ramblersen February 28th, 2011, 12:23 PM And another hed-to-head duel among Danish architects in the International competition for a new National Concert Hall in Dublin, Ireland, only two finalists are now left:
3XN vs. Henning Larsen Architects
But in Ireland of all places, I wonder what the chances are that it gets build.;)
Dublin Concert Hall - A Danish Tie
Two Danish Studios Head-to-Head for the Design of the New National Concert Hall Dublin
3XN is one of two finalists in the prestigious competition to design Dublin’s new National Concert Hall. The competition was initiated in 2008 and the shortlist of renowned architects was soon narrowed down to two competing teams lead by Danish Architects; 3XN and Henning Larsen Architects. It is quite unique that two Danish studios come head to head in the final round of an international competition of this scope. Both teams have delivered spectacular designs for a world class concert hall to meet the client’s high ambitions for the project. Unfortunately the competition has now been cancelled due to lack of financing as a result of Ireland’s fragile economic situation and the client will not appoint a final winner.
3XNs proposal for the Dublin National Concert Hall is a sculptural showcase which creates a magnificent new home for music, while also providing a framework for the historical context upon which the new concert hall sits. The new building provides a zone where the urban and park settings come together expressing their own symphony in addition to the music coming from within.
Dublin National Concert Hall is composed of three sculptural volumes, each of which contains its own unique Concert Hall. The three Halls are linked at the Grand Entrance through the historic Butler building and via a plinth; with the organic foyer promoting flow and social interaction between the three Halls. As amongst buildings in a city, the foyer flows between the Halls like small lively streets that contract and expand to meet the demands of the new structure. From the grand main entrance at Earlsfort Terrace through the floating foyers and down into the historic Iveagh Gardens, the city’s urban environment quite distinctly meets and transitions into the park. From the garden side, a transparent façade cascades down from the three Concert Hall volumes drawing the gardens forth into the foyer and extending into a new public plaza towards Hatch Street.
Acoustically, Dublin Concert Hall was planned to be amongst the top Concert Halls in the world. Working with the leaders in acoustics (Larry Kierkegaard from Chicago), stage design (Charcoal Blue from London) and lighting (Steven Scott from Denmark), 3XN has aimed to surpass the expectations. The programming is such that the three Halls complement each other in size, function and acoustic objectives. Hall 1 is designed to be reminiscent of the fine lines and interior of a fine classical wooden instrument; providing a warm intimacy between musicians and patrons. Hall 2 should be restored to its original glory with its classic layout and respect for tradition. Hall 3 is designed to be the most flexible and multi-functional of the three Halls.
And some renderings of 3XN's proposal:

Yeah I just saw a notice on 3XN and found a link in English without actually having the time to read it. Fortunately not all projects die along the way. Schmidt hammer lassen's City of Westminster College has just opened earlier this year, their first project to be completed in the UK. The Learning Zone – Library and Learning Centre in Sheffield and University of Aberdeen New Library will follow later in 2011.
Schmidt Hammer Lassen’s New City of Westminster College Opened
The new City of Westminster College in London which opened to students on January 10, 2011 is the first completed building by Danish schmidt hammer lassen architects in the UK, soon to be followed by The Learning Zone – Library and Learning Centre in Sheffield and the University of Aberdeen New Library in Scotland both to be completed in 2011.
The 24,000m2 College, won in a competition in 2006, provides much greater amounts of open learning spaces than typical colleges in the UK and holds state-of-the-art facilities for both students and staff. The building is designed to embrace interaction and diversity and allow students to learn from each other, both formally and informally.

“The learning spaces of City of Westminster College are adaptable and flexible so that, in addition to the integrated technology, the students’ development is supported by the diverse architectural spaces of the very building they are in. It is a design which encourages new ways of teaching and learning,” says Founding Partner of schmidt hammer lassen architects, Mr Morten Schmidt.
http://www.bustler.net/images/news2/city_of_westminster_college-schmidt_hammer_lassen_02.jpg
The College is located in the heart of Central London at Paddington Green on the site of its previous building, an inefficient and failing 1960s block. The building has been designed from the inside-out, responding to the needs of the diverse groups who use the College, as well as taking into account the sensitive local context. It appears as a clean-cut, modern building with a distinct Scandinavian heritage. The building’s simple geometric forms rotate around a terraced atrium, creating a unifying yet flexible organisation.
http://www.bustler.net/images/news2/city_of_westminster_college-schmidt_hammer_lassen_03.jpg
“The respective floor plans surrounding the atrium have visual connections from one floor to the other, making the atrium a dynamic centre and the heart of the College,” says Partner at schmidt hammer lassen architects Mr Kim Holst Jensen, and he continues: “The large atrium, which on some floors extends all the way to the façade, enhances the relationship between the inside and the outside. It offers light-filled, open and inclusive spaces which encourage the interaction between students.”
http://www.bustler.net/images/news2/city_of_westminster_college-schmidt_hammer_lassen_05.jpg
To support connectivity with the local community, most public functions – including an exhibition area, a theatre and a café – are located adjacent to the main entrance before the security turnstiles. The choice of colours for the building is inspired by its context and by the change of the seasons, whilst the light timber panels lining the interior form a contrast to the exposed concrete surfaces and underline the Scandinavian design heritage.
The building is designed to be sustainable and energy efficient and the overall scheme will have a low maintenance liability, significantly reducing the building’s lifespan costs and carbon footprint.
http://www.bustler.net/images/news2/city_of_westminster_college-schmidt_hammer_lassen_05.jpg
College Principal Keith Cowell says: “We wanted to create a new Campus with an open and inclusive atmosphere – a space that would match the needs of our diverse group of students. We're delighted with the outcome, and proud to be able to welcome people to such a contemporary and inspiring learning environment."

I don't think these processes are very open. It's a commisioned assignment, which the city will own till it's finished. I tried searching trough the New York City Department of Transportation webpages (which I guess you've done too), and it's evident that nothing new has been published since the press releases last summer (first concerning the temporary installements, then the permanent ones). Since construction is not expected to start until 2012, I guess we have to quite a while untill we see anything public about this design, maybe around new year.

ramblersen June 1st, 2011, 01:26 PM Copenhagen/Brussels-based Julien de Smedt has won a competition in China - with a clone of Bjarke Ingels Group's TEK cube in Taipei.
Julien De Smedt Architects (JDS) has won first prize in the design competition for the ‘hangzhou gateway’ in the gongshu district of china. The 15 storey tower aims to stand as a new icon for the urban transformation of the old industrial neighbourhood. The design draws in the energy of the street by providing a wide, featured a sunken in plaza and shopping center. Arcade-like passage way that connects one side of the site to the other. Commercial opportunities at this level opens up to the plaza, creating a lively space for social exchange. The top portion of the volume features a similarly carved out profile which creates a multi-tiered green terrace on the roof. The building benefits from natural sunlight intake as well as unobstructed sight lines towards the city.
