Their problem is that they did not include enough parking places in the original plan - they tried to play hard ball with the municipality and force their plan through, but were eventually given an ultimatum - add 100 extra parking spaces or reduce the occupancy of the tower by reducing its height.

The only solution was to add one more basement level - BUT - they had already completed the piling, so the piles were now all 4m too short. They will try and utilise some of the piles, but additional piling work is now required.

The moral of this story - dont try and steamroller your plans through against the wishes of the planning authority - unless you have enough wasta that is....

I am sure that if this had been a Qatari developer instead of a Dubai developer, it would have been sorted out over a Shisha (and someone might have had a new merc to drive)

Do you have any idea how much parking space did 'build' in the first place?
'Cause with a tower that high plus having a shopping mall, I'm sure it'll need tons of parking space!

I have to say that its at least good they're concidering future traffic flow from now, so that they wont fall into the same mistake they did here in bahrain, finding a parking space in manama now is close to impossible.

Nope! You are definetly wrong in this one. I personally know someone who had to reduce the height of his buildings because of parking problems. Hotels are extempt from this regulation as they require less parking space. However, for office space, there is a law reguarding this issue. To simply think a Qataris get away with it is absurd--since the VAST majority of the towers in West Bay are Qatari-owned!! Burj Dubai is the only one that is NOT Qatari owned! So, in the end it doesnt matter if your Qatari or not--objeying the municipality laws is a MUST!

100 is the figure I was told, but I can not verify. Not a large number, but where do you put them?? I understand that various options were considered, but digging down was the only viable one.

The webcam is still not working and I dont think there is improvement. Since partial completion is slated for late 2008, I think we will see a progress sometime in June or July.

As I promised before... I went to the tower's construction site
I went to the back were there was a "guard" standing there... He was Egyptian, so I asked if could take a few pics. He was like, pics aren't allowed...blah blah blah
Then I convinced him that I'll just take a couple of pics and leave and he was like, fine. Unfortunately while I was taking the pics the supervisor saw me! He was Syrian I think... Anyway, he came and asked me who I was. I said I was a "tourist"!! :D I asked if there was a problem, he said: "el 7ag mosh 3alek, el 7ag 3ala elly wagef!" He was talking about the guard.
Then he took the guard and started talking to him in a low voice and obviously he wasn't happy. I asked if I caused a problem to that guard and the supervisor said no, I asked again and got the same answer. So... I just said thanks and left. But I really felt that I caused trouble for the guard... I really hope nothing happened to him.

Thanks Omar for the pics! Actually, I talked to the main company here in Dubai about the work. They gave me the number and name of a Syrian who works there and I think this is the one who you saw. You should've asked him why the construction is sloth-pased. I like the last pic; love the Karwa ;)

I think there will be a change in design--to make this tower even more taller than the current design. I couldve sweared that the sign outside the tower says 88F, now it says 90F+Mezzanine+G+5 Basements. Literally, this tower contains 97 floors, but of course the basement, G, M floors dont count.

YEs, Bert that is what I meant in my post. I was looking for the old render board for the tower and couldve swore it says 83F, which was changed to 88F.

My assumption is that the original tower was 88F with out enough parking spaces. Then, the compoany decided to increase the minimum quota for parking spaces, which therefore allowed an increase of 7 more floors to 90F total. Perhaps, the extra basement level is the new additional parking spaces? But, a tower like this should by all means contain a separate parking tower.

Wow, its rather suprising they are willing to leasehold the apartments for 99 years! I thought that area didnt get the apprival yet for those kinds of deals.

I drove past today and they seem to be pumping in concrete for the pilings, as I spotted the old ReadyMix pump arm extended ... slow progress, but at least some progress ...

Yah, there was about a dozen of workers when i took the pic with my cell phone camera.

Even though this is a tall tower and deserves some impoirtance, I dont think it deserves a sticky though.

Yeah Thanks MellianiaL for the pics! Damn the tower looks mighty fine! But, from the newspaper advertisement it says that the tower is only 84 stories high, not 90F as stated in the sign! Take about constant consistency here!

yeah about that i dont think this tower is going to be completed any time soon :( hopefully by 2011 since it hard to connsider the finishing date to be 2010 doha is always late in construction :D

This tower looks excellent, and will definetly be the largest in Doha and Qatar after completion!

it is massive....but whatever happened to Doha Tower and Convention Center....?

A couple of things I have noticed.

1. Around the hoardings there is a new project board that will show the tower, I'd guess they might have some sort of level progress chart on this?!

2. There are 4 big cranes on the site now so I'd guess that with that amount of heavy lifting kit we should see this start to peek over the basement level soon.

About 2-3 other proposed supertalls in Doha may surpass the Dubai Towers sometime in the 2010s.

Can't wait, the design is exciting compared with some of the other Towers in town, and now there are a few cranes there so lets hope we see some action now the foundations are FINALLY in

the latest you can see from the site is that they just recently put up a couple of cranes, so I guess we shall soon see this one go up

the great thing about this tower is that it's mixed use. Mixed use complexes make areas more integrated and vibrant. Hope to see more of these types sprouting in Doha.

the Burj dubai is 649m tall, i guess you mean the Dubai Towers :D

The columns rise to the second floor but the building as a whole or podium is on ground level.

Actually you can see daily progress on the surrounding structure, it's going very fast! (the one with the blue glass on). The amount of concrete in that core is really something, you see these concrete trucks day and night at site these days!

Actualy the glass is only a mock-up wall. It gives the genreal impresion of how the glass will be lifted, transported, and overall look in the project. They will certinly not start the glass right now.

Interestingly though, Sama Dubai the developer behind this tower cancelled a project in Bahrain and reported big debt; wonder how it will impact the progress in this tower?

I heard sama are in deep doo doo particularly in Dubai. I sincerely hope they finish this. I heard they were gonna concentrate on two or three projects, this one being their main focus. Sadly though due to this uncertainty I would not buy into this project.

Actually I think this is one of the few Sama Dubai projects that is going ahead at the moment. The 'Dubai Towers' series of towers are all postponed, whereas work stopped on their Bahrain resort project...

dubai has be hit badly by the global financial crisis.. real estaters need money to play with and unfortunatley banks have stopped financing ...

Even if Sama is bankrupt, someone else will take on the project, although for Doha's sake, I hope it won't be Dubai Properties.

By the way I heard a rumour that Sama have let go more than half of its legal team, which doesn't sound like a good move. I would have thought those were the people who would be most needed around now.

I dont think Sama Dubai will let go of this project since it is already well advanced in its progress. After all, it probably secured its financial aspects of this construction project--so there is no need to halt progress. Im sure Barwa will not hesistate to take control of the project if Sama Dubai decides not to complete it.

Habibi.. I believe the Salam Resort in Bahrain already reached 3rd and 4th floor in some parts of the structure.. And they still 'abandoned' it... So u never no... Its annoying.. Crazy..

But thank god in Bahrain, at least, we have minimal dubai involvement/investment.. The salam resort might have been the only project.. Although its sad if nobody takes it up.. As its huge, in the vicinity of the f1 circuit.. and Was even planned to host the 2010 Bahrain GCC Summit..
