Yes, that's built by the river. I think the esplanade is going to be extended for a few more meters and properly landscaped. The new extension is just beside the current Kingwood hotel and there is possibly 3-4 floors of shopping area in the podium block which is 6 storeys tall.

Sibu may expect a new round of competition to build high rises among the tycoons as this hotel is slightly taller than the newly opened RH Hotel (4 star). Don't know whether RH group will soon build their proposed office tower which is supposed to be slightly taller than this new Kingwood Hotel too. And, there is another 5 star hotel previously proposed to be built beside the Town Square Phase 2, which is rumoured to be linked to the Chief Minister companies and that one is also taller than this Kingwood Hotel.

I guess this project may stimulate the SMC to carry out the "Pearl of Rejang" project sooner (which is the expansion of the current explanade) as the landscaping in front of the hotel will have to match the explanade.

Sibu To Have The Country's Longest Bridge By October, 2009

SIBU, March 15 (Bernama)--Sibu will have the country's longest bridge across a river by October, 2009.

The bridge tentatively known as the Batang Leba'an bridge, will be located at Batang Leba'an in Bawang Assan, about 30 minutes drive from here along the Sibu-bawang Assan Road.

Upon completion, the 1,240-metre long bridge will link the town to the Tanjung Manis new township near Sarikei, which is the fastest growing and major industrial area, especially in downstream timber processing and shipbuilding. Sarikei is also principally involved in deep sea fishing.

Divisional Public Works Department Engineer Vincent Tang, in his briefing to the state secretary Datuk Wilson Baya Dandot here said it would begin construction of the bridge next month.

He said the bridge was the biggest component in the RM530 million Sibu/BawangAssan/Serdeng/Tanjung Manis Road construction project which was scheduled for completion by the same period.

He said under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, an initial sum of RM420 million had been set aside for the 42 km long road plus seven major bridges.

Tang said the Batang Leba'an bridge was under the project's first package worth RM222 million which had been awarded to Trans Resources Corporation Sdn Bhd.

He said the local company too would build the first 37.5 km long road from here to Sungai Satubah Satu.

He said it would also build two other bridges at Sungai Legan and Sungai Loba Satubah, both 260 metres long.

For the second package, Tang said Inai Kiara Sdn Bhd had been given the RM154.2 million contract to continue with the next road construction from Sungai Loba Satubah to Seredeng.

Included in this package are two bridges, the Seredeng Bridge (755 metres) and the Loba Stabar bridge (280 metres).

Tang said the third package was for the construction of two more bridges, the Belawai (480 metres) and the Sungai Loba Pulau (400 metres).

He said Syarikat Pekerjaan Piasau Konkerit Sdn Bhd had been awarded the RM67 million project.

Speaking to reporters later Wilson urged all government officers entrusted with monitoring the implementation of any government development projects to treat their tasks with full responsibility and dedication.

"You should report any insurmountable problem which can cause delays to us for discussion and solution."

"The monitoring aspect is very critical and one has to be directly involved in order to be informed."

On the whole, he was happy that the implementation process in the state had proceeded smoothly.

He said the state needed to have a thorough infrastructure development which could give spiralling effects to its development programmes and strategies.

I think the mall will be more for upmarket stuff such as jewellery, branded costume, perfume, posh restaurant etc., similar concept to Novotel, Kuching and many shopping arcades adjacent to star rated hotels in KL. Certainly it's not fo ppl like us to go there and buy things but they are catered for hotel guests and tourists. I think this area will be another happening area in Sibu in the future, at par with the Town Square and the Gateway area.

I wonder when they will start constructing it? Whereas for the upcomimg 5 star hotel at the middle of Sibu town square phase 2, Hilton Group is rumoured to be the one..

沙廉濾水站次期擴建
耗資逾5千萬19日動土

updated:2007-03-17 06:46:36 MYT

Sibu's Kingwood hotel to go 5-star

Sibu: Kingwood hotel here is to be transformed into a five-star landmark hotel, rising another six storeys and encompassing additional facilities as well as shopping and commercial lots.

