Hi fellas, hope you're all cool. Sorry been away for a while, due to travelling and being busy with family and study. Well, I'll be taking pics of some buildings in bahrain later on maybe in the next week and a half and uploading them later. BTW, Merry Xmas to all who celebrate it. Anyways, here is good news for qatar, no rendering though, enjoy:


Qatar National Bank (QNB) has signed a $125m term loan facility deal to finance the construction of the tallest building in Qatar and a state-of-the-art gymnasium, said a report.

The 232-metre-high 'Doha High-rise Office Building', a 44-storey cylindrical complex, has been designed by French architect Jean Nouvel.

This project will be a new landmark for the city, said a top official.

The building, owned by Shaikh Saoud bin Mohamed Al Thani, is situated in the 'New Doha' area near the Sheraton Hotel, will have a unique architectural design and feature several panoramic lifts.

The building is expected to be completed in February 2007.

"Today's deal reflects QNB's ongoing strategy to invest in the country's growing property market," said Vince Cook, general manager corporate banking and capital markets, who signed the deal on behalf of QNB.

"QNB now holds Qatar's largest share in property financing with more than 70 per cent of the new projects being undertaken by Qatari private sector," he said in remarks published in the Peninsula newspaper.

Hamad Al Duhaimi signed the deal on behalf of Shaikh Saoud bin Mohamed Al Thani.

He said QNB's loan will be used to fund all construction phases.

"We noted that QNB was actively engaged in many projects that are changing Doha's skyline and this particular project will create an impressive new beacon heralding our rapid expansion.

"We consider QNB as a partner in this ambitious project and not just a financer.

"I'm sure that by the end of this decade, a new, dynamic image will have significantly evolved," he added.

This is fantastic news. Qatar desperately needs to shake off its 'dullest city in the Gulf' tag and new developments like this should make Doha more interesting. Doha needs a 100 new developments like this. It sure has the money to do it.

Anyways i did have some pics of this project posted somewhere. Cant remeber where. Its being built by a very famous architecut, i forgot his name, but he is building a similiar tower in Spain.

It will be a great addition in the skyline. If this is the actual location then ground work has begun already.

They really shouldn't build such a high tower so close to the corniche - that's poor planning. It should really be placed a block away from it.

it's the one that looks like torre agbar in barcelona, it's nice but doesn't fit in the surroundings unless they make somethin about it, and qatar4ever, ya the cornish, haha oh well.

You guys guess what ? This morning, driving to work, the finally posted a rendering of this huge project they are doing right outside our 16-floor office. Its this tower, i can perfectly see how it will come about. Ill post some pics of the foundation work.

Yup, its approved. It will definitely get built, and this is the basic design but variations might exist. source: gulfconstructionworldwide.com.

The Doha high rise tower is cylindrical and measures about 45m in diameter. It is capped by a dome and topped by a lightning conductor at 231,50m. The structure is of steel and concrete on a lozenge grid bending upon the virtual surface of the cylinder. The façade is composed of a double cladding. The exterior which evokes the geometric complexity of the oriental moucharabieh and acts as main solar protection is composed of four " butterfly" aluminium elements of different scales. Its overall pattern is different according to orientations and needs for different protection: 25% towards north, 40% towards south, 60% on east and west. The inside layer is a slightly reflective glass skin to complement solar protection. Last a system of roller-blinds can be used if needed.

Each floor is offered panoramic views towards the Gulf on the east, the port on the south, the city on the west, the coast and the desert on the north.
The tower is accessed through a planted garden sloping gently towards the large lobby under a glass canopy surrounding the building, suggesting that the tower is deeply rooted in earth. Vegetation and glass canopy overlap so as to blur the limits between nature and man made environment. A huge atrium rises up to level 27 at 112m high. Tall and slim, glittering in its silvery laced silhouette against the skyline, the tower is bound to become a fine landmark on the Doha Corniche.

Yes , the excavation works already began several months ago .. and I think they are working in foundation now :)

I was looking at the foundation work of this building today from my office. They started work before Feb. of this year. U know how far they got !! They dog a big hole half the time, then they buried it, and now theyre building a new bigger hole. Lets not mention the 5 story high sand pile theyve created. If it was dubai the building would of been built by now !

