Blah January 5th, 2003, 11:24 AM Tokyo does lack a bit of character in these shots, but I'm sure it doesn't in real life. One of the worlds greatest cities without a doubt, and an inspiration to many people around the world. Just 50 years ago this was a backward 3rd world city. And now look at it! Possibly the most modern city in the world, and certainly one of the safest!
8/10. Could do with a few super talls, but it is an earthquake zone.
SluuugRadio January 5th, 2003, 02:22 PM Quit a disappointing skyline for it being the largest city in the world.

X-seed 4000 January 5th, 2003, 02:49 PM Tokyo look like Sao Paulo, if it had a CBD. And the night shots kick so much nuts!
I'm satisfied, but it could do better.

jmancuso January 9th, 2003, 10:58 AM for the largest city in the world - it's skyline is somewhat unimpressive. However, Mount Fuji in the background more than picks up the slack.

BGT January 25th, 2003, 12:33 AM 8/10 lots of skyscrapers!
DrumCorpsAlum February 26th, 2003, 04:05 PM First of all, BAD ASS photos you all posted there! Tokyo has tons of scrapers, but the city doesn't have my favorite skyline. Still a pretty damn good one IMO. 8/10.

coldstar April 9th, 2003, 02:23 PM When the sun sets in the west behind Mt.Fuji, Tokyo glows with incredibly brilliant neon lights over 100 miles, like pearls in a jewelry box. The scenery is really beyond description !! . Probably everybody would not be able to believe his own eyes at first. It's the time to realise the tremendous power of this biggest city on earth. But regrettably, this metro is too huge to take a sole photo !!

Monkey April 10th, 2003, 08:29 AM Thank you for bringing those gorgeous Tokyo pics over into this thread, coldstar. Spectacular!
But why would you think DeventerUp is prejudiced? Because he seemed critical of the photos?
This is strictly a matter of skylines, people. Nothing personal at all. Please keep it that way.
Deventer Up April 10th, 2003, 01:13 PM Yeah, i just think there are better photo's of the Tokyo skyline. I've seen other pictures of Tokyo and maybe some other people don't so they may get a little wrong impression of Tokyo. But let's keep it friendly :) .

fairladyZ April 12th, 2003, 09:05 PM For being the " world's largest city" it sure has a hideous skyline.
It's true, but thinking that Tokyo is the only place in the world which have four different plates which causes earthquakes and is constantly bombareded with it, I think skyline is quite impressive.
Certainly, street level of Tokyo is much more impressive than what I saw in New York, "the world most famous city".
fairladyZ April 12th, 2003, 09:12 PM For being the " world's largest city" it sure has a hideous skyline.
Oh, how do you judge the value of skylines??
Only height?? In this case Tokyo can not compete because each districts have strict height restrictions.
Most of the buildings in Tokyo are well-equiped and high qualities.
For examples this building below is only 245m but it has costed more than 8 times the price of Sears Tower, not to mention the price of Labour and Land is excluded. Only the pure price of what the building is worth.

BiggySmalls April 27th, 2003, 12:54 AM If only one city of this earth deserved a 10/10, then Tokyo should get it. There's simply so much in this megacity, that there's something sure to please every skycraper/building/city admirer, such as us. This is also it's only downfall, since it may just be too much for any single human to physically encounter the entire city.
A no brainer, 10/10. Tokyo defines city. And for everyone that disagrees, then you dont belong here! :D

I agree. It's the intricate details at street level that separates Tokyo from other megacities like HK and NYC. Plus, everything is so modern - because a lot of buildings were destroyed during WWII, most of what you see in Tokyo is less than 40 years old.

