M O N T R E A L
Canada has truly a wonderful city, a bit of European and North American style in it, which makes the city so beautiful but Montreal needs a make-over...I have said this before in my other threads LOL really though it needs another taller skyscraper! taller than the current one..it has been over 11 years now Montreal hasn't built a skyscraper over 200m!! thats nuts really I mean million a year visit the city and to up the Mont-Royal mountain to look at the skyline...so why not show them something different? something new? ....anyway I think it's time for another tall skyscraper! what do u think? please tell me......

DaninTO January 3rd, 2003, 08:49 PM Beutiful skyline. Nice mixture of different styles of architecture. 10/10
Rainier Meadows January 3rd, 2003, 09:49 PM Excellent balance between boxy and pointed structures - nice mid-size density in there as well!
8.5/10
SteelCity32 January 3rd, 2003, 11:19 PM Looks even better at night. I never montreal had that good of a skyline.
7.5/10
SUNNI January 4th, 2003, 02:30 PM it looks pretty kool, but more taller buildings would be nice..
Jeff from Winnipeg January 5th, 2003, 08:20 AM Tour IBM-One of favourite in Canada, nice diversity of structures... needs some more height, tho and maybe a little more density. Still, one of my Canadian favs! ->8/10
parody24 January 5th, 2003, 08:59 AM I love Montreal, one of the greatest cities in the world.
The skyline has superb density. The height is moderate,
decent, but not spectacular. Some nice designs. I love the
old town section. The skyline scores a 7.5/10.
tayser January 5th, 2003, 09:08 AM can't wait to eventually go there and gawk at the skyline from Mont-Royal!

MeReK January 21st, 2003, 10:05 AM Nothing Special...There are thousands of characterless cities like Montreal in the world.
ganjavih January 22nd, 2003, 02:53 AM It's one thing to criticise Montreal's skyline but to call Montreal "characterless" is beyond ridiculous.
SeeMacau January 23rd, 2003, 01:54 AM Montreal looks beautiful at night
9/10
mookiecece January 23rd, 2003, 02:43 AM awesome!!! 8.5/10, I think it looks better than toronto's
SD February 4th, 2003, 11:21 PM Montreal is a beautiful city. However, I've always found the skyline to be lacking.
7/10
schmidt February 13th, 2003, 02:07 PM Montreal reminds me Rio de Janeiro a lot hahaha (and both cities dont have anything to do with each other)
7.5 is enough for this skyline :)
SD February 15th, 2003, 10:12 AM 7/10
Montreal is a beautiful city...but I've never really been impressed with the skyline. Kind of boring.
coldstar February 26th, 2003, 10:33 PM my most favorite in NA.
10/10 definitely
Stoxx April 6th, 2003, 10:41 PM Montreal's skyline is one of the greatest but maybe too windy between those buildings:D
Ashram April 13th, 2003, 10:27 AM 7/10 I lived in Montreal for along time, and have family that lives there. It's got a great skyline, with alot of nice modern midrises being built. It would be nice to see some new skyscrapers though, and it would be real nice to see a skyscraper built over 800 ft.
BGT April 16th, 2003, 03:20 AM 8.5/10

Peja43 October 2nd, 2003, 04:29 AM 9.5, my favorite in Canada. And let's see those jealous idiots who voted three or less.
leealex_24 November 17th, 2003, 03:02 PM I think Montreal looks more massive than Toronto. The buildings etc. The skyline is fabulous too, buildings sprouting everywhere, very very dense. City lighted up so brightly at night. 9/10
johnrosstaiwan December 6th, 2003, 07:37 PM 3/10 Boring and outdated.Nothing spectacular.
bohemian|senses April 3rd, 2004, 01:26 PM Oh Montreal la belle!!! Great city, great buildings, great skyline! Canada is rich with some of the most amazing cities in the world, this is one of them...a magnificent treat! 10/10

AJphx May 29th, 2004, 04:43 AM amazing! I would give it 10/10 if voting was still allowed.
I can't believe how many assholes there are on this forum that gave Montreal a 3 or lower. Too bad this poll wasn't public so we could see who they were.
MG2 July 15th, 2004, 06:46 PM Best Canadian city by far in my opinion. Someone said in another thread that my city looks more like Montreal than Toronto. I am glad to say that I firmly agree! In fact, I am proud to have my city compared with this beauty! 9/10! With a few talls in there it will get full marks! Can't wait to visit :D
MG2
Ashok July 18th, 2004, 11:44 PM IMO, it is one of the best cities in the world.. 10/10
elliot August 18th, 2004, 12:18 AM God I hope those renderings were from a thread called "suburban nightmare architecture, how can we stop it/". Truly horrible and dated.
usernames suck August 19th, 2004, 11:39 PM 8 out of ten, gets a lot of points for old montreal and the european feel. Definitely the most unique to N.A.

