The Peninsula - 30/01/2005
DOHA: The Middle East region's largest spa and a high-end luxury resort that reflects a traditional Qatari village will welcome guests from mid-2006. The QR 195mn project, entitled the Al Sharq Village and Spa is being developed by the Qatar National Hotels Co and is expected to open in the second quarter of 2006, just on time for the Asian Games that Doha hosts later that year.
The contract to build the resort and spa was signed between QNHC and Arab Engineering Bureau on Thursday. The QNHC chairman, Sheikh Nawaf bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani awarded the contract at a ceremony held at the company's headquarters here. The ceremony was also attended by Jurgen Baumhoff, chief executive officer, QNHC and senior officials from the AEB. The resort will be located in the vicinity of the Doha Club and will face the seafront and will be just a five minute drive away from the Doha International Airport.
Speaking to the media, Sheikh Nawaf disclosed that the Al Sharq Village and Spa will feature some 160 rooms and suites. These include 116 King rooms, 33 Twin rooms, eight King suites, two Speciality suites and one Presidential suite, located in 13 buildings inside the village complex. In addition, the resort will also offer an all-day dining restaurant, a café, a cigars bar and diwan, a pool bar, a snack bar and a fish market restaurant. The spa, which will measure some 5,200sqm and is said to be the largest in this region, will be managed by Thailand's renowned group, Six Senses. Sheikh Nawaf said that the resort and spa will be in the Five Star Deluxe category but priced competitively for guests. The resort will have a total of 19 buildings and will also offer special attractions such as a traditional Qatari souq.
Hotel and Spa to resemble old village
DOHA: The Al Sharq Village and Spa, when opened in 2006, is expected to set a new benchmark for Qatar's hospitality industry. The 160-room hotel and spa is being developed by the Qatar National Hotels Co as an unique "boutique" five star resort that blends traditional architecture with modern amenities.
Speaking to reporters, Sheikh Nawaf bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani, chairman, QNHC, said, the Al Sharq Village and Spa has been designed to recreate a traditional and ancient Qatari village. The resort will feature old lanes (sikkas) and pathways, through which guests will walk to reach their rooms or the spa.
The main building will house the reception and the main lobby that will be have traditional Arabic inspired interiors, lounges overlooking the pool area and a majestic view of the sea.
The all-day dining restaurant will accommodate up to 100 people and will also feature traditional Arab interiors and an overlooking view of the pool area and the sea.
The cigar bar will be designed in a grand, luxurious colonial style interior where guests can enjoy some of the most famous cigars from Cuba while listening to piano music. The cigar bar will also feature a walk-in humidor, said to be the first such in Qatar, where customers will be able to choose their cigar brand. The main building will also have shops which will be designed to resemble the ancient Qatari souqs.
Guests walking from the main building to guestrooms will experience being in an old village as they will walk through a maze of paved paths, a cluster of buildings and landscaped surroundings. Water features in different areas of the resort will give a focal point and will guide guests to the areas in the complex.
The interior design of the Al Sharq Village and Spa is being done by DiLeonardo International and the service staff uniform will be personalised to resemble traditional attire while the level of service will portray the friendliness and welcoming of the Qatari people.
The spa will be operated by the leading Thai group, Six Senses Spas. The architecture of the spa will not be modern and linear but like a true Middle Eastern village that has grown organically over time, with winding streets and 23 treatment rooms resembling village houses.

Construction work was launched early this year on a major luxury holiday resort being developed by Qatar National Hotels Company in Doha’s Ras Abu Aboud area.
Known as the Al Sharq Village and Spa, this unique “boutique” luxury five-star resort sprawls over a 82,165 sq m plot between Doha Club and Doha Marriott Gulf Hotel, says Ibrahim M Jaidah, managing director of Arab Engineering Bureau, which carried out its design.
Blending traditional architecture and modern facilities in a unique Qatari village style of architecture, the resort will include 160 luxury rooms, a Six Senses spa, traditional Qatari suqs and a food, beverage and entertainment area, he adds.
The complex, with a total built-up area of 37,170 sq m, will comprise a main building housing the reception area, ballroom, function rooms, restaurant, cafe and some shops. Guestroom buildings are spread around the site with amenities such as a swimming pool, snack bar, specialty restaurant, and the spa, all located within the complex.
The buildings rest on a raft foundation while a special finish will be used to ensure that each traditionally-styled structure appears to be an intrinsic part of an old Qatari village.
Work started in early January under a QR195 million contract ($53.6 million), which will due for completion by June next year.
Arab Engineering Bureau (AEB) is the architectural and structural consultant on the project while DiLeonardo International is responsible for the interior design and Al Khatib & Cracknell is handling the designs for the landscaping.

