By that I mean within an enclosed stadium rather than trackside events(horse racing, motorsport etc). The 1950 WC final at the Maracana with just under 200,000 springs to mind as does the 1923 "white horse" FA cup final with rumours putting the attendance as high as 250,000.

I know the Scotland v England match in 1937 at Hampden Park attracted the official number of 149,415 spectators. Sources do say that there were more, considering there were a lot of people in the stadium without tickets.

Maracana stadium had a record attendance of 199,854 during the Brazil vs. Uruguay match in the World Cup Final of 1950. Nowadays it's only a 70000 all-seater.

Which is remarkable, considering most older stadiums that become all-seaters usually loose about 1/3rd - 1/4th of the capacity while Maracana lost about 2/3.

I'd guess that depends on how much seating they had in the first place, most english football grounds already had alot of seating prior to the taylor report. Look futher back and you a the difference though as for example my club's(Crystal Palace) record attenance at their current ground(Selhurst Park) was over 50,000 in the 1950's yet as an all seater ground it only holds a maxium of 26,000 even with a redevolped end thats far larger than the original stand.

Actually to be specific, the crowd in the Maracana was 199 854.

Just some extra info: The largest stadium in the world is Rungnado May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea, and it has a capacity of 150,000.

I seem to recall a cricket match in India pulled in something outrageous like 950,000 over 5 days.

The shite horse final was massive mainly because I think it was the first final to be played at Wembley, it got fans from every team coming to watch it.

The pictures of it are truly memorable ...

The first ever event to be held in the stadium was the FA Cup Final on the 28th April 1923 between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United, which became famous as 'the white horse cup final'.

The crowds swarmed onto the pitch prior to kick off and the match would have been abandoned if not for the heroic actions of PC George Scorey and his white horse Billy. Who controlled the crowd of 250,000, allowing the game to be kicked off and the eventual 2-0 victory by Bolton.

I dont think a racetrack, even an oval, really counts as a stadium. That should be a field in the centre where everyone can see everything.

aggregate crowds for cricket seems wrong as well. Havent Melbourne actually crossed 500,000 for an ashes test back when they werent limited to 5 days.

For a field stadium it must be wembley 1923 or Maracana 1950, possibly Hampden in the 1930´s

What's the record largest attendance for a basketball game in your country? Just one entry per country please. Indicate whether the game was pro basketball, college, 2 national teams, and any other interesting tidbits associated with the game

Here's mine to start things off.

Canada 36,131

Pro basketball game in March 1996 at the Skydome, a Canadian Football and Baseball Stadium reconfigured for basketball.

Chicago 108

The Basketbowl, between Michigan State University and the University of Kentucky was the most attended basketball game in history. It occurred on December 13, 2003 at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan setting an attendance record of 78,129. Kentucky won the game 79-74. The previous record of 75,000 was held by the Harlem Globetrotters during their exhibitional game at Berlin Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany.

I Know I'm not American or German but shit happens.

During the Sydney 2000 Paralympics a record crowd of 16,000 watched Australia versus the United States of America in the men's wheelchair basketball in the SuperDome (Acer Arena), the largest crowd for any basketball event in Australia.

I was at a Manchester Giants game in the early days of the MEN (then NYNEX) Arena in about 1995/6. I think that with curiosity, novelty value and introductory pricing, there was over 12,000 people there (mostly kids with those folded, inflatable plastic tubes that they bash together and make a racket)*, which was probably more than the capacity of any other indoor arena in the UK then or since.

It might even be more than 12k. I was in the second tier. Anyway, hardly much when compared to the list above.

Given that we haven't had the need to convert a football stadium into a basketball venue, I'd say that this is probably about as high as the UK figure would be for basketball. I certainly can't see where a larger attendance would have happened.

Incidentally, since then, the attendances fell off, UK basketball fell back into near-obscurity and the Giants returned to the Manchester Velodrome (about 4k).

*How old does that make me sound?!

Momentum builds as Athens gears up for the 2007 Final Four

Basketball fans, get ready, because Athens certainly is doing so. Basketball takes center stage in the Greek capital at one of Europe's biggest sports coliseums, Athens Olympic Indoor Hall (OAKA), when the Euroleague Final Four is held there May 4 to 6. With less than three months to one of the biggest weekends in world basketball, the pulse is set to fever pitch, as basketball fans all over Europe anticipate the start of the tournament.

