The Langkawi Island lie in the Andaman sea , just 30 kilometers off the Kedah coast. There are 99 island in the Langkawi group most of which are uninhabited or sparsely populated. The largest and most developed island - known as Langkawi - is the focal point for most visitors. Traditionally the island have relied upon the farming and fishing industries for their livelihood, but in 1987 they were awarded Duty Free status, and the subsequent increase in visitors has promoted tourism to the point of being the islands largest industry.

THE LANGKAWI WAVES

Langkawi - 12 January 2005

New photos have come to light clearly showing how the December 26 Langkawi waves were changed by recent manmade coastal constructions.
The Langkawi waves, which arrived some hours after the tsunami waves hit Thailand, were cause by tsunami waves that passed well north of Malaysia.
The photos were taken by tourist Colin who was at the cablecar station on top of Mount Matchingchang at the time.

The first photo shows the waves coming in from a northerly direction and approaching Pantai Kok Bay.
The two manmade islands built outside the Telaga park Harbor are clearly visible.
In the background the islands that protected Pantai Tengah & Pantai Cenang are visible.

This zoom shot shows the waves changing shape as they reach shallower water and also shows a fifth smaller wave.
The short frequency (distance between waves shows these to be ordinary waves. Tsunami waves have a frequency of five kilometers or more.

Here the waves become less visible, but can be seen to be longer. The close part of the wave rushes past the manmade islands and is constricted and forced into the narrow channel of Pantai Kok Harbor.

This zoom shot shows the wave swirling inside the Yach Harbor where it damaged marina and yachts.

The second part of the waves can be seen becoming constricted between the seawall and the peninsula, increasing its force as it becomes narrower. This part of the wave caused damage in the fishing village of Kuala Teriang.

This was a very bad moment in the yacht basin and also the time the wave hit Kuala Teriang.

Langkawi was extremely fortunate to have recieved only these small waves, but they did ecxtensive damage to beachfront fisherman's village, with one eighty-year old person drowned and four people hospitalised.

The yachts in the harbor were ripped from their moorings and some were damaged as they hit the harbor walls.

At this point the main body of the waves crashed against the manmade seawall and lost their energy without mishap, except for the very southern tail of the waves that just passed the end of the seawall and reached the northern tip of Pantai Cenang beach.
The southern ends of the waves just reached the norther tip of the tourist beach at Pantai Cenang, where this fishing boat ended up deposited on the beach.

The traditional fishing boat is shown delivering guests safely from an island hopping trip soon after the wave. Boats at sea passed over the wave without damage.

Damage to the tourist beach was limited to some missing beach chairs, seawater in two beachfront swimming pools, and minor damage to the air conditioning units of a few beachfront bungalows at Pelangi Resort.

All damage was quickly repaired and the island is functioning normally.

BETWEEN 30 and 40 penguins may be sourced for a RM25mil project to feature three ecosystems at the Langkawi Underwater World by May next year.

American environmental consultant Frank S. Todd, better known as the ''penguin man,'' has been enlisted by Eden Enterprises (M) Bhd to help source the birds. Both the Langkawi Underwater World and Eden Enterprises are subsidiaries of the Eden Group of Companies.

“The major challenge for the project is acquiring the birds. However, a few hurdles have been overcome as I have located between 30 and 40 surplus penguins from different countries.

“They comprise tropical penguins of South American and South African origins – Humboldt, Black-footed and Magellanic – as well as the sub-Antarctic Rockhopper,” Todd said in Penang on Monday.

He said these figures may fluctuate according to their availability and changing market demand.

For every penguin available, there are usually 10 people who want it although one costs thousands of US dollars, said Todd, 60, who has spent 30 years in researching and writing about penguins.

The brainchild of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the project will involve the building of a new facility to complement the underwater world's existing complex.

The new one will display the Amazonian, sub-Antarctic and Antarctic ecosystems and house a three-dimensional (3D) theatre with a 200-seating capacity.

The project's consultant architect Dr Tan Boon Hock said the new facility was more complex to construct than building a hotel or office building.

“We are building a penguinarium, which comprises two penguin complexes, to house the birds.

“In one of the complexes, there will be an underwater tunnel for visitors to view swimming penguins and fishes.

“To make the penguin tunnel, believed to be Asia's first of its kind, we cannot use glass as it cannot be bent.

“Thus, we have to commission a China-based factory to manufacture and assemble acrylic panels for the tunnel and our other displays,” he said, adding that the project which started in April, was currently about 15% completed.

