I think Sendai is too green

I prefer no trees on the streets in Japan (yes I know I don't live there)

What city in Japan has the least trees on the streets?

Japan - Human oriented Democratic Liberalism of Sapporo vs Practical and Bureaucratic Nationalism of Tokyo - two biggest thoughts of modern days Japan were originated and have developed in Sapporo and Tokyo speeched by the chairman of Tokyo University:

The world's most advanced commercial-use freezer technology - Thermodynamic Systems, Sapporo (1st June 2005)

Here are some pictures I took yesterday at Moerenuma Park (モエレ沼公園) in Sapporo's northeastern industrial suburbs. According to the Japan Times (http://www.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/getarticle.pl5?fa20051013a1.htm), the park cost about $250 million dollars to complete.

The park was designed by Isamu Noguchi just before he died in late 1988, and his students and Sapporo city officials complete the plan in 2004. It is built on a former waste disposal site.

More park information (日本語で)is here: (http://www.sapporo-park.or.jp/moere/)

My #1 form of transportation when traversing through Sapporo. I usually take it during the weekends when I'm not busy with studying esp. since they have the ドニチカ/weekend one day subway pass avaliable for just 500円. :D

I like Sapporo Dome. The architect is Hiroshi Hara, the same as Kyoto Station.
Indeed the Sapporo Dome is beautiful. I have yet to check it out though I'm sure I will eventually since I have a friend that lives nearby the Dome and Fukuzumi Station.

Today's Sakhalin (Karafuto).

Sakhalin has been disputed whether being Japan or Russia for long time. Anyway, these are from the Sakhalin's sightseeing booklet from Hokkaido. Here's the land of Eurasia!

Toyohara (Japanese)/Yuzhno Sakhalinsk (Russian), the capital of Sakhalin Prefecture. The cities in Sakhalin also take the grid style streets just like in Hokkaido, modelled after Sapporo. It's known as "Little Sapporo".

Indeed it is an experience! Our school has a dormitory so no host family stay for me but it's still great to experience this nevertheless! I'll try to get some of my own shots of the Snow Festival this Friday when I have the chance. Unfortunately my school schedule doesn't allow me to do so during the week. :\

You can try to "refresh" the page. Maybe the ones already loaded will remain in the cache, so they will not need to be reloaded, and the rest of the pictures can load faster...

Oh I see.

But unfortunately, there are no connections from Japan to Sakhalin (and vice-versa) except for flights and by sea travel.

I was hoping that the Japanese government would at least provide funding for a USD$50 billion link between Sakhalin and Hokkaido. Or if not, some construction company could at least come up with funding.

That would be neat and would help both Japan and Russia through the Hokkaido-Sakhalin rail and landbridge link (especially to Sakhalin)

Although Hokkaido has the famous Asahikawa Furniture showrooms (they make presentations at Milano Salone and Köln Messe every year), there is also a number of Scandinavian stores as well. They are purely Sapporo only showrooms, and you cannot find them elsewhere in Japan. IKEA opened in Chiba and Yokohama this year, but I don't think it will ever come to Hokkaido's market. It's already enough for that category here.

It will never happen. The government has already spent astronomically for Hokkaido, whose total amount of debt is over 600 billion yen, the third largest in the country after Tokyo and Osaka (and the second largest per head). I even doubt whether Shinkansen reaches Sapporo in the near future. We don't need them really, rather, should be spent for expanding Chitose Airport, which can potentially become the largest airport in Japan. :)

Hokkaido gets a lot of hints from Scandinavia. The motto is however, do not immitate them but to absorb them to match the life style in Hokkaido. But clearly there are many borrowings from Scandinavia.

500 meter tower for Sapporo??

http://www.hokkaido-np.co.jp/Php/backnumber.php3?&d=20061109&j=0035

Study group formed for Sapporo TV Tower skyscraper project 2006/11/09 13:58

Hokkaido Kanko Jigyo, the managing company of Sapporo’s 147.2-meter-high landmark structure -- the Sapporo TV Tower -- will form a study group in the near future with outside specialists to consider reconstructing the tower into a skyscraper. Taking advantage of the 50th anniversary of the sending of radio waves in December, the company intends to discuss the project with a view to rebuilding the tower into a 500-meter-high building.

