View Full Version : N&B Designed projects outside our Region
mlm March 9th, 2005, 12:51 AM I though it would be cool to have a thread where we could present projects from "our" architects, that are planned for places outside S&B. Please only post projects that have won competetions, or if they we're designed for a specific project (= they will probably be build)

Jarmo K March 9th, 2005, 11:59 AM nice job by the danish architects! (i agree, the hospital would look cooler if it were in copenhagen..:D)
i don't know if estonian architects have done anything outside our region (or outside estonia)... but i'm looking forward to see the finns' work ;)

Hviid March 9th, 2005, 03:21 PM Im not sure but i think mlm was talking about projects that havent already been done ... only planned ....
If not...
Here's the Sydney Opera House (in Australia of course), designed by danish architecture Jorn Ultzon, build 1957-1973
http://data.greatbuildings.com/gbc/images/cid_sydney_002.jpg
Why couldnt they have built an opera house like this in Copenhagen? I like the interior of the one we have now, but the exterior is very boxy and square :(
Moolio March 9th, 2005, 03:25 PM The Sydney opera house is one of the most amazing (not exaggerating) buildings in the world, and Jorn Utzon is one of my all-time fave architects. I believe Eero Saarinen was a co-architect in the planning of the building.

Bell Laboratories, the CBS Building in NYC & MIT Auditorium and Chapel.
_keen_ March 9th, 2005, 04:29 PM Kennedy AirPort , Sydney Opera House, St. Louis Arch ? <- Very prestige buildings !
Amazing, i had no idea there are/were so many great architects in Scandinavia... :applause:

designwise March 9th, 2005, 04:39 PM you didnt know Saarinen? ;) :nono:
Yeah everyone who follows architecture has heard of Saarinen. Even normal joe's in the States have heard of him. In the "Men In Black" movie the MIB HQ was designed with Saarinen's chairs etc.
designwise March 9th, 2005, 04:44 PM The most famous architects in this region come undoubtedly from Finland & Denmark.
mlm March 9th, 2005, 04:47 PM Okay, I change the rules a bit. If you read my fist post you would notice that is was for planned highrises only, but let just keep going with all kinds of buildings.
La Grande Arch, Paris (or a suburb)
Competition won by Danish Otto von Spreckelsen. Von Spreckelsen backed out of the project before its completion, reportedly disheartened by red tape and having grown displeased with his own design. He died before its completion.

NorthStar77 March 9th, 2005, 05:05 PM Don't know of any norwegians that have designed any highrises outside our country, but maybe Christian knows.
Gatis March 9th, 2005, 07:20 PM Latvian based architect companies have not designed highrises outside Latvia - as far as I know. But architects of Latvian ethnicity have.
One of them - Gunārs Birkerts has worked in US:
Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis
It is already out of use - but it was the first building in world suspended in wires - in order to decrease the pressure on underground vaults under the bank. Built in 1972.

designwise March 9th, 2005, 08:14 PM i really like danish architecture! finnish to but not as much
oi oi oi ! Oh and it's too with two o's. I know I'm such a smart-ass. :D
Moolio March 9th, 2005, 08:20 PM i really like danish architecture! finnish to but not as much
I agree, Danish architecture is more interesting. Personally, I think it is not a question of talent but rather a question ideology; even non-functionalistic Finnish architecture tends to have some very functionalistic qualities, consequently affecting the out-look of the buildings, and usually for the worse. I do, however, admire Eero Saarinen very much. He is, imo, by far the greatest visionary in the history of Finnish architecture.

Þróndeimr April 14th, 2006, 07:35 PM Many great project by S&B architect crew here! And here is some projects from Norwegian architects around the globe!
__________
WTC Cultural Center
Noted Norwegian architect firm Snøhetta (http://www.snoarc.no/) unveiled its design for the Cultural Center to be built at the site of the Sep. 11, 2001 terrorist attack on Manhattan, and their vision met with lavish praise.
"Snøhetta has designed an airy, light and optimistic building. It has become a fine project that supports the whole idea behind my master plan," said chief architect for Ground Zero, Daniel Liebeskind, to Aftenposten. "Snøhetta's architecture shows understanding and great respect for how sensitive an area Ground Zero is," said NY mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The planned cultural center at the World Trade Center site will house a visual arts area devoted to drawing, a visitor's hub and a center focusing on the global struggle for freedom, according to plans unveiled Thursday. The model, a transparent crystalline structure, will act as a prism, capture the shifting daylight and be as easy to see out of as in. The Cultural Center will house the International Freedom Museum, an information center for Ground Zero and an art gallery, The Drawing Center. Groundbreaking for the cultural center is scheduled for 2007 with completion in 2009.
Snøhetta was chosen from 34 applicants and is best known for the Alexandria Library in Egypt, the Norwegian Embassy in Berlin and the soon-to-be-completed New National Opera in Oslo. Police criticized the current plan as leaving the building too vulnerable to bombs carried in vehicles. The tower is now to be set back farther from the street.

