"Nothing Special...There are thousands of characterless cities like Montreal in the world."

Montreal has tons of character. I love Montreal. Canadian cities have decent skylines. I would say that Montreal is Canada's second best after Toronto. I prefer American skylines only because the skyscrapers are more iconic and varied and historic. The Chrysler, Empire State, Woolworth, Tribune Tower, PSFS, and Terminal Tower in Cleveland are all decent examples about what I am talking about. Many of our cities had big skylines even in the 1930's.

I would rate Montreal as an 8 in terms of skyline.

Canada does not have many old skyscrapers.

Skycraper is a very controversial subject here in Montreal ,as it has been said before ,there are many factors to prevent Montreal from becoming a skyscraper City , this is as good as it gets , the last foto was taken from last year so that it is missing one highrise from the blue crane there , maybe in a couple of years from now we'll have a few more highrises in there ,but they won't be more than fourty stories high , eventhough there is not that much skyscrapers in the City ,but Montreal is one of the most exciting Cities to visist ,you just have to come and experience it youself

I'm glad. I think old skyscrapers are tacky.

But we do have our (unfair) share of 60s/70s brutalist jobs.

Montreal is a fantastic city!! I was there recently for the Jazz festival and had the best holiday I have ever had in my life. The architecture was great, especially around the Old Port area. I must admit the skyscrapers aren't the most iconic but the whole city has a certain charm about it.

Everyone I come across were extremely friendly, excellent customer service and excellent food and drink. The Jazz festival was very well organised and all in all I loved it!! I would love to come back next year for the 30th anniversary of the Jazz festival and would also love to go skiing.

9/10 for the skyline although 10/10 for the city!

I think the skyline i is the most sophisticated in the country. The Restraints give it a mature look and I love the variety of architectural styles. If there were no restrictions, keep in mind Montreal would probably at least have an iconic 60's supertall. However if there was no FLQ crisis and language tensions the city would probably have lost significantly more of its historic buildings and Montreal would be less unique despite being Canada's major city today.

Totally agree. Montreals USP is the fact of its difference, its frenchness linguistically, its charm and sophistication. Otherwise it is another big Nth. American city.

As it is it is a fantastic cultural mix.

I love Montreal. It is truly a beauty of its own and a one of the most vibrant cities I have ever known. Badly represented in this forum, though. I guess many of the forumers that are from this city have left for some reason.

For the people that have said comments about Montreal being dull and crummy, I guess you do not know the city very well or you have not been there at all. Maybe it does not have the best skyline right now (it seems that is picking up along with the economy though)

But to say that the fashion, aeronautical, entertainment (maybe this part is being shared with Toronto), and nightlife (BY FAR) capital of Canada is DULL AND CRUMMY?????

SHAME ON YOU :ohno:

Remember guys, you can't judge a city by the size of its skyline. But again, this is a skyline rating thread. I will give the Montreal skyline 8/10, the city 10/10.

PD: How is the economy of the city?, the last time I went there, it seems that there are a lot of new projects coming up. I wish that the feelings about Quebecois separation are gone. Quebec is a big part of what make this beautiful country of Canada unique.

Montreal is too complex and amazing to be measured by the size of its skyline alone. Its true vitality can only be measured at street-level. It is probably the most historically, culturally, and architecturally textured city in Canada, akin to Boston, USA in many respects. That said, the skyline still deserves a 7 or 8/10.

Some skyline shots of downtown from the south and southwest would be nice. We always seem to get that traditional shot from Mont Royal, and from the southeast. What about a few blocks south of Place Bonaventure? Are there good vantage points or buildings to take shots of downtown from there?

I moved there after university and loved every minute. Montreal's a very cool place, with a fantastic design sensibility, and wonderful food. This was Canada's first true metropolis in every sense of the word. Toronto followed next, then Vancouver. After decades of very slow growth, it's good to see things finally picking up again in Montreal. I'd love to see what Montreal will look like at 5 million.

