TIME FOR A NEW MEETUP

I finish uni on May 9th so from then until the 26th i'm free to come down again. Just to throw a date in for suggestion, how about Saturday May 13th?

Smileyface has said he should be able to come, so that makes 2 so far, who else is interested?

(i'll let a local yokel decide the venue as i'm not familiar with the best drinking holes  )

I often try and organise these things and more often than not never turn up, so if anyone's interested in a meat I'll let them take the impetus....

Hello Blunther :hi:

Yeah I'm still around but obviously don't post so much these days. I'm planning to meet Dean (Dinp) for a few drinks in Bham on hopefully May 13th so if any others want to tag along and turn this into another meet up then that's cool. All we need is a venue...suggestions?

March 31st, 2006, 11:01 AM

I'm still in Walsall Nacho (long story) and I've just been too busy lately to even post on here never mind go out on photo missions. I still have a quick look at the Bham forum a few times a week. I've got some days off towards the end of April and I promise to go on another of my all day photo sessions around the city....in fact I'm looking forward to doing so.

Blunther; Tap & Spile on Saturday May 13th it is then. We'll just have to sort out a time. Though that date is FA Cup Final day too btw.

Hi all, new user, first post, brummie lived in Solihull for past 20 years..
I'm more than a bit lost on here, so would appreciate it if someone could advise me in just a short paragraph or two..if I'm in the wrong place please make it known and I'll retire gracefully..thanks
(1) what goes on at these meetups? (apart from pi$$ up of course!!?)
(2) are the majority of you town planners or similar? (if not then what?)
(3) I'm primarily into backland/infill development and generally making a few quid as opposed to talking about making a few quid. I am more than partial to consuming large amounts of Guinness and not averse to paying for them (I've gone to forum meet-ups before and so many are frightened the bar may fall on them if they go anywhere near it). Let me know..cheers...Grower

Just a general drink, chin wag and a walk around development sites if the weather's nice. I'm a planner, but so long as you're interested in urban development, thats all that matters.

I'm really hoping that more than 4 of us turn up .... who ever you'll be supporting.

For those that are concerned about not being an architect or town planner don't worry, my work has sod all to do with design, construction, planning or whatever. I just love my city and really care about it's future. Besides, it will be nice to be amongst people who don't think i'm odd because i photograph buildings. [do you ? .... lol]

As it's the final week of live transmission of 'the ONE show' from BBC Birmingham's canalside studio, (and I've noticed increasingly people are wandering past to get on the telly), it would be worth considering, for a laff at least, of popping down there and standing outside on one of the balcony areas opposite in a group, say by the Ramada hotel, or one of the restaurants. or Bar Epernay, etc., and get seen!
The programme goes out live from 6.55pm and finishes around 7.25pm.

^^

Oh god, pardon me for saying this, but that is such a completely and utterly wanky thing to do! :| I mean - to stand there in the background of a live TV transmission/ news report or whatever and goon like a loon at the camera or wave stupidly just so to say "Woo! ... hey look at ME!! I'm on the telly!!". What is the big deal? Why do people do that? What is the point? Have they no shame? That's so sad! I get embarrassed the moment I see my own face in the mirror every morning as it is, so I sure as hell wouldn't be the sort of exhibitionist who would get their rocks off from seeing themselves acting like divvies behind the TV cameras! ;)

I mean, if I was the camera man, I'd make sure my equipment had some secret harpoon-shooting devices attached so that whilst filming I can also then take great pleasure in firing off some missiles at the silly sods and capture them being shot/speared live on TV for all to see.... it would be such a laugh to see these goofy plebs being felled as the cameras are rolling! That sort of thing would make my day!

Forward
September 5th, 2006, 11:35 AM
OK, you're pardoned for your wanky comments too. The suggestion to be there wasn't so much as to goon like a loon or wave stupidly as you put it. Not all people do this. Since the closure of Carlton/ATV studios and BBC's Pebble Mill,(and considering the size of this fair city), us ordinary Brummies don't tend to be involved in many networked tv productions anymore involving the city. So from that point of view you can possibly understand why some people find locally-produced live television both curious and interesting, and want to be a part of the show in front of the cameras.
A further point for considering going along there was to be associated with the imminent development of the Cube; how different this view of the canalside will look in a few years time, and as Brummie forumers, this could be a useful memory for the archive to have been identified with.