Þróndeimr April 14th, 2006, 07:53 PM The Sail@Marina Bay
The Norwegian-American award-winning architect Peter Pran (http://www.peterpran.com/) is taking Singapore city-living to new heights with The Sail@Marina Bay. The design concept for this mixed use residential tower is a sculpture that is created by the hands of nature - Sun, Wind, and Water. The design exemplifies and defines natural forces with the overall composition created as if it were formed by water passing through the site. The result includes two prominent towers and a sculpted base. A "canyon" is formed separating the base from the tower mass and becomes an important urban space that exposes a lush green environment to inhabit.
The Sail consists of two condominium and retail twin towers on 245m and 215m in Singapore's new downtown. Togather these towers has a capacity of 1111 units. 438 one-bedroom units, 418 two-bedroom units, 175 three-bedroom units, 75 four-bedroom units and 5 penthouses, ranging in size from 592 sq ft to 1,356 sq ft. Construction is expected to be completed in 2009.

Finnish architect firm Evata to design the new stadium of Valencia CF football club in Spain
The board of Valencia CF has awarded architectural and consulting group Evata the design of its new stadium of the football club. The stadium will be built in Valencia city center, and it will host 75 000 spectators, thus replacing the current stadium with capacity of 53 000 spectators. The budget of the project will be approximately 250 million euros. In addition, Evata has also negotiated about designing a multipurpose arena, which may be built close to the new stadium.
Valencia CF is one of the top teams of the Spanish League. “Football plays an important role in Spain and Valencia CF is football club with long and succesful history. In addition, the stadium will be build in the city center. Consequently, there will be huge interest to stadium project both in the fields of architecture and sports.”, says Mr. Hannu Helkiö, Director, Sport and Entertainment Venues.
Evata has special expertise and experience on Sports and entertainment venues. Evata’s recent realizations include for example Colorline Arena in Hamburg, Germany and Kazan Arena in Russia, the home of AK Bars, last season Russian champion in ice-hockey. Magnitogorsk Arena in Russia is under construction and multipurpose arena in Malmö, Sweden is under design.
The new Valencia stadium will be designed for multipurpose use, thus allowing the stadium to host all kinds of events, for example concerts. According to Mr. Helkiö, the new stadium project strengthens Evata’s role as top player in the European sport and entertainment venues market.

Urbanus July 18th, 2006, 09:44 AM It is awfully depressing to read this thread and see all the great project from the nordic arcitects - especially the Danish - in other contries, when you compare to the dreadful and boring buildings they can come up with here - under the tyranny of the NIMBYs. :tongue3:
Give 3.000.000.000 DKK to two of our finist architects, and two of the best sites of Copenhagen, and they will give you Operaen and DR-Byen. Nice, but extremely boring!! With no ambitions.
It makes me mad as hell to think about what those fine architects - or others - could have gotten out of such many money, at such great places with free hands!! :mad2: :wallbash:

I have to say I really enjoy the Finland based architecture here, especially Saarinen. What a genius.
Both Saarinen and Utzon (Kim) has drawn a lot of nice scrapers in New York and Chicago over the years too...
At Copenhagen based architect firm BIG's website, there are many fantastic projects - especially in China. Have a look at www.big.dk!

Comanche July 20th, 2006, 12:43 AM Henning Larsen also has a huge project going on in Saudi Arabia. "King Abdullah Financial District". 1,6 km/2.
The masterplan for the King Abdullah Financial District covers an area of 1.6 km2. The district unites the Arabian urban traditions with the modern metropolis giving the Saudi capital Riyadh a characteristic skyline with a new outstanding landmark.
The heart of the district is a transformation of the Arabian wadi, an oasis or riverbed, transversing the area. The district will be very attractive and active, as it will comprise financial institutions, residential and recreational areas, shops, restaurants, hotels and sport facilities.
The district will have 75,000 workplaces and as something unique for Saudi Arabia a monorail will connect the various areas of the district. The most essential buildings are linked by air-conditioned footbridges above street level enabling you to walk to all meetings in the Financial District – quite extraordinary for Riyadh.

Bahrain could become home of the world’s tallest skyscraper if a project by Danish company Henning Larsens Tegnestue A/S gets the go-ahead. Company project director Louis Becker, who was in Riyadh yesterday, is planning to have a meeting about the proposed project with a building contractor in Bahrain later this week. The company’s design for a skyscraper measures 1022 metres - double the Taiwan Taipei 101, which is currently the world’s tallest building at 506 metres.
It was chosen by the Bahrain contractor because of the company’s previous experiences of building in Saudi Arabia, according to a report in the Copenhagen Post.
The company designed both the Foreign Affairs Ministry in 1984 and the Royal Danish Embassy in 1987, in Riyadh.
The project is awaiting approval from His Majesty King Hamad and is expected to be formally announced on May 7, said the report. Mr Becker has reportedly been working on plans for the project for a year.
The project, which would take about seven-and-a-half years to build, would comprise five towers - modelled after the five pillars of Islam. The tallest would reach 1,022m, have 200 storeys and house 30,000 people.