One reason: fans know that Athens is a dedicated basketball destination with a strong history of hosting tournaments. The birthplace of the Olympic Games and host of the 2004 Summer Olympics, not to mention the place that holds the world record for fans at one basketball game, Athens is sure to elicit a powerful sports vibe to all who attend and watch the thrilling Final Four tournament.

"The inherent Athenian sporting tradition and Olympic know-how has been put into motion once again as we prepare to host one of European basketball’s major events," says Athens Mayor Mr. Nikitas Kaklamanis. "Once again, we are prepared and excited to bring basketball fans all over the world a champion-caliber tournament."

"Greece is a basketball country without a doubt," says Jordi Bertomeu, the Euroleague Basketball CEO. "It is also true that the Olympics showed everybody the capability Athens and Greece possess to host such sports events. Since the founding of the Euroleague in the summer of 2000, Greece and its clubs have had a very important role in our organization."

At a glance:

· 18,000 - One of the biggest crowds ever in European basketball history, 18,000 fans, filled sold-out OAKA last spring for the final game of the Euroleague playoff quarterfinals between Panathinaikos and Tau Ceramica.

· Six - Athens becomes the sixth city to host the Euroleague Basketball Final Four after Bologna, Barcelona, Tel Aviv, Moscow and Prague.

· Two - True to the game, Athens boasts two Euroleague teams: Panathinaikos and Olympiakos. In fact, OAKA is the home court of Panathinaikos.

· 1998 - Athens hosts the 1998 World Championships.

· 1995 - Athens hosts the 1995 European Championships for Men and the World Championships for Juniors.

· 1993 - Athens hosts the Euroleague Final Four at the Peace and Friendship Stadium.

· 1992 - Athens hosts the European Championships for Men Under 21.

· 1989 - Athens hosts the Cup Winners’ Cup Final between Real Madrid and Caserta.

· 1987 - Athens hosts the 1987 European Championships.

· 1985 -- Athens hosts the Champions’ Cup Final between Cibona and Real Madrid.

· 1968 - An estimated 80,000 fans - still a world record for one basketball game - fill the Panathinaiko Stadium (Kallimarmaro) to watch AEK-Slavia Prague in the Cup Winners’ Cup final.

· 2006 - Announcement that Athens will host Euroleague 2007 Final Four Tournament.

Not a single basketball specific building so far.

Actually, Acer Arena in Sydney is a basketball specific arena. It was built not only for the Olympics but for the Sydney Kings Basketball Club also. However, they moved out after 1-2 years due to falling attendance and back to their original home at the inner city, 10,500 seat Sydney Entertainment Centre. Just that like most other arena's of its size (capacity is 17,471) its also used for events such as concerts, conventions, indoor motor cross etc.

It is still the biggest indoor stadium in Australia.

Great spectacle and all but how much of the action would you actually see?The same question I asked myself, both with these photos as with Sercan's post of the Lucas Oil basketball configuration rendering.

A very expensive and technically complex solution would be (and something I already designed on paper once) a stadion where you can construct or slide in pitches at different levels, a bit like the original Wembley plans with the possibility to construct a platform with athletic facilities (running track, long jump etc.) on top of tier 1. That was their first idea for the Olympics bid, as we all know they chose another option: the construction of a separate Olympic stadium.

This was a one time ever crowd. Due to an error the away team (Heerenveen) received less tickets then they were supposed to. So extra temporary stands were erected bringing the capacity of the Feyenoord stadium up from 65.000+ to 69.300.

^^ Yes, we probably could have had such crowds but the stadiums just were not big enough. If the expansion of the Amsterdam ArenA goes through to 70.000 the record will finally be broken. This expansion will probably take place after 2010.

The new Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam should be ready at the latest in 2016. If the proposed capacity of 106.000 goes through, (last I have heard it is most the most likely capacity) we will have a good number in the overall crowds list and one of the highest numbers reached with only seating spectators in the stadium.

Until that time, the 69.300 figure will have to do for us :D.

Are you sure this was the biggest? From what I know, the Liga Indonesia final in 2005 gathered 122 000 supporters. 105 000 tickets to Persija Jakarta and 17 000 to Persipura Jayapura.

Sercan- it's hard to give you numbers other than estimated for Poland and supposedly other countries of the former Eastern Block- there were only estimations as official numbers back then.

Two corrections,
1 -When Maracană opened it's capacity were 183.000
nowadays it's about 96.000

2- The 199.854 crowd in 1950 final record is an unofficial number.
the official crowd (people who paid tickets) that day were 173.850.