The expansion will mean an additional 224 rooms of various categories plus 10 apartment suites from the present 168 rooms, according to a spokesperson of Sibu-based Kingwood Group, a leading local timber, oil palm, padi and property conglomerate.

At 18 storeys, the new building will make Kingwood the biggest and tallest hotel here.

Sarawak's Urban Development and Tourism Minister, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, will officiate at the earth-breaking ceremony for the expansion project on Wednesday.

The expansion work is scheduled to be completed in three years. The project will take up 0.445 ha of the 0.708 ha in front of the hotel, plus another 0.121 ha that extends to the Rejang River.

The spokesperson said the additional facilities will include commercial areas on the ground, first, third and fourth floors and two banquet halls which can accommodate 800 and 1,000 people.

There will also be 447 sq m of conference venues, 230 standard guestrooms, three executive suites, one presidential suite and 10 one- and two-bedroom apartment suites, she added.

The renovated hotel will feature 300 indoor car park lots in the compound as well as at a four-storey car park.

The spokesperson said the new five-star hotel will have eight passenger and service lifts together with 12 escalators up to the sixth floor. She declined to reveal the cost of the upgrading.

Meanwhile, Group chairman Datuk Hii Yu Peng said in a statement the upgraded hotel will help meet the town's aspirations of having better accommodation and commercial facilities, especially in meeting the needs of the tourism sector.

The Kingwood Group has two other hotels, in Kuching and Miri as well as a 99-room beach resort in Mukah.

SIBU: The town will be seeing another landmark structure coming up - the extension of Kingwood Hotel to include a six-storey podium and 18-storey tower.

For Kingwood, the project is anticipated to earn it a five-star rating.

Chairman of Kingwood Group Datuk Hii Yu Peng said the project’s earth-breaking ceremony would be held tomorrow (March 14) at 9.30 am.

Expected to officiate at the earth-breaking ceremony is Second Finance Minister and Minister of Urban Development and Tourism Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.

Hii said the project, when completed in three years’ time, would undoubtedly bring the hotel and tourism industry to a greater height.

“This project is in line with the strategy and measures of the Sibu Development Vision Team to help Sibu grow,” he said.

The expansion project will take up 0.445 ha of the 0.708 ha in front of the hotel, plus another 0.121 ha that extends to the Rejang River.

Additional facilities will include commercial areas on the ground, first, third and fourth floors, 447 sq m of conference venues, 230 standard guestrooms, three executive suites, one presidential suite and 10 one- and two-bedroom apartment suites.

The banquet hall on the fifth floor will be able to comfortably accommodate 180 tables, making it the largest banquet hall in town.

Also featured in the extension project are ground parking and four-storey car park structure that can accommodate 300 cars, 78 motorcycles and five buses at any one time.

There will be six passenger lifts, two service lifts and 12 escalators.

With 244 rooms to be added, Kingwood Hotel, which now has 168 rooms, shall become the hotel with the largest number of rooms in Sibu in time to come.

Minister of Urban Development and Tourism, Datuk Sri Wong Soon Koh, said the RM20 million academy would take in its first batch of students in 2008.

He said the state government had contributed RM5 million to its construction on a three-hectare site in Upper Lanang Road here, while a local timber and construction corporation, the Shin Yang Group, was paying for the balance.

"Initially, we hope to train cadet officers and maritime engineers who are in great demand in the region and even worldwide," he added when launching the three-day Sibu Ship Expo 2007 which is promoting the state's shipbuilders and products as well as related products used in the industry.

"We are working closely with the International Maritime Organisation, Marine Department and the Ministry of Higher Education for worldwide recognition and accreditation for the academy's qualifications."

Sibu Jaya To Become Modern Self-contained Recreational Township
April 23, 2007 16:59 PM

SIBU, April 23 (Bernama) -- The Sibu Rural District Council hopes to develop Sibu Jaya into a modern self-contained recreational township by 2020.