Norwegian A-Lab in United Arab Emirates
Municipal headquarters of Ajman
Six architectural practices pre qualified to participate in the international competition to design the new municipal headquarters of Ajman, which was won by Norwegians A-lab Architects in calibration with Migrant Urban Planners.
The 15000 m2 brief is divided between a high rise building housing the municipality administration, and a single storey public building with reception, exhibition, conference and café facilities grouped around a courtyard. A sail-like curved screen binds the project together, serving to shade both the entrance forecourt area and the sunny side of the building. The space between the screen and the high-rise building is planted to create a 'hanging' garden. The screen itself derives its pattern from traditional Arabic decoration. The facades around the courtyard are 'clad' in screens of flowing water, modulating both the interior and exterior light.

From the Norwegian architect firm Snøhetta (http://www.snoarc.no/) comes the Turner Contemporary, an international centre for the visual arts. Turner Contemporary will provide South East England with a major gallery for the work of contemporary artists together with exhibitions of Turner and his contemporarys.
Located in Margate, comemorating the site where the great artist undertook many of his most famous works, the Turner Contemporary occupies a dramatic position within the maritime landscape of Margate. Build in association with the historic pier, the prominent location and distinct form provides a focal point of reference not just for the whole town but for the visual arts and the works of Turner internationaly.

Þróndeimr September 9th, 2008, 09:08 PM It took a few years, but Snøhetta's final design have been unveiled in NYC today. Snøhetta won the competition for the 9/11 memorial
building in 2004.
The architect Craig Dykers has been working since 2004 on the design of a museum building for the World Trade Center site. In the end, he realized
there could be no more powerful a centerpiece than something Minoru Yamasaki designed 45 years ago.
Though the broad outlines of the design have been known for some time, the unveiling on Tuesday provided and confirmed some key details about the
$80 million pavilion, which is being financed by New York State. The polygonal pavilion will range in height from 57 to 72 feet (roughly equal to a
six-story office building). It will contain 47,499 square feet of floor area; 34,834 square feet devoted to public programs and museum functions,
the rest to ventilating ductwork and mechanical equipment serving the underground museum, the nearby World Trade Center Transportation Hub and the
No. 1 subway line.
The ground floor will have ticket windows, a large security area in which visitors will undergo airport-style screening, and a staircase, escalators and
elevators down which they will begin a trip that will lead them nearly 70 feet below street level, ending near an exposed part of the slurry wall. There
will also be exit doors ushering them into the heart of the memorial plaza.
On the second floor will be a 180-seat auditorium, a private room in which relatives of 9/11 victims may gather, an overlook from which visitors can
take in a sweeping view of the memorial, and a small cafe. (”For sustenance,” Mr. Dykers said, “not a restaurant per se.”)
The third floor will be given over entirely to equipment and ventilation.
The museum is to open in 2012, a year after the memorial plaza. It is not yet known whether an admission fee will be charged. Museum officials have
estimated the annual maintenance cost of the memorial and museum at $45 million to $50 million. “If we can get the money from other sources, we won’t
charge,” said Joseph C. Daniels, the president and chief executive.
About five million visitors are expected annually, said Alice M. Greenwald, the museum director. The building is designed to handle 1,500 people arriving
an hour, she said.

Well the building's exterior is as problematic - turning its back at the city, being such a Nouvel rip-off (and a bad one, if you have to steal, do it well at least) etc. But yes that's really a shame, such a wasted opertunity.

ramblersen August 17th, 2009, 01:27 PM 3XN will be designing a 5-star hotel in Cairo, part of the Cairo Expo City development. Their head architect Kim Herforth Nielsen was a judge in a competition on the masterplan for the area (won by Hadid), so I guess he sweattalked someone. No renderings yet. Will be interesting to see what they can come up with for a place with low construction costs and a presumed taste for bling-bling.