And the official record is 183.341 at 31/08/69 Brasil 1-0 Paraguai WC qualifying

However, according to FIFA.COM:
The Final was played on 16 July 1950, in front of an official crowd of 174,000, although reliable sources put this figure much higher. One such person was Joao Havelange, the President of FIFA between 1974 and 1988, who recollects: "There were some 220,000 people in the stadium that day," a figure equivalent to 10 percent of Río de Janeiro's population at the time.

I don't doubt that 220.000 people watched that match. My grandpa were there and he has the same opinion of J. Havelange.

An interesting data is the best attendances in Brazil

there are some missing crowds, but, it's the better I found.

That's what I am trying to tell you. :) This is official, but still remains estimations only as the control at the gates in Poland back in the 60's was far from perfect (or should I say didn't exist?) :) Even if we don't take this into account, next in line will be series of events at stadion Slaski or stadion Dziesieciolecia that according to all sources gather 100 000. You know how it was- propaganda like this kind of numbers :P

I'm afraid there's no chance for that at this moment. I would need to seek historians and spend a month in libraries :) But even then I doubt I would find anything better than the 120 000. Simple fact- the communist party had no interest in informing people about the exact number of entries and not all sporting events were admissioned by tickets, not all tickets were counted, so this number seem to be the best to find... especially that it's officially given by the Stadion Slaski authorities and Silesian Football Federation. If they haven't got any number more accurate, I don't think other people would.

Although official website of Zaglebie Lubin (last season's Polish champions) says it was... 108 000. But where did they take that number from? No idea :)

If that doesn't convince you- tough luck :) I haven't got that much time to get anything better...

Acording to the Suderj(government entity responsible for the stadium)
http://www.suderj.rj.gov.br/maracana.asp
It's 183.341

Acording to the research I posted the 5 biggest crowds were
1 16/07/50 199.854 Brasil 1-2 Uruguai World Cup Maracană [173.850p]
2 21/03/54 195.513 Brasil 4-1 Paraguai WC Qualif Maracană [174.599p]
3 15/12/63 194.603 Fluminense 0-0 Flamengo C.Carioca Maracană [177.656p]
4 31/08/69 183.341 Brasil 1-0 Paraguai WC Qualif Maracană
5 04/04/76 174.770 Flamengo 1-1 Vasco C.Carioca Maracană

In fact,
the official record is 183.341 (people who paid tickets)
but lots of people in that game did not paid for tickets and are not counted.

Ehh... those Turks :P It is official, the most official of all official I found, it's posted on the websites of first and only institutions that come to my mind regarding this number :) . You may write the stadium capacity or not write anything as well, your call, I'm not pressuring :) Maybe in time I will get the exact number (yeah, sure :P)

If not that game, then there's quite some bunch of 100 000 games, but the problem remains. So what else? writing the capacities of either Stadion Slaski (yet 87 000 is again- not exact) or Stadion Dziesieciolecia (71 008), but we all know this is not true and there was no habit of giving exact numbers in Poland until... now :) So what? 47 202 form last Euro qualifiers? :)
Except then this whole ranking makes no sense to me...

Yea, Soldier Field in Chicago. Actually Soldier Field hosted a high school prep game in 1937 Austin vs. Leo which was reported to be over 120,000. The most Soldier Field ever (not sport related) held was 250,000 for the Catholic Church's Marian Year Tribute in 1954(from Wiki).

Record attendance: 75,263 (Olympiacos CFP vs Hamburger SV - on 3/11/1983) Olympic Stadium

not the Largest crowd but the loudest

LIVERPOOL FC.. loudest in history,
With less than a minute on the clock in the Carling Cup Final, Fernando Morientes steals a yard on William Gallas to deliver the inch-perfect cross to John Arne Riise.

His deadly left boot meets the ball perfectly, and the Liverpool fans rise to celebrate an emphatic strike and the perfect start.

But this was no run-of-the-mill cheer. The cauldron of noise into which the Millennium Stadium erupted was reportedly the loudest in history, reaching a massive 130.7 decibels.

That’s 2 decibels higher than the previous record set by the Denver Broncos American Football fans in 2000 and louder than a Concorde taking off!

You are forgetting the game mexico vs brasil in 1969 with 120,000 mexicans in Azteca stadium, way before the controls, seats and the tv screens that the stadium have now, which reduced the capacity to 114,000 which is the official capacity.