Its secretary, Abdul Razak Awang Bini, said the State Planning Authority gave its approval for the new Re-Planning Masterplan at the end of last year.

The township is being jointly developed by the state Housing Development Commission and AMCorp.

Located at Km28 Sibu-Durin Road, Sibu Jaya is the largest housing estate in the state with about 6,000 units of different types of houses and flats catering to the lower and middle income groups plus 165 shoplots and 179 industrial lots.

In his briefing for State Secretary Datuk Wilson Baya Dandot, who visited the council today, Abdul Razak said that by 2010 its population was expected to increase to over 40,000 from the current 15,000.

Sibu Aims To Attain Riveria City Status By 2020 - Robert Lau
July 07, 2007 15:07 PM

SIBU, July 7 (Bernama) -- Sibu aims to achieve "Riveria City" status by 2020 by capitalising on its best-kept secret -- the 760km-long Rajang River -- as the gateway to Sarawak's central region.

Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Robert Lau said the state leaders and Sibu Barisan Nasional (BN) Visionary Development team headed by State Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh should seriously look into Sibu's huge tourism potential.

He said Sibu, the third biggest town in Sarawak after Kuching and Miri, could no longer sustain its economic growth from the timber industry which had slowed down.

"Many foreign visitors had told me that the mighty Rajang River, being Malaysia's longest and busiest river highway, is comparable to the Yangtze River in China and the Amazon River in Brazil," he said when launching the Borneo Cultural Festival at the Sibu Town Square here last night.

Lau, who is also Sibu Member of Parliament, said he believed the Rajang River could become a significant tourist draw, especially to Sarawak's central region, because it runs through scenic flora and exotic fauna of the tropical rainforest dotted by clusters of longhouses and native villages.

As such, he said, the relevant authorities should put their heads together to come up with new products to be featured in the annual Borneo Cultural festival hosted by the Sibu Municipal Council for the sixth consecutive year.

This would woo more people to visit, invest and live in Sibu, he said.

With the Riveria City concept coming on stream, Lau expects the town's current population of 230,000 to swell to about 400,000 by 2020.

Often referred as "Foochow Town", Sibu's wealth and fame largely stems from the enterprising and hardworking Foochow community who arrived in Sarawak from southern China during the reign of Rajah Charles Brooke from 1900 to 1917.

With a fair mix of Chinese, Malays, Ibans, Melanaus and other ethnic races, Lau, himself a Foochow, described the people of Sibu as "hardworking, sincere and friendly".

He hoped foreigners considering to participate in the "Malaysia My Second Home" programme would opt to settle down in Sibu as part of efforts to boost the local economy.

In the heydays of the timber industry between 1970s and 1990s, it generated wealth worth billions of ringgit to over 200 corporate leaders in Sibu, but now the town needs to diversify its economy, including realising its huge tourism potentials, he added.

Taib: Recorda to usher in golden era for Sibu
Saturday October 20, 2007

SIBU: Sibu, Sarawak’s third largest town after Kuching and Miri, will enjoy a golden era of growth and prosperity when the Regional Corridor of Development (Recorda) in the state’s central region is implemented within the current and future Malaysia plans.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said this was due to Sibu’s strategic location within Recorda, which spans from Similajau in Bintulu to Tanjung Manis in Sarikei division.

“Sibu will play a very strong role as a services hub,” he said when speaking at an Aidilfitri gathering here recently.

He said, after the timber boom of the 70s to early 80s, the town began to lose its lustre as entrepreneurs and workers migrated in large numbers to other places in search of greener pastures.

“This is not going to happen any more. The state has reduced migration by opening more oil palm plantations.

Through Recorda, Sibu would have more job and business opportunities compared with other towns or cities in the state, Taib said.

“Sibu folk should exploit opportunities in the fields of transportation, palm oil processing and power intensive industries,” he said.

The chief minister also said that Recorda had an abundance of natural power sources like coal, palm oil and hydropower.

