:) I am on a simliar flight in the coming months, Tokyo - NY... Not going to be that great, haha.

it is in a 777 however, can you tell me what these planes are like to fly on? I've never been on this type. How is the cabin noise etc?

Continental didn't take the polar route. They started flying to Newark with much fanfare on being approved to fly transpacific around the North Pole.

Did they actually changed the route? I took this very exact flight like 3 or 4 years ago, and I was sure it passed over North Pole... And if I remember correctly, the food (in economy class) was barely eatable...

I wonder if it is due to wind conditions, but Continental tends to have very short flights to Hong Kong via the North Pole. Interestingly, the route they took is almost exactly the same as the one Cathay Pacific flies between Hong Kong and Toronto via Anchorage using the great circle around Alaska's southern coast.

For a descent-looking meal like that on an American carrier, you were obviously flying First/Business Class :) Continental is the carrier I usually take and I like them a lot but Coach-class transatlantic meals is always always always "Beef or Chicken" and on return flights to the US is a cold sandwich with a dull-looking piece of ham that is stuck to the surface of the bread. Anyway, I love travelling so your pics bring back good memories :)

Didn't Thai fly their New York-flight in "the other direction (over Europe) with their A340? In that case, how come?

Nice report. :)

CO has probably the best international service of any us carrier. The only better service would be united's p.s. between NY and SF/LA.

I checked the schedules and indeed Thai has a nonstop BKK-New York flight, but they don't have a stopover in Europe. As to how they route the flight path I'm actually not sure, but I thought it'd be faster to fly near the Noth Pole heading east bound.

Yeah, they started flying non-stop this summer with the A340. And I'm pretty sure they fly/flew it over Europe (not a stop-over) instead of over the Pacific (read it in a flight report iirc). Pretty funny since BKK and HKG are very close.

I might be wrong but i believe Continental's longest flight is now its Newark-New Delhi route which just recently opened up in mid September.