That's what I was thinking as well. Maybe right downtown, Vancouver feels denser as there are very few vacant lots left, but that can be a little deceiving. Besides, Montreal is definitely denser beyond the core. With some exceptions here and there, Montreal is 2-4 floor tightly packed row houses for miles in every direction.

Montreal is my favorite city. Tough it hasn't got the biggest skyline, I still find it original and sophisticated. It diverse architectural style, density, lightning at night, well planning and what surround it (mountain (hill) and river) makes it my favorite on earth. I also love how old and new architecture contrast. You have to visit it in person to truly appreciate it. Also the city is much better than the skyline. I'll give it a 10/10.

I wish that Montreal had just a couple (or heck even just one) skyscraper that instantly stood out from the rest in terms of its height, design and quality. Based on where it is located, that alone could make it one of the most well balanced skyline in all of North America.

Unfortunately due to height restrictions, the tallest building you see now, will be the tallest you'll ever get.

FFJ-MTL
September 15th, 2009, 02:33 AM
^^ I know that it could be hard to get a supertall, but yet, it is still possible. Montreal was going to have a lot of (I just can remember 3) supertalls despite the height restrictions. At first, there were plans to build a 325 tower for expo 67, but then it didn't get built because they were runnig out of time. Then, in the late 1980's there was a develloper that wanted to build a 80 storey office tower on plot used as a restaurant, all was ok except that the person didn't wanted to sell it. The develloper even gave him 15 times the value of the plot, but he kept on refusing. And in the early 1990's, a develloper wanted to build a ~72 story office tower, and it was approved, but at the moment he was going to build it, the economy downturn made him reduce it height to 47 storey.
So it could be possible to have a supertall in Montreal, but I agree that it would be hard.

Wouldn't that be something if Montreal was the first city in Canada to build a supertall.

I'd definitely enjoy some taller buildings, but I don't think I'd care for a supertall. The current tallest (not counting antennas) is only 205m. A 300m+ building would be 50% taller. Not a very balanced or proportionate skyline.

My French is atrocious, but miraculously got what you were saying. I agree! Montréal just needs one or two strategically placed taller towers and it would immediately be one of the best skylines in America.

Montreal was Canada's premier city for a very long time. It was only bypassed by Toronto in population about 30 years ago. Naturally, the city's buildings reflect Montreal's once dominant position. The first Canadian skyscrapers were built in both Montreal and Toronto around the same time (1880-1900), but Toronto started building significantly taller than Montreal from 1970 onwards.

In 1962, Montreal had taller buildings than Chicago if you can believe it.

When I was in MTL is July, although I found the skyline attractive from a few angles, for the most part, I find both its size and aesthetics weak for a metro area pushing 4 million. The city overall is wonderful - especially the inner city neighbourhoods and old Montreal. The Modern downtown wasn't particularly large, attractive or impressive, but it was quite busy and so was obviously doing its job.

From a strictly skyline standpoint, when I compare it to leading skyline cities in the same size range such as Melbourne, Seattle, Dallas, or even Minneapolis, the skyline could definitely be better. Sure, the height restriction is partially to blame, but with a fairly small number of 500+ft buildings, the restriction is not the main reason.

isaidso
November 23rd, 2010, 11:58 PM
Montreal's skyline is about average for a city its size. Melbourne, Seattle, and Minneapolis are about the same size and have more impressive skylines. Boston, Detroit, and Phoenix are about the same size and have less impressive skylines. (Dallas is about 60% larger than Montreal.)

Overall, I like the Montreal skyline and it mirrors the size of the city. That said, if you're looking for tall buildings, Montreal is not the city to go looking for that. It's also a city just emerging from 30 years of relative stagnation so the place could do with some sprucing up. There are still far too many buildings that suffer from neglect.

A few more 200 m towers would certainly do the city's skyline wonders though.