Architect who threatened to sue National Museums Liverpool to hold talks next month
Dec 28 2009
by Ben Schofield, Liverpool Daily Post
AN ARCHITECT who threatened to sue National Museums Liverpool for breach of copyright is due in the city for talks with heritage chiefs next month.
Danish designers 3XN were behind the new Museum of Liverpool’s distinctive “X-Wing” shape.
But they were acrimoniously dropped from the project in favour of Manchester-based architects AEW when building was due to start.
Last year, 3XN’s principal architect, Kim Nielsen, said his firm was considering legal action against NML after the falling-out.
The Dane – whose firm picked up the Royal Institute of British Architects’ coveted International Award in 2009 – also claimed NML had withheld payments for the design work.
Now Mr Nielsen is due to return to Liverpool in January to meet NML director Dr David Fleming.
Speaking exclusively to the Daily Post, he refused to rule out legal action or say if NML had settled its bills with 3XN.
But he noted AEW had stayed largely true to 3XN’s original design, changing only the cladding material, the toilets and the access ramps.
Last year, Mr Nielsen said NML still owed his firm “a lot of money”.
Confirming the meeting was due to take place, NML said Dr Fleming and Mr Nielsen would be discussing how to “promote” the new museum once it is completed later in 2010.
Mr Nielsen said last night: “We are due to fly to Liverpool just after Christmas to have a friendly meeting with the client. I am coming over at the start of January.
“Our aim is to have a gentlemen’s agreement (with the client). I think things are going in the right way now.
http://i45.tinypic.com/mvsxvl.jpg
A disagreement between the Danish architect office 3 X Nielsen and the client resulted in the architects being fired. This did not prevent the client from buiding the museum to more or less the original design in collaboration with a Manchester based firm.
Sounds a bit like Sydney Opera House.
Anyway, according to this article the affair may end amicably.

I think the Cairo EXPO project was for a masterplan competition ultimately won by Hadid, I think Danish 3XM is supposed to make a 5-star hotel for that development.
Don't know anything about the others, they look mighty sweet though as Snøhetta's projects usually do. Hopefully they will soon win the competition in Malm¨for that concert hall and congress centre.:)

http://rasmusbroennum.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/ascreenshoot236.jpg?w=640&h=358
Now it's here, the DEFINITIVE proof of exactly how hot Danish architecture is internationally. In the film masterpiece Sex and the City 2, a "Danish architect" appears as the toy-boy--wonder to end all toy-boy-wonder-wonders - slightly mysterious and top-tanned! It has been confirmed that the original intention was to let Bjarke Ingels - who is currently a guest professor in the City (at Columbia University, no confirmed reports of any sex though) - appear as himself until he was ultimately deemed too short by the relevant scenes's female protagonist, Samantha Jones/Kim Cattrall, and replaced by a Rikhard Spirit played by Max Ryan. Well I made up the bit about Bjarke Ingels but the rest is true. Does it get any cooler?
But here's the real SATC2 talking point to pull out at the Memorial Day barbecue: when the girls find themselves in Abu Dhabi on a press junket, Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), who the sequel finds fending off menopause with the help of Suzanne Somers and fistfuls of synthetic hormones, is seduced by none other than a raffish architect! A dashing, grizzled-a-la-Richard-Branson figure roars up out of nowhere in the back of a jeep, dazzles the women, and then disappears over the dunes (which writer/director Michael Patrick King told us are the very same dunes that appeared in Lawrence of Arabia). He's revealed to be one Rikard Spirit (Max Ryan), "a Danish architect" staying at the same hotel as the ladies. The film, which we found maddeningly short on exterior shots, doesn't say any more about Spirit's work, but a crude pun, sexual hijinks, and a plot-pivoting scuffle with the Abu Dhabi authorities all come courtesy of the architect, a design-minded deus ex machina.

mlm August 20th, 2010, 11:13 PM ^^ They're really on a roll these days. I visited the BIG office last week for an interview with Bjarke Ingels and the office is just packed with cool huge models. Many of them unknown to me. :)
Jarmo K August 26th, 2010, 10:39 AM ^ cool, will the interview be published soon? in english or danish?
mlm August 26th, 2010, 05:07 PM ^^ In Danish. It wasn't really much about architecture though (unfortunately), more about him as the leader of his company. I think it's for a "business magazine", but not sure when it will be puslished.

ramblersen September 7th, 2010, 02:38 PM With a reference to Bart Lootsma's book Superdutch: New Architecture in the Netherlands from 2000 which highlighted 12 innovative Dutch architects, has the international architecture forum ARCHITIZER zoomed in on Danish architecture under the title Superdanish. They cover both the young generation of innovative practices spearheaded by BIG/PLOT and the more established firms. Most of the featured projects are from our region but I think this is still the most relevant thread to post it in since it relates to the international reputation and influence of Danish architecture.

The Superdanish
At the turn of the 21st century, architect Rem Koolhaas was, needless to say, a big deal. Making a name for himself on a global level with SMLXL (coupled with a handful of award-winning projects), Koolhaas became a prominent figure in both the professional and academic worlds. Bart Lootsma felt that other innovative Dutch architects should share in OMA’s limelight and in 2000 created a book presenting the work of twelve contemporary Dutch architectures titled Superdutch: New Architecture in the Netherlands.
Profiling the work of both established and up and coming Dutch firms, Superdutch became a showcase of practices on the verge of being the next wave of global architectural players. Within the book, OMA along with UN Studio, Mecanoo, MVRDV and West 8 (all firms still making architecture headlines today) showed how they were changing the world of architecture one project at a time.
Shortly after Superdutch hit bookshelves, two ambitious young architects decided to combine their design abilities and began a firm in Denmark simply known as PLOT. Under this alias, Bjarke Ingels and Julien De Smedt* (who met while working for OMA) spent the next 5 years creating narrative-based architecture analyzing practical and theoretical issues. In 2006, the founders of PLOT decided to go their separate ways, creating BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) and JDS (Julien De Smedt Architects). Expanding upon their once-collaborative experience, the architects have managed to establish their respective firms major players in the architecture world.
Currently, the Danish architectural invasion seems to be in full force. Alongside BIG and JDS, a new batch of up-and-coming Danes have been making waves in the field — the Superdanish, if you will.