Wallbanger April 1st, 2005, 03:03 AM 8. The city looks like an Industrial Powerhouse, which makes it look polluted in some pics.
mikep April 7th, 2005, 06:30 PM been there and its an amazing city, great setting, great buildings, very nice skyline
9/10
TORONTOCOPENHAGEN April 23rd, 2005, 01:59 PM I've been there, and I love the city. But in order to get more than 8 it needs higher buildings and more density. Therefore: 8.
100% canadian May 5th, 2005, 01:58 AM beautiful city, another great one for canada!

I'm a big fan of the city, and the skyline I have to say looks really great, the view from Mont Royal is so beautiful, I'm sure they had sightseeing in mind when building the skyline in front of the hill :P

Nouvellecosse July 29th, 2005, 02:28 PM The skylne is attractive, but it seems a bit small for a metro of this size. I also think the rule preventing buildings from being higher than Mt.Royal is silly. If 1000 Rue de la Gauchiere had been 275m instead of 205m, and there were a few buildings in the 220-260 range, the skyline would look more appropriate and attractive, though it is still one of my favs.
lesterZ July 30th, 2005, 09:45 PM Hey man, these links still aren't working. Anyways, is it true that in Montreal there is a breakfast cafe where the waitresses are topless? Also, does it have a subway system?

TORONTOCOPENHAGEN September 15th, 2005, 12:23 PM It is nice, but still only third in Canada after Toronto and Vancouver. I'll give it 7.5.
Elite September 15th, 2005, 03:16 PM It looks like a really nice place 7/10
Jaybird September 17th, 2005, 08:15 AM There is one building in that city I really hate that Marriott hotel tower with those hemisphere-shaped windows. That's freaking ugly. I'll give the skyline a 6/10.

Montreal is a whatever city, not much of a surprising thing, but otherwise, Montéal is a beautiful city to be in. I cannot imagine how Montreal can be very old but it looks amazing, judging the fact that the city has a lot of cracked roads on it, and way too many one way streets. Otherwise, Montréal is a good tour and to live as well. 8/10.

Quall February 16th, 2006, 10:53 PM Montreal is a beyond beautiful... although the skyline looks kinda old, I found that, when I was there, the skyline looked somewhat interesting and modern, and looked monstrously tall once I was downtown... 10/10
Godot February 17th, 2006, 12:17 AM are there any projects coming down the pipes to add some new highrises to montreal?
Blue Swede February 22nd, 2006, 11:56 AM Montréal looks good at night because the civic lighting is warmer (more yellow) like Paris, not like Toronto or most other North American cities. The reason there aren't no taller skyscrapers is that the city has a long-standing law that forbids any building being taller than Mount Royal (223m above sea level). But Place Ville Marie was the tallest building in Canada for some time and still has a great majesty to it. I don't much care for the tallest, 1000 de la Gauchetière, something of a postmodern phallic failure.
But I gave Montréal a high rating because this is about "skyline" not skyscrapers and the mountain adds something enchanting and harmonious, especially in autumn and winter.
oli4 February 22nd, 2006, 04:28 PM 10/10 beautiful skyline

ltsowiak March 16th, 2006, 05:53 AM I agree that Montreal is in need of something new. It is just getting a little old, and needs something to help it compete with Toronto - who is basically leaving it in its dust. Maybe it's because several large companies have left Montreal for other cities, like Calgary, thus not necesitating more major building construction. I look forward to visiting this wonderful city someday.
WELLLLL here is my personal favorite!

elkram April 3rd, 2006, 11:10 PM 6/10 -- still a lot of holes or parking lots downtown here that could do with being filled in, although it generally has far fewer holes than other Cdn cities do.
Oh, and London would DEFINATELY beat Montreal if they were in a city vs city, which means not just comparing the skyline. IF there was any justice, of course.
That's a tall order to compare this city to the world's most cosmopolitan one....London's one urban community that's virtually impossible to outmatch in so many aspects....
There is one building in that city I really hate that Marriott hotel tower with those hemisphere-shaped windows. That's freaking ugly. I'll give the skyline a 6/10.
The cheese grater! Ever been inside it? It's so 1960s, a novel-looking building both on the outside and inside -- its kitschness is what makes me think it's okay a building.
Cheers,
Chris

Boschdijk April 15th, 2006, 08:21 PM Ah Montréal. During a tour of Eastern Canada it was my first stop. I really like the city. It has a nice mix of old buildings and new buildings. Too bad that major companies and offices have left the city. The city does need an upgrade though. There are way to many open parking spaces which need a skyscraper to be built on.

