dcb11 April 12th, 2005, 04:56 PM Nice ad campaign. Very beautiful pictures. I like the emphasis on color and diversity (both of terrain and people).
A few criticisms: I don't like the "!ndia" thing, or the (very weak) attempt to make the top of the Taj Mahal look like an "I." Spelling out Incredible India would be sufficient. The photos speak for themselves.
Also, there are too many ads based around the Taj Mahal. The pictures are wonderful, but I think India is already heavily associated with the Taj Mahal, and everybody knows what the Taj Mahal looks like! India has so many wonderful monuments and sites. It would be a shame to reinforce the idea that India has the Taj Mahal without showing how much else India has to offer. In order to convince tourists to come to India, you have to show them that there are MANY things to do and see in India. They already know about the Taj Mahal.
thalaiva April 13th, 2005, 07:14 AM I saw an article saying that tourists were disappointed after seeing the Taj because the ad campaigns depict the taj with a clean blue yamuna river flowing nearby, but the reality is that the yamuna is polluted and dirty and does not look anything like it is depicted in the picture. The article was just comparing tourist feedback. Apparently Malaysia has good tourist feedback as does Singapore. I feel that the GOI must try and improve the area around the Taj so that it meets and exceeds the expectations of even the most difficult to impress tourist.
dcb11 April 13th, 2005, 08:24 AM Well, maybe the Yamuna isn't as clean and blue as it looks in the pictures, but if tourists we're "disappointed" after seeing the Taj Mahal, then there is something wrong with them!
If only there was an India Pavillion at EPCOT tourists could just go see the Taj Mahal there! I guess Disney didn't think India, a small unimportant country that most people haven't heard of, didn't need a Pavillion. Norway on the other hand...

I am sure that the tourists were not disappointed on seeing the Taj. Where else would you see such a wonderful monument. I guess they were just not happy with the surroundings. Agra is a small city and not that clean.
I think that with our increasing purchasing power, it will not be long before Disney comes begging for money to India. Maybe one our entrepreneurs will start an entertainment empire, which will buyout Disney.

Naga_Solidus February 14th, 2006, 06:17 AM Not bad but they need to do a few more urban-themed things, and while the print ads are cool, the TV ads need to add a few more modern things. From what I've seen, they all seem to focus on rural women spinning around with pots on their heads, among other things. Here's what the TV ads should be like:
Shot 1: Delhi Metro platform, with a woman in a red catsuit doing yoga while a train pulls in.
Shot 2: A classic shot of the Rashtrapati Bhavan lighting up at night.
Shot 3: Bandra-Worli Sealink construction 24h time-lapse video w, 1hr intervals.
Shot 4: Victoria Terminus/Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus at night, with lights and stuff.
Shot 5: Two guys giving a Kalari Payattu demo.
Shot 6: Birla Planetarium w/ people doign yoga on the front lawns.
Shot 7: Same old Taj Mahal shot.
As for the print ads, the current ones are nto too bad but they should eb supplemented with the following:
A: A shot of the Lotus Temple.
B: Bandra-Worli Sealink (when it's done)
C: Tigers at Ranatahmbur.
D: Stem cell research at AIIMS.
There's nothing wrong with pushing our history (indeed it is a big tourist draw), but by dropping in some stuff from modern India we can really change people's perceptions. Remember, this is a bit like what Japan did with its Shinkanshens and stuff. India must be marketed as a nation where futurism runs alongside tradition. That's why I dropped in a few heritage shots with my proposed TV spot.
klein February 28th, 2006, 09:43 PM I saw the I2 ad campaign on CNN on sunday. It was pretty slickly done.
Ministry of tourism deserves a pat on the back.
p2p4 March 7th, 2006, 10:30 AM Incredible India = for that matter anything / any place would look incredible if the pictures are 'treated' with color saturation to make them look bright and outstanding.
The most INCREDIBLE thing about the ad campaign is that though on one hand it says "ATITHI DEVO BHAVA" = Our Guest is God (hahahahaha).. and yet, on the other, our guests are expected to pay exhorbitantly high entrance fees to enter almost every monument of historic/archaeological significance.
You will never miss the signages put up by the Ministry of Tourism and the Archeological Survey of India - which blatantly mention "ENTRANCE FEES FOR INDIANS Rupees 10.00 and for Non-Indians U.S.Dollars 5.00).
Yeah Yeah.. incredible discrimination indeed. And I am incredibly ashamed to see my own Indian Govt treat foreigners in such bloody shamelessly cheating ways.
Incredibly ashamed..