Not to be outdone by the younger generation of firms, Danish architectural staples Henning Larsen (who celebrated their 50th anniversary last year), C. F. Møller Architects (which was founded in 1924) and 3XN have been stepping up their proverbial game, recently completing a number of competition/award-winning projects of their own.
The Danish have been historically known for creating truly iconic buildings (Sydney Opera house by Pritzker Prize recipient and proud Dane Jørn Utzon, anyone?). With their highly saturated renderings and strong formal gestures, it seems that the current generation of designers hope for nothing less than to follow in their predecessors’ footsteps. Only time will tell how influential these firms, and their architecture, will become. For now, it is safe to assume that Superdanish architecture will not lose global interest any time soon.
A week hardly goes by without a new project coming out of Denmark winning an international competition or design award. Below are a slew of images showcasing many of these unique projects and the firms behind them.

The international presentation of Danish architects moves from toy-boy--wonder in the recent Sex & the City 2 movie (cf. the previous page of this thread) to cover boy-meets-comic book super heroe when the October - Masters of Design issue of the magazine Fast Company brings an interview with Bjarke Ingels.
In the world of architecture, there’s no hotter upstart than Denmark’s Bjarke Ingels Group. BIG’s ambitious buildings are poetic, practical and unlike anything else.

Both are sources which you refer to relates to the repuattion of Danish architecture outside our region and a significant part of the content is about projects outside our region. I therefore see them as highly relevant to this thread. I know that you are only here to wag your nationalistic tail but some of us are here to share information about architecture and urban development and the two sources you refer to are actually about just that. And to me they seem a lot more relevant to this thread than in the "International media about our countries"-thread or a Danish thread. I honestly think there is a very big difference to posting whole series of projects which has not even been designed by anyone from our region and where they might just as well be posted in the "Beyond N&B thread where they belong). Otherwise where does it stop, should we also post projects built by engineers from our region, or which has windows from a Scandinavian window manufacturerm or just with floors made out of Norwegian timber?
That you will see a problem in these postings you refer to can hardly come has a surprise to anyone but if other people in general find them irrelevant I'll happily remove them and reconsider what I post in here. Abyone?
And as I already wrote in my answer to Þróndeimr, I was under the impression that you Norwegians had lots of unposted projects, so why not just post them instead?:)

There was no attitude whatsoever in what I wrote. I merely asked Þróndeimr to post his renderings in the relevant thread since they were totally off topic here which they were. He agreed with me and seemed to have no problem with my suggestion, I don't know why you in your usual manipulative and childish way try to make an issue out of it - or rather, I do know why, but it is really dumb even for you.
I don't know why I should pm him about this matter, it was not like what I wrote was some fierce criticism or personal attack. great renderings which merely belonged somewhere else and since there werre a lot of them I found it relevant to point out that they belonged somewhere else. Secondly it is my experience that noone check their personal messages except for administrators.

In the attempt to bring this thread back on topic, here are some buildings which from outside our region which were designed by Danish architects.
In Athens the Danish brothers Christian and Theophilus Hansen designed the so-called Neoclassical Trilogy - consisting of the University, the Academy and the Observatory - as well as many other buildings. Theophilus later continued to Austria where achieved as great success with buildings such as the Parliament Building and Musikverein which is often referred to as the world's best concert hall.

ramblersen November 9th, 2010, 07:18 PM More good news from schmidt hammer lassen architects based in Aarhus, Denmark. They've once again won an international competition though this time it's in collaboration with the Canadian architectural firm Fowler Bauld & Mitchell for a new main library in the city of Halifax, Canada.

By the book...
Collaborating practices embark on four months additional design development for Halifax Central Library
On November 4th 2010 in Halifax, Canada the design for the new Halifax Central Library was revealed at the fifth public consultation meeting. During this meeting the architects identified the trends from all four of the prior public meetings and showed how the building design has responded to the users' ideas.
The 45m Canadian dollars (€ 33m) Central Library in the Canadian port city of Halifax, Nova Scotia will have a clear Canadian reference as well as a detectable Scandinavian design heritage as the winning team behind the design is the Canadian architectural practice Fowler Bauld & Mitchell and Danish schmidt hammer lassen architects. In March 2010, Fowler Bauld & Mitchell and schmidt hammer lassen architects won the international competition to design Halifax Central Library.
"In the design process we have been particular keen on reflecting the spirit of the local community as well as the ‘genus loci' of the site making Halifax Central Library unique in many ways. We believe that Halifax Central Library will become a landmark cultural hub for the community," said Morten Schmidt, Founding Partner at schmidt hammer lassen architects.
At this point, Fowler Bauld & Mitchell and schmidt hammer lassen architects enter four months of Design Development, with a final public presentation and unveiling of the final detail design in March/April 2011. Breaking ground is scheduled for mid 2011 and the library is due for completion in early 2014.

