In my humble opinion Instambul is between the most beautiful cities in the world. Not just by what I see in this thread, but also by all I´ve seen about it in the SSC. It has wonderfull architecture, the sea, it seens very live, much colorful (something I don´t like in many european big cities is that they are too much monochromatic), the palaces, castles. It´s a place I really would like to visit.

They are residential buildings. Most of them were constructed during the late Ottoman period.

Istanbul is somewhat underrated, I think (at least in America). It's really quite gorgeous. Many of the buildings are so bright and colorful and warm. It also has that great low-rise density so characteristic of European cities, which I love. Great tour.

GALATASARAY LYCEE
Galatasaray Lycee was originally founded in 1481 by the Ottoman Sultans, but experienced a dramatic transformation when it opened a window to the western world in 1868 by initiating French as the language of instruction.

Galatasaray Lycee became co – educational in 1965. Today, the school receives strong support from the French Government along with the Galatasaray Foundation and its alumni, many of whom are prominent members of the Turkish community. On April 14, 1992, Galatasaray reached another milestone; a new clause was added to the Turkish – French cultural agreement of 1952. Based on this, the Galatasaray Educational and Learning Institution (GEOK) was established. Starting from that day, the school expanded vertically and created an institution providing education from primary school to the university level. In 1996, GEOK officially became the "University of Galatasaray". The primary and high school education of this independent institution, is carried out according to the rules and regulations issued by the Turkish Ministry of Education. The University follows the rules and academic regulations followed by other Turkish institutions of higher education. The teaching medium is primarily French and the French higher education curriculum is used when appropriate.

Students graduating from Galatasaray Lycee have a number of choices for their higher education. They may enter Galatasaray University after passing an internal exam in French. Also, under the Turkish – French cultural agreement of 1952, Galatasaray graduates, who have been accepted to a Turkish University, are entitled to enroll in a French University directly without having to take the French Baccalaureate examination. Furthermore, and with the new agreement of 1992, Galatasaray University Graduates have the opportunity to pursue post-graduate studies at the Sorbonne University, in France. Galatasaray Lycee is fully accredited by the Turkish Ministry of Education, French Government and the Galatasaray Foundation.

The building on Istiklal Street is established on 149333 square meters. There are 54 classrooms, each of which is ideal for 30 students, two multimedia centers, two art workshops for 40 students each, two music rooms, two convention centers, one for 250 students the other for 500, one computer lab with 30 computers, one tennis court, three gymnasia, one soccer field, one infirmary for 15 people, a girls dorm for 250 and a boys dorm for 675 and three refectories for 400 people each. Galatasaray Lycee is bilingual and bi – cultural. In addition to French and English, Italian and Latin are also taught. Students enter Galatasaray Lycee at the age of 14 and spend the first two years in an intensive French language program. The high school program (Lise) is a three – year program equivalent to grades 10, 11 and 12, under the American system. Primary education lasts for 8 years. At the end of the eighth year, a level exam determines the capacity of the student to pursue studies in French at the Lycee. The school year is composed of two semesters, one running from early September to late January, and the other from mid – February to early June. There were 180 school days in the 1999 – 2000 school year.

WOW this is realy amazing.
Funny how the media sets peoples minds. My first (ignorant) thought was that it is a bit dirty old crapy city.
After seeing Allan presentation i`m now convinsed that istanbul is in the top 10 of most beautiful cities in the world.
Looking at the size i would say number one.
Rue Francaise is amazing.
The warterfront is very beautiful.
And the terrasses in the small allies is perfect.
Istanbul is the whole of europe in one city.

cabs are old (or designs are old :) ) Because:
1. Taxi is very cheap here. You pay less than another country.
2. So they are popular and drive all the day kilometers. And working hard makes problem at the cars as you know. This is why drivers prefer such cars
3.These are native cars, Tofaş, and not famous in the world. So drivers can find cheap pieces for their cars
4.Istanbul has a big traffic problem, and drivers prefer cheap cars for this trafic.