The plan has been made with the aim of regaining the position as the tallest building in Hokkaido way into the 21st Century. The glory is currently held by the 173-meter-high JR Tower in Chuo Ward, Sapporo, which started business in 2003. By reconstructing the tower into a building, sports facilities and offices among others will be able to occupy the building as well as its present shops and sightseeing facilities. In addition, it is also intended to claim back the function of sending TV waves, which was handed over to Mt. Teine (elevation: 1,024 m).

The society was founded by the company, employees of major general contractors, specialists in city planning and financial-related experts. The possibility of reconstruction will be probed while examining construction methods and financing techniques.

The people in Hakodate are renown for being very rough. There are many teenage gangs (Bousouzoku or Teamer) and if you see the Hakodate car number plate in Naichi (Honshu), better watch out! Several cases have been reported so far that the Kansai-jin tourists were stabbed to death by them. . . Also, Hakodate Station and Goryokaku (The Fortress) areas are notorious for drug dealing and gun smuggling, partly from Russia.

HOLY SHIT!!!!

There are buildings on top of a valley?!?!?!?

Wow. This is the first time I've ever seen strucutres rising from a valley/agricultural plain.

A world first! This is truly unbelievable.

No one has ever attempted constructing buildings in front of a mountain pass or valley simply because of the fear that it would create if a landslide or any snowfall (during Winter time) could decimate the area.

But this is just mindblowing and unexpected.

I've never seen any other attempt to build rising structures on a mountain/valley.............until seeing this one right now.

Totally defying convention.

I think this deserves more attention.

I do admit that I am memerized by it. Mesmerized in a sense that it is very RARE and UNUSUAL for buildings to be built in countryside locations such as this one.

Guys,

What are your opinions about these buildings? Any comments/suggestions/feedback is accepted.

I just want to know about the public's opinion (especially the opinion of the Japanese here at SSC) regarding these structures on a countryside (which has NEVER seen before in any other place in the world).

Actually those are not residential buildings but these are for the hotel....or simply put a place to stay while in your that ski/golf resort. I'm not sure though if you can reside or live there permanently.

That's why I'd like to know more about these buildings. The homepage is in Japanese and babelfish will give you crappy translations.

It is important that we get as much info as we can about these buildings (which I believe is not available in any other place on earth atm).

Those hotels were built in 1985, when Japan had the "bubble economy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_asset_price_bubble)" and lots of money to invest. (So it has nothing to do with the recent popularity of Hokkaido among Australian/Asian tourists.) It was an adventurous plan to built skyscrapers in the middle of the sparsely populated area, targeting tourists from far away (like Tokyo). The plan, however, turned out to be a miserable failure. Not many Tokyoites dared to go to the ski resort so far away, which had towers and virtually nothing else. The company that managed the 40% of the buildings in the resort went bankrupt in 1998, while the another that had the 60% also went under in 2003. After that, different 2 companies acquired the resort and still continue the business now. I hope the current influx of foreign tourists makes the situation a little better for them.

Interesting. Since you are not a Tokyoite, you have no right criticising of it. Can you think on your feet? Sapporo's GDP is 3 times larger, per capita GDP is twice as larger than Saitama. Saitama is merely a bedtown of Tokyo, while Sapporo has its own stock exchange just like Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka.

Car burglary No.2 after Osaka
Drunk related crimes No.1 in Japan
Sexually related crimes No.1 in Japan
Car accidents No.1 in Japan
Fraud acts No.1 in Japan
The number of psychopaths No.1 in Japan
The number of suicides No.2 in Japan

And so on. . .

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you are talking about at all.

Firstly, I was not trying to "criticize" anything. Those facts already happened, and I reported it in a flat tone.

Secondly, I don't understand why you can't "criticize" the matter, if you are not Tokyoite. The fact that I live in Saitama Prefecture, which is nothing but the part of Greater Tokyo Area, makes your words even harder to understand.

Thirdly, I don't understand why you suddenly have to compare Sapparo and Saitama City (I guess you are referring to the city, although I'm not living in there... with such a stupid hiragana name! >( ). No, I was not writing anything about Sapporo nor Saitama City, not to mention comparing the two cities is kind of pointless as Saitama City is indeed "merely a bedtown of Tokyo", while Sapporo is the biggest city in northern Japan.