Yes that's right, its official name is 'Doha High Rise Office Building", would be cool to change the title for there are at least 2 other Burj Qatar ;)

Actually, i found out that Torre Agbar is from Jean Nouvel during an expo, and at first i thought they made a mistake.. i told the conference guy that it was a project of him in Qatar, he told me no, and i was about to argue with him for i was sure!! Confusing isnt it? :D

But, this tower is much larger and better than the one in Spain.

I have to say that even though there is an uncanning resemblance to the two towers in spain and london, I think the facade (pattern) will give it a beautiful touch, although it might not be shown properly in the pictures, but when its done and at 230m high, it will give it a very unique look.

I think the same way you do Halawala, I believe this building will look good! And like you said Gulfexpress, the facace sounds very promising! Jean Nouvel can be especially good at this patterns/texture thing, his works at the Arab World Institute in Paris or the court in Nantes are wonderful!

One thing I like about this tower is the type of support its getting. From the exterior the concrete structure cris-crosses the whole tower. Do you know those big apples you buy from the market--the genetically modified apples? Well, usually, you will have a styrofoam pocket that wraps each apple. The concrete columns resemble those styrofoam pockets.

You are right, it was called Doha Office Tower; then, the tower was changed to Burj Qatar, and we don't know what the final name will be. Until then, its called Burj Qatar.

In reality, it looks huge from ground level--which is strange since most towers look tiny when they are at ground level. But, the thing is it is sooo slow since the construction method is very difficult to do.

Guys I work on the top floor of one the salam towers and have an amazing view from my office window of all these constructions sites.. Of course it's soooo slow....they need all of the concrete produced in Qatar to make just one of the columns lol...they're huge!

Thanks I pass next to this tower twice a day and I had never noticed the sample glass..hehe! It looks amazing!

yes its gonna be scare when complete. coz they put one big antenna top of the building. which is very tall. and this is the first type of antenna place on this building.

Slowly but surely

after the finish of 44th floor, they will one tall antenaa, which gonna look scary building in the sky line of doha, amazing, i am wait for the completion of this building.

why would this building look scary ??? its cool...

i know its cool, but scary means it take good impact on the skyline of doha between the hundreds tower build on the cornish, but burj qatar look different when complete

Love-Qatar wonderful photo! I know its hard to take a shot while driving, but thanks for the update; the glass looks wonderful, and dont forget that they are going to add metal mesh to it making it truly an architectural masterpiece!

The building is up to the 40th floor, which means it's almost close to topping out. But if they have placed a sample glass panel on the building, when is the facade gonna start being installed?

As per original design, the tower is to be covered by a transparent glass fascade and also the metal mesh. Its in the original design, and nothing has been changed. The double-helix columns are located inside the structure, and hence they have to be covered with glass. There is no way to leave them exposed--since the whole point is to have the transparent glass and metal work done on the outside.

Yeah I see that from the original plans, thing is though the glass facade looks better in the renders, the glass is clearer and the panels lock together with a seemless gasket rather than the clunky metal strips we can see on the glass being installed at the moment.

My worry is that costs have forced them to use cheaper materials and will ruin the overall look of the building. Fingers crossed it all looks ok in the end.

We can see its narrowing on the top! It looks smaller than I anticipated compared to the surrounding buildings--but still looks excellent!

@avid, it might look like plastic but it's actually hard metal. Plastic would not handle the Qatar heat so I'm quite sure its not.

I'm unsure as to how the view is going to be obstructed but I'm sure it's on of those that you have to be inside to see.

The tower was designed in such a way with the cladding so that it's tighter meshed in some areas to block the sun heat and it's more open in others. Apparantly they judged the sun's position to allow equal distribution of light as well.

I dont understand something though, in one post above you said that having just a glass facade is boring, but then say that covering it with that mesh is ugly or impractical?

Do the two layers of geometric design overlap, or are they side by side? Seems to me like the whole building will become a work of art once completed. These designs will hardly take away from the view this tower has over Doha. They will save energy by minimizing the sun heat from entering the building--thus saving cooling costs.

Wonderful...thanks! I'm wondering if this is a skyscraper or a piece of art... the atrium reaches the 27th floor..the metal mesh won't leave a great visibility from inside... does this building make any economic sense. Definitely unique! :cheers::cheers:

As I know the amount of layers are varied according to their locations; up to 4 layers in East and West ,and reduced to 2 layers in North and South. It’s to do with the sun path to reduce the effect of direct sun light

nope ! nothing moves ... they are statically fixed:) but they did calculation study to figure the exposed area then from that they arranged the layers accordingly .