However.....
Taxis wil be changed by municipality, although drivers don't want so much. Mayor wants a design wich represents the city...

Where were the first pictures you posted taken? Beyoglu? They look like nowhere in Istanbul that i've been.

Great thread, by the way, but there definitely are MANY poorer, dirtier areas in Istanbul that have clearly been left out. Istanbul is incredibly diverse. There are huge slum areas that are what one might call "3rd world," but theres also monumental Sultanahmet and fashionable Beyoglu, both of which could easily be found in Western Europe (that is, if it wasn't for all the stunning Islamic architecture). This thread shows the monumental and fashionable parts of Istanbul, but not the poorer parts. The images "westerners" have of Turkey may be flawed, but the image propogated by this thread won't be any better unless the poorer side of Turkey is shown.

That being said, I have to say Istanbul is one of the most amazing cities I've ever visited. I highly recommend a visit.

Allan
April 1st, 2005, 10:14 AM
it looks like you haven't visited Istanbul's many non-touristic areas and I don't know when you have visited, but things have incredibly changed within the last 5-6 years. With a growing economy, and a tourism sector, many old districts and neighbourhoods of Istanbul have been renovated, and many "poor" sections have been reconstructed. This process is still continuing and Turkish government has taken serious steps. Take a look at these pictures. This is an old and newly renovated neighbourhood of Istanbul.

http://dunyaturk.com/tr14/memocan_cezayir_sokagi04.jpg

http://dunyaturk.com/tr14/memocan_cezayir_sokagi06.jpg

I think things are getting better under the very successful mayor of Istanbul.Having said that "poor" areas of Istanbul and Turkey no where close to the ones found in South America or in India. Yes there are poor areas of Turkey but still way better than many, I mean many, countries.

PS.
No matter what i do here, i can't change the negative image of Turkey that people have in mind, because of media, islam, midnight express, prejudice and many other things so I don't even attempt!

strange comments above.

i was there in 1983, 1987 and 1991 and it was abssolutely stunning then as it is now.

it's true that much has been done but even still, the experience i had when i was there was extremely positive.

As for the slums etc - why the hell should they be posted here? This is about Imperial Istanbul and all its glory - if you want see slums start another thread. Maybe i should post some of Glasgow's poor areas. I think dcbll would be surprised at the povert in his own country.

Allan - these pics are getting more and more impressive - I actually think many people online will be shocked at how little they know of Istanbul. I cannot think of a more beautiful city.

Istanbul looks like Istanbul; European, Asian, Ottoman, Levantine - that's its beauty - i hope it stayas like that.

dcb11
April 2nd, 2005, 01:34 AM
space_invader, I would not be surprised at all about poverty in my own country, which by the way is the US. I'm just in the UK for the year, but I've done quite a lot of exploration around very poor areas. I know poverty exists in both the UK and the US. I'm ESPECIALLY familar with the poor areas of Glasgow that you mentioned.

If someone accused Birmingham, for example, of being and ugly industrial city, I could post pictures of Selfridges and other redevelopments, but what would that prove? Nothing. If someone said "Birmingham is COMPLETELY ugly and industrial," then my pics might prove something.

When was the last time I was in Istanbul? Let's see... that would be about two weeks ago.

Yes, my experience of Istanbul was extremely positive as well. I just think that people do have an image of Turkey as more backward than it is, but these photos show Istanbul as more, um, European than it really is. Istanbul is a mix of Europe and Asia, rich and poor, areas like the ones in the photos and areas that are poorer. You are certainly not obligated to post pictures of slums and poorer areas if you don't want to, but you should just know that posting photos from wowturkey is not a good way to change peoples conceptions of Turkey. People should simply take these pictures for what they are. They show that Istanbul has SOME areas that are nice. There's nothing wrong with a thread about these areas. Most tellingly, however, street level shots of areas like Fatih and Fener are not present, although buildings in Fatih and Fener are. The photograhers aimed their cameras up to keep the viewer from seeing the run-down areas. Similarly, if you want to post pictures of the Upper West and Upper East sides of Manhattan, please do so, but don't say "See, the US has a reputation for having decaying inner cities, but I don't see any here!"