Underwater World Langkawi Sdn Bhd general manager Haji Tanzil Mohd Noor said apart from targeting tourists, the new double-storey building was also poised to become a world-class referral centre for marine life and penguins.

He said they would forge collaborations with academic institutions and other research organisations to encourage scientists to use the new facility with a 5,000 sq m built-up area.

Although penguins would be the new facility's main attraction, other animals may include anacondas, primates, sloths, capybaras, jays and macaws, he added.

Langkawi Legends & Folklore

Mahsuri was unjustly accused of adultery and the legend holds that Mahsuri's innocence became apparent at her execution as white blood flowed out of her chest after she was stabbed with a keris. In her dying breath she laid a curse on the island that it would hence forth not prosper for seven generations. Whether rooted in legend or fact, it has only been recently that Langkawi started to prosper again.
Decades after Mahsuri's death, Langkawi experienced a period of tribulation with her population dwindling in size. The island became a desolate place, beset by series of misfortunes. It was not able to regain its splendour for a long period of time.

Langkawi's Curved Bridge to Open Soon

Suspended about 700m above sea level at Gunung Mat Cincang, the island’s newest attraction will be opened next week.

The RM2.45mil bridge, which is the country’s first curved suspended pedestrian bridge, is suspended from a record-breaking 82m-high single pylon.

The project’s master planner and designer Dr Peter A. Wyss said the 125m-long bridge was believed to be one of the world’s longest curved pedestrian bridges.

“Some 100 workers took about a year to complete the bridge last October after it was approved by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in February 2003,” he said recently.

Dr Wyss, 60, said the curved bridge intersected a dramatic geological chasm up to 100m above ground, giving visitors a unique experience.

“The view from the bridge is simply breathtaking. Visitors would be able to view the Andaman Sea and Thailand’s Tarutao Island as well,” said Dr Wyss who is from the Penang-based Wyss Planning Consultant Sdn Bhd.

Dr Wyss, who also designed the RM40mil cable car project located several metres away from the bridge, said the 1.8m-wide bridge had two 3.6m-wide triangular platforms that provided a spectacular viewing-cum-resting area for visitors.

“In contrast to a straight bridge, where you can see its end from the starting point, the curved bridge offers changing perspectives as one proceeds along it,” he said.

“The most difficult task was installing the prefabricated part of the bridge with the use of a Russian Kamov helicopter, which has a carrying capacity of 4.5 tonnes,” he said.

Dr Wyss said local contractor Alam Langkawi Sdn Bhd constructed the bridge, while the materials were prefabricated at a factory in Butterworth.

Among the safety features on the bridge, he said, were double-steel railing on the upper body level and an enclosed wire mesh as well as a timber parapet below.

S Korea Keen to Launch Seoul-Langkawi Flight

KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 Asia Pulse - South Korea has expressed interest to launch a Seoul-Langkawi flight by Korean Air, Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) General Manager Kamarulzaman Abdul Ghani said Thursday.

The airline might start a weekly service that could progress to thrice-weekly flights, he said, adding that this was indicated at talks held in the Malaysia's premiere tourists island on Wednesday with the Korean carrier.

Kamarulzaman said 11 million South Koreans travelled abroad annually but only 200,000 visited Malaysia, of which 8,000 came to Langkawi.

"The proposed direct flight is expected to increase the number of visitors from South Korea, and Lada will collaborate with other agencies to hold promotions in that country," he told reporters, in Langkawi, more than 500 km north of here.

Kamarulzaman also called on Malaysia Airlines to reconsider its decision to cut the London-Langkawi-KLIA flight as part of the national carrier's turnaround plan, saying it could jeopardise arrival of visitors from European countries to the resort island.

"We should look ahead because the tourist market in European countries is important to Malaysia," he said.

AirAsia To Launch Bangkok-Langkawi Service

LANGKAWI, May 17 (Bernama) -- AirAsia will offer direct flights between Bangkok and Langkawi soon, Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said.

He said Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid had agreed to allow the low-cost carrier to offer the service after a meeting with the AirAsia management recently.

AirAsia was expected to be operate three flights per week for the route to enable foreign tourists in Bangkok to come to Langkawi directly, he said.

"We hope AirAsia will also offer Medan-Langkawi or Aceh-Langkawi service in the future," he told reporters after meeting tour operators and local community leaders here last night.

THOSE looking for a healthy and relaxing getaway can look forward to the country's first yoga-spa retreat in Langkawi.

The new concept resort is set to cost Yoga Zone, a yoga club chain respon-sible for introducing hot yoga in Ma-laysia, about RM6mil to develop.