Its hydro energy sources alone will be able to sustain a 30-year development period, Taib added. – Bernama

Hi All, i just came back from Sibu and have a wonderful time there.
I drove to Bitangor, Sarikel, Pakan and Julau.
i also drove by my birth place, the Medan mall. This used to be my grandfather's land and there was an old wooden house where all of us used to live there.

Sibu had changed quite a bit. Of course go without saying..the kam mua mee.

Is that my motorbike? Everybody just make a guess :P

Yes fairul, that's the new extension. But since it is going to be a taller and bigger building than the old one, we can treat it as a new project in fact.

Btw, i am now back in KL. Is there any new development projects in Sibu lately? I went back and it's rather disappointing. Sibu has not had much new projects lately.

Amcorp, Sarawak to invest RM1b in Sibujaya
Published: 2008/06/17

The re-development of Sibujaya will emulate that of the Mutiara Damansara township in Kuala Lumpur, says the Sarawak Housing Minister

AMCORP and the Sarawak Housing and Development Commission (SHDC) will invest RM1 billion in the re-development of the Sibujaya township located about 26 kilometres from Sibu.

Sarawak Housing Minister Datuk Seri Abang Johari Tun Openg, in announcing this today, said the re-development would give a new and futuristic look to the township, the biggest medium- and high-end housing project in the state.

This, Abang Johari said, was based on the re-development plan which won the Judges Merit Award in Community Development (Planning Achievement) this month.

Sibujaya was also the first project in East Malaysia to have won the prestigious award by the Malaysian Institute Of Planning, he said at a press conference at the SHDC office in Sibujaya.

According to him, the re-development will emulate that of the Mutiara Damansara township in Kuala Lumpur.

Abang Johari said the re-development plan was initiated as Sibujaya, which had been launched in 1995, could not sell some of the houses built.

“The plan was conceived some time ago when Amcorp was constructing all the commercial buildings and the SHDC handling the houses. Now we have formed a joint-venture company to handle development of the 283 hectares left idle,” he said.

“We are looking into building about 6,000 units of medium- and high-end houses as well as 400 units of commercial buildings. We had previously developed an area of 161 hectares with over 4,000 units of houses and 170 commercial buildings,” he added.

Abang Johari said a major attraction of the new plan was a 16-hectare green lung to double up as a sort of botanical garden where timber species and fruit trees such as durian and dabai (Sarawak black olive) would be planted.

Another feature of the Sibujaya township project was a covered walkway built along the fringes of the green lung and linking all houses to the commercial area and schools, he said.

A RM20 million police station was also being constructed at the township.

Abang Johari said the Sibujaya township population is projected to grow from 25,000 currently to about 100,000 in 10 years’ time following the re-development effort.

Property value in the township is also expected to increase by between 30 and 50 per cent, he said. — Bernama

I found this..

An opportunity to invest in Sibu's prime commercial location!

Located in the nearby precinct of, arguably, the most densely populated part of Sarawak, Medan Mall is set to be the shoppers' paradise in the region. Medan Mall, a mega shopping complex with contemporary design, occupies some four acres within the heartland of Sibu. This double-storey shopping complex consists of a supermarket and a departmental store each with not less than 30,000 ft² among another 90 units of retail shop outlets with individual strata titles all under one roof. Besides having a total commercial floor areas of 124,500 ft², Medan Mall also has one semi-basement car park with 450 car parking lots.

Ready with individual strata title
Large supermarket (2,518 m² or 27,094 ft²) and departmental store (2,584 m² or 27,804 ft²) as anchor tenants
Affordable attractively-priced shoplots with floor areas varying from 17 m² (185 ft²) to 65 m² (704 ft²) to suit individual needs.
Ample free covered carparking bays
Existing consumer base from the residential area in the vicinity
Potential high value appreciation and rental returns.
Standard Common Facilities Provided:-
- Escalator and Lift
- Public Concourse and Passageway with homogenous tiles finish
- Air conditioning to common area
- Public washrooms
- Free parking
- Common loading / unloading bays