Might need to look up accurate figures for the White City Stadium. Its difficult to find concrete numbers but this was apparently larger than wembley, mainly due to the enourmous size of the bowl which could house a number of different sporting events. Its most famous for the 1908 Olympics.

Capacity estimates I've seen vary between 90000 and 150000.

I believe the inner ring on this photo is the athletics track and the outer the cycling one. Gives an idea of the size of the bowl.

White Horse final is legendary within the UK. First final ever to be played at the Empire stadium, later to be renamed Wembley.

The game featured West Ham United and Bolton Wanderers, and such was the eagerness of fans and casual observers to attend the final at the new national stadium that vast numbers of people crammed into the stadium, far exceeding its official 127,000 capacity. The crowds overflowed onto the pitch as there was no room on the terraces. Estimates of the number of fans in attendance range from 240,000 to well over 300,000. It is estimated that another 60,000 were locked outside the gates. The FA were forced to refund 10% of the total gate money to fans unable to reach their seats.

Interesting that this figure is also not exact
115,300 tickets were available and sold pregame..In other words, this attendance figure was based on the number of available tickets sold ,not the actual amount of people through the turnstyles

115,300 was predicted well before the game.

Most US sporting events have moved to tickets sold instead of people in seats. It's easier to count and gets down to what the teams want... tickets sold regardless of they could make it or not.

This becomes much more evident for teams/sports with a large percentage of their seats going to season ticket holders. Many season ticket holders can't attend every game in a season (e.g. all 82 games in a baseball season), but are still counted anyway since it's a sold ticket. Games in the middle of a workday are notorious for having an announced attendance many times the actual people in the stands.

I actually don't remember the last time I went to a sporting event with a turnstile.

it is entirely possible to fit 115,000 people in the stadium...the official capacity of 92,000 is when the stadium is in football mode

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/43/11-11-06-LA-Coliseum-USC-UO.jpg

as you can see, many of the seats behind the endzone have been closed off and temporary stands have been placed closer to the field...when the stadium was used for basebal the temp stands were moved and the extra seats were opened up, allowing thousands of extra seats to be filled

have you ever had your ticket scanned while walking into a game? If they went by tickets sold i think a large amount of games would be sellouts when they arent...The Redskins have sold out every game since the 60's and FedEx Field has never been at capacity for a game.

OK..I never realised those seats behind the endzone werent sold for Football..All I have heard is that the capacity of LA Coliseum was 92,000...If thats the case, then there are probably over 100,000 permanant seats in the venue, but no sport or event (except baseball) would actually use them all.
Interesting.

Still ..you have to question that 115,300 figure based on tickets sold.

Correct. I don't know why everyone's arguing about the Dodgers game, when Soldier Field in the 20's and 30's held 120,000+ and sold out not only the Notre Dame/Army game, but also high school championship games (1937).

id believe it...the organizers of the game were pretty set on breaking the attendance record...im sure there was 115,000+ at the game

i dont think a lot of people would have missed that game if they had tickets. its not likely they would ever get the opportunity to see the game like that again

in the end it doesnt even matter as the game was not the highest attended game in American history anyway

Though not a hard fast rule... more often than not, most US sports do count tickets sold (or distributed) as the official attendance. MLB's (Major League Baseball) official attendance is tickets sold. NBA (basketball) and NHL (hockey) use tickets distributed (tickets sold + complimentary tickets given). The NFL allows teams to individually decide, but most of the ones I know go with the larger figure (which of course is tickets sold).

Like the NFL, the NCAA allows colleges to use their own method. But my experience is that most use tickets sold. At Texas, we don't have turnstiles and there is a mix of electronic (bar coded) and paper tickets. They announce the attendance every game in the second quarter. There is no way they would be able to reconcile no shows. I can't speak to how every school or conference handles it, but in talking to friends at other Big XII and Big 10 schools it's handled as tickets sold. The NCAA also supports either method for determining Division I status. (15k average attendance for D-1).

I mean think about it from a business standpoint. What incentive do these teams/schools from quoting a smaller number? It's more work and it's not their fault if a ticket holder decided not to go. They can't resell that seat. It's simpler and reinforces the idea of how popular the team is.

According to stretfordend.co.uk (http://www.stretfordend.co.uk/crowds/overall.html), which is officially recognised as the stat provider for manutd.com, the official attendance for the away leg of the 1957 European Cup Semi Final between Real Madrid and Manchester United (on 11th April 1957) was 135,000.

