www.sercan.de December 5th, 2008, 02:57 PM Was played in Poliesportiu Andorra
http://www.andorra2005.ad/ca/jocs05/seus/Andorra/poliesportiu.aspx
I dunno if we must count it. But i'm sure is the biggest sport stadium or arena in Andorra, nowayadays there are plans in Andorra of building a new football stadium because of Comunal being too small
PS: The arena nowadays is 4000, not 5000.
DOu you have an exact number of the match?
Kazurro December 5th, 2008, 03:16 PM ACB webpage says 4400. I dunno if that's the match which most attenande. But I suppose so because it is the most important match played by Andorra in ACB League
Festina Andorra-FC Barcelona, 4400 1st round ACB Playoff, 20-04-1995 (Basketball)

PaulFCB December 5th, 2008, 07:52 PM 72,762 - Romania
Stadionul Lia Manoliu , 25.11.1962, Romania-Spain, football
My grandfather told me in his wide encyclopedia of games he has been to that it's not Romania-Spain in 1962 and most probably Romania-Italy in 1983 for the national team.
For sure, Dinamo Bucharest-Galatasaray Istanbul in 1956 has Romania's European Cups Record attendance with 85.000 people on the first game played by a Romanian team in the ECC. While the number at Romania-Spain also a 3-1 was more close to 80.000 and a bit more at Romania-Italy 1-0.
Unofficially...in the summer time in Bucharest there were played some games between Dinamo, Steaua, Progesul and Sportul. Because it was summer time and the weather perfect, people in vacation during the harsh communist years at a Dinamo-Sportul games some people tell me there was not enough space in the stands ( with no seats ) for all the people to stay so they occupied the athletics track and the number might have been around 100.000.
G.C. December 5th, 2008, 10:36 PM do you have an exact number?
This was before attendances were published, infact this year is the first time they have been published from the league was started back in 1891.
Attendances were kept in house and within the Association.

In Romania for example before 1989 it was impossible to give a exact number of spectators. You can see things more precise on the internet but the best source is the people that went to that game. My grandfather used to go in the years when Romania played Spain to all the important games in Bucharest of the National Team and told me that it's clear there were a lot more in 1983 at Romania-Italy also there's commentators that know more precise numbers. I can tell you that the record in Romania at a non-international and non-league game is well over 90.000 with possibility of over 100.000 on a summer tournament in Bucharest between the local clubs but i can't prove it to you. The press was weak and controlled in those years.
But one thing is for sure, the attendance record at a official game is around 85.000-90.000 at Dinamo-Galatasaray in 1956 the first round of the first ever ECC.

Celt67 December 23rd, 2008, 05:05 PM Bit of a mismatch to compare the two old stadia, I have attended both and have always thought that Wembley was much bigger. Hampden was nearly all terraces with just 14,000 seats in total. The old Wembley had approx 50,000 seats, and seeing that you got more than 3 times the capacity for terracing compared to seats then I would say that Wembley was a much bigger stadium physically. This is proven by the fact that the all seated Wembley had a capacity of 80,000 whereas Hampden, even after expansion on one side has a very low capacity of just 50,000. If Wembley had just one side of seats it would've comfortably accommodated Hampden's record crowd, and still had twice as many seats.
Out of interest, do you know the record "average attendance" (over a whole season) for Celtic and Rangers?
Celtic average around 58,000-ish and Rangers 49,000-ish.
To your other point..Hampden physically hasn't been expanded...it's been reduced.
I've tried to illustrate it crudely I admit in this...blue is seating, red was standing...that was Hampden at it's largest.
http://i42.************/2jdkiep.jpg
The Stand to the south may be larger in floor area..but it's mostly executive boxes and press areas...so the additional seating isn't as great as it looks.
The 'Celtic end' to the right of the picture alone was once measured to hold 81,000 people...and the opposing end 64,000. Thankfully , these limits were never tested. ( not legally, anyway as "jumping the turnstyles" was a common occurrance here ).
Also, the North Stand was demolished in 1981.
Yes Wembley was probably physically bigger, but as this photo illustrates... the Hampden terracing used to be so much larger than the current seating plan would indicate.