For one thing, the newer areas in these photos are also the ones that are the most "Western." While these areas are nice and do show that Turkey is becoming wealthier, they also diminish the idea of Istanbul as a cultural bridge a great deal. If you think posting pictures of Istanbul's poorer areas is a negative thing, then you obviously don't appreciate the full vibrancy of the city. The poorer non-Western areas aren't, contrary to what you may believe, a liability to the city. They are, rather, a great asset.

The bottom line is that these pictures show a very small proportion of Istanbul, which I have explored quite heavily. Even Beyoglu, which is probably the most "Western" area, is still very poor compared to what is seen in these pictures. I'll post some pics I took from the top of Galata Tower at some point. Turkey, like China, is still a developing country, despite what official tourism bureau pics might suggest. Nevertheless, Turkey has enormous potential, and Istanbul is already one of the world's greatest cities.

dcb11,when Allan opened this thread he mentioned it's "for architecture lovers",and he really kept this thread extremly focused on this subject mostly showing the buildings new and old.Like everyone knows that most large metropolises has slums and ugly neighborhoods noone can deny. But showing slums in a thread which is for "architecture lovers" doesn't make any sense. It's like showing Manhattan for the architecture but including Bronx's left alone blocks after blocks deserted neighborhoods.Lets take one thread a time.

The smell was probably coming from Golden Horn (Haliç), which was badly poluted by the overpassing ships and most importantly industrial/domestical wastes at that times. Now it is fully cleaned, and up to chemical tests, water of Golden Horn is even safe enough to swim.

Great comparison, Sercan.

I did not mean to suggest that pictures of poorer areas needed to be posted here. Of course they do not. But people always post things like "Wow, that place looks really nice. People always think that it's poor but it's not," and those conclusions shouldn't be made based on threads like this. Its not just this one time occurance either; the Chinese forums and others (such as the ones about Makati) are frequently accompanied by "Stupid Americans think it's poor, but they're wrong," which is not accurate, as anyone who's actually BEEN to China can tell you. The pictures show us nice parts of the cities they concern, but they do not tell us anything about the average living conditions of the residents. I would say exactly the same thing about pictures of New York or Paris. I have been all around the NY and Paris metros, so I have a decent feel for the area. Pictures of specific locations, of course, tell us very little about wealth and poverty of metro areas in general. In fact, they tell us about as much about wealth as a picture of Canary Wharf tells us about London's overall skyline. They're misleading at best, and desceptive at worst.

Incidentally, most of the areas in Istanbul I've been to looked somewhat like the first picture of the Rue Francaise above. Some areas were much cleaner and wealthier, and some (espeically Fener/Fatih) were MUCH poorer, to the point of making me a little sad. The areas like the one in the picture were always bustling and vibrant, and I loved them. Fener and Fatih were more depressed it seemed, completely lacking the vibrancy of other places in Istanbul, including other poor ones. I have no doubt, however, that Istanbul will be massively restored, especially in the lead-up to (fingers crossed) EU membership.

That's all I'll say about this. I think this a fantastic thread; I didn't mean to imply there was something wrong with it. I just get thinks it's funny to hear people who seem to think that poverty is non-existent in some place because they see photos that look nice, and that the perception that poverty does exist there is simply a Western stereotype. I'll just shut up now and let you enjoy the photos, and maybe post some of my own in the near future.