monkeyronin May 19th, 2006, 12:55 AM great city, average skyline. It could use 1 or 2 250 to 300+ m buildings, although not too many highrises. just enough to kinda fill out the skyline, as too many would take away from Montreal's more European atmosphere. the problem though, is that under current laws, buildings can't surpass the height of Mount Royal (223m).
awesome street scene

tigerboy April 11th, 2007, 10:37 PM It lacks a stand out signature tall such as Toronto has but in a way that adds to the skyline because it appears organic and together without one huge eyecatcher grabbing the attention. Also with the Mont Real as a viewing platform it benefits from location.
It's great plus is its density adn it's "real city" not "showcase" character.

jetmty1 August 3rd, 2007, 11:33 AM Just came from Montreal and Toronto las t week and how come in TO there is a skyscraper being raised in every corner and Montreal besides nothing. there are the same buildings as a decade ago.....
PS I love both cities but the difference in population is not that much as the difference in construction.
isaidso August 3rd, 2007, 12:56 PM The answer lies not so much in population, but in growth. There is more demand for new commercial and residential buildings in Toronto.
Population growth in Toronto is much higher than it is in Montreal. Over 100,000 immigrants arrive in Toronto every year. Substantially fewer arrive in Montreal. Toronto is typically a larger magnet for Canadian migrants also. Many choose to live downtown and there has been a massive condo tower boom in the city to accomodate the influx.
Toronto is also the business capital of Canada. As a result, there is far greater demand for new office space in Toronto than there is in Montreal.
Both cities are growing, but Toronto is growing significantly faster.

NEWWORLD January 7th, 2008, 08:52 AM great looking city, nice pics!
Lucky_star January 19th, 2008, 06:25 PM its very grey and ugly i think!
isaidso February 23rd, 2008, 01:46 AM Beauty is subjective, but I've rarely come across someone who finds Montreal physically unattractive. I suppose some people find London ugly too. There are no palms trees or blue lagoons, but old can be very beautiful. Montreal has more than it's fair share of grand buildings, but innumerable well designed modern structures also. The river/mountain setting is the icing on the cake.
timmy- brissy February 23rd, 2008, 01:52 AM do they speak french cos if they do then im not goin there and london is a marvalous city compared to montreal but i prefer vancouver, edmunton an calgarry compared to montreal .but the skyline is a 8.5.
isaidso February 23rd, 2008, 02:14 AM French is the working language of the city. Signs are in French, businesses conduct themselves in French, and government services are in French. Most people can speak English as a second language, and a sizable English speaking minority still exists in the city.
Timmy-brissy:
You are correct that London is fantastic, but Montreal won't disappoint you. Montreal is much smaller than London, but very much it's own special place. There is so much history and old money in Montreal. It is often quoted that the residents of Montreal's historic 'golden mile' once controlled one-sixth of the North American economy. This is the heart of French America or New France and where the power once rested in the New World.
2006 census was 3,635,000
timmy- brissy February 23rd, 2008, 06:26 PM Erm i dont like history never have and never will.
isaidso February 25th, 2008, 11:15 AM You are just interested in the present and then it's forced from your memory? That must get tiring. How do you make sense of anything that exists? Um. Never mind.

Montreal doesn't fit easily into websites like this. It's not really a skyline kind of town. One has to experience the city at street-level to truly appreciate its unique culture, energy, and beauty.
That said, for a city of almost 4million, it ought to have a bigger skyline, though not necessarily a taller one. It needs many more new, prominent, and achitecturally-compelling buildings to balance out the (rather mediocre) towers from the 60s to early-90s.

Well said Elkhanan1. Montréal is best experienced at street level - it blows most cities out of the water for urbanity and street vitality. Not to mention the sexy people everywhere...

Absolutely correct. The girls in Montreal are amazing. Maybe I was lucky to see it in sunny weather when the athmosphere was good and the people were out but the girls were gorgeous.....the city is not gorgeous as xuch but is a real urban, concentrated, vibrant place which is in no way grey or dull. It is a great town from my admittedly limited experience.

I've been to Montreal once when I was a little kid, and I was impressed by it. It's definitely a nice skyline, but it looks more spaced out than it is in reality. I don't mind some of the PoMo towers either (*hides*).
skyboi May 9th, 2008, 08:36 AM If anyone come to Montreal, come to enjoy the City itself rather than to expect the exuberance of skylines or stunning architecture of the twenty first century there is non and will not have as people seems to like it this way here in Montreal ,but there is something special about this City that will make you wanna come back for more as some one said ,even bums are sexy ...cheers :)

Streuth May 13th, 2008, 02:05 AM Montreal is a fantastic city. The skyline is nice but there is so much more to Montreal than the skyline. That is true for most cities, but I really like Montreal.
