Still winter here :( so I took the chance to go downtown to take some pics. Let's see how they turned out, shall we? :)

First tho, a few shots of my 'burb
Steppin' out the door
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/01.JPG

walkin' to the subway (my old junior high on the left)
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/02.JPG

Tallest building in Scandinavia towering behind the local church
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/03.JPG

Ärvingegången - one of the many pedestrian strets in my 'hood - it was all planned to seperate viechles from pedestrians as much as possible
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/04.JPG

The train from the City, just two stations left to go (big mall here, hence all the people)
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/05.JPG

Recenetly renovated, that church. Can't remember what king it's named for right now.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/06.JPG

Crossed that^ street, looked right - all the splendour of Kungsträdgården (the King's Garden, which it actually was once upon a time) in winter
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/07.JPG

Looking left instead, Södermalm (Southside) in the back on the cliff, Old Town on the right & Gustav III standing dead center
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/08.JPG

..and that's Karl XII pointing to yonder Russia
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/09.JPG

Denmark's House. Probably the embassy, not sure.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/10.JPG

I count four islands. On the left edge Riksdagen (national parliament) on the right UD (state department) and the headless rider is Gustav II Adolf (aka Gustavus Adolphus aka Lion of the North)
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/13.JPG

The beauty that is rebuilding a subway entrence in a 60s building
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/15.JPG

I call it "Where's the bus?"
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/16.JPG

Malmskilnadsgatan, possibly the Inner City street with the worst rep. Funny thing is, it's got Stockholm's oldest skyscarpers, the central bank, big DT shopping center and two major bank's HQs on it. Go figure.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/17.JPG

Boring, empty side-street.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/18.JPG

Slighlty less boring, less empty side-street. So let's walk it.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/19.JPG

Only saw chinese stuff in there tho
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/20.JPG

At the end of that street. the 50s and 60s were golden decades in architecture.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/21.JPG

Aaah, that's better.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/22.JPG

looking back from the very end of the street. It really is beautiful in DT Stockholm.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/23.JPG

Ok, so it's not that bad. The new-looking buildings on the left are just multi-storey parking turned into housing.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/24.JPG

Can't beat late winter to bring out the beauty of concrete overpasses.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/25.JPG

A Volvo and a Saab! what are the odds? (pretty good actually). Buildings on the left are on the Knight's Isle, in the way back is Södermalm.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/27.JPG

Another Volvo! (oh yeah, you think of somthing funny/interesting to write with tis pic;))
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/28.JPG

Centralstation = Central Station, Gustav Adolfs Torg = Gustavus Adolphus' Square, Gamls Stan = the Old Town
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/29.JPG

Finally getting some scenic qualities in here
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/30.JPG

and tey keep comming!
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/31.JPG

City Hall (from 1921)
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/32.JPG

Gotta have an elevated street and rail combo cutting thru Old Town, don't ya? (that's the old commuter rail, getting new ones later this year).
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/33.JPG

See what I mean? Lovely!
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/34.JPG

Those red picket fences up there belong to a daycare center. Gotta be amazing views from the flats in those buildings right on the cliff.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/35.JPG

Högalidskyrkan. Can't translate it, since I don't know what it means (apart from -kyrkan = the...church).
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/36.JPG

Underneath Centralbron (the elevated street/rail)
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/37.JPG
There have been proposals to do a Big Dig thing with it on and of for decades. All that is actually going to happen is a new tunnel for the commutertrains (but the rails are for intercity trains to, so everything stays).
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/38.JPG

Scenic again!
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/39.JPG

looks like weeds, but is planted (there were 4 more clumps). Not sure what the idea is.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/40.JPG

Cold, dreary friday afternoon in mid March. Hence the empty streets. Oh, and that Kungsholmen (the King's Isle) across the bridge.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/41.JPG

City Hall again, with the only set of Stockholm flags I know of.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/42.JPG

Looking back across Riddarfjärden (the water, last part of lake Mälaren before running into the Baltic Sea by the Old Town)
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/43.JPG

last building on the shore before the naked cliff has an elevator that used to be a cheap n' easy way to get up/down from Södermalm (opened in the late 1800s).
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/44.JPG

Closer look at the City flag
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/45.JPG

St. Erik, noted for his crusades in Finland and the well that instantly sprung up where he was assasinated.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/47.JPG

Didn't we just see this view? :)
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/49.JPG

Slussen, where Södermalm (Southide) meets Gamla Stan (Old Town). Been remodeld many times over the centuries, and supposed to be done again soon.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/50.JPG

again with the repeats :D
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/51.JPG

Södermalm has its share of ugly 60s buildings too.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/52.JPG

Entrence to the inner courtyard of City Hall from the street. The lake side is a double row of collumns.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/53.JPG

A "trunk-line" bus. IMO these 4 lines should be replaced with LRT/trams.
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/54.JPG

Regular bus. And a Volvo!
http://web.telia.com/~u87519938/20050318/56.JPG

Hantverkargatan, on the King's Isle, featuring the flag of Stockholm's County (just a combo of the heraldry of Stockholm City, Södermanland and Uppland - the provinces to the south and north)

nope i wouldn't think so. The EU flag is not very common in this country :(

@swede, why is st.Erik on the stockholms flags anyway? Stockholm was founded 100 years after the died

Nice pics! Stockholm`s good feature is that it`s located to many islands. I`m
not sure if I like 60`s building, maybe they should renovate and change the colour of 60`s buildings.

And about the winter, don't worry, looks like spring is comming here now so it'll probably be in Sweden soon too. :D

@Ringil - not sure why he is our parton saint, but he's been so from the start. How he survived the reformation (i.e. the heraldry wasn't re-done) is a bit strange too.

@ch1le - yeah, a boatride is a good idea for tourists (and locals who haven't done it before:)). The sightseeing boats start at Kungsträdgården :D

@all y'all - thanks for all the praise :)

One of my favourite things about Stockholm's waterfront is that in many places the buildings form a "vertical cliff" instead of the usual boring straight line. Good stuff and comments. I really appreciated the Kista pics, too.