ramblersen November 10th, 2010, 01:56 PM A couple of month ago I saw a brief mention in another context (http://ibyen.dk/gadeplan/ECE1020379/arkitekt-oerestad-traenger-til-nogle-kolonihaver/) that 3Xm had just won a competition for an arena in Abu Dhabi but I haven't really seen anything more about it.
But I guess a good guess is that it is this one although it doesn't say anything about them winning though and the client is confidential:
Location: Middle East
Client: Confidential
Area: 56,000 m2
Competition Proposal: 2010
Architect: 3XN and HKS 3XN
Website: www.3xn.dk
The centrifugal power of the whirlwind is interpreted into this dynamic and vibrant Arena design, reflecting the energy and growth of the Middle East region. The metaphoric Arena generates a strong architectural and visionary icon defined by the idea of the whirlwind. The ‘jet streams’ from the whirlwind form integrated shaded corridors, which meet and extend the lines of the area and thereby create a close connecting between the building and its surroundings.

3XN is drawing the skyline of Mumbei
During the next year 3XN will design a number of luxury residential towers with integrated rehabilitated housing.
The cooperation with Indian developer Rohan Developers is the result of two years of relationship building and a desire to bring something different to the rapidly transforming skyline of Mumbai. The project is characterized by a high degree of environmental and social sustainability.
"In addition to designing towers which will be part of the new skyline of South Mumbai, each project includes a housing project to re-house those who were previously living in slums. We have studied the slum societies in order to create housing which will keep traditional ways of life. In essence each ultra luxury tower will give back to society by also giving dignified living quarters to those who have been displaced," says 3XNs Principal, Kim Herforth Nielsen.

ramblersen January 7th, 2011, 03:13 PM According to Danish business newspaper Børsen, Henning Larsen Architects have won a competition for the design of a large conference centre in Nigeria:
Danish architectural office wins project in Africa13:14 The Danish architectural office Henning Larsen Architects has won an international competition for a big conference center in Nigeria, Africa.
The new center, Calabar International Conference Center, is to be constructed in the south eastern part of Nigeria. The center will be a significant building in a river estuary of scenic beauty in the Cross River province on the borderline between Nigeria and Cameroun.
»Our task will be to carry out a project which may create an international profile for Calabar,« said architect and associate partner Ulrik Raysse from the architectural firm.
Calabar is already today the host of many conferences but wants a new conference center in order to be able to attract more international conferences and tourists.
»Nigeria is experiencing a rapid development, and an invitation to contribute to this development is also an obligation to make architecture more than a question of geometry. Architecture is also development of society,« said international design director and partner Louis Becker, Henning Larsen Architects.
Henning Larsen Architects has designed several culture and conference centres and also earlier worked in Africa. In 1992, the construction of the Nation Center in Kenya’s capital Nairobi was completed. Ritzau/BNS

ramblersen January 31st, 2011, 04:21 PM Lundgaard & Tranberg has won a competition for a new national monument in Oman with a 12-floors open exhibition building/highrise structure. This tiny rendering is the only one I could find - the shape kind of reminds me of their SEB Bank in Copenhagen:
http://main.omanobserver.om/files/imagecache/250x250/rbimages/1295968610379417300.jpg
The Minaret is an awe-inspiring new monument, which exemplifies Oman’s Renaissance, to be constructed on the outermost point of the Muttrah Sea Road. The architects of this magnificent structure are Lundgaard and Tranberg Architects A/S from Denmark and the structure will be seen as a guiding light for the entire nation.
The year 2010 was the 40th Renaissance anniversary of the reign of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos. The Minaret will reflect this unique Renaissance with a special focus on heritage, resources, exchange, organic growth and education. Built with extensive use of native materials, it will be a compelling, beguiling and beautiful monument. As the character and amount of light changes through the day and night, the monument’s appearance and atmosphere will change.
Its open structure tells of Omani hospitality and the wish for continued exchange and co-operation. At the base will be a park of shade-giving vegetation and space to rest and relax. Inside will be a visitor centre and 12 floors of exhibition space focusing on Omani heritage and telling the story of the Renaissance. At the high point, visitors will find space to enjoy breathtaking views of the Muttrah Mountains and the sea, as well as a restaurant/cafe.

