It has the possibility for a HK landscape. We need to remove the decaying buildings, and build more Skyscrapers near the sea, though.

Air pollution is a problem, as is seawater pollution.

Other than that, there is a rise in crime lately ( but still, levels are low), and the roads are in a terrible shape.

But the nightlife is great, and the job situation is ok... so I guess it balances out just fine.

I love Haifa, but driving and parking in this city is even worse than Tel-Aviv .
and although it's by the sea the beach is too far away (Haifa has amazing white sand beaches BTW) .

what a contradiction! What a beuatiful place, what a sad memory for Turks! BTW Haifa Orange is very famous...

I thinks you're confusing it with Jaffa , that's where the famous oranges are from .

It's interesting to note that within the next 10-20 years all of the existing commercial, non-passenger ship port activity will eventually be moved to vast new areas that are to be reclaimed from the sea on the Eastern side of the bay. This will cost several $billion. The existing "downtown" port will only dock cruise and pleasure ships and will basically be converted into a large shopping and entertainment seafront district and will be integrated into the rest of the urban fabric of the city thus giving citizens unencumbered access to the waterfront areas that are a no-go zone today since they are enclosed within a commercial port that's obviously closed to non-port-related activities. The later stages also include not only larger overall port facilities but also a significant lengthening of the Haifa airport runway. Eventually, even the famous "Dagon" grain storage building, easily identifiable in all the pictures posted here that show the port will be demolished and brand new replacement silos will be built in the new port.

Here's a map of the Haifa port relocation and expansion aka "HaKarmel Port" plan. http://www.israports.org.il/sea_of_ranar/sea_of_ranar/english/Hacarmel_port/images/plan.html

I liked Akko when I was there, cheap shopping good food and sweet baklava :eat: But many historic buildings are in a bad way, shops closed, no bussiness. I didn't know about the criminals, I was lucky I guess

By the way, I used to see a something like a big power plant when I was driving in and out of Haifa near the sea. Is that operational or waiting to be demolitioned? They should turn that to a disco :nocrook:

Zohar, for your interest, between WWI and WWII Bosnia-Herzegovina was ruled by a monarchy that did not regard Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims) as a nation. Consequently - tens of thousands of Bosniaks went to what is now Israel, mainly to Haifa. If you look a Haifa phone book printed with latin script, you will still see many names ending in IC.

Haifa is the only city in Israel where, according to polls, a majority of both Jews, Arabs, and others want, and feel that they do, live together peacefully. Other cities have the "want", or the "do", but never both. :)

Haifa is very special to me, for my own heritage, and I think it is very special for Israel as a place that, for the most part, has not allowed itself to be...abducted. :)

Haifa metro consist of Akko Karmiel Tivon and Yokneam as well , the Krayot forge the inner circle of that metro, while Haifa(+Kiryat Chaim) is the inner core.

the worst bit is it was planned as one of 5 similar buildings - 3 parallel to the sea and 2 standing 90 degrees to it. The plan ws photographed and presented from above so the buildings looked small and innocent.

Currently this building isthe only one built, alongside a second
tower - Meridien Hotel which was redesigned to be slim and take up less
sea views. The third tower has been luckily halted, hopefully no one will build
these horizontal monsters and to think instead we could have had a slim
36 storey ower instaed of these two 18 storey elephants.

source26
July 7th, 2005, 09:01 PM
uRban dont listen to anyone saying Haifa is boring theres tons of things to do here,
the best of which is to lie down on the sand beaches!
But there are treks in the carmel, Elija's cave, 7(!) Malls, A panorama trail by car,
5 Museums, Druze villages, the Bahai Gardens, you can tour Acco and the Galilee from Haifa.. and for sports mainly kitesurfing, sailing, swimming, tennis.
Also music festivals, movie festival, arab culture and art trails in wadis,
some lookouts and observatory at the university, park carmel nature reserve and prehistoric caves.
Nightlife is not tel aviv, but its ok.

