View Full Version : Downtown San Diego

Downtown San Diego has been goin intense re-development over the past few years. So far they have built a new baseball stadium about 5 or 6 new towers over 30 floors and these are some of the current projects that have already been approved or are under construction now. Due to a stupid height restriction of 500 ft our skyline will not be getting any taller but we'll definetly be getting a lot more dense and modern.

Some of those are really nice. Especially the one that looks like Burj AL Arab
(3rd one down)

I agree. The height restriction is stupid. Do you know the reason for it? I lived there for over 12 years, and always wondered why they never lifted it.

Something about the airport being os close to downtown and a supertall building would interfere with plane equipmentor communications or something like that.

Thats how i heard it too, Downtown San Diego, lay in the landing pattern of lindberge field, and the FAA won't allow anything higher than 500'. i was of the opinion that that's why highrise construction was moving toward the south of downtown, to maybe get outside the restriction zone, However the buildings shown here, are a great example of what can be produced, even with such a restriction.

Its good they are building new towers in SD, even when they are over the top expensive condos. I personally like the Burj AL Arab wannabe that will be next to the Convention Center, its a great location for it.

If you're wondering about the downtown height restriction, this picture is very illustrative. On the left side of the photo you can see a runway if you look real close. It goes left-right in this pic. That's San Diego's only passenger airport's only runway, which operates from west to east, which is right to left. Planes come in low over the squarish park, Balboa Park, in the center of the pic. To the left of the park is downtown San Diego. Just barely south of the flight path for landing planes. In fact, one of the greatest views available occurs when you sit on the left side of the plane on a landing into Lindbergh Field. You can almost see the people working away in the office buildings.

It's already a close landing and I'm surprised that any skyscrapers were allowed to be built there in the first place. But since they are, I think a limit of 500' is a good idea. I also think that future construction should be on the southern side of downtown.

Well, there is always the possibility that the city decides to move the airport somewhere else since Lindbergh field won't be able to handle the heat in about 10 years or so, but their new airport commission is as fast as a handicapped snail.

So true. Remember all the talk that they were going to convert Brown field into the new Airport?

lrd1rocha
March 11th, 2005, 08:12 AM
Yeah, but I really doubt that will actually happen. In fact, a national newspaper said that the local politicians were desperate to get a new airport for the city, but they were even more desperate to avoid building the new airport in their areas of the city. In any case, the Brown Field convertion seems great, even when the 905 would had to be modified again.

The whole west coast, from San Diego to Seattle is in need of more runways and places to put them near the population centers, but with the Nimby'ers it can be very difficult.

I was so disappointed in San Diego... puny, short, uninspired.

But if you are stuck with a 500' ceiling then this is the way to go... half of those are great if executed as designed. Time for San Diego to step it up. Beautiful place but the city builders haven't...... built. Future looks bright.

From Harbor Island or Shelter Island downtown San Diego looks awesome!! I especially love watching the planes coming over the hill and flying by downtown on their way to the airport.

Odd, since most people agree that while SD's skyline is short it is quite original and different from any other skyline of the same size.

In any case, I found the other proposed redevelopments that lost to the Sasaki/Wellington Design.

Nice skyline, but they have to do something about the homeless. I don`t like walking in downtown because of it. Also the Spanish speaking people down there are rude.

Ohhh man Shelter Island...... :)

What a place - I stayed in Humphrey's Half Moon Inn while i was there - absolutely stunning.

And what a view of the skyline! I was there for the July 4th Fireworks display.... :eek2:

Awesome.