Or you just wanted to have "My city is better than yours" type arguing? You better find your friends in 2ch Okunijiman-board then. (And I was born in Hokkaido, anyway...)

Toya Lake is also one of the candidates, where G8 Summit may be taken place in 2008.

According to today's news, Lake Toya in Hokkaido is most promising candidate site for G8 Summit in 2008, since National Police Agency strongly recommends it for security reason. In the past, Tokyo (1979. 1986.1993) and Okinawa (2000) hosted G8 Summit.
Currently Kyoto, Yokohama, and Hokkaido bid for G8 Summit place next year.

I have a question about Hokkaido:

With a population of 5 million Hokkaido is quite sparsely populated. Why is that? Aren't japanese people willing to get out of the big city madness etc.?
So is it because there are hardly jobs available on Hokkaido? Or maybe construction is restricted in most areas because of national parks etc.?? Or what is the reason?!

It is the COLDEST area in Japan.

This is true. It lies near Sakhalin (which connects to the cold areas of mainland Russia) and it is DAMN cold all-year long.

However, once you go down south to the Okinawa Islands and the entire south-east Japan, it becomes the opposite.

Note: My answer is just a guess, and may contain lots of errors.

With a population of 5 million Hokkaido is quite sparsely populated. Why is that?

The biggest reason, I presume, is because Hokkaido was (even more) sparsely populated until 19th century. The island (except of Matsumae-han) was only inhabited by Ainu people, who were mainly hunters. It means they couldn't sustain large population like Yamato (=mainland) Japanese could. The population increased after Japanese began immigration + reclamation, only 200 years ago.
Hokkaido does not have a large population, simply because it did not from the start.

Aren't japanese people willing to get out of the big city madness etc.?

Even in mainland Japan, "Big cities" are just (Greater-) Tokyo, Osaka, and possibly Nagoya. Other places are not that crowded.
Hokkaido is a very nice place to visit, but its inconvenience, the cold climate, and the lack of jobs as you mentioned, all make immigrating not very easy. People still did move to Hokkaido in early 20th century, when many Japanese were unemployed farmers (they reclaimed the island), but nowadays, most Japanese are not farmers. Most of them don't have a good reason to move to Hokkaido, but to big cities.

But more and more retiring office workers in Tokyo & Osaka are moving to Hokkaido and Okinawa so as to spin out their retirement in those wonderful places calmly. (IMO, Tokyoites are more attracted to Okinawa, on the other hand, Osakans are to Hokkaido.)

Indeed Hokkaido is damned cold in winter, but it has no rainy season and is ultimately brisk in summer. Needless to say, the food there are great.

I recommend foreigners (especially people from humid Asian countries) to travel Hokkaido (might be better than Honshu). I might be biased but from my own experience, Hokkaido is much more beautiful than Canada or New Zealand. Journey by local train is good but traveling by rent-a-car, bike or motorcycle are also great. Generally people in Hokkiado are gentle and kind to the travelers.

If you are looking for a vacation spot in Japan (that is away from the bustling city life of Japanese cities), then Hokkaido is one neat place to visit.

STOP SHINKANSEN

Shinkansen is not necessary in Hokkaido. The construction should not be carried on any further than Hakodate, or will devastate the island otherwise. The airports already have enough capacity to connect to the other parts of the country. The island must remain untouched. The people in Sapporo are stupid enough to wish becoming like Tokyo one day, the slave of money to be sucked dry. It's evil. They don't even know where everything goes and what everything is intended to. Don't get into it more than it should be. Hokkaido is a very young island and can choose before anything can happen. I'm very worried about him going down the wrong path. If Shinkansen lands on the island, the cute creatures will lose their color and messed up by somebody else, the most unwelcomed one. It will not become any richer but only become poorer. Please young man, it is not a bright idea at all, as it seems, but only a dark choice. I don't understand why Hokkaido wants to survive and why sticking to it, even by accepting the dirty concretes. It is like drinking the poison. Gullible folks. Need to be on your own. Never depend on him and give him the choice all under his control. Depending on the inferior only makes you becoming the same as him.

Oh and finally, I like the idea, that Hokkaido and Honshu are entirely different, not a part of each other. It's oil and water, never be the same. Honshu is too much of a complex that can never be imported into Hokkaido, which will destroy the island. Need to keep some distance. Get rid of all the crap comes from Honshu.

