Okaz/Saudi Gazette - 6 July 2011
MAKKAH – The tallest golden minaret in the world, which has been erected on top of the Makkah Clock Tower, will broadcast the call for prayer (Adhan) from the Grand Mosque in Makkah through special loudspeakers that will carry the sounds to people almost 7 kilometers away.
On special Islamic occasions, such as the beginning of the Hijri months and Eids, 16 special vertical lights will flash 10 kilometers into the sky.
During the Adhan, 21,000 lamps on the highest point on Makkah Clock send brilliant white and green lights to the sky; they can be seen from a distance of 30 kilometers. The lights indicate the beginning of time for prayer, especially for people with special needs such as those with weak hearing and those far away from the Grand Mosque.
The Makkah Clock Tower stands 601 meters. The height of the clock from its base to the highest point at the peak of the crescent is 251 meters.
The tower’s height makes it the world’s second-tallest building after the 828-meter Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The clock, which began showing time about 11 months ago, is part of the structure that cost some SR11 billion to construct, officials have said.
The front and rear of the four faces are 43 meters by 43 meters and the two side faces are 43 meters by 39 meters.
“Allahu Akbar” (Allah is the Greatest), in Arabic, can be seen on the top part of the clock.
The letter “Alif” in “Allah” is more than 23 meters tall and the crescent, with a 23-meter diameter, is the largest crescent ever made.
The two testimonies, “There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is His Prophet,” can be seen at the top of the two side faces of the clock, which has been designed in an Islamic style, according to the most precise Islamic criteria.
The clock, which weighs 36,000 tons, is more than six times larger in diameter than London’s famed Big Ben.
During the day its face is white and the indicators are black. At night, the face changes to green and the indicators change to white.
More than 90 million pieces of colored glass mosaic embellish the sides of the clock, which is visible from all corners of the city, SPA has said. Elevators will take visitors up to a huge viewing balcony just underneath the faces, a four-story astronomical observatory and an Islamic museum. The Clock Tower is the landmark feature of the seven-tower King Abdulaziz Endowment hotel complex. The project is part of efforts to develop the old city and make it more capable of catering to pilgrims.
The clock reflects a goal by some Muslims to replace the 127-year-old Universal Time standard – originally called Greenwich Mean Time – with Makkah Mean Time.
At a conference in Doha in 2008, Muslim clerics and scholars said Makkah time is the true global meridian. They said Makkah is the center of the world and that the Greenwich standard was imposed by the West in 1884.

Chipmunk July 15th, 2011, 07:16 PM What a monstrously ugly thing. I'm so shocked they built this right next to the most sacred place for Muslims. It completely overshadows the mosque and also denies it future expansion.
In other countries this would never have been allowed, either by the government or the public. Imagine if the reaction if they proposed building such a thing next to St. Paul's Cathedral in London or the pyramids in Egypt.

MAKKAH – Muslims around the world can now set their watches to Makkah Mean Time in Ramadan when all four faces of the world’s largest clock atop a soaring skyscraper in the Holy City becomes operational.
The clock, more than six times larger in diameter than London’s famed Big Ben, will establish Makkah as an alternate time standard to the Greenwich meridian. At a conference in Doha in 2008, Muslim clerics and scholars presented “scientific” arguments that Makkah time is the true global meridian. They said that Makkah is the center of the world and that the Greenwich standard was imposed by the West in 1884.