And an article over four pages from New York Magazine on the project:
Pyramid Scheme
Bjarke Ingels reinvents the New York apartment building.
http://images.nymag.com/arts/architecture/features/bjarkeingels110214_560.jpg
Architects mature slowly; prodigies are rare. Yet at an age when most of his peers are still sitting in cubicles, laboring over light fixtures and door handles, Bjarke Ingels, a photogenic 36-year-old Dane with offices on two continents and projects on three, is about to revamp one of New York’s basic units: the apartment building. In every growth spurt, rental towers pop up all over the city like architectural acne, a pox of large, unsightly blocks whose creators claim it’s the best they can do, given financial realities and a restrictive zoning code. Ingels has flicked away those excuses. For the desolate juncture of 57th Street and the West Side Highway, he has designed an utterly unexpected form, neither tower nor slab nor even quite a pyramid, but a gracefully asymmetrical peak with a landscaped bower in its hollowed core. It looks wild, but it’s born of logic; true originality is the inevitable endpoint of rigorous thought.
On yet another biting cold day, Ingels cheerfully locks his foldable bicycle to a street sign in Chelsea and slides into a diner banquette to discuss his New York debut. Having naughtily dropped a few public hints about the project before his client, Durst Fetner Residential, was quite ready for the attention, he is now simultaneously excited and cagey. The new building, he explains, will fuse two apparently incompatible types: a European-style, low-rise apartment block encircling a courtyard, and a Manhattan tower-on-a-podium, yielding something that looks like neither and behaves like both. New York is ready to embrace such a griffin, he insists: “This is the country that invented surf and turf! To put a lobster on a steak—any French chef would tell you that’s a crime.”
Ingels, who has been a visiting professor at Rice University, Harvard, and Columbia, is an unabashed Americanophile. “Europeans like to declare the U.S. dead, but it’s a convenient fiction,” he says. “So many European architects have been influenced by America, and I’m interested to discover that part of Danish culture.” So he has become a part-time New Yorker; he’s rented an apartment in Tribeca, opened an office in Chelsea, and bought a vintage Porsche for jaunts out of town.
Copenhagen gave his career a running start. Ingels had just come off three years at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, Rem Koolhaas’s Dutch genius factory, and he and a former associate got the job of building the Copenhagen Harbour Bath, a peaked wooden iceberg from which kids can dive into newly limpid city waters. By 2005, his first residential project had sprouted in the planned quarter of Ørestad, an open field fifteen minutes by subway from downtown that now houses a concert hall designed by Jean Nouvel. Ingels was attracting plenty of interest, but he was still feeling cut off. “The natural transit of the international intelligentsia through Copenhagen is quite limited,” he says drily.
Well before opening a New York outpost, the Bjarke Ingels Group, founded in 2005 and known by its swaggering acronym, BIG, had turned American-style surf and turf into an architectural philosophy. One of the Ørestad projects merged suburban development with dense city living by stacking little houses with yards into a precipitous mound over a parking garage. To emphasize the building’s loftiness, a steel façade displays a perforated image of Everest. For a native of a little platelike country, Ingels sure has alpine cravings: BIG has just won a competition to build a waste-to-energy plant that will loom over Copenhagen’s lagoon—and double as an artificial ski slope.
Now he is bringing the mountain to Manhattan. Durst’s West 57th Street site is a large, unpromising oblong plot pointing toward the liftoff point of the West Side Highway and flanked by an active but largely empty steam plant and a new garbage-truck garage. Ingels’s design capitalizes on the city’s steady march to the ever-more-verdant riverfront, where industry meets leisure. He and his architects had multiple tasks: turn the building toward the water, leave neighbors’ views as intact as possible, and negotiate a transition from the low-slung silhouette of Hell’s Kitchen to the long-necked towers of Riverside South. At the same time, Ingels wanted to make a “blatant” connection with Hudson River Park, and pull its greenery into the heart of the architecture in the form of a spacious court. To open up views, the building dips down at its southwestern corner. To mitigate traffic noise, it pulls back from the highway and the sanitation garage, rising along a steep, continuous slope to a sharp 450-foot summit. These methodical steps yield a sierralike outline familiar from as far back as Copenhagen’s Harbour Bath, and while that shape may one day devolve into a stylistic tic, for now it feels natural and fresh.
In a gridded city, reason would seem to dictate an architecture of seamless planes and perpendicular lines, but Ingels has found a more efficient eccentricity. Balconies slash the inclined plane. The apartments slant away from the corridor like fishbones so that windows on 58th Street frame westward views. Ingels is a virtuoso of repetitive protrusions: Instead of facing the building with a slick screen of glass, he breaks it into a Cubist expanse of windowed bays.
The design still has a long parade of approvals to win, beginning with a community- board presentation on February 9, but already it’s clear that without giving up a rentable square foot, busting a frugal developer’s budget, or requesting more than minor tweaks to city rules, Ingels has reinvented a type of architecture that seemed immune to innovation. To understand just how difficult that is to pull off, it helps to look a few blocks away, at Eleventh Avenue and 54th Street, where Ten Arquitectos is making a similar attempt to bundle greenery, rental apartments, and commercial space into an unorthodox topography. There, in a building to be called Clinton Park and now under construction, an S-shaped slab with a terraced roof climbs from a low-rise to a block-long tower. The separate parts join awkwardly, with none of the Durst project’s choreographic grace.