Durbsboi March 22nd, 2006, 09:31 AM India is a very beautiful country & being an Indian myself I would love to visit the country soon, my grandad has a house in Surat, Gujerat, so he flys up & down between South Africa & India. India has so much to offer, it has the desserts, the icy & snow capped mountains, the tropical beached of Goa, & the busy cities of Mumbai & Delhi, but in this Incredible India campaign I see they pay alot attention to the Taj Mahal, I know its a wonder of the world but India has so many other wonderful sites, the new Swami Narayan temple in Delhi is breathtaking! the gardens are beautiful (PS I am not a follower of the Swami Narayan mission) & all the other temples & shrines high up in the mountains of the country are magnificent, the architecture & attention to detail justs entertains the eyes when looked at.
Anyway lovey country your'll got here, keep it going well, & I hope to visit soon.

Agreed. I'm a regular visitor to India and when I took a friend recently we were discussing the campaign. We agreed that it was a bit like something from the 70s. There was very little of the India we actually saw in it. India needs to focus more on the modern reality of India and less on the cliche. I also agree with the other post that said toursists were diappointed by the Taj Mahal - the building itself is incredible but the surrounds are disgusting. India has to clean itself up - literally. The filth is a big turn-off for tourists. The cleanest and loveliest tourist attraction is the Sun Temple in Konark, which should be a model for all Indian attractions.

It is annoying to pay ten or a hundred times the amount but many countries have a similar system - even many countries in Europe did this until the establishment of the EU. However.... the prices charged at some national parks and safaris have become so ridiculous that we met many people who are now refusing to go to them. One couple we met had driven ten hours to a national park only to discover it cost for then $US300 for foreigners just to get inside - they were so angry they turned around and drove back. This has become a very common story and India has to realise you can't just charge foreigners anything and expect them to keep coming back.

Come on man, other countries do this stuff too. Not so much here in America (which is a very anti-discrimination concious society), but if you go to England you'll definitely see "EU Citizens: 5 pounds, non-EU: 10 pounds" stuff like that.

VaastuShastra January 7th, 2007, 05:46 PM Ha! To think that the Congress UPA government would promote a communal/Hindu/RSS monument like the Sun Temple. Fat chance of that happening. :scouserd:
I agree that the Taj Mahal is overexposed in Indian promotional campaigns. There's much more to India than that. There's things like the Taj Mahal all over the Middle East, and elsewhere there are Muslims. I'm not sure why they promote it so much. A lot of the tourists who come to India are interested in Hinduism, but there's virtually no Hinduism oriented advertising campaigns... Probably in keeping with the anti-Hindu bent of the national government. :bash:
Whilst people like us get annoyed that tha Taj is used as some 'symbol of India', there seems to be a severe lack of awareness in India that tourists love ancient ruins and temples - almost as if people either dont know they exist, or are ashamed of them, when infact most people would like to see them more than some medieval dome.
Indian ad campaigns should advertise three things:
-----
Ancient monuments:
Show a montage of ancient temples, ruins, Buddhist stupas, Hindu and Jain mandirs, statues, intricate carvings, and the other things shown in the 'Mystic India' film, including modern monuments built in the ancient styles.
Medieval mounments:
Show a montage of medieval temples, palaces, ruins, mosques, forts, castles, fortresses, statues, etc.
Modern monuments:
Show a montage of modern cities, lit up by night, skyscrapers, clubs, dancing, high profile bars, beach parties, film industry, etc.
Natural monuments:
Show the mountains, jungles, beaches, forests, hillside resorts, rivers, snowy highlands, and deserts of India.
-------
Right now, it seems the only things they ever show are the Taj Mahal, the deserts of Rajastan, a bunch of cliche peasants in bright turbans doing stupid hand gestures in front of monuments, and mowing crops, and 50 year old women taking baths in rivers.
China does it right - their CCTV channel broadcasts travel shows and history documentaries to the world in different languages 24/7.

I agree, to a degree. I'm ashamed to say that the first time I went to India I didn't even know Ellora or Ajunta existed. And the cities in india are probably the best part of the country - certainly the craziest and most interesting.

I just finished vacationing in Manhattan. There were incredible India posters all over the city, and a park near Times Square (sorry dont know which one) but we kept passing it on the tour bus, had an Incredible India festival, with lots of people, and a miniature Taj Mahal (from which they had a fashion show)
It was on for at least two nights. This was during the same time the UN General Assembly was in session , so there were even more people in NYC than usual (imagine that). Good timing, and great publicity.