Celt67, thanks but I know what celtic and Rangers current averages are, just wondered what they were in the days of terracing and boom attendances etc. I know both had capacities of over 90,000 in their heyday, and wondered what the averages were in those seasons. I agree that Hampden trimmed the terraces, but they greatly increased the mainstands capacity during redevelopment, and I'm sure this would almost amount to the loss of seated capacity at the ends. In which case I'd be surprised if a seated hampden could have ever yeilded more than 60,000 seats without multiple tiers etc. I went when it was as shown in the picture. The atmosphere was amazing, but the terracing was a mess.

This article below gives Italy v Germany in 1952 as 125,000
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Siro
What is the Serie A attendance record? Surely a Milanese derby at that time would've drawn huge crowds?
OPO.RVK December 30th, 2008, 07:37 PM In Estádio das Antas, the old Porto stadium, I went to games in the 80's with 90000 people attending.
When I remember those games, where it were 2 in the space of one, where you should go to the bathroom before the game, because during the game the stairs were full of people and would take you 20 min. to get to the toilletes.
It was in those big games always an iminent tragedy, were only the good sense kept away any thing bad.
But I've to admit that a thing was unforgetable.
In those days the away team entered always some minutes before the home team.
So when the other team entered in the field it was 90 000 people
whistling at the same time so loud that the visitors probably had their audition damaged.
When it was Porto time to enter it was an explosion that you can imagine.
Now the Dragăo Stadium with the 52000 confortably seated viewers seems an Opera House compare to the old stadium.

lpioe January 2nd, 2009, 02:39 PM so what's the average per game? how many games has a MLB-season?
Average is about 30k, which is impressive considering every team has at least 162 games.
As far as I know the given attendance are tickets sold not actual gate entrance though.

Dzwonsson January 3rd, 2009, 12:59 AM ^^ @www.sercan.de: I just still don't know why do you keep the Polish attendance record on 71,469, if in fact it was 120,000 during the game between Górnik Zabrze and Austria Wien played on september 18th, AD 1963. ;)

Early this year King promoted Chavez's fifth-round knockout of Greg Haugen that set an outdoor boxing attendance record of 136,274 spectators at Aztec Stadium in Mexico City.

For Germany the "official" attendance record is 110,000 at a world cup qualifying match (GDR vs. Czech Republic/ 27.10.1957) in Leipzig. Capacity of the old Zentralstadion was 110,000.

Der offizielle Zuschauerrekord wurde am 27. Oktober 1957 aufgestellt, 110.000 Fans erlebten die 1:4-Pleite der DDR im WM-Qualifikationsspiel gegen die CSSR.

Napoli - Perugia 1-1
Serie A 1979-1980
89,365
Can be possible that some other matches, in Roma or Milano, can had 90,000+ but nothing found...

ReiAyanami March 16th, 2009, 09:18 PM I know that the Guinness world record for basketball game attendance holds the ancient Panathenaic Stadium in Athens in 4 April 1968 (AEK-SLAVIA PRAGUE 89-82) but I cannot find an official number. lukaszek89 March 17th, 2009, 02:23 PM unofficial attedance record is 130 000 in Stadion Śląski, Poland 2-0 England, WC qualifications, 6.06.1973...:)
d_1q8Ff1-PA :) watch 2nd goal:)
( now there are two attendance records for Poland on the list:) 71,469 should be removed )
AndreÇB March 18th, 2009, 04:34 PM All those statistics continue to ignore the most attended soccer match in history, the final game of the 1950 World Cup at Maracana Stadium, Uruguay 2 v. Brazil 1. Estimated attendance: 200,000.
it was almost impossible to estimate the real attendance for this game in 1950... the stadium had no walls, and there was no tickets... it was an "open doors" game.
... nowadays Maracană is a 95.000 seater... but usually only 75k are sold, once kids under 12 have free entrance on the lower stands...
Topher51 March 31st, 2009, 03:53 AM By that I mean within an enclosed stadium rather than trackside events(horse racing, motorsport etc). The 1950 WC final at the Maracana with just under 200,000 springs to mind as does the 1923 "white horse" FA cup final with rumours putting the attendance as high as 250,000.
Technically NASCAR falls under the "no motorsports" criteria, but Bristol Motor Speedway, in Bristol, Tennessee, USA has more of a stadium feel to it. The track is a 1/2 mile long oval (about 800 meters), but the stands wrap all the way around and are sky high!
Seating capacity is listed at 165,000 and I wouldn't be surprised if there were another 5,000 people working in the pits and in the stands during the race. The track sells out twice a year for the Sprint Cup races and probably draws over 80,000 a few other times a year. There has been talk of playing an American college football game there in the past, but as far as I know that hasn't happened yet.