Also, the same fixture at the same stage of the 1968 European Cup attracted 125,000.

Both these figures are higher than the 124,000 quoted here for attendances in Spain.

The Green Bay Packers (NFL), famous for their season ticket waiting list, do give the turnstyle count as their official attendance. Lambeau Field now seats about 72K and seldom are there more than a few hundred 'no shows'.

Yes, IMHO, the Bristol Motor Speedway (Bristol, TN USA - NASCAR) is literally a stadium with a racetrack inside of it. 160K crowds are normal there on 'Cup' race days. I also agree that the 400-450K crowds (they never release official attendance figures) at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway are the largest 'single event' turnouts at any sporting venue, likely at least doubling up on whatever is #2.

Nope. Final question on JEOPARDY! tonite: what is the annual sporting event in the US that attracts an estimated 279,895 paying fans?

So 135,000 isn't estimated right?"!

Well, it's estimated in the sense that I very much doubt that there was exactly a multiple of a thousand there and consequently, a figure rounded to the nearest thousand was given. It does however purport to be the official attendance, as much as one can say so.

As recently as the 1980's official attendances for FA Cup finals at Wembley were all 100,000. Clearly, both official and estimated. Even today, it's difficult to get official attendance figures for games playes in continental Europe. If I check the papers here the day after, say Matchday #1 of a Champions League season, some figures are accurate in the sense that we expect them to have been counted correctly, others (even if official) are multiples of 1,000 or even 10,000. Knowing that, the validity of a figure from a game in Spain 50 years ago is never going to withstand the greatest scrutiny.

I'm not sure how accurate Real Madrid were back then, but all I'm saying is that the official Man Utd stats website lists it as the highest attendance at a match in which United played. Given the source, it's reasonable to expect that the figure is in some way official.

I appreciate that your listing will always use the official figure over the estimated figure where they differ, such as the '23 Cup Final and I would agree with that. On the one hand the official figure may not be anywhere near the truth, on the other hand, guesswork is no better alternative. It's best to go with official figures where more than one exists.

One thing I know for sure is that over 400 people were killed in a crush in the early 1980s at Moscow's Luzhniki stadium and it was covered up to the extent even the players playing that night had no idea it occured. The Soviet officials at that time covered the whole event up, threatening the families of the fallen to keep quiet.

The greatest tragedy in a stadium was in Moscow.

Largest crowds were at Stadio Circus Maximus in Rome.

In fact, as sercan said, the number 199,854 does not sound like it's estimated. But I didn't find any official sources acusing how they count that nunber. In Brazil x Uruguai, at least 173.000 people were in the stadium.(those paid tickets). And lots of people entered for free. The 183.000 record is the official record for paying people.

The infield measure rule makes more sense to me. While the sport played on the field/pitch differs, it's pretty close. i.e. American football field is close to a football pitch.

Interestingly there were plans for Virginia Tech and Tennessee to play a football game at Bristol, but Tennessee had no interest.

Tennis stadiums are for me open arenas :D

Baseball: you are right. could be IMO a own catogory
Cricket ~ normal stadium catogory?

The term that would cover Baseball, Cricket, all codes of Football, and even the likes of Javelin and Shot Putt and yet exclude Ice Hockey, Basketball, Handball,Motor Racing,Horse racing,Ski Jump, Tennis etc would be "Field sports". So basically the list shows the record attendance of each nation for a field sports event.

Agreed. Having said that, the definition that I made would then make a clear distinction between Stadiums and Arenas. For example the Allianz or Amsterdam "Arenas" would then correctly be classed as stadiums and tennis outdoor "stadiums" regarded as arenas.

For Monaco a sold-out match in Stade Louis II should be the one with the highest attendance.

Well...for your information, at Scotlands 1937 game with England , the official attendance was 149,547, however a turnstyle on the mount florida end was rushed, and an estimated 20- 30,000 made it into the game for free. It was the same story one week before when the Scottish Cup Final drew a crowd of 146,433 for Celtic v. Aberdeen ( still a European record for a club match ).. and another turnstyle was burst open.
It was these two games that forced the introduction of tickets in Scotland.
But the difference between these games and wembley 1926 was, the crowd all stayed in the stands, and not all over the pitch.

