ha of the park had been approved for commercial development under the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) Local Plan.

The discovery was made during a hearing on the park issue at the state Appeals Board last month.

Although the map earmarked the 29.39ha park as a green lung, a supplementary table specified that 7.7ha of the “private recreational park” could be used for commercial activities.

Patchay's Saturday Run @ Kuala Lumpur Lake & Botanical Gardens

Lake Gardens is Kuala Lumpur's first large-scale recreational park. Measuring 91.6 hectares, it is located in the heart of the city and established in 1888. Lake Gardens served as place of refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city during colonial times. It contains large sculpted and manicured gardens and a host of attractions.