I can't believe they've put their seats by the window where the general public could do anything on live television! Surprisingly, the recluse I am, I was tempted to go along and show what I got on national(?) TV. Which reminds me - is it national TV?? Or just Midlands? Martin G???? Help! I'm surprised that no one has made a thread on it cos Birmingham is mentioned/shown quite a lot!

No you're over a mile further west, in Edgbaston proper. You have to carry on along the A456 Hagley Road and head towards the city centre until you come to an underpass (then take this route, going beneath the roundabout) - this is Five Ways - then the road gets much narrower at this point (one lane in each direction) and you will be stuck behind loads of buses and things. This is Broad Street, and the place in question is just before the blue lattice bridge over the road that connects the International Convention Centre with the Hyatt Hotel (the unmistakable reflective glass and blue tower).

Can I just break here to ask you one question: are you planning on driving down to this gathering yourself Irwell? I only ask because I would dearly love to attend this meet but can't cos I am fucking seriously skint and can't even afford the coach fare, that's why I've now knocked it on the head....on the other hand.....

Unfortunately I'm not driving down Martin, I'm getting the train. This has already been mentioned to me and if I'd known a bit sooner I'd have changed my plans. I decided to book my car in for a service while I was away. :( If, however, you can scrape some money together I'm sure I could chip some in to help you out, as could some others possibly. You were one of the people I was hoping to meet! Anyway, if you have MSN and want to talk about it, feel free to PM me. :)

The reason I've been asking where it is would be because I'm trying to book a hotel room. Is the Paradise Circus/Queensway/Paradise Street area more where i should be looking?

The reason I've been asking where it is would be because I'm trying to book a hotel room. Is the Paradise Circus/Queensway/Paradise Street area more where i should be looking?

Sorry about the misunderstanding. Thanks for setting the record straight - I'll have to give it a miss altogether then sadly (but will probably very likely make the Manc one planned for next week) as even a relatively cheap £12 funfare for the return NX coach ticket is beyond my means let alone £50+ for a fucking rip-off Virgin train ticket!

As for hotels - the best area to try is the Hagley Road corridor itself as there are innumerable guest houses and budget hotels/motels in that area. Unless you can afford the more swanky and salubrious surroundings of the city centre hotels that is..... :)

That's a shame, i was hoping you'd be there. :( BTW, the Virgin tickets only seem to be about £30 atm. I'm thinking of staying in the Copthorne Hotel, which is apparently on Paradise Circus. Would that be the right kind of area?

Martin G
September 6th, 2006, 03:05 AM
Copthorne is very close yes - it's only about 200-300 yards from the Lloyds bar where this meet is taking place, so yes, you'd be virtually in the vicinity.

It's a pisser that I can't afford to travel - let alone stay in B&B or hotels - everything costs too much these days, and for someone who is such an expert at making a very little money go a long long way (imagine eking out an existence on only £50 and making it last more than two weeks - I can now), even this is beyond my means. If you can make next week's Manc meet as arranged by Longford and Bammy then I will definitely see you there, so all is not lost.

Smileyface
September 6th, 2006, 11:33 AM
how long are you planning on staying at Lloyds, cos I don't get out until 5pm and then I have to drive in from Weoley Castle and park up somewhere? I won't be there until about 5.45ish

We'll still be there then Glide - 5pm is just a rough time to meet up. On previous meets, forumers have still turned up an hour or two after the initial meeting time.

Yes I had a great time - surreal to say the least; though it was good putting faces and personalities to the 15 forumites who turned up; the only problem I have now is to remember who's who; psudonym and real name - I'm crap enough at names as it is.
I hear you are as elusive as the loch ness monster though - perhaps a show of your face next time eh?
I think you'll find the next few posts may be worse than yours grammatically, as when I left at 10pm, those left appeared to be settled in for a little while longer.

Then later, met back up with us to make sure that we'd find our way to the meet up properly. Not to mention, he set the whole thing up!

And after everything was all said and done...mk61 made sure Medo and I got a cab back to the hotel for a reasonable price and walked Rick back to his! Couldn't believe how nice and helpful everyone was!