Sheikh Nawaf bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani seen with the delegation from the Ritz-Carlton Hotels Company.
DOHA: The Ritz-Carlton Hotels Company has expressed strong interest in operating the Al Sharq Spa and Village, the flagship project of the Qatar National Hotels Company.
The issue was discussed during a meeting between QNHC chairman Sheikh Nawaf bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani and a visiting delegation from the Ritz Carlton Hotels Company recently.
The delegation comprised Simon Cooper, president and COO of the company and its senior vice president, international Bob Kharazmi.
Sheikh Nawaf discussed with the delegation the possibility of various opportunities to work with Ritz Carlton across the globe, including management of the Sharq Village and Spa. This unique Qatari village blends traditional architecture with modern facilities, with the ambience of a real Qatari village.
Cooper expressed a strong interest in operating this facility and now both companies are working on the details of the agreement, according to a press release issued yesterday.

The site is wrong i think, but if you look into the future in 2009 or 2010, the airport will be gone (transformed into a business, commericial area, and the new airport highway will be in the same location. But, the site is small. They should build it in Wakra or Messaid.

Looool, not just that. The problem is that this site was pretty famous for tourists who came to Qatar in the past, I am talkin' about the 60s and the 70s. So, what they should've done is a mere development and some services and it would've been perfect. I actually used to go there every weekend when I was in high school in Doha.

I found both, the project & the location, are perfect. the spa is exactly what kind of touristic establishments qatar lacks. as for the location, the surrounding area will be changed drastically once the new airport is finished.
on a second thought, i was hoping that the project was built in the desert as a desert resort, just like al-areen resort in bahrain. come to think of it, we already have clean, enough land space & dry fresh air, so it'll be an ideal desert resort, especially that qataris like camping in the desert in winter.
as for the gentleman who suggested that the project should be built in either musaieed or wakrah, i'd highly agree on/and support that. the development, mainly in the tourism & commecial field, should not be concentrated in the capital itself, and one of the benefits of such a move w'd be the stopping the reverse immigration @ the moment.
hope this new spa w'd have some good, licensed & skilled masseurs, my back is killing me from the lousy unprofessional masseurs @ doha's men saloons.

lool! A little off topic, but did you know a Qatari boy died a year ago because one of these masseurs cracked a vein in his neck... :runaway:
I totally agree with what you said about the project. They should build an eco resort in somewhere near 3deid, but not something too fancy to spoil the beauty of it.

Sharq Village & Spa opens in late 2006 as a Ritz-Carlton
Qatar kept the accent on luxury at the Arabian Travel Market trade show in Dubai this week with the announcement that Ritz-Carlton is to operate the new Sharq Village & Spa in Doha.
The Sharq Village & Spa is set to be a new local landmark in Doha when it opens later this year, just before the Asian Games.
Cleverly designed to resemble an ancient desert village while offering every modern convenience to the highest standards of luxury, Sharq Village & Spa is a novel addition to the facilities of Doha. The streets and lanes of Sharq will create a historic sense of place with roaming entertainers playing Arabic music, performing folk dances and reciting poetry.
There will also be a seafood restaurant with freshly caught fish and an international restaurant, plus two strikingly designed swimming pools and a Six Senses spa in the style of a Qatari souq. At the same time wireless Internet access will be available throughout the $110 million hotel which will have only 174 rooms and suites furnished to the most lavish standards.

Actually, this project is situated in the wrong place. It is right at the foot of the runway to Doha Airport, and lies between Doha Club and Oasis Hotel, a 3-star hotel. The area is small, too, and expansion is not possible since the land is right. I don't feel this resort compares to Dubai.

Offcourse the project is in the wrong area. Whats wrong with you, dont you know this is Qatar were talking about !! We cant plan anything right !! Its impossible. Even if we have something that we spend millions of dollars on designing it and then hire consultants to make sure its perfect we still screw it up. Coz we have this special secret committee that sits there, takes perfect plans, try to be creative with it, and in the the process screw it all up. 5 years later when the project is done.. they say "oops, blame someone else !!"