Oh, don't worry. I'm not going to stop posting or looking at this thread. I just don't want to be one of those people who ruin perfectly nice threads by making a comment that turns into a dicussion or argument. I don't want people to think that I don't love Istanbul, or that I have an inherent Western bias toward poorer countries. I just think photos can be deceiving, and want people to recognize that. Turkey, and pretty much all developing countries, IS marginalized and thought of as inferior in most of Western civilization. I realize Istanbul is more developed, richer, and cultural than most would think, but these photos don't prove that, and in fact Turkey IS significantly poorer than the rest of Europe. These photos, in that sense, can be disceiving if they are used to convince someone of Turkey or Istanbul's wealth. Taken on their own, they are beautiful pictures of some nice parts of Istanbul.

If you didn't think Istanbul had ANY nice areas, the pics should change your opinion. If you thought Istanbul was much poorer than cities in Western Europe, you're right despite what these pics may (or may not) suggest.

wow, thats impressive, though I worry areas like these loose character. Overall good for the city and the image it is trying to project to the world. I'd like to see more pictures, especially the areas not usually shown.

I'm worried about Turkey's future after the EU constitution vote. Europe needs Turkey even more than Turkey needs to join the EU. I hope Europe comes to their senses, progresses forward on integration, and begins the process of admitting Turkey.

Pera Palas, Istanbul

Designed by the French architect Alexander Vallaury, also the architect of Union Française And the Ottoman Bank was begun in May 1881; the hotel was opened in October 1891. It is said that Sultan Abdülhamit attended the opening ceremony. The "Compagnie Internationale dés Wagons et des Grands Express Européens" had built the hotel for the use of passengers coming from Paris to Istanbul. This is why the symbols of the Pera palas and the orient express are the same.

From the time of its opening until today, Pera palas had been frequented by well-known and highly-placed figures in the political world; such as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Ismet Inönü, Celal Bayar, Adnan Menderes, Fahri Korutürk, Refik Koraltan, King Zogo of Albania, Shah Rıza Pehlevi of Iran, King Edward V111 of England , King Ferdinand of Bulgaria, King Carol of Romania, president Tito of Yugoslavia and Jacqueline Kennedy. The long list of political guests includes Giscard d’Estaing, Von Papen, Mata Hari Cicero .The list also includes innumerable names from the world of culture and art such as Agatha Christie, Yehudi Menuhin, Marie Bell .

Maiden's Tower

Built on the rocks of the asian shore at the mouth of the Bosphorus Strait, the 30m-high Landers Tower was first constructed as a watch tower. In Turkey it is called Kiz Kulesi (Girl's Tower). Todey you can find in it a 5 star restaurant and a bar.

My favourite church in Istanbul

St. Anton Church

St. Anton Church was built by the architects Mongeri and Eduardo de Nari in 1913 in Istanbul. It's still one of the biggest churches in Turkey. Though the church was built in neo-classic-style, it's precisley Venetian style. It was the first time in in 1976 when christians prayed in Turkish language.

I'm worried about Turkey's future after the EU constitution vote. Europe needs Turkey even more than Turkey needs to join the EU. I hope Europe comes to their senses, progresses forward on integration, and begins the process of admitting Turkey.

I'm with you.

It´s a place I really would like to visit.

yes Istanbul is really good I like it and me and my friends came to sao paolo it was amazing too

I think most of the people(who are not so interested like us) do not click the thumbnails just for one picture it is a kind of long process:),they just check the pages.

it can stay Istanbul :D
but u are right
since 1950s Istanbul was the "old Istanbul"
But the new major started to reactivate the old districts
But there will be still these non Istanbul sub-urban districts

The Bulgarian St Stephen Church (Bulgarian: (желязната ) църква свети Стефан; Turkish: Sveti Stefan Kilisesi) in Istanbul, also known as the Bulgarian Iron Church, is a Bulgarian Orthodox church in Istanbul, famous for being made of cast iron. Built in 1896 at the place of first wooden Bulgarian Church.

The church belongs to the Bulgarian minority. The Bulgarians of the Ottoman Empire used to pray at the churches of the Phanar Orthodox Patriarchy, but due to nationalistic movements, Bulgarians were allowed a national church in the 19th century.
