View Full Version : Best Ruins of Eastern Europe: The Nominations
Sergei March 6th, 2005, 11:13 PM http://img124.exs.cx/img124/669/ruinsnominations1dr.gif
Introduction:
As the saying goes, nothing lives forever. This applies to architecture, and buildings as well. What happens to beautiful European architecture when hard times strike? Who says that ruins can't be beautiful?
In this thread, we will nominate our ruins.
Nominating Guidelines:
Make sure to include the official name of the nomination, as well as where it is located - city, and country.
All nominations require pictures to accompany them. Post pictures only, not links to websites with pictures. Post only the best pictures that represent your nomination accurately, and in the best way possible. Avoid posting large pictures or panoramas, instead include links to them.
Only two (2) nominees per country are allowed. Therefore, choose only the most distinctive, exceptional nominees. Basically, the best in the country! It's a good idea to discuss the nominations with your fellow countrymen, and posters, so that everyone comes to an agreement about what should be nominated. If more nominees are posted per country, only the first two will be considered.
Since there are only 15 spots on the poll, the first 15 valid nominations will be submitted. To avoid disappointment, post your nominations as early as possible. To make sure that your nominations are not late, you can even post the nomination without any pictures first, and edit your post later. Another suggestion is to edit your old posts, instead of creating new posts, so you can keep your original position.
The guidelines are here to make sure that everyone enjoys this installation, while keeping it fair - please follow them.
Enjoy! :)

Why not, I'm sure there are many more interesting ruins in Eastern Europe. I know for a fact that Turkey has beautiful ancient amphitheaters, and there must be another one worthy from Greece.
I also know of some ruins in Crimea, so we might just surprise you! ;)

Singidunum March 7th, 2005, 03:44 PM GOLUBAC
Golubac, probably built in the 14th century, guards the entrance to the Iron Gate gorge from high cliffs overlooking the Danube. It was held, in turn, by Prince Lazar, Despot Stefan and Despot Djuradj. The fortress has seven tall towers. Despite the many times it has been the scene of battles, Golubac is still comparatively well-preserved and represents one of the finest medieval fortresses in the country.

edolen1 March 7th, 2005, 07:05 PM Well, the ruins that are in Slovenia are far from majestic, as the bigger ruins that remain are being renovated back to their former glory.. Such is also the case with my two nominees.

Are you sure that's Odessa? There is an ancient Greek settlement in a city called Xersones, in Crimea. Maybe that's it. I will find out more about it later, and nominate it.

Please do find more info. The info I got on this is that it is from Odessa... i didn't take this pic, and never been there so I have no idea if it really is true. But as I said, the info stated that this is from Odessa.
From Encyclopædia Britannica Online:
"In ancient times a site near Odessa was occupied by a Greek colony called Odessos. In the 14th century a Tatar fortress called Khadzhibey was built on the site of the modern city. After a period of Lithuanian-Polish supremacy, the fortress passed to Turkey in 1764. The Russians gained possession in 1791 and began construction of a naval base and harbor three years later."
Nate March 8th, 2005, 07:43 AM I'm not too sure about that one near Odesa either. So I guess if we can't find any information by the time the nominations close, we can just remove that nomination...
On another note, here are the ruins of Chersonesus (also known as Cherson or Korsun). They are near the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine. The ruins are of an acient Greek city dating about 25 centuries old.

Nate March 8th, 2005, 07:54 AM Ok, Adam, I found some other info... the city was also called Odessos, Ordyssos, or Ordas when it was around a couple millenia ago. I still have to find some pictures of it though... I liked the one you had though. :)
Sergei March 8th, 2005, 03:19 PM Nice job, Nate! :colgate:
Singidunum March 8th, 2005, 03:55 PM Smederevo, situated on the right bank of the Danube, is the last medieval Serbian capital. The core of the city is the fortress, built in 1430. It has triangular plan with system of double ramparts with 25 towers and a water moat. Within the vast complex were situated the Metropolitan see and fortified ruler's court.