Sharq Village & Spa, managed by The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, opens in Doha, Qatar, late 2006. The design of the 174 rooms and suites, with intimate courtyard settings, reflects 6,000 years of deeply rooted Qatari heritage and tradition. The waterfront property will be unique in The Middle East for its authentic recreation of life in an ancient desert village, including a 71,500 square foot Six Senses spa in the style of a Qatari souq or bazaar.
"Qatar is well known for its impressive buildings with contemporary architecture. In a novel contrast, Sharq Village & Spa will stand out as a memorable experience for visitors seeking a destination resort with an exceptional "sense of place" and historic accents," said Simon F. Cooper, president and chief operating officer of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. This will be the second Ritz-Carlton property in Doha, Qatar.
Visitors exploring the streets and lanes of Sharq Village & Spa will be transported in time to an era when traders and craftsmen shaped their own lifestyle and traditions. Roaming entertainers playing Arabian music, performing colorful folk dances, creating intricate weaving, and reciting inspirational poetry will add flavor to the guest experience and memories. Fishermen and pearl divers will display the skills of their ancestors along the expansive beachfront of the resort. The Six Senses Spa, housed in a recreated souq atmosphere, will include a choice of treatment rooms and a menu of services inspired by centuries old recipes of fragrant oils and exotic spices.
Recreational features at Sharq Village & Spa also include two strikingly designed swimming pools and the close proximity of championship caliber golf course. Freshly caught seafood selected from the Village fish market, and a restaurant with international menus, will make dining as enjoyable as experiencing the sights and sounds of the resort. Guests can consult the concierge to plan other activities.
While the ambience and atmosphere of Sharq Village & Spa recreates and celebrates the past, the resort will be fully equipped to meet the needs and expectations of today's business traveler, with wireless capability throughout the village....
Anyone have the latest progress of the building..... :)

Five-star luxury resort set to open in December

A view of the Sharq Spa Resort which is due to open on December 21
By Rohit William Wadhwaney
THE Sharq Village and Spa, a five-star luxury resort, is all set to open "on or around December 21," sources said.
Home to one of the largest spas in the Middle East and 174 rooms for high-end travellers, the Sharq Village and Spa is situated between the Doha Club, which is due to shut down on December 20 to give way to a yacht club, and the Oasis Beach Resort.
An official of the The Sharq Village and Spa, told Gulf Times: "As of now, the opening date is December 21."
In fact, the Qatar National Hotel Company (QNHC)-owned spa resort, which will be managed by the Ritz-Cartlon Doha, has already started taking bookings from its opening date.
The official said the cheapest room at the resort would cost QR2,824, while the most expensive ‘available’ room – the King Suite – was for a whopping QR7,062 a night, making the Sharq Village and Spa arguably one of the most expensive five-star hotels in the country.
The official added the deluxe sea view rooms at the resort were quoted for QR3,060 per night.
However, he informed that all ‘entertainment facilities’ at the sprawling 98,000sq m property will not be ready by the scheduled December 21-opening. "It will be a soft-opening," he said, adding, "if you want to enjoy all facilities at the resort, they should be ready by the fag end of December 2006."
But the spa, a 23-treatment-room facility, managed by Thailand’s Six Senses Spas, that will include saunas, steam rooms, jacuzzis, plunge pools, fitness rooms and dedicated areas for yoga, meditation and Tai Chi, will be ready by the time the resort opens, the official said.
Once officially opened, the ‘elegant’ five-star property will offer "ultra-modern luxury in surroundings characterised by authentic Gulf architecture."
According to the QNHC website, "every aspect of Sharq Village & Spa has been designed so that it truly recreates the past way of Qatari life."
Sources said the resort’s 174-rooms, including Deluxe, Ambassador, Executive and Presidential Suites, are designed in traditional Qatari houses’ style. The shops located just off the lobby are designed to resemble a Qatari souq.
"Walking from the lobby to the guest rooms is like walking in an old Qatari village," a source said.
That’s for the traditional look. Now check the ultra-modern amenities: The courtyards of the resort have ‘electronically retractable roofs’, so the roof can be opened or closed according to the weather situation.
The still under-construction presidential suite will have its own swimming pool and "could probably accommodate a complete delegation". Once ready, the most expensive room at the resort will cost QR60,000 a night.
The resort will have "at least five restaurants", including a three-level fish market seafood place, which "will serve fresh local fish."
There will be The Cigar Bar, designed in grand colonial style interiors, which will house "the most famous Cuban cigars". The Cigar Bar will also have a walk-in humidifier, a first in Qatar.

So, not all entertainment will open by December 21, they will open December 30, one week later? One thing I hate about Qatari press is the terms they use "fag" end?? Come one, couldn't they think of a better word? LoL!

Maybe it is administration delay ... such as staff ... or decoration such as furniture ... or technical such as telecoms ...
it is a hotel Halawala ... many factors involved ... I think the problem is not the delay but announcing the wrong Date .... :)

I went down there yesterday for a look around. I forgot my camera, sorry.
It's very impressive, esp. around the pool and beach area. I also was taken on a tour of the spa, which was great. The rooftop shisha lounge is going to be my new hang out, it's quality.
The whole place was close to being finished, but according to the staff they are still lacking some of the items they need to complete the whole place. I couldn't believe how helpful the staff were, this bodes well for my other comments in other posts about customer service!
It's currently in soft launch phase, but will offically open on the 16th March - Apparently.