The problem is most residents of haifa dont know what their city has to offer!
I have trekked in most of the wadis between neighbourhoods (You can see just one of them in the last picture I put here) some have bizantine ruins, unique caves, water springs - Its like stepping into the wilderness with the city just minutes away at all times. Ive trekked in other parts of the world and I can say this is one of the little known great things
to do in Haifa - the wadis are amazing and some have been almost untouched
by man.

uRban dont listen to anyone saying Haifa is boring theres tons of things to do here,
the best of which is to lie down on the sand beaches!

Ive trekked in other parts of the world and I can say this is one of the little known great things
to do in Haifa - the wadis are amazing and some have been almost untouched
by man.
I too am aware that Haifa is very diverse. One time I remember walking down the mountain and into downtown, and I passed by an Ethopian neighborhood. Haifa is home to a number of malls, and the Congress Ctr hosts numerous plays that many come to see. Colleges such as Technion and Haifa University are famous to both Israel and sometimes the world. Also, Haifa is Israel's main port as well as its main financial city (it's actually not Tel Aviv as many believe it to be).

Basically they market anything you want from pots to paintings to
silly blankets and straw furniture, with an oriental (often fake) flavour.
Notice the car.. poverty, huh?

If you think about that area, the Germans were the first modern Europeans to settle in Haifa, not the British. It is very typical of German houses to have red roofs, b/c the ones in German villages are like that to as well as the houses the Forest Hills Gardens section of Queens in NYC. One thing that bugs me about Europeans in Haifa is where Paris Sq came from. Where the French ever in Haifa at one point, b/c I only know the British and Germans as the first colonial powers in there. Perhaps that area was part of a French settlement, and was annexed by the British.

AFAIK, Paris square was named this way in honour of our friendship with France in the 50s and 60s. ( a relationship that sadly went very sour later on )

Unfortunately the article is in german but I will try to traslate:

http://www.rp-online.de/public/article/dtoday/news/aktuell/97617

The german-Israeli relationships are 40 years old and there is a city relationship between Haifa and Düsseldorf since 30 years. Because of this reason Yona Yahav, the major of the israeli sistercity, was invited by Düsseldorf's major Joachim Erwin. He will stay for 4 day (9th to 12th July). He will officially open the "Haifastreet" on the 12th of July.

Biotechnology, tourism, culture and environment are the main topics of this visit.
Erwin welcomed Yahav in the cityhall and Yahav invited Erwin to come to Haifa. Erwin said we will expand our Relationship...

Yahav talked on Monday with some Experts and showed that the location Haifa is a Biotechnologycentre....

I'm sure there will be some photos of the opening tomorrow

320,000..

with the area i think its like 600,000

source26
October 28th, 2005, 08:15 AM
yotvata is now I think fully (or most) owned by strauss-elite foods,
I dont know if the restaurants as well, I think they are owned by kibbutz Yotvata.

haifa population is 270,000
the metro population is about 550,000, depending on what smaller satelite cities you include.

Azazel
October 28th, 2005, 11:05 AM
It's actually the other way, IIRC. - the restraunts are owned by Strauss-Elite, and the milk farm is owned by the Kibbutz.

Yesterday i went on a big hike on the Carmel mountain range, from the city of haifa all the way across the streams and peaks to the other side near Atlit.
It was one of the most beautiful days i've ever walked in, just a day after heavy rains, unlimited visibility and beautiful skies.

you can find all the pics in my Pbase gallery here (http://www.pbase.com/beivushtang/carmel_ii) , some additional urban pics will be only posted here through imageshack, and many nature pics are only there, if you're intrerested.

^^ believe me I do treks in the wadis, sometimes they take a full day to walk in, and its like walking in a forest, you almost dont see the houses above and you dont hear anything, and then you are 5 minutes from home at any time, so its great.. there are secret places of archaelogy, caves, streams, wildlife, hideouts.. and best of all not that many people actually walk in them..