Until the Maracana Stadium was built in Brazil, Hampden Park was the world's largest Football stadium, once measured to hold 184,000..(although I'm glad it never,,,it would have been a deathtrap :ohno: )

damn, jus can't find any official number for german attendance!

I guess, this one from Stuttgart is estimated, too :(
http://www.dfb.de/index.php?id=500001&no_cache=1&action=showSchema&liga=Nationalmannschaft&matchid=dfbat473&lang=D&cHash=feef61a3f3

just as this
http://www.dfb.de/index.php?id=500276&action=showSchema&liga=DDR-Nationalmannschaft&matchid=ddr13&lang=D&cHash=83be33527b
however, wikipedia says that the estimated number is around 120,000, and 100,000 is the official number. The game same year against CSSR officially attracted 110,000.

or the 2nd league game 15.03.1973 between 1860 München and FC Augsburg (Olympiastadion München) with estimated 90.000. couldn't they just count sold tickets in the 70s...?

The highest official number I found is:
http://www.expertenseite.de/index.page/question.action/open_question.oid/1696602.answer_oid/1698378.action2/view_votes.html
26.9.1969 Olympiastadion Berlin. Football. Hertha BSC Berlin - 1. FC Köln. 88,075.

Ah: the voice of reason.

Have to disagree with the last comment though Celt67. Hampden was registered to hold a tad over 184,000 if the aisles were used. From talking to someone at the 1937 Scottish Cup Final and studying the Queens Park FC archives (owners of Hampden) I am certain beyond reasonable doubt that Hampden achieved a 180,000+ crowd for that game.

Don't forget that for about 300 metres of its perimeter Hampden had a reasonably low wall. The police did not stop people climbing over because it was not their issue. Junior Omand who played for QPFC in the 50s said he saw hundreds of Celtic fans coming over the wall at the corner of the North Stand and Celtic End at a semi final in the early 60s because they had made a staircase out of wooden beer crates liberated from a local pub.

The turnstile men were also scamming the public with some nifty tricks until the stiles became linked to computers in the mid 80s.

The Wembley figure does not bear scrutiny. I'd like to know where the 75,000 extra fans stood. Hampden did not exceed capacity until it had 50,000 more spectators than Wembley. Quite what anyone saw at the back of the Celtic End though...

square Gardens?

Madison Square is a block with a park. It doesn't have anything to do with the arena's shape, just location.

From wiki:

Madison Square Garden derives its name from the park where the first two gardens were located (Madison Square) on Madison Avenue at 26th Street. As the venue moved to new locations the name still stuck, although since 1925 Madison Square Garden has been neither a garden nor on Madison Square.

and the rest of the goofy story:

The location of the first Madison Square Garden (now known as Madison Square Garden I), was at 26th Street and Madison Avenue. The site was formerly occupied by the passenger depot of the New York and Harlem Railroad. When the depot was moved to what is now the site of Grand Central Terminal in 1871, the old depot was sold to P.T. Barnum who converted it into "Barnum's Monster Classical and Geological Hippodrome." In 1876 Barnum's was converted into "Gilmore's Garden," an open air arena named in honor of Patrick Gilmore.[1] Gilmore was America's most well-known bandmaster at the time. His most famous composition was "When Johnny Comes Marching Home."

Finally, Gilmore's Garden was renamed "Madison Square Garden" by William Henry Vanderbilt and the facility was reopened to the public on May 31, 1879. The first Garden was originally designed for the sport of track cycling. This is still remembered in the name of the Madison event.

This carried over the other "garden arena," The Boston Garden.

The Boston Garden was a famous arena built in 1928 in Boston, Massachusetts. Designed by boxing promoter Tex Rickard, who also built the third incarnation of New York's Madison Square Garden, the arena was originally called the "Boston Madison Square Garden", but eventually got clipped to the Boston Garden.

It has become quite an interesting and impressive list. Hope some more forum members of still missing countries will provide their numbers.

@Sercan: this thread was a very good idea. Too bad the Netherlands are not higher ranked, but the Feyenoord Stadium "De Kuip" always had a large number of seats, even from the opening in March 1937 on, the vast majority of the capacity was made up of seats (well wooden benches actually :D). I think many numbers posted in this tread are for stadiums where at the time the majority of the spectators were standing.

