Overall, the flight was good, cabin was tidy and clean, cabin crews were professional and did their job effectively. Now I had 5hours and 35minutes before CX712 was due to depart. The flight report for CX712 will be posted within the next few days.

Having booked a holiday package with Cathay Pacific holidays to Bangkok with a stay at the Westin Hotel Grande Sukhumvit at Bangkok on Christmas Eve, I proceeded to CLK airport by taxi from Tai Po (very expensive) but it was needed due to the requirement to be at the airport 2 hours before the flight. Online-checkin was done at the Cathay desks at the B19. The check-in itself was quick since there was no one queuing.

Before passing through customs, I had a look around the landside of the airport for Christmas decorations. There was a big (but not really that big) Christmas Tree just next to the departures area.

B-HUI (cn 27230/1033 Delivered 6/94) is Cathay’s Boeing 747-467 in 744 config, which is in the same configuration to the cx 744s I have flown on before (B-HOT, B-HOP).

Nothing much to talk about the cabin, it’s basically the same as all the other 744s I’ve been on and I’ve flown on the 744 for so many times that there’s nothing special to talk about!

A little bit dirty.. I could see a bit of dust and stains, maybe there was a rush in turnaround… but this aircraft isn’t exactly new! 10 years and counting! There was also something (rubbish) on the seat pocket… but after flying on the A330, I felt that there was more leg-room on the 744 and it was more comfortable.

The boarding was very orderly and the flight pushed back on time, but the flight crew were kept quite busy. To my surprise, our aircraft was parked next to B-HOP – the aircraft which I repainted in Flightsim 2004! Snapped some shots of her so I’ll improve on my repaint!

After pushback, our aircraft taxied past the control tower, and soon afterwards, lined up on runway 7R for takeoff. The takeoff was smooth and it didn’t take much runway for the aircraft to rotate, probably due to the light fuel load despite being a full flight.

The aircraft then climbed through the cloud layers and encountered light turbulence and soon after making a few turns, blue skies were seen and we were on our way to Bangkok!

I was quite hungry since I had only light breakfast at Hong Kong airport (fairwood) – a pity there was no McDonalds in the departure area!

My choice of breakfast was the Baked Beans one. Even though I don’t like baked beans, I found that the meal was quite tasty and much much better than the one I had on my flight from Sydney to Hongkong! (goes to show the quality of Sydney’s catering!)
Generally, the small hash-brown was too moist, and soft and no longer crunchy (but let’s be realistic, it’s been reheated – so I find it acceptable!) The egg was quite good and the baked beans, well, I found it to be alright as well! The sausage was quite delicious also, I would rate this breakfast around 7.5/10.

- I N – F L I G H T -

We encountered a bit of headwind throughout the journey and the pilots step climbed to FL400 some 663 km from Bangkok! – the headwind at one stage got to as high as 141km/h (which is quite crazy considering even a car normally won’t travel as fast)… the ground speed was around 833 km/h.

Before descending, I visited the toilet and found it to be quite clean. But then again, nothing special to talk about here. Just a few pics…!

- D E S C E N T –

The descent commenced after the captain’s announcement some 220km from BKK. The descent itself was smooth and we made a number of turns (large turns) and got to see the outskirt of Bangkok and mountains, as well as some thick clouds! (and eventually a layer of smog – all too similar to Hong Kong’s)

The landing itself was very smooth and we landed at Bangkok Airport’s runway 21L at around 10am local time. The flight crew used flaps 25 at a Vref speed of 140 knots. Both spoilers (speedbrakes) and thrust reverse were used. The landing was quite smooth. I was surprised to see trees in the airport when I looked at the left side through the port side cabin windows of the aircraft though.


After a few turns on the taxiway, my flight concluded as we reached Gate 46 and yes it was HOT in Bangkok! This aircraft continued onto Singapore from Bangkok (codeshare with American AA6106)

Service (F/A etc): 8/10 (great service - professional and friendly cabin crew)
Cabin tidyness: 7/10 (not as clean as I hoped for – but it’s an old aircraft already so…)
Comfort: 9/10 (new seats – nice leg room)
Entertainment: 8.5/10 (good selection of movies, music, magazines etc.)

Thanks for your comments, but I didn't take these photos. I found them on an aviation forum and thought it'd be neat to share them here. However, I have flown on this sector before and it's a short flight (2.5-3 hours).
