Its sexiness. Chad August 17th, 2005, 04:53 PM Drop-dead gorgeous... colemonkee August 17th, 2005, 08:40 PM looking great! its a shame that the glazing doesnt go all the way up the fin. Actually, the glass should go all the way to the top of the fins. It does in the rendering. salamagd August 17th, 2005, 11:05 PM Actually, the glass should go all the way to the top of the fins. It does in the rendering. Unfortunately, this is one of a number of areas in which economic cost-cutting has caused the tower's final appearance to be different to that in the initial renders. The glass won't be going to the top of the fins :( crazyevildude August 17th, 2005, 11:20 PM Cost-cutting? How much can a few metres of extra glass cost? Maybe $10,000? Whatever it is it can't be much compared to the cost of the entire building...:S. CULWULLA August 18th, 2005, 08:42 AM as i mentioned a few days ago, it wasnt cost cutting at all, it was all beacuse of the BMU equipment using the frame as a runner. who cares. looks fabulous! JayT August 18th, 2005, 09:06 AM as i mentioned a few days ago, it wasnt cost cutting at all, it was all beacuse of the BMU equipment using the frame as a runner. who cares. looks fabulous! I wouldn't waste your time Cul - some people are determined to find some fault with this tower simply because its one of the tallest buildings in the Southern Hemesphere - and because its in Queensland. Tall poppy syndrome at work. Malt August 18th, 2005, 09:12 AM Im from QLD and i find fault in it becuase there is plenty of fault. Not becuase its a crap tower, but becuase the renders lead most to believe it would be a tall, smooth, shiney tower when in reality it isnt that That is not to say that its not good, but it is a letdown from what we were expecting. Denying this is stupid. nOchAos August 18th, 2005, 09:40 AM How are they gonna get the last crane down?? DrDan August 18th, 2005, 09:52 AM I'm a bit disappointed with the top of the tower. The fin, yes, but also the fact that the back (as seen in previous photos) looks a lot more mish-mash than I would have expected. I guess this must have been done to increase views. Avatar August 18th, 2005, 11:00 AM I am totallly impartial and I am sorry to say the tower has turned out to be quite boring, mundane and plain. With the cost-cutting and supply problems for the reflective glazing to these new issues and a refusal to clad the very top of the fin I am upset. This whole building has turned into a fucking joke. Sure it is nice addition to the skyline and Australia but it falls well short of the originally intended design we all thought we were to be treated to. So much for the "cando" nation it simply highlights a "she'll be right", half-arsed mentality entrenched in the Australian psychi. It depresses me a little. We can work wonders and do things right, it's just unfortunate this building did not live up to expectation. I mean this is a landmark for Surfers, QLD and Australia - one would think the decision makers investing their efforts and monies would want something almost perfect - not some semi-completed, 80% effort gracing our skylines. It has really turned out to be the biggest example of "near enough is good enough" development in Australia. Pretty sad really I expected more. We hope Soul and the other developments mooted for the Gold Coast add to the skyline with smooth, shiny perfection and materialise as they were originally intended. For those that don't like the rear side of the fin, I am surprised, I find this part of the tower the most enduring and most interesting - in both shape form and difference. bennyboiler August 18th, 2005, 11:43 AM You have become the biggest fucking whinger lately. Sumeet August 18th, 2005, 11:44 AM looking good there Avatar August 18th, 2005, 03:29 PM LOL I always whinged about Q1 and its facade... it is half-arsed. It would have been spectacular if they had got the right glass... so much for Australia having factories than could make it in time and in the qunatities required. As a yank living in Perth I doubt if you can comment on the sloppy attitude that Avatar is refering to. It does exist in spades and QI is just another example of something that was a good idea at the time but just way to hard to do properly. Take off the rose coloured glasses mate and stop dreaming of an idealised Australia that dosent really exist. Trances August 19th, 2005, 04:11 AM i am deeply cut about the top as well but then deal with it as its as good as it gets used to false hope and being shot down with so many towers in the past will get over the lost and take the tower for what it is Homeroids August 19th, 2005, 04:16 AM As a yank living in Perth I doubt if you can comment on the sloppy attitude that Avatar is refering to. And this thread does contain a whole nuch of awesome update pics!! That skyline pic (page 13) kicks ass!! Trances August 25th, 2005, 12:55 AM did not realise how small the podium was elliot August 25th, 2005, 01:05 AM The top looks fine. It's the curtain wall/glazing that ruins it. And there's so much of it... CULWULLA August 25th, 2005, 01:46 AM curtain walls fine fin now complete todays pic by Aussie Buoy http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y246/AussieBhoy/Gold%20Coast/GC7.jpg SUNNI August 25th, 2005, 12:14 PM lovely isnt it? :angel1: Sonic from Padova August 25th, 2005, 12:34 PM Wow, the best skyscraper of the Australia is now completed, I love it! :) and thanks for Muse for the great pics of the entrace, I never see it before! beiklopa August 25th, 2005, 01:25 PM fucking boring! Valeroso August 25th, 2005, 01:44 PM I actually don't think its that bad, Avatar. But by saying that, I guess I also have to admit I didn't exactly know the initial design. But I really like its current appearance. Its beautiful; has nice colours, and