But the Feyenoord Stadium was very, very modern and progressive for its time. Many stadiums caught up dozens of years later! And enough stadiums around Europe or the rest of the world still are not at its level, even when finally plans and actions are unfolding in Rotterdam to build a successor! But practically all the newer large stadiums that were built the last 20 years or so, especially in Europe since I know the football stadiums there quite well, are now better equipped facilities. Even though, when UEFA started ranking stadiums in star categories, the stadium managed to score the 5 star maximum!

Official attendance was what you said above but estimates of the number of fans in attendance range from 240,000 to well over 300,000 according to wikepedia. Regarding how far the crowd exceeded its official capacity, read the below article from wikipedia.

At one point West Ham defender Jack Tressdern became entangled in the crowd after taking a throw-in and was unable to return to the pitch in time to prevent Bolton's David Jack shooting for goal. Jack's shot hit a spectator who was standing pressed against the goal net, and knocked him unconscious. Bolton eventually won the match 2-0 to claim the Cup.

I think this, practically, has the world's record for stadium crowd.

Sercen, you might wanna add that recent 120 k attendance match between Bayern Munich and Mohan Bagun at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, India to your list. That attendence figure has been verified at Munich's own website. Should be good enough, no?

It was also a farewell match for Oliver Kahn. Below is the picture taken during the match. They say that the stadium was packed with 120,000 spectators then but there are many empty seats.

Actually they just used the capacity number you can find at stadiums sited
I still think that the stadium in India do not hold 120k

And looking at Carrerra pic i would guess the attendance was 40-50k

Unfortunately, the type of construction is sometimes the reason why we can't have official numbers.
Example for Germany: Some sources, like the Tageszeitung (http://www.taz.de/index.php?id=archivseite&dig=2006/08/03/a0196), say, that the match between
east-german champion SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt and west german champion 1. FC Kaiserslautern caused a fullfilled stadium. The stadium had 100000 seats back then, with additional stands for this game even 110000, and all were filled. The problem is, that even more uncountable people were in the stadium on day, standing around on top of the stands and on the stairs.
Fritz Walter scored the so called "Jahrhunderttor" (Goal of the century) in that game.

I'd say you can add this one, at least 100.000 spectators were there for sure, 120.000 seems to be the official estimated number

My brother was at the game in Calcutta and he was really surprised when I showed him the picture above. He said there were at least 100'000 in the stadium. It didn't look empty at all, but wasn't a complete sellout either.
The seats you can see in the picture are the only seats of the whole stadium. 90%+ of the stadium are terraces (nearly all people were sitting during the game though). So I think 120k is possible.
Ticket price was about half a dollar :D

For me, the people persistantly holding on to the dream that Wembley once hosted 260,000 - 300,000 people are English people who can't bare the thought that Hampden Park hosted larger crowds persistantly and safely than the largest English showpiece stadium, year after year.
http://i29.tinypic.com/34oow3p.gif

Bit of a mismatch to compare the two old stadia, I have attended both and have always thought that Wembley was much bigger. Hampden was nearly all terraces with just 14,000 seats in total. The old Wembley had approx 50,000 seats, and seeing that you got more than 3 times the capacity for terracing compared to seats then I would say that Wembley was a much bigger stadium physically. This is proven by the fact that the all seated Wembley had a capacity of 80,000 whereas Hampden, even after expansion on one side has a very low capacity of just 50,000. If Wembley had just one side of seats it would've comfortably accommodated Hampden's record crowd, and still had twice as many seats.

Out of interest, do you know the record "average attendance" (over a whole season) for Celtic and Rangers?

What's the attendance record to watch a sport as opposed to a ceremony? I believe the Canadian figure for the opening ceremony of the 1976 Olympics was higher than the Canadian record to watch a sport. Shouldn't we limit this to attendance records to watch sports?

Surely it isnt. A basketball team from Andorra played in Spanish League in mid-90s. I think the arena was around 5000

The attendance record to watch a sport is held by the last match of the soccer World Cup 1950, at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Venue: Maracana Stadium. Match: Brazil 1 v. Uruguay 2. Attendance: A little over 200,000.

I dunno if we must count it. But i'm sure is the biggest sport stadium or arena in Andorra, nowayadays there are plans in Andorra of building a new football stadium because of Comunal being too small

PS: The arena nowadays is 4000, not 5000.

The attendance record to watch a sport is held by the last match of the soccer World Cup 1950, at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Venue: Maracana Stadium. Match: Brazil 1 v. Uruguay 2. Attendance: A little over 200,000.

This was concerning the figure for Finland, not the world.