Yoga Zone founder and chief executive officer Tjhin Chee Kung said the club had identified a site overlooking the padi fields near Makam Mahsuri as a suitable location.

“The project will kick off the latest end of next year,” he said after visiting Yoga Club@Tanjung Tokong, Yoga Zone’s first centre outside Kuala Lum-pur.

Set up in 2002, Yoga Zone currently has four outlets in the country.

The club’s two new outlets in Sri Pe-taling and Puchong would be ready by August and Tjhin said he planned to open another outlet in Penang by the end of the year.

Apart from the outlets in the country, Yoga Zone is now refurbishing a 30-room chalet in Bali to turn it into a yoga-spa retreat at a cost of about RM1mil.

Yoga Club@Tanjung Tokong opened its doors two weeks ago and has since seen a registration of more than 200.

The club has four studios and a lounge and 10 professional instructors will provide a wide range of yoga and Pilates classes.

“Classes start from 7am until late evening and we have scheduled more than 100 classes weekly.

“Ultimately, yoga is more than just about looking good. People come back because it makes them feel good,” Tjhin said.

The Penang outlet’s grand opening ceremony will be held on July 1.

Those interested can visit the centre at No. 2, 1st Floor, Jalan Pantai Molek, on July 1 and 2 from 11am to 6pm to check out the facility and special packages.

Been there many times, yet it's splendour hasn't fade away.. never fails to leave me in awe everytime i visit the islands. If any of you plan to visit this enchanting island, i recommend you to take a boat ride to Pulau Bras Basah (Wet Rice Island) just offshore of the main island of Langkawi. Once you get there u'll be fascinated with its beach-white sands, blue sea, its peaceful atmosphere; perfect spot to relax, enjoy the untouched-scenery while sunbathing i suppose? I have a few relatives living in Langkawi, since my family originates from the northern state of Kedah, where Langkawi is a part of its district. Its a perfect place to spend ur holiday!

Foreign Airlines Keen To Fly To Langkawi

LANGKAWI, Jan 3 (Bernama) -- Many foreign airlines are keen to fly to Malaysia's premier tourist island of Langkawi for the Visit Malaysia Year 2007 an official said Wednesday.

"We are in the midst of discussion with several foreign airlines (who are keen to fly here). It will become a reality soon," Langkawi International Airport manager Mustafa Idris to Bernama.

He said nearly one million tourists were expected to visit Langkawi island this year compared with 923,889 last year.

Yesterday, 416 Russian tourists who arrived here were given a rousing welcome at the airport by local residents and tourism and other officials.

AirAsia Start Flying From Bangkok To Langkawi

LANGKAWI, Jan 6 (Bernama) -- Budget carrier AirAsia Saturday made its maiden flight from Bangkok to Langkawi with 90 passengers on board.

The Boeing 737-300 jetliner landed at the Langkawi International Airport at 5.05pm.

The 90 passengers and crew were given a rousing welcome by travel and tour agents.

The welcoming ceremony was organised by the Malaysian Travel and Tour Association (Matta), Langkawi Tourist Association (LTA) and the Hotel Association of Malaysia (Kedah branch).

AirAsia will operate three flights a week -- on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday -- between the two destinations.

The flight will depart from Bangkok at 3.30pm and arrive in Langkawi at 5.05pm. It will depart from Langkawi at 5.30pm and arrive in Bangkok at 7.05pm on the same day.

AS a geo-tourist, Unesco Geoparks Initiative coordinator Dr Margarete Patzak is excited about Langkawi.

She said Langkawi has many interesting and unique attractions including the rugged landscape.

“It is not boring. It is appealing. It is very exciting.

“But to ascertain if Langkawi meets the criteria (to be endorsed as Unesco geopark), we have to rely on the experts,” she told a press conference at the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) premises in Langkawi recently.

Dr Patzak was one of the three panel members of Unesco assessors who were on a four-day trip to Langkawi to ascertain if the archipelago met the criteria to be Unesco National Geopark. The team left Langkawi yesterday.

The two other panel members were Geological Survey of Northern Ireland principal geologist Dr Patrick McKeever and Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences chairman Prof Zhao Xun.

Lada and the state government are lobbying for Langkawi to be included in the global network of Unesco National Geoparks.

A geopark is an area with significant geological heritage. So far, 48 areas in 15 countries have been included in the global network of Unesco National Geoparks.

Asked if Langkawi fulfilled the required criteria, Dr Patzak said the panel members had not dis-cussed the details.

“We can’t assess immediately. We have to prepare the report. We have to do our own homework.

“Certainly we will provide the answer by the end of this year,” she said, adding that the panel was keeping its initial assessment a secret so as not to disappoint or raise hopes.