dom June 8th, 2004, 02:31 PM having been to tokyo several times, new york, paris and chicago i can say that in terms of scale tokyo is the most impressive city on earth. bar none. times square? yeah, its great but tokyo has 3 places which are on a par with this - shinjuku, ginza and shibuya.
it simply goes on for ever, tokyo seems infinite. the density is awesome, the amount of energy it consumes is incredible....its bladerunner for real.
tokyo whilst not being as relevent to the rest of the world as say, paris, new york or london, is simply more impressive as a city.....its not pretty...for sure... apart from at night where you can see the future and it really comes alive.....it has so many clusters of skyscrapers its untrue - shinagawa, ebisu, shibuya, maranouichi, shinjuku, shiodome, ikebukuro, akihabara.....
this is the only place that i've ever been that makes new york or london look small.....35 million people...
The Messiah June 9th, 2004, 11:05 AM I have got 1 word for this city: DENSITY!
8.5/10
Rickster885 July 7th, 2004, 09:32 AM The skyline is ok, but nothing like New York, Hong Kong, and Shanghai. However, it looks awesome at night with its many colorful lights. I give it a 7.5/10.
myfoong July 22nd, 2004, 04:52 AM 9/10 from me. The city looks very clean.
OBman July 22nd, 2004, 02:10 PM tokyo = 9.5 heheheh
actually judging by skyline itself.... i dun think i'll give 9.5... but the city is just too nice.. hightect, density, atmosphere, energy.. wat more do u want??
I guess it's one of the characteristics that NA or european cities don't have as much.
NY's mood would no way be a comparison to Tokyo. Althought HK's mood on the streets could match tokyo, but tokyo is more hightect heheheheh

Jules August 3rd, 2004, 07:13 PM It could use some taller buildings, although it is an earthquake zone. 7.
digili_man August 3rd, 2004, 07:14 PM skyline doesnt really seem that noticable. 7
Rapid August 8th, 2004, 02:28 AM Very very modern, the most modern in the world, actually.
And that affected my decision on the skyline, 9.5/10
Gester August 11th, 2004, 12:35 PM While it most be the advanced city in Buildings... most modern probaly not. It lacks common sense, for example there is garbage bags everywhere, they dont have garbage bins and somone collects it. They put it on the street and it it is collected 5 times a week. Certain days for certain types of garbage. So eventually it smells.... especially if you goto certain areas with large clusters of small restaurants (They put food waste on the street).
This is just what I noticed, but yeah it is amazing. Really seems like it neverends.
Monkey August 11th, 2004, 01:42 PM 9/10
One of the world's most underrated skylines.
Archangel-X August 19th, 2004, 07:42 PM 8.5/10
Probably because of the fact that the city is just so big - it just goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on...
skyscraper after skyscraper after skyscraper
But if you've been there you'll know what i mean - the city is SO ALIVE. just standing there and you'll feel swept away by that AWESOME CITY VIBE. A magnificent city.
heirloom August 20th, 2004, 01:41 PM 8
very boring looking but credit must be given to the general high quality of the larger buildings
WinterHeart September 6th, 2004, 10:27 AM I've forgotten what I rated it. 8, I think, because the skyline doesn't say a lot but it is really nice looking as far as big cities go.
lumpia September 6th, 2004, 06:37 PM 10/10. why?
firstly the quality of scrapers, large, mighty, "permanent" design to them, (that would be bout 5 points)
secondly, the fact that there are several skylines for each of the main centers, instead of one big continuous skyline (which i find boring), (another 3 points)
thirdly, have u even seen all the red obstuction lights on the scrapers all pulsating IN UNISON (as opposed to each buildings lights flashing at different intervals)? (that would be 2 points)
5+3+2=10 ;)
WinterHeart September 9th, 2004, 12:58 AM sort of an arbitrary point system you have set up there, but I like your reasons. :)
I just based my rating off what I got from the pictures in this forum.

Draff September 28th, 2004, 08:25 PM Tokyo really is a city that you shouldn't judge from the outside, but from the inside. You might not see an abundant of large skyscrapers but there's quite a number of quality smaller buildings and the atmosphere is just incredible. It's literally out of this world and I'd like to go back. It's very modern, clean and very very different from any other cities I've been to.

Sitol447 October 13th, 2004, 03:38 PM 9/10 - Nice skyline
Poryaa October 17th, 2004, 03:59 PM Tokyo's highest building is the Tokyo metropolitan government office, which the height is 243m.
So currently 7.5/10
But the main reason Tokyo lacks skyscrapers is not earthquakes.
In 2002 Taipei was hit by an earthquake of M7.3 but Taipei101 being built was completely undamaged.
Taipei101 was built by Japanese company's Kumagai Gumi co.
To sum up the main reason is that Haneda airport is not far off the heart of Tokyo.

