thought id dedicate a thread to the next WORLDS TALLEST APARTMENT TOWER!
The Q1 Tower in Surfers Paradise, GC, QLD,Australia.
The 78storey 527 unit tower is modelled from Sydney's Olympic Torch.
The core has recently topped out at 240m. The enormous glass fin structure will start soon to reach 275m and then the spectacular 100m long spire will be attached to the front and will reach 322.5m high surpassing current tallest apartment tower in Dubai (269m 21StC tower)!
Its title as worlds tallest apartment tower will be sort lived as the 351m Eureka in Melbourne is set to top out later in year.

To roof, yes, but Q1 will be taller to structural tip (spire). However it looks like Eureka will be getting a spire too now, so Eureka may very well end up being the undisputed champion.

heh...i guess melbournians can't take the fact that eureka would never get to enjoy the world's tallest residential building title.

man, this sears/petronas roof/spire dispute's repeating itself over and over again. you can see it also in the swfc/taipei 101 dispute. personally, i still see eureka as a taller building since q1's spire's ultra cheap (don't get me wrong, q1's a cool building, even if i don't recognize as a wtr). i don't think eureka should add a cheap structure to its top just to beat q1's spire. it'll just ruin its look.

^ Q1 will top out at 322.5m to spire about mid year. Eureka in melbourne will now have a 50m mast on top which will bring height to 351m. so that will take over as worlds tallest resi. so Q1 will enjoy being worlds tallest for a few months! even without spire, Q1 is 275m which is heigher then any resi tower atm!

Spires and shit on top .. not for Architectural reasons, but to cheaply snatch the title of worlds tallest residential.

Makes me wish Dubai would announce a 500m Resi, that way Q1 and Eureka could either attach a radio mast on top, or get over the childish crap and treat the buildings with Architectural respect (ie remove the stupid spire from eureka.. and stop claiming Q1 is the tallest resi)

As a Vic, I dont mind Q1 at all, I think its a great achievement, and the amazing views from it and of it, from across the sea.

But business is business and ego's are inflatable.

Not sure Grollo pride was entirely at ease with handing over the tallest title to an "upstart" :)

it was interesting to hear about the basejumpers who took the lift up to look at the display (43rd flr) then ran up the rest of the floors and jumped off.. what a claim to fame!!

The cladding looks nothing like the renders. That puke green spandrel/glass combo is absolutelyu despised here (overuse). Great shape and height. What a shame about the cladding.

The below original render from the previous page shows that it was to be green and it has the reflections of the city lights @ night on it.

...but Sunland the developers had to cut down the reflectivity of the glass and ended up obviously using a glass that wasn't as reflective.

Atleast the spire isnt just stuck on the top. Its attached to front and only rises above the roof by half its length.

It do believe thats from Coolangatta.

Its on the south end of the Gold Coast urban area. The coast line makes a big curve (broken up by a few headlands etc, river), and then eventually faces north. This is taken from that area there.

Its a bigger and more powerful version of Piano's tower in Sydney. Very nice... especially considering its resi. Though Eureka still tops it for me!

Q1 doesn't sit on a 10 level carpark like Eureka does. its carpark is hidden underground.
Q1 is a beautifully proportioned skyscraper modelled from Sydney's Olympic torch. who really cares about how high its penthouse is? the fact is its taller then any residential tower in the world atm! and will be crowned WORLDS TALLEST within a few months. Even without the spire, its higher then any residential tower completed. the 110 tonne/97m spire is nearing its completion and the last segments will be hoisted up this week.!

Eureka will take Q1s WORLDS TALLEST title away next year when its completed. Its 50m communications mast might be included in its "official" height at 351m but if it isnt it will still be one of the worlds outstanding apartment blocks!

Have a close look at Aurora one day, the way it curves and flares out towards the top and the way the eastern and western acades wrap around each other is much more elegant. The facade of Q1 was supposed to look better (more the the first renders) but the decided that would be too expensive so they chose cheaper materials while Aurora used custom designed high tech glass which was basically
the best money could buy.

That is not to say that Q1 is bad, just that Aurora is a finely crafted building by one of the best architects in the world.

Of course Q1 looks more impressive because it is much taller.

Aurora just looks cooler anyways!

Honestly I think they should keep the spire the way it is now. Now, it perfectly fits the building...if they add another 30m the spire will simply be too tall.

^ it was originally 298m to tip which is 305m/1000ft above sea level ,which is height limit imposed by local Aviation Authority (CASA).But Sunland wanted to more impact so another 24m was added to design and was approved by council beause its just a spire. So now it will be 322.5m or 328m above sea level. planes have to keep an eye on it when passing.

So there is still 30m to go?!! From a distance the spire already looks huge enough, but from far away the fin is not very visible atm, so maybe when the glassing has finished it will look more proportional.

IMO the 30m extra spire won't looks too tall once the "fins" are fully cladded.

i think Q1 might go close. Eureka looks like finishing in early 2006 anyway.its official opening will be in march,2006.
who is Q1 up against in 2005?

Skyscraper of the year 2005 will be Turning Torso. Q1 looks great and is nice and tall but not a very innovative design. It is not even best in Australia for 2005, both 126 Phillip Street in Sydney and Yarras Edge 5 in Melbourne have much more interesting and innovative designs than Q1.

Q1 may not be the the best skyscraper of 2005,but it's definitely the best in Australia for that year!

i still think Q would be in top 3. what about catorgories like apartments, office, hotel ect. turning torso is apartments? maybe that can win best turning skyscraper of 2005.lol

in fact we have twin towers at the same stage of construction with a very similar design
it also is located at the beach

it's just that there are dozens of towers under c around it :D

..and there are already lots of talls constructed and heaps more u/c or about to start on The Oz Gold Coast too.

its a nice building, but it sticks out like dogs balls. in the future they should build it some 250-300m friends. personally i think it would look better in melbourne or sydney... but on the other hand the goaldcoast needs a few big ones.

^^^ It is gettings some 200m+ friends ;). Circle on Cavill complex and Soul to name a few. It won't stick out so much in a couple years I think, Gold Coast will finally have some quality towers with some nice height.