Al Riyahd – Mohammad Al Haidar
The astronomical researcher Dr. Khalid Bin Saleh Al Za’ag, member of the International Arab Union for Space and Astronomy, expected that Shaaban will complete 30 days and that Monday the first of August will be the first of Ramadan blessed month for the current year 1432 H. Dr. Al Za’ag clarified that the moon met with sun in the end of the month of Rajab, and with the opposing path of its movement, they will meet again after the sunset of Saturday 29/8/1432 H at 9:40, and when they meet they will be on one sky longitude. He also said that the in dawn of Juma 28th of shaaban the moon will rise with Fajer prayer with a think shape and in the dawn of Saturday the 29th of Shaaban the moon will rise before the sunrise by nearly half an hour and will drown in its yellow rays. While in the evening of Saturday the 29th of Shaaban the moon will set before the sun and will not gather with the sun, and so the horizon will be out of the moon at all and thus Shaaban will complete 30 days, and in the evening of Sunday the 30th of Shaaban the crescent will remain around 25 minutes to the west of the sunset with a 1.18% lighting on its surface, and its shape will deviate with a slight perpendicularity, its horns will be nearly western and will be far from the earth by 368695.0 KM.
He also continued with saying that according to the astronomical givens in such things, the possibility of watching it in Sunday the 30th of Shaaban will be very hard because of the low lighting and its short presence as well as the need of telescopes in order to watch it, and it is very hard to see except from South Africa and South America countries because the new month crescent is not east to be seen except when the center of the moon get far from the center of the sun after they meet in the coupling moment by an enough distance with the appearance of light rays (crescent) in the moon.

The Makkah Royal Clock Tower will start ticking
officially on the first of Ramadan
By BADEA ABU AL-NAJA | ARAB NEWS
Published: Jul 30, 2011 22:51 Updated: Jul 30, 2011 23:02
MAKKAH:The Makkah Royal Clock Tower, the second tallest tower in the world, will start emitting 16 light beams to a height of 10 kilometers Sunday evening to announce the beginning of Ramadan.
The loud speakers installed at the top of the tower will carry the sound of adhan (call to prayer) from the Grand Mosque to seven kilometers far. The powerful lights in white and green blinking at the time of adhan can be seen from a distance of 30 kilometers. The lights are also helpful for people with hearing difficulties to know prayer times.
The clock face is white and indicators dark during daylight and green and white at night.
A trial run of the clock was held at the beginning of last year’s Ramadan.
The gigantic Makkah clock project was constructed on top of tower number five of King Abdul Aziz Endowment project, which consists of seven towers.
“All arrangements to receive Ramadan guests in the residential hotel, on which the clock tower is situated, have been completed. All rooms and suites have an Islamic style of interior décor that add to the spirituality of Ramadan,” director of telecommunications and business promotion at the Fairmont Raffles Hotels International in Makkah, Khaled Yamaq, said.
The Makkah Clock Tower Hotel, on which the clock is situated, is 601 meters high with 76 stories and 858 suites. It overlooks the Grand Mosque.
“A large number of pilgrims of different nationalities will be visiting the tower to get a close look at the interior of the clock tower. Therefore, the hotel’s main banquet hall has prepared to accommodate 1,000 guests for iftar (fast-breaking meal) and suhur (predawn meal before starting the fast). It comprises menus of 15 countries, including local dishes,” he said.
Ramadan cannon
A cannon will fire seven shots to mark the beginning of Ramadan in Makkah, the Saudi Press Agency said on Saturday. Shots will be fired throughout the month to announce the time of breaking the fast, the time for suhur and the end of the suhur.
The cannon will be positioned at the top of the highest hill, away from residential neighborhoods in Makkah, and is provided with sound-producing detonators. There are special security officers to take care of the cannon, which will be sent back to the store of the Tasks and Duties Administration in Makkah after the last shots announcing the arrival of Eid Al-Fitr. A total of 150 shots will be fired in the whole month.
In most Muslim countries, cannons are fired to announce the beginning of Ramadan and fast breaking time.

Well the increase is just because the Saudi govt. allowed a bigger number of visas. And there is always demand for that in the world. I hope the mosque expansion and residential projects for pilgrims are also keeping pace so the millions who come can find their stay cheaply and easily.

