Nice thread.I've been there before the inauguration of the tunnel and waiting the ferry was really annoying. This tunnel has a vital importance for the region...

Cool, I didn't know anything about Greece having underwater tunnels!!We are trying to build one in order to connect the asian metro to the european in Istanbul! And this since almost 10 years!!! Is there any reason why they didn't build a bridge?

In Aktio someone can find a large NATO base (AWACS).
This is one of the reasons in my opinion for building an underwater tunnel instead of a bridge.
Another argument is the morphology of the area . Th tunnel is more apropriate then a bridge .

I love tunnels, they are unbelievable difficult to construct and amazingly unpredictable. Just almost everything can go wrong at any time without apparent reasons.

This one is a fine tunnel, unfortunately not well advertised in Greece.

Now let's see what's going to happen with the Salamina-Perama tunnel.

WOW! there is such a project?

I think, that if something like that happens there should be a motorway at the island as well that connects the opposite side of the island to Megara eventually, through a bridge or a tunnel as well. This way all south Athens can connect to the Peloponnese and industrial areas of Attica in a much faster way, without congesting the center.

However this would be a major project.

Yes, there's such a plan. It was also merely mentioned two months ago in tv, moreover there are plans to include a railway connection in the tunnel (I think it will be a double tunnel if not triple)