In videos of his interviews and talks, Ingels comes across as a supercharged amalgam of talent, charm, and overpowering ego. In person, he adopts a slightly sheepish version of his public persona, as if not quite sure how his brashness will play. Gauging reactions is not just an aspect of his temperament, but a strategy of radical adorableness. An inspiration is sometimes indistinguishable from a sales pitch. To prove that an apparently lunatic quartet of Himalaya-shaped towers could be constructed with simple materials and traditional techniques, he had his staff erect a room-size model out of 250,000 Lego bricks.
When it was time to issue the firm’s first monograph, instead of producing another sober coffee-table-crusher, he decided to make it a graphic novel, starring himself. With his superhero’s jaw and camera-ready uniform (black hoodie over black T-shirt emblazoned with a speech-bubble logo), he makes a plausible Architectureman. Still, it was a characteristically cheeky move: The darling of academe risked looking unserious, and potential clients might shudder at the thought of one day turning up as comic-book villains. But Ingels wanted to present built works as endpoints of stories that included wrong turns and setbacks as well as bolts of insight. (One frame shows a client reacting to a proposal in alarm: “He thought it looked like something designed by Darth Vader.”) And lest readers be misled into thinking Ingels was being self-deprecating, the book begins with a declaration of lineage. A suite of full-page photographs of prophets and their evolving mottos—Mies van der Rohe (“Less Is More”), Robert Venturi (“Less Is a Bore”), Philip Johnson (“I’m a Whore”), Ingels’s former employer Rem Koolhaas (“More Is More”), and Barack Obama (“Yes, We Can!”)—culminates in a picture of Ingels himself. The book’s ringingly cryptic title is an amalgam of all these slogans: Yes Is More.
The swashbuckling architect makes an odd pair with Douglas Durst, the shy, shambling scion of the New York real-estate family who is introducing Ingels to America. Durst was a prime mover in the reinvention of Times Square—he put up the Condé Nast Building and the crystal tower at One Bryant Park—but he has generally opted for experienced, deliberate firms like FXFowle and its spinoff, Cook + Fox. A revolutionary he is not. When the Copenhagen City Council invited Durst (whose wife, Susanne, is Danish) to give a talk about green high-rises in 2006, an affably obnoxious young architect waylaid him afterward to ask: “Why do all your buildings look like buildings?” By rights, Durst should have snickered and walked away. Instead, he kept in touch, caught a show of Ingels’s work at the Storefront for Art and Architecture.
Then, two years ago, Durst needed a new idea. He had controlled the 57th Street lot for nearly a decade, and in that time it had generated a procession of abortive ideas: a data-processing center that seemed too vulnerable after 9/11, a private school that was never able to get financing, a residential skyscraper that proved impractical, and a more modest low-rise that would wrap around a courtyard. On another trip to Copenhagen, Durst toured BIG’s offices and was impressed that such a young firm should have so many and such varied projects under construction, ranging from the Danish pavilion for the Expo 2010 Shanghai to a fantastical national library in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.
“Bjarke doesn’t have a style that he imposes on all his projects,” Durst says. “He makes an effort to understand what the client needs.” Durst especially liked a plan for a three-sided Stockholm airport hotel where each façade, seen from a distance, resolved into a portrait of one of the children of the Swedish king. I ask Durst if he plans to engrave his own children’s likenesses on the side of his new building, and he laughs. He did, however, name a rental tower after his daughter Helena.
What drew Ingels to Durst was not just a valuable connection, but the developer’s reputation for merging profit and environmental activism. “Sustainability is not just for tree-hugging romantics who have an ideological image that the world was better before,” Ingels says. “It’s economical and even profitable: A small extra effort in construction can produce a bonus that lasts for years. But if you’re working with developers who are thinking in the short term, then it doesn’t make a lot of sense. That’s what I like about Durst: They’re going to keep the building forever.” In New York’s unsentimental real-estate climate, he has found fresh support for his belief that making the client happy is the ultimate creative challenge.
“Colleagues warned me that working with American developers would be impossible because all they think about is money. But developers that don’t think about money don’t exist for very long. Durst wants to make the neighborhood as desirable and livable as possible, and this project is about trying to make a place where there isn’t one now.” (One-fifth of the apartments will be set aside as affordable housing.)
A few weeks later, Ingels calls from Davos, where he’s holding court at the World Economic Forum. “I’m neither a politician nor incredibly rich, but there are a lot of real-estate people here, and quite a bit of our work has to do with social and environmental issues,” he shouts over a squawky cell phone. Then he has to go. Dinner is being served, and the guests are clamoring. It’s time for Architectureman to tend to his burgeoning fame.