I might be tempted to make a first apperance and get to meet you all for the first time. Only thing is i'm a bit worried about meeting people from online. I hear they often turn out to be much older than they claim and then try to do unspeakable things to you.. they rarely turn out to match the image they describe. Engels, your concerns are understood, so I will be totally honest with you ok?
Here goes: I am 38, very good looking, clean shaven - all over, and hey, I even smell nice too.
I'm looking for a nice younger man to have lots of laughs with. Perhaps after the meet up, we could go somewhere a little more, um, intimate and enjoy each other's company.
There ya go, Engels, totally honest and upfront. So now you know what you'll be expecting, at least from me; so no nasty surprises; you're amongst friends.

Oh, by the way Engels, you don't happen to like the smell of carpet underla...aww crap, now look what you made me do.

Sorry Mr G I'm not the carpet er tasting type....

Having said that if you are lying and turn out to be a good looking 21 year old girl called Mandy instead.... ;)

... then i might just be tempted to cheat on my girlfriend as she is rather bored of hearing me drone on about this and that building and what needs to be done with this city by now.

Oh, You were telling the truth weren't you. Never mind.

Yes, 25th is the date, time for a roll call methinks. Add your name if you're coming (i'll leave the venue/time to a brummie to sort out as i'm not all that familiar with the best spots)

Slimeyface, get your gun ready - i'm guna have to pull out. To cut a long story short, too many engagements this month coupled with limited finances. One of these engagements is in Birmingham though - i'm around on the 28th to see Snow Patrol at the NIA.

No worries Dean. We'll be having another meet up in the New Year sometime which I'm sure you'll be able to make! I'm still up for a few pints on the 25th (though I can't go too mad due to lack of funds) so someone name a time and a venue and we'll see how it goes from there!

Hope you all had a good time! Sorry I couldn't make it - though the wife's not had the baby yet, I didn't think it would have been the best move to leave her on her own, cause the late stages of pregnancy are proving a bit tough for her.

I should be at the next one.

Myself, Smiley and then Rigadon made an appearance for half an hour.
Got there about 4.20pm - nearly missed Smiley, he had been waiting already, and was about to leave.
Why is it that the one time I want to get the train, the service is friggin' suspended? WTF man! Had to endure a 63 bus from Longbridge to Town - eeuw :ohno:

So basically we both slagged everyone off - and we hate you all for not turning up you miserable mofos... and parted at 9ish, 6 pints of Fosters and Guinness later. Apart from that, yeah, a good chinwag was had by all.

Erebus, get your missus, or another willing participant to walk on your back for a bit. That'll sort it.

Failing that, some constipation tablets - hmm, yes, I think that should do it

I finally got up the photos of Birmingham Medo and I took the day after the huge meet up. It's in the UK Skyscrapers and Skylines section. We only managed to go around the Bullring really, but I certainly enjoyed what I got to see of the city. I want to have a longer visit as soon as possible. Hope you guys enjoy them.

Also, sorry I couldn't make it to the last meet up...it was a distance thing really. Next time we can have it in Birmingham, Alabama, maybe? ;)

The next meet up, which hopefully will be attended by a few more mortals, I am thinking around the first week in Feb?
Not necessarily a Saturday as I know many have weekend commitments, so maybe a weekday. If anyone interested can give some feedback as to what you would prefer; I know it's a way off yet, but I reckoned on giving plenty of notice before the diaries start filling up.
Anyway, being the first one of 2007 should give us plenty of talking points, should developers use the new year to announce some solid start dates on various projects we've been holding our breath for (even A*** C***)

I work weekdays but given enough notice I could get a day off - if it is a weekday though, i'd recommend a Friday as then we wont all be hungover at work the following day!

That rules me out then. I'd prefer to have a picnic in Sutton Park with all of us sitting in a circle on travel rugs eating Marmite sandwiches and drinking Ribena (alternatives provided). We would later play frisby followed by a game or two of rounders.

I would stand and watch.

Yes you may, as long as you offer it round for those who'd prefer something a little stronger than Ribena.

I'd never find my way to your picnic in Sutton Park.

Yes you would. Get on the M54 at your local junction, head east onto the M6 and then come off the M6 at Junction 7. Turn right at the big island (as if heading for Brum) then take the first left at the giant crossroads and follow the signs for Sutton Park.

You have no excuse now. :nono: ;)
