Construction starts for "Skrapan" in Skövde

On March 3 the construction of the 18-storey building Skrapan (which means the Scraper) in Skövde in western Sweden started. The building will be 50 m tall (twice the height of Skövde's tallest today) and completed in summer 2006. The building will have 113 apartments for students, most of them with one room in the size of 32-34 square meters. Architect is Contekton Arkitekter Fyrstad AB (http://www.contekton.com/index.html), and owner is the local Skövdebostäder. (http://www.skovdebostader.se/)

Very interesting project. As I said in another thread, I think it's great that at least some cities in Sweden have understood the big demand on student residential. The building looks very good on the renderings (to be cheap living for students?). Do you know how much the rental will be?

Looks MUCH nicer :) than the ugly dorm towers we have here! Of course those things are older. ;) Is Skövde a university town, or is it close to a University?

@crovax: The rental will be 3900 SEK/month (~450 Euro/month), so it won't be very cheap for students to live there, some people have complained about the high rental.

@WH: Skövde haven't got any university, but they've got a "högskola" (not that kind of highschools you have in the US, it's more like a smaller university :)), with about 7800 students.

The Scraper is looking good, but the construction industry needs to stop inflating the costs so much - 3900SEK for a student might work in Skövde, but there's student housing in Sthlm in that range (and above!) which combined with the high cost of living means quite a few students should be loosing money every month.

I will actually move there in fall and hopefully it'll be worth the pretty high rental. Talked to Skövdebostäder today and confirmed that I wanted the apartment. It's on the 14th floor so I'm hoping for quite the view ;)