ReiAyanami March 31st, 2009, 02:19 PM Motor sports in stadiums seem very interesting, especially if there are great cars and great teams. I'm not very fond of American motor sports, they seem quite dull and unsophisticated. World Rally Championship and F1 are surely the best. This is from Athens super special stage Rally Acropolis, part of the world championship (2006) (Poor OAKA, it has hosted everything imaginable...)

This is one sexy stadium! I hope they can build the roof this elegant. And the oval shape in the roof contrasts to the straighter shape of the inner field. But still the tribunes curves slightly. Yummy!

FraserM June 12th, 2009, 05:25 PM Also, for Czech Republic, the biggest crowd is certainly not 44,200. It may be hard to verify but the Strahov Stadium used to hold 220,000 (it's big enough to hold nine football pitches!).
So the list should perhaps begin

ReiAyanami July 20th, 2009, 10:32 PM What about negative records, lol
I read that in a low interest PAO-Panionios game in April they had like 6.190 tickets in the 71k OAKA lol
I also read that PAO's volley team has a record of around 15.000 in OAKA indoor, but I don't know about basket cause they have passed the 20.000 mark many times in there.
EDIT: btw Sercan, some sources say that in 4 April 1968, during the basketball match between AEK and Slavia Prague (?) in the Panathinaiko Stadium there where more than 80.000 attendance. I need someone to verify this... (Konstantinoupolis hehe XD)
Patrick July 20th, 2009, 11:38 PM the lowest attendance (except games closed to public as a sanction by the association) at a german Bundesliga game was in 1965/66. The game between Tasmania 1900 Berlin and Borussia Mönchengladbach was only followed by 827 spectators due to the catastrophic results in the matchdays before. In the same season, but earlier, 81500 watched Tasmania playing against Karlsruher SC.

CharlieP July 19th, 2010, 01:56 PM Following a thought I had yesterday, here's a bit of a research project for everybody... I'm trying to create a list of the highest officially-recorded attendances since 1 January 2001 in each sport - if you can fill in any gaps or improve on something already listed please update.
EDIT: The list is just for stadium/arena-based sports, so no putting things like "N million - The Tour de France, all over France, several weeks" :)
American Football: 112,118 - Michigan v Ohio State, Michigan Stadium, 22 November 2003
Association Football: No idea - a game at Azteca Stadium?
Australian Rules Football: 100,012 - Geelong v Hawthorn, Melbourne Cricket Ground, 26 September 2008
Baseball: 115,300 - Los Angeles Dodgers v Boston Red Sox, LA Coliseum, 29 March 2008
Basketball: ?
Cricket: 89,155 - Australia v England, Melbourne Cricket Ground, 26 December 2006
Ice Hockey: 77,803 - Germany v USA, Veltins-Arena, 7 May 2010
Rugby League: 90,414 - Newcastle Knights v Parramatta Eels, Stadium Australia, 30 September 2001
Rugby Union: Probably the 2001 Bledisloe Cup, but I can't find the attendance.
Tennis: ?
Will737 July 19th, 2010, 02:17 PM You are wrong about the AFL; its 100,002 at Hawthorn v Geelong '08 GF at the MCG. The cricket probably be an Indian game or Boxing Day test '06 at the MCG.