The City of Sarajevo is my nomination. :D Hehehe.
Nate March 11th, 2005, 05:23 AM Well, Mila, although I agree that that building you first posted is horrendous, hideous, and in complete and utter ruins... I think we are looking for something a little more historical ;)... and that wasnt very nice nominating a whole city :tongue2: although it does look pretty bad in that pic :(
Sarajka March 11th, 2005, 05:24 AM Just because it's not your history doesn't mean it's not historical. :)
Filip March 11th, 2005, 05:26 AM Just because it's not your history doesn't mean it's not historical. :)
I agree
Nate March 11th, 2005, 05:26 AM wow, that was a quick reply... you are just scouring the forums arent you :tongue2: and if you want to be technical then what you just said is historical too ;), but lets say for this contests sake that the buildings are at least a couple centuries old
Nate March 11th, 2005, 05:27 AM and yes i know sarajevo is not a new city, but im sure you can see what i mean by old ruins and such...
Filip March 11th, 2005, 05:28 AM Those centuries old ruins are nothing but rocks piled one on top of the other. Real ruins are those that show degraded human achievement. In this case Sarajevo is the perfect contender. It's not a rock you're looking at, it's a skyscraper, mosque, church, apartment block, etc...
Sarajevo has a much bigger wow factor in this case, it's not a long forgotten castle. It's a real city.
Sarajka March 11th, 2005, 05:29 AM Okay, what about ancient buildings ruined recently? :D
Sarajka March 11th, 2005, 05:31 AM Can we count the Stari Most at Mostar, since it's been rebuilt? What are the rules! :D
Nate March 11th, 2005, 05:31 AM Okay, what about ancient buildings ruined recently? :D
you sure are in a debatable mood today arent you?
Sarajka March 11th, 2005, 05:32 AM Well I caught your post before you edited it - so yes. :D Hehehe. ;)
Nate March 11th, 2005, 05:32 AM Can we count the Stari Most at Mostar, since it's been rebuilt? What are the rules! :D
I dont think we can use things that are rebuilt... they have to still be in ruins...
Nate March 11th, 2005, 05:34 AM Well I caught your post before you edited it - so yes. :D Hehehe. ;)
youve caught a couple of posts before i editted them. are you just refreshing on this page? :P
Sarajka March 11th, 2005, 05:37 AM Yes - hahaha. (I quit smoking a week ago)
Here is Stari Grad Mostar. It includes the Old Bridge. The area is still not completely rebuilt, and it was built in the 1500s so it's ancient enough. I REALLY think it qualifies...
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y34/sarajka_mevlana/most2.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y34/sarajka_mevlana/most1.jpg
Nate March 11th, 2005, 05:42 AM do you have any pics of when it was in ruins? sorry i dont know much about the stari most so i dont know when it was rebuilt or anything :S... and i suppose if you find some better pics of the ruined portions it would work... i dont really see much of a ruined portion to that pic. and that second pic is behind the bridge so it doesnt really count ;)
however this is sergeis idea so i suppose the ultimate decision what qualifies as ruins is up to him...
Sarajka March 11th, 2005, 05:47 AM Uggh. :) How do you not know about Stari Most? You must've ignored it on purpose. :)
Well, it's officiall the longest, highest, and oldest stone bridge in Europe, and unofficially the same thing in the world. It was destroyed in 1993 by Croatian nationalists as a spiritual attack against all Bosniaks, as well as moderate Croatians. It was put back together, piece by piece, over a decade and reopened last year. Even Prince Charles attended the ceremonies, and they were broadcast around the world - they say the population of Mostar grew by 1/4 based on foriegn journalists alone. ;)
It is rebuilt, the actual span itself, but as you can see the buttresses (top photo) still need a little work. There is also some work to be done in the nearby buildings that are not "on the bridge", but built into the same stone. This includes the tower on the left side, as well as the first three of our shops on the right side - all of which still need some work. ;)
Sergei March 11th, 2005, 05:50 AM @Mila :)
Your first nomination, I hope was a joke. This is really a contest for older ruins, at least earlier than 19th century.
About Stari Most - I've never been there, so you tell me is it really a "ruin"? I mean, it looks perfectly normal on the pictures. The buildings have to specifically be in "ruins"! ;)
