The coast that surrounds the promontory of Portofino forms a protected marine area of great interest for the conservation of the bio-diversities in the Mediterranean. The various depths, the varieties of the sea beds where rocky walls are alternated with sandy areas, the caves, the different lighting conditions, the continuous exposure to the currents, determine an environment of vast richness in which many animal and plant species, more or less rare, live together.
Scuba diving reveals an underwater world that can be rarely observed in other areas: gorgonias, sponges, madrepores, prairies of posidonia oceanica and red coral of which the sea beds of Portofino are very rich. In the bay of San Fruttoso, immersions are even more interesting thanks to the presence of the bronze statue of Cristo degli Abissi, which makes this bay a destination for tourists and divers from all over the world.
On land, the Regional Nature Park that has one of the greatest concentrations of flora of the Mediterranean, a great variety of birds and invertebrates, architectures and landscapes famous in the whole world, stretches out. Among shady Apennine woods and thick Mediterranean scrub, among chestnut woods and olive groves, among farmer traditions and maritime customs, the Park of Portofino offers the typical view of the Ligurian coast that can be admired both from a naturalistic point of view and from a historical, artistic and anthropological one.

Very nice pics Ozcan, but the 6th one has nothing to do with Portofino and Liguria! :)

If someone is interested in the zones near Portofino (San Fruttuoso, Ruta), you can take a look at my site HERE (http://www.upupa.net/pix/sfruttuoso/)