I don't think they build that minaret for handicapped ppl like deaf. Deaf don't need this. When maghreb time comes it's easy to know usualy the sun go sleep ...so we don't need light to know it. How many deaf are there in Makkah(or Mecca) looking at it now to know time of salat?
In Canada we don't have adhan is the street...everybody have calculation time prayer.
Just they want a geat minaret...a special one for Makkah, for every muslims in the world. A landmark.

looks like you are very concerned with photos only with out understanding the concept behind that huge project
it was meant to please every one, normal people like us can hear Athan from that minaret 7 Km away (why did they bother to do that if we all have watches to use? and we all have that gigantic clock on top of that tower to see?), the concept over here is to have every one alerted with Salat time in the way they understand, feel, hear and/or see, other wise no need for Athan in Haram if every one got his watch to go with.
and this is from the design concept explanation:

COMEON!! I can't believe you seriously believe all that. The flashing lights and the glimmering crescent with a tall building is just a rush to outpace Dubai in glitzy development. Just make some excuse and associate Islam / benefit to people somehow, and here you have a thawab-making gimmick to call people to prayer.:ohno: It is what it is in plain sight.

But I don't think at all that they conceive this kind of lighting ''first'' for the deaf ppl. Maybe it help for them. But if tomorrow there is no more deaf ppl in Makkah area I'm sure they will continue to light it - for prayers, at beginning of each month and for eids - because the first reason it's for all muslims in the Makkah area. The lighting is for everyone who sees. Light can be seen far away for all over the Makkah area where adhan don't go so far.
You have to put in mind that they want the highest and beautiful minaret in the world for ''Makkah'' the city they plan to be the most beautiful city in the world (''A Blooming Garden''). So lighting makes the minaret ''special''! A landmark (and they compite with BigBen...lol)

Lighting time you see from a distance of 30 km
6 August 2011

Makkah - Jamaan Kanani, lens - Muhammad Hamid:
Mecca-hour look majestic in the sky of the Sacred House, a milestone each visitor to the house of God Blonha green, welcoming guests to the Ancient House. The time candidate to be the largest global-hour hugging the sky can be seen from all districts of Mecca, and that makes it distinct aesthetic addition to the features of Mecca due to its elaborate design engineering, participated in the making of a selection of local and international engineers.
On some occasions, such as entering the Islamic Hijri months and holidays, the 16 beam illumination light vertical especially up to more than 10 kilometers towards the sky and of the strength of each beam ten kilowatts. The ears will be broadcast directly from the Grand Mosque of Mecca by the highest-hour special speakers so that prayer can be heard in the vicinity of the Grand Mosque and from a distance of seven kilometers approximately.
During the call to prayer, lighting is the highest peak hour of Mecca by 21.000 issued light bulb lights bright white and green can be seen from a distance of up to 30 kilometers from the tower which is referring to the time of entering the prayer. It also enables optical signals with special needs Kdaafa hearing for example, or who happened to be on after the Grand Mosque of knowing the time of entering the prayer. And a clock face with white indices and black during the day and green and white indicators at night.
penta_a August 6th, 2011, 11:58 PM First thanks to educate me :)
What ever!
Saudi guy August 7th, 2011, 01:02 AM Vertical beams alone are more than enough to attract deaf attention!

The lighting of the clock can be seen from 30 KM
7 August 2011
Mecca – Jama’an Al Kenani
The high clock of Mecca in the sky of the Holy Mosque is a prominent landmark with its green color for every welcomed visitor of the Holy Mosque. The clock that is elected to be the biggest work internationally can be seen from all Mecca neighborhoods, which makes it a distinguished aesthetic addition to the landmarks of Mecca with what it resembles of accurate geometric design where a selection of local and international engineers participated in creating it.
In some Islamic occasions such as the arrival of Hejri months and Eids, 16 thousand special vertical light bundles get lighted to more than 10 kilometers into the sky, where the strength of each light bundle reaches ten kilowatts. The prayer calling of the Holy Mosque will be transmitted live from the tip of Mecca clock through special speakers that will allow hearing the prayer calling of the Holy Mosque from around seven kilometers distance.
During the prayer calling, the top of Mecca clock gets lighted by 21,000 light lamps of bright white and green colors that can be seen of a distance the reaches 30 kilometers from the tower, pointing the approach of prayer time. Those light pointers also allow the disabled people such as those with weak hearing or those that are far away from the Holy mosques to know the prayer timing. The front of the clock is white with black pointers at daytime and green with white pointers in nighttime.