Nouvellecosse
November 24th, 2010, 12:06 AM
That's true overall, but I disagree about Boston. it has a skyline with 16 buildings of about 500 ft or higher with a tallest of 241m, whereas Montreal has a tallest of 205m (if not counting spires) and 7 buildings of 500ft or more. Aesthetics are subjective of course, but on a purely size basis, Boston is among the most impressive in NA.

LOL ... Montreal may not have any supertalls but it certainly has a lot of "towers".

Very good skyline. However, from my own standpoint, Calgary has surpassed it by now. Obviously in terms of the streetscape Montreal is still the top city but the skyline has been stagnant for a while. Just one more 200m+ skyscraper could change my opinion drastically though.

7/10.

Montreal in fact is 3rd in North America in terms of construction sites with more than 350 i believe...Just most of these projects are less than 15 floors. The regulations and policies of highrise construction have really hurt Montreal in terms of good skyline density. For a city that's almost about to hit 4 million, it deserves better. Nonetheless, there are 4 highrises with 30+ floors under construction right now that will definitely alter the view from different POV

Montreal's one of my favourite places on earth, but you're right about the skyline. The skyline hasn't changed much since the 1970s.Well it has gotten 3 of its 10 tallest buildings since the 70s, but you're right. Compared to TO, Calgary, and Van, the skyline is pretty much the same.

But of course, the biggest difference between Van and TO are that Montreal has never built a large volume of highrise residential buildings - at least larger ones. I suspect this is largely because at ground level, TO and Van are mainly dominated by detached and semi-detached houses, so the only practical way to provide a large amount of apartment/condo accommodation is through highrises. Montreal, on the other hand, has a built form largely dominated by lowrise apartment buildings. So there's no need to have a large number of residential highrises poking up like it would if it was dominated by lower density housing.

Calgary, of course, is just a bit of an anomaly with its large scale office construction. It even makes Toronto look a bit lackluster considering Calgary has about 3/5 as many large office buildings with about 1/5 the population.

koolio
July 29th, 2011, 04:57 AM
Also the fact that for a country of relatively small population like Canada, you just cannot have multiple centres of commerce of equal stature. There just isn't economic activity to justify that ... especially considering that Montreal and Toronto are fairly close-by within the Canadian context.

Either way, from what I gather, Montreal and the surrounding region still has a fairly strong manufacturing base, which is something that does not show on the downtown skyline as most of the development there is carried out because of the agglomeration of banks, investment firms, advertising agencies, law firms etc. It takes decades for cities to recover from a complete shift in their economy and Montreal has not done poorly in that respect.

As a Montrealer of 20 years, but an Ontarian by birth, it's hard to really compare with any other city. We cannot be Toronto: it is so much newer: with our "decline" in the '80s giving birth to Toronto's ascent. We can't be London which dates back 2,000 years. We need to stand on our own history and cultural development has a lot to do with why the skyline may pale compared to other cities. A couple of reasons why we will never have those mega tall buildings:
1- Mont-Royal is a Unesco heritage site and no building can block a view of it...some have mentioned this I know! :) That being said, Mount Royal Park was designed by the same gentleman who did Central Park.
2- We have so many 100, 200, 300+ year old buildings we prefer to preserve and restore to enrich our unique French and English historic architectural heritage in North America rather than tear them down to accommodate new taller buildings
3- we are an island: there is only so much we can do because of what I mentioned just above - we feel we are "dense" enough and as others noted: you must appreciate Montreal at street level. The "Paris of North America" with more restaurants/bars/clubs per capita than NY, our skyline may be lacking for some, but the vibe, hum and energy of this vibrant, sexy city more than make up for a typical big city skyline. Grab a great steak or smoked meat at 4 am after dancing your feet off and you'll know what I mean. We are chic but not pretentious, always up for a party or festival, liberal and open...size isn't everything boys! Hope I'm not too off topic! :)

montreal's skyline is interesting and peculiar in that it looks very boxy but still with good taste.

Melbourne and Montreal should be sister cities.