I always think you talk a bit strange, far from the reality. Perhaps you should only be talking about Tokyo, not the other places. Because you obviously don't know very well.

But more and more retiring office workers in Tokyo & Osaka are moving to Hokkaido and Okinawa so as to spin out their retirement in those wonderful places calmly.
I don't think that many people from Honshu come to Hokkaido and spending the life after the retirement. What kind of people do you think exactly come over to Hokkaido? Are they doing what? Absolutely nothing to do in there. Boring life is awaited.

Indeed Hokkaido is damned cold in winter, but it has no rainy season and is ultimately brisk in summer. Needless to say, the food there are great.
I don't think being cold is a negative factor. If Hokkaido is humid and rainy, who would want to come? That kind weather makes you tired, don't you think? And I don't think the foods are very nice. Which food in Hokkaido do you think is nice? I like none of them. All of them are yuck in my opinion. I'd rather go to McDonalds.

I recommend foreigners (especially people from humid Asian countries) to travel Hokkaido (might be better than Honshu).
Honshu is better wouldn't it? It has a lot better infrastructure to accommodate them. I mean what you would expect from the rural folks? They are extremely ignorant. The people mostly are not interested even the people from Honshu.

Journey by local train is good but traveling by rent-a-car, bike or motorcycle are also great.
There is no decent train network there, and even road network. You pick up some nice photographs but they are only a minor portion of Hokkaido. Most part of this island is not as beautiful as you imagine.

Generally people in Hokkiado are gentle and kind to the travelers.
Generally, who for instance?

I've returned from the holiday in Hokkaido. I pictured some 700+ photographs (which most of them are terribly jiggled) and I'd like to share some of them which are still not THAT bad.

Rides:
As a rail buff, my natural choice was to use railways all the way from Saitama to Hokkaido. (In case you didn't know, it is generally considered insane to use rails on that distance. :) ) These are the things I used during the trip.

Super Hakucho, between Aomori and Hakodate. (I forgot to take a picture of Tohoku Shinkansen, BTW.)

Shiretoko, a rapid train between Kushiro and Abashiri.
http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/2751/p1000290ka5.jpg

Not something I rode, but I happened to see the DMV (Dual Mode Vehicle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_mode_transit)) tested on Senmo Main Line.

Okhotsk, between Abashiri and Asahikawa.

Super Soya, between Sapporo and Wakkanai.
http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/9207/p1000591os8.jpg

Sarobetsu, between Wakkanai and Sapporo.
So it runs the same route as Super Soya. Although Super Soya is supposed to be the superior train, its "air suspension" tilting system made me literaly sick. Yeah, I did :puke: . If you are the one who easily gets a train sickness, avoid Super Soya at all costs.

Wakkanai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wakkanai%2C_Hokkaid%C5%8D):
The sole raison d'etre of this city is the fact it's the northernmost point of Japan (if you ignore the Northern Territories (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuril_Islands_dispute) that are currently administrated by Russia, claimed by Japanese government). But hey, I do like that kind of geographical trivia. :)

Inside the shop, there's something called Ryuhyokan (Drift Ice Pavilion)... what's that?
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/9168/p1000439bt1.jpg

It was a not-so-large room with drift ices and some stuffed specimens. So this is the northernmost museum! Well, a sort of.
http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/5882/p1000417yf3.jpg

But it is rather scary to be alone in a quiet cold room like this with stuffed specimens... I guess the atmosphere was totally different in a crowded season.

Biei (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biei%2C_Hokkaid%C5%8D):

Sapporo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sapporo%2C_Hokkaid%C5%8D):
The capital of Hokkaido, and the city with the largest population in northern Japan.