Worshippers in the Haram were taken by surprise during taraweeh prayer on Friday night when lights in the clock suddently went off for severals minutes. Sources Okaz/Saudi Gazette that the cause was no a technical glitch but tests that are being conducted by a specialist technical team. The precision of the clock and the proper fonctioning of the electric leaps were being checked.
The company executing the project has completed installing the biggest gilded crescent in the world on top of the Makkah Clock. Light emanates from the crescent during Adhan through its 21,000 lamps, wich send shining white and green beams of light into night sky, wich can be seen from a distance of 30 km. the striking beams of lights can help people with special needs know the time for prayer despite being far away from the Haram.
Some days back the tallest gold minaret in the world - 208m high - was installed on top of the Makkah Clock.

Abdullah opens work on Mecca mosque extension
19 August 2011
JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia — King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia will officially launch a $10.6-billion (7.3-billion-euro) extension project Friday for the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Islam's holiest city, media reports said.
The project is intended to allow the complex to accommodate some two million worshippers at a time, the daily Asharq al-Awsat said.
The site, where 10,000 workers are already working round-the-clock covers an area of 400,000 square metres (4.3 million square feet).
The project envisages a multi-level extension on the north side of the complex, together with stairways and tunnels to facilitate worshippers access to the mosque, built around the cubic Kaaba that all Muslims face to pray.
The Grand Mosque underwent significant expansion in the mid-1980s, but the number of Muslim pilgrims has steadily grown, requiring another expansion.
Friday evening, Abdullah also is due to officially inaugurate the 601-metre (1,983-foot) Mecca Royal Clock Tower, topped with a gigantic four-faced clock that rises from behind the hills and helps visitors at other holy sites locate the Grand Mosque.
The clock tower is the world's second tallest building -- behind the Burj Khalifa, the 828-metre (2,717-foot) skyscraper inaugurated in Dubai early last year.
Mecca, which during the annual hajj pilgrimage attracts some 2.5 million Muslims from around the world for a stay of two weeks on average, last November opened a metro service that will operate only during the hajj season.
A proposed $10-billion (7-billion-euro) high-speed train linking Jeddah to Medina via Mecca is also in the cards, with European and Asian companies locked in fierce competition for the project.

MAKKAH/RIYADH: The Grand Mosque in Makkah is filled to the brim with worshippers these days as hundreds of thousands of pilgrims have come from all over the world to perform Umrah and attend taraweeh and qiyamullail prayers, seeking the blessings of Lailat Al-Qadr (night of power).
The Civil Defense department in Makkah gave Arab News a rare opportunity to take aerial photos of the Grand Mosque on the 21st night of Ramadan on Saturday sitting in their helicopter and at the initiative of Maj. Gen. Muhammad Al-Harbi, commander of aviation in the Kingdom.
The S92 model helicopter was piloted by Capt. Abdul Aziz Al-Dhufyan and 1st Lt. Ziyad Al-Otaibi.
The helicopter had come from Jeddah and was flying at a height of 4,000 feet at a speed of 80 knots.
The trip covered the central region of Makkah and the Arab News photographer was able to take shots of the whole of Makkah from various angles. The camera focused on the newly established Makkah Clock on the King Abdul Aziz Endowment Tower.
The helicopter flew over the Misfala, Kuday, Ajyad, Hafair, Hajoun and Aziziya areas that were crowded with vehicles carrying pilgrims and worshippers. The pilots gave instructions to Civil Defense ground staff based on information they had on traffic in various parts of the city.
The trip on the helicopter, which is mainly engaged in search, rescue and fire extinguishing operations and airlifting patients, took about an hour and half. The plane can carry up to 22 people.