Oops, you're right. 100,012 actually. :D
I'll put in the Boxing Day Test as well, and leave it for somebody to find a higher documented example. I nearly had to ask what date it was. :ohno:
Will737 July 19th, 2010, 02:27 PM And it was in '08.
Walbanger July 19th, 2010, 02:31 PM Rugby Union: 83,418 - Australia v New Zealand, ANZ Stadium, 7 August 2004 (This may be overtaken in a couple of weeks with the Springboks v All Blacks at Soccer City).

I wouldn't mind if MLB sent an exhibition game down to Australia to see with we can get the record back. Given the right promotion, Victorians will make it their duty to attend. ;)
Walbanger July 19th, 2010, 02:40 PM That'd almost certainly get 90,000.
The Soccer City game?
Hopefully, that would be awesome. I seriously doubt that SANZAR are going to cover seating like FIFA, so if Soweto is excited about hosting the Boks and the biggest brand in Rugby "those blasted All Blacks" they should nudge 90 000.
CharlieP July 19th, 2010, 03:02 PM Well ANZ stadium was half a work site for 2 years after the Olympics, depending on the progress, the ARU may never have had the opportunity to pull more.
The 2007 Bledisloe Cup match at the MCG drew 79 322, so Australia didn't pull more at a larger venue, probably more because of the Wallabies being pretty average in resent years. The 6 nations may have pulled a few over 80 000.
The Wallabies managed 109,874 in 2000 and 107,042 in 1999 at Stadium Australia, and 90,119 in 1997 at the G, but those are all outside the scope of my question. :D
The highest attendance I can find in the Northern Hemisphere this century is 81,601 for the 2009 Guinness Premiership Final, so that 2004 Bledisloe makes the list, for now. I'm guessing in 2001 they only just managed to get that year's phase of work completed in time for the NRL Grand Final (I remember one end being a building site for the 3rd Lions Test).

Makes you wonder how they managed that without half of them getting crushed to death. They certainly couldn't do that in the Maracana now, despite the basic structure of the stadium being the same. Officially it only holds 88,992 now (according to fussballtempel.net).
By the way, most of that crowd went home disappointed because Uruaguay won. An omen for 2014 perhaps...?

The first event held at the stadium was the FA Cup final on 28 April 1923 between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United. This is known as the White Horse Final. Such was the eagerness of fans and casual observers to attend the final at the new national stadium that vast numbers of people crammed through the 104 turnstiles into the stadium, far exceeding its official 127,000 capacity. The crowds overflowed onto the pitch as there was no room on the terraces. Estimates of the number of fans in attendance range from 240,000 to well over 300,000. It is estimated that another 60,000 were locked outside the gates. The FA were forced to refund 10% of the total gate money to fans unable to reach the terraces. The White Horse Final has the highest ever unofficial "non-racing" sports attendance in the world, which is very unlikely to be broken in the near future. (This claim, however, is disputed, as the Maracana held (officially) 199,854 fans for the decisive match of the 1950 World Cup between Brazil and Uruguay.)

It's worth bearing in mind that press estimates of crowds sizes (anywhere, not just at football matches) are usually wildly inaccurate, and overstated. The more conservative estimates of under 150,000 are probably nearer the mark.

Rev Stickleback April 22nd, 2012, 12:41 PM Two or three weeks ago, Saracens v Harlequins at Wembley attracted a world record crowd for a Rugby Union club match, with 83,761 there.
One report contrasted the game now with the start of the professional era in the 90s, when 5000 would have been a capacity crowd for the fixture.
It does have to be said that their typical crowds are nowhere near that figure. The league just arranges one or two fixtures a year at Wembley or Twickenham with the express intention of getting headline-grabbing crowds, as well as hopefully boosting the appeal of the game.