Sharq Village & Spa opens a USD450 million luxury resort in Doha
Sharq Village & Spa, operated by The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company B.V., opened its doors in Qatar in the first quarter of 2007.
http://www.ameinfo.com/images/news/8/37958-ritz.jpg
Sharq Village & Spa.
The resort, located in the area known as 'Sharq' or the Orient, is inspired by traditional Qatari culture and architecture.
'Qatar is well known for its impressive buildings with contemporary architecture. In a novel contrast, Sharq Village & Spa will stand out as a memorable experience for visitors seeking a destination resort with an exceptional 'sense of place' and historic accents,' said Abdul Aziz Al Emadi, General Manager of Sharq Village & Spa. This will be the second Ritz-Carlton property in Doha, Qatar.
Designed to reflect the close-knit communities of fishermen, pearl divers and merchants that shaped Qatar's vibrant history, Sharq Village & Spa is also equipped with modern facilities and amenities to meet the requirements of international leisure and business travellers.
Honouring the true sense of a traditional Qatari home, Sharq Hotel & Spa houses 174 beits (rooms). Each of which is decorated with intricately designed furniture, hand-made carpets, vibrant velvets and silk embellishments.
The courtyard beits reflect the legacy of Qatar's old trade routes - Qatari chests, lanterns, and furniture surround a hand made wooden four-poster bed in a room with ornate arches, glowing recesses and wooden ceilings.
Rooms are lavishly decorated with authentic copper, inlaid brass, and hand-woven carpets, providing a restive and private Qatari-style sanctuary, whilst still offering the most modern luxury amenities, such as deep soaking tubs, separate walk-in rainforest showers, private balconies, and state-of-art technology including wall mounted flat-screen LCD televisions and both hi-speed wireless and cabled data connections.
The hotel exterior resembles that of an elegantly marbled sheikh's palace, and the interior is no less regal with crystal-draped chandeliers hanging from the towering arched ceilings. The lobby houses Qatar's only indoor souq where one can purchase everything from luxury designer wear to traditional Arabic ornaments
Sharq Village & Spa is also home to over 12,150 sq. ft /1,130 sq. m of conferencing space split among two ballrooms, a board room and one grand reception foyer. All facilities are furnished with the most sophisticated technology to suit all business and conferencing needs and can receive up to a total of 950 reception guests.
The resort envelopes cooling pools, fountains, lush gardens and intimate courtyards; wandering through the streets and courtyard homes, guests will encounter a symphony of flavors and aromas of times past. Sharq Village & Spa offers some of the most unique and imaginative dining experiences in Doha. Each venue showcases exquisite culinary creations that blend into the rich ambiance of the ancient Qatari village complimented by impeccable service and comfort. Diners can choose to indulge their passion for food on the ample rooftop or terrace seating amongst lush tropical foliage or indoors, the village restaurants are comfortably positioned to offer the most breathtaking views and guarantees exceptional dining experiences, while the signature seafood restaurant Al Mahara at the water's edge offers the very best from the sea.
The four spa villages that make up the 6,500 square metre area of the Six Senses Spa are connected by a labyrinth of waving pathways, cascading fountains and lush greenery to tempt the senses into utter escape. The 23 treatment rooms are fashioned on a traditional Qatari environment resembling typical village houses with heated stone massage beds, mud baths, fully equipped gym, private majlis areas and several quiet reflective meditation rooms. With an endless assortment of treatments from traditional Arabian, Thai and Swedish therapies to the more holistic offerings of naturopathy and specialist visiting practitioners - guests could experience a new treatment every day for an entire month.
The legendary Qatari hospitality is as alive today as it was in the past, and while Sharq Village & Spa recreates and celebrates Qatar's long-standing traditions, it still caters for the needs of today's sophisticated traveller.

I just went there yesterday, and I had dinner with my family and some friends. It is certainly one of the best resorts I have been to, and the food was excellent and the service also was good. The suites and rooms are out of their world. The spa is also very good, but the prices for the spa treatments are certainly over-exaggerated. But, I found the whole resort to be five star or even more.

Sharq Village & Spa becomes Qatar's most opulent address
Qatar National Hotels Company (QNH) has announced the opening of Sharq Village & Spa, a luxury hotel located in Doha, Qatar, with several notable attributes to its credit.
The colossal resort, managed by The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company BV, is one of the largest in the Middle East, and the first to showcase Qatari culture and traditions. Located within are two other landmarks - the largest Six Senses Spa in the world, and the only indoor souq in Qatar.
QNH chairman Sheikh Nawaf Bin Jassim Bin Jabor Al Thani formally announced the opening at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), saying that it was fitting for the indigenous property to be premiered at the region's largest hospitality event.