it's tall. The only thing I probably don't like about it is its spire. The only design I ever saw (on Sixty Minutes - back it when was good), the spire looked much more appealing. And it actually pisses me off that they made the tower 322 M tall, when there are only 10 more metres left to beat the tallest structure in the Southern Hemisphere! :bash: SUNNI August 26th, 2005, 02:16 PM fucking boring! im not really sure if any Dubai towers are interesting either :weirdo: Taxidermista August 26th, 2005, 03:50 PM im not really sure if any Dubai towers are interesting either :weirdo: There are fucking boring towers in Dubai, there are also fucking interesting ones. The same amazing phenomenon happens in Australia. Muse August 26th, 2005, 04:29 PM Now children, settle down. The same "phenomenon" happens in any country, in any city. CULWULLA September 14th, 2005, 02:46 PM It's really really really Beautiful. Is it because the architect, the developer or Gold Coast? The architect was developers SUNLAND own architect- Eric Lee. Chino_waro September 16th, 2005, 04:03 AM Great tower no Doubt!!!! but that antena adds alot of height CULWULLA September 16th, 2005, 04:18 AM ^ its a spire not antenna.lol but only half the spire adds to the height! only 47m extends past 275m fin. The 93m/305ft spire weighs 110 tonnes and measures 1.8m dia > .8m). Ellatur September 16th, 2005, 04:18 AM awesome pics! Hardie September 16th, 2005, 01:47 PM Definitely an impressive building!! Chad September 16th, 2005, 03:02 PM Surreally unreal... B@dGuYoM September 17th, 2005, 02:05 PM one of my fav' building actually, simply beautiful :) CULWULLA September 17th, 2005, 02:31 PM Definitely an impressive building!! Just a philosophical point, massive shadows on the beach!, always a controversial issue? the developers located the tower 80m back from the beach and angled the oval shaped tower facing southeast. It actually doesnt shadow the beach in the enforced hours (11am-2pm) winter. the top section of tower is "see-thru" so sun can pass through to beach.the shadows are actually welcomed in late afternoon in summer. it gets pretty damn hot on the beach and people dont mind the shade after a few hours of sun. Hardie September 17th, 2005, 02:57 PM Cul, With that spin on it, you've almost sold the concept to me :) Privately, I'd debate you otherwise. It's still a stunning building, and that's what the Goldcoast is all about (not my favourite place in oz tho). Taken from Aquarius That's an incredible photo alright. Q1 was hit by lightning 8 times last night. There's a thread about it here (http://skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=273015) front of the Gold Coast Bulletin: http://home.iprimus.com.au/brett_stainlay/front.jpg invincible October 25th, 2005, 09:44 AM The buildings lighting looked stunning as pink, they should have rotating colour patterns all the time. I find the plain white lighting a bit boring.. I don't think the residents would be very happy. The spire of 101 Collins St in Melbourne is lit in such a way though - it cycles through several colours slowly. Urban Dave October 25th, 2005, 10:24 AM  Cool! Avatar October 25th, 2005, 10:38 AM The pink is mega hot but yeah like people have said the residents would be less than impressed. Their appartments on the upper floors must be bathed in pink light. Well the official opening was last night, and now Sunland turn their focus to Q2: Soheil ponders Q2 27Oct05 Q1 developer Soheil Abedian has yet to spend a night in his record-setting tower, yet he's ready to build another this time even bigger. Opening the 80-level high rise the world's tallest residential build-ing to holidaymakers yesterday, Sunland boss Mr Abedian said the 'sky was the limit'. "Providing the land and approvals came together, I would be prepared to take it even higher than the Q1," he said. "This building has turned out even more beautiful than I dreamed. "Why shouldn't we try it again? "We never set out to break records with the Q1. We wanted two 40-storey towers then decided one 80- storey tower wouldbe better and wejust happened to be the tallest." Mr Abedian said despite doubts about the building and its buyers, 358 of the tower's 475 apartments between levels three and 61 settled as planned on October 14. He said it was the fastest settlement in Queensland and enabled Sunland to repay all of the project's $307 million construction costs after one day. "We have heard so much criticism that we would never get approval, that we would never get the funding, we would never start construction, the building is sinking or windows are popping out but now we are vindicated," he said. "All the world's great landmarks were met with such criticism, so perhaps it is a good sign for the Q1." Mr Abedian said holiday accommodation packages started at $230 a night and bookings were strong. He praised the one, two and three- bedroom units from level three upwards, but said he was yet to sample the tower's luxury. "I haven't slept here yet," he said. "I will when my wife lets me. "We've been too busy working." Each of the holiday apartments has a modern decor with glass and granite finishes, stainless steel appliances and a frameless glass balcony enclosure. Facilities include two lagoon swimming pools, a sandy beach, indoor swimming pool, fitness venue, conference facilities, inhouse theatre and a beach club, which opens in December. The Q1 spa will open late next month while the retail precinctwill be launched in December, along with Australia's only beachside observation deck, 235m above the ground with 360-degree views from Brisbane to Byron Bay. The Skylight Room above the observation deck, which is proving popular with brides-to-be, also opens in December. Mosaic October 27th, 2005, 11:04 AM Oh! I love this one. It's tall and glassy.