The state government endorsed the rebranding of Langkawi as a National Geopark in May last year.

Langkawi Declared A Geopark By Unesco

KULIM, June 7 (Bernama) -- Langkawi, a cluster of 99 islands covering an area of 10,000 hectares, has been declared a geopark by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) effective Friday.

Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said that with the recognition, Langkawi joined the Global Geoparks network of 52 geoparks worldwide.

"This official recognition by Unesco will enhance Langkawi's image as a world class tourist destination," he told reporters after opening Fuji Electric (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd's second factory at the Kulim High Technology Park here today.

Mahdzir said Langkawi had applied to join the Unesco's Geopark network in May last year and it was the first geopark in Malaysia and South East Asia to gain such a recognition.

He thanked Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), the Mineral and Geoscience Department, Forestry Department, Environment Department and the Langkawi District Office and all other parties that had contributed to the island getting the recognition.

Langkawi Lagenda Park was officially opened to public on the 27th April 1996. The park, which covers an area of 50 acres is built on reclaimed land and costs approximately RM 37 million. Within the park, you can also find some fine examples of traditional Malaysian handicraft and cultural objects.

It is located near the Kuah jetty. If you have limited time to cover all Langkawi's historic sites, Langkawi Lagenda Park is the best place for you to visit as you'll find all the famous legends and myths on display. If walking is too tiring for you, you can just hire a buggy. This park is also an excellent picnic spot, so don't forget to bring along a picnic basket.

This beautiful park is an open-air garden museum that highlights the many myths and legends of Langkawi including the legends of heroic giants, mythical birds, evil ogres and beautiful princesses.

Kuah is a town and district capital of Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia. It is the landing point for ferries from mainland Peninsular Malaysia. The giant monument of an eagle which is the symbol of Langkawi is in Kuah.

Langkawi has a multi-racial society with estimated population at about 60,000.There are 3 main races in Langkawi. The Malay, who are Muslims, form the majority of Langkawi population (90%). The other 2 main racial groups are Chinese, who are mostly Buddhist and the Indians who are mainly Hindus, others who make up the population including Thais, Eurasian and foreigner who decided to make Langkawi as their homes.

LANGUAGE

Langkawian people speak Bahasa Malaysia and those originating from Thailand speak fluent Thai. English is widely accepted and understood by the younger generation and Chinese dialects are concentrated in the Kuah commercial centre.

More Russian Tourists Expected In Langkawi

LANGKAWI, Sept 20 (Bernama) -- More chartered flights are expected to be mounted to bring in Russian tourists to Langkawi.

To this end, Langkawi Tourism Association deputy president Pishol Ishak said discussions would be held with Russian airlines during a four-day tourism promotional tour to that country beginning Tuesday.

The aim was to attract 2,000 Russians to visit Langkawi from January onwards, he told reporters here today.

Langkawi Development Authority statistics showed that 1,309 Russians came to Langkawi in the first seven months of this year.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

According to Malay legend, Mahsuri was a young woman from the island of Langkawi in Malaysia who was accused of adultery and executed by stabbing. Her tomb, Makam Mahsuri, in Langkawi, has become a tourist attraction on the island.

The story of Mahsuri

During the time of the powerful Sultanates of the Malay archipelago there lived a young woman named Mahsuri. She was the most beautiful woman in all of Langkawi, and the wife of Wan Darus, a brave warrior. As was required of him, her husband had to go to war, leaving Mahsuri behind to fend for herself. It was during this time that Mahsuri befriended a young man named Deraman.

Their close friendship lead others in her village to believe that their relationship was sexual in nature. Some versions of the legend claim that the parties who perpetuated the gossip were those who were envious of Mahsuri's beauty. Eventually the rumours grew strong enough that the villagers openly accused her of adultery. Mahsuri pleaded her innocence, but no one believed her.

Following the old Islamic punishment for adultery, Mahsuri was to be tied to a tree (or pole) and stabbed to death. When they stabbed her, white blood flowed from her wound, signifying her innocence. With her dying breath, Mahsuri cursed Langkawi to have seven generations of bad luck.

Seven Wells waterfall Langkawi
Locally known as Telaga Tujuh - Seven Wells, this is a geological marvel. It is a spot where a freshwater stream cascades about 90 meters down via a series of seven pools, hence its name. Visiting the pools, especially the top one, will definitely bring excitement besides seeing greenery and enjoying cooling surroundings. Adding a mystical touch to the natural splendor is the lush green forest that surrounds it. Legend has it that fairies used to come down to frolic and bathe.