Sapporo Station.
http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/936/p1000817lu0.jpg

The city sure is developed, but its scape is a kind of boring as it's more or less a scaled-down version of Tokyo.
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/7842/p1000813je4.jpg

You even have a scaled-down Tokyo Tower (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sapporo_TV_Tower) here. :|
http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/5497/p1000831vr4.jpg

This building (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sapporo_Clock_Tower) is arguably the most famous tourist atraction in Hokkaido, as well as one of the three "most disappointing" tourist attraction all Japan.
http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/3014/p1000824us9.jpg

This one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Former_Hokkaid%C5%8D_government_office_building), the former Hokkaido Government Office, has a small-but-nice museum inside.
http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/8141/p1000818az1.jpg

H Univ. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hokkaido_University) is the university which those Dobutsu no Oisha-san (http://www.mit.edu/~rei/MANGA/Doubutsu.html) bunches attended.
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/8813/p1000798gu3.jpg

And Hiragishi Takadai Park is the "sacred place" for How Do You Like Wednesday? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_do_you_like_Wednesday%3F) fans like me. For others, it is an unnoticeable small park in suburban Sapporo.
http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/8010/p1000845xg6.jpg

A night view of the city from Mt. Moiwa (via an aerial tramway) was unexpectedly good. The poor picture below doesn't do justice to the magnificent view. It is highly recommended for Sapporo visitors.
http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/5132/p1000785uq2.jpg

...but be prepared for the observatory filled with screaming highschool brats... erm, cheerful youths, I mean.

Views from Hakodate Main Line.

Hakodate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hakodate%2C_Hokkaid%C5%8D):
A historic and touristic city in southern Hokkaido. By the way, I was born here. :)

Hakodate Station.
Near the station (and in some other places in the city), there is a hamburger store chain popular among locals, called "Lucky Pierrot (http://www.luckypierrot.jp/)". Try Chinese Chicken Burger. Very nice.
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/5201/p1000240nc1.jpg

A group of photogenic residences, albeit with a questionable harmony.
You rarely see a building like the right one (traditional Japanese style) in most other parts of Hokkaido.

A slope.
http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/9930/p1000879kx9.jpg

http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/5757/p1000884sn9.jpg

A famous church (http://mukur.blog66.fc2.com/blog-entry-14.html).
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/8739/p1000894bj9.jpg

I believe I saw this building in Noein (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noein).
http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/4100/p1000923wt0.jpg

Former warehouses (http://www.hakodate-kanemori.com/) are now refurbished and filled with Harajuku-esque fancy stores.
http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/6554/p1000934ot5.jpg

The port and the mountain.
http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/7528/p1000936vo7.jpg

Another spectacular night view.
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/1395/p1000904wu5.jpg

...with another group of screaming highschoolers, of course.

These pictures, across all Hokkaido, are things I found interesting, or kinda exotic.

Because of the climate, glass porches are common in Hokkaido and northern Tohoku, especially in northern/eastern Hokkaido.
http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/6595/p1000475tw2.jpg

http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/8600/p1000476bq7.jpg

But isn't this a litlle too much?
http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/7674/p1000582za1.jpg

"Stop line". The sign may look pointless now, but it will be important after snows hide lines on roads.
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/1992/p1000462cv7.jpg

Road shoulder sign, another important thing in snowy area.
http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/4756/p1000474sw6.jpg

"Non-skid sand"
http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/2770/p1000837nl5.jpg

No need to explain.
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/4844/p1000663yb7.jpg

"When you have 'Genghis Khan (http://pirokowisdom.blogspot.com/2005/11/jingisukan-genghis-kahn.html)' barbecue party, make sure you put left coals here." at Hokkaido University.
The smaller sign says "You can't have 'Genghis Khan' barbecue party unless you are school officials/students."
http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/3189/p1000807pc8.jpg

"Watch out for the falling snow!"
http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/4719/p1000577bf1.jpg

"Business Hotel (http://wikitravel.org/en/Japan#Business_hotels), Family". I sense some sort of contradiction here.

OMG! r those ice structure natural or man made?
They are natural, It's snow covered trees. This is the reason trees in northern areas are usually quite narrow - to withstand strong winds and heavy snow.

That forest is an amazing sight!

北海道阿寒湖にあるアイヌ村です。ふくろうは守り神です。
神社は元々は自然が神だったので共通するものがありますね。

scary earthquake this morning.

At least two people have been killed and eight injured by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake which struck the north of Japan's main island, officials say.

I like the savage and raw nature of Hokkaido and Tohoku. Also, Sapporo seems like a neat and well-organised city (I could be wrong, though).

Sapporo may have plans to build a 650-metre TV tower that would eclipse Tokyo's Sky Tree.

I don't want to double-post, but is a proposed TV tower outside of Tokyo whose height exceeds that of Tokyo's new TV Tower a stupid thing?