sean storm December 7th, 2004, 12:21 AM i can only describe my feelings as ambivalent when it comes to judging tokyo's skyline. it can appear so stunning and yet so disappointing, depending on the angle or view. it is certainly a big-ass skyline, with 55+ buildings > 500 feet, fourth in the world after the Big 3. 360 degree panos are the best way to capture the extent of tokyo's skyline, since the skyline is too spread out to view with a single view from any vantage point. i like the fairly consistent aesthetic of simple geometries and facade patterns... some of them very elegant, some of them bland and dull. the skyline is pretty boxy though... it wouldn't hurt to have more spires or tapering forms. but there are hardly any buildings in tokyo that i would describe as totally tacky or gaudy... tokyo's skyline looks modern without looking desperate to be overly modern (case in point: shanghai). i think tokyo could use some focal landmark towers, perhaps a few in the 800-900 foot range (which is feasible engineering-wise but perhaps not economically). the new future tallest in tokyo is a f*cking box, for crying out loud! :|
nevertheless, tokyo has a jaw-dropping cityscape and few people realize just how big the skyline is, even though it isn't that tall. so it'd give it a 8.0.
btw, the above pictures are the best tokyo skyline shots i've ever seen.... the first shot is the probably the only good photo out there that shows 95% of tokyo's tallest buildings all in one view...
:)
i_am_hydrogen December 9th, 2004, 02:14 PM 9.5/10. When I look at the expanse of Tokyo in those above pictures, it looks so amazing. Tokyo, like New York is able to sustain that "downtown" feeling far, far away from downtown. The movie "Lost In Translation" really showcased the immensity of Toyko. I can't wait to visit.
Dark Element January 24th, 2005, 06:47 AM I give Tokyo a rating of 7.5.....there isn't much creativity in the buildings....nothing that really stands out.

I love its massiveness and in a decade or so, a few more skyscrapers built could really help tie it all together into a much taller Sao Paolo with class.
I dont like that all of the tallest buildings are around 230 meters. i would love to see a 350 meter tower poke through somewhere in the city.

No Mercy October 1st, 2005, 03:22 AM I can't argue with a person saying how this city is so unique. I got to say, Tokyo has to have one of the best looking skylines in the world, seriously!! I usually care about the area itself and on how it shows a city that is a never ending area. For fore most, I love this city. Even at night time when districts flash around during its period of attracting so many people. Another thing that made me amazed is that Tokyo has a Paris look in it, I mean this is Paris in the future, can you tell? with all the cafes and European bars, but in English though, and the Tokyo Tower is so much Eiffel Tower. If you are a fan of Japan, Tokyo is a must to visit. Tokyo is one of my favourite cities, and I am obsessed in it. 9.5/10
Reason why I can't give this a perfect score because I think Tokyo needs a very tall building, instead of making the Tokyo Tower the tallest, anywho, that is my half con.
diogoap October 1st, 2005, 04:09 AM 10 sure!

being tokyo i thought it would have an impressive skyline, yet looking at some pics. i've noticed its skyline is not what i had imagined. its small, bland and in general not very interesting. from what i have seen, tokyo is just made out of medium-sized boxes, which reminds me somewhat of sao paulo. it's also too overcrowded with uninteresting designs and colors.
FROM LOS ANGELES November 10th, 2005, 02:39 AM Skyline 4/10 but gave it a seven because of all the neon lights.

sharpie20 November 21st, 2005, 06:41 AM tokyo looks amazing from ground level, but from the sky it's boring and bland, for the largest city in the world it doesn't have many skyscrapers to show for it, i also don't like those red lights they put on tall buildings, it makes it look ugly

Tokyo gets earthquakes EVERY DAY.
z1sthies February 10th, 2006, 04:28 AM ^ ^ ^ agree, they cant really, they have to many earth quakes, any ways I think tokyo has to be one the most interesting city's in the world, who the hell cares if it doesn't have the best sky line in the world.
musicqro February 11th, 2006, 06:35 AM Not enough for the biggest city in the world
JoSin February 11th, 2006, 09:32 AM I am intrigued by the numerous pictures of Tokyo which is constantly changing...not literally changing but there are so many skyscrapers that million of pictures are not enough to take the whole skyscraper of Tokyo. Its amazing at the size. And i cannot disagree that it is an amzing city no other city can beat, including New York. But something it lacks is the skyline and height...which is understandable.
