Post here the info and news about such transport systems from your city & country.

Specifically, I was wondering about the lenght of tram, trolley and commuter rail systems in other cities of Eastern Europe.

In Serbia & Montenegro, a bus oriented country ever since World War II (just Serbia has three bus manufacturers, Ikarbus in Zemun, Neobus in Novi Sad and FAP in Priboj and at least two other mini-bus producers) only Belgrade has a tram system - which as of 2003, is 127.3 kilometers in lenght, if official city transport company's website is to be trusted. But more cities are now planning to introduce trams.

Two weeks ago, there was some sort of international trolleybus conference n Belgrade. Among others, Polish manufacturer "Solaris" was present and they brought their latest "Trollino" to be tested on Belgrade streets. While it left a good impression on everyone - very comfortable with lots of space - it was deemed too expensive for the city, at least for now.:(

During this year, Belgrade will recieve 10 new trolleys each from Russia & Belarus(200k euros per vehicle), and Greek city of Athens is donating the city with 30 of their older trolleys, which have been completely re-built prior to Athens Summer Olympics.

Article about this (in Serbian) - entitled "New trolleybus, but its not for us":D

Sofia's public transport SKGT is among the busiest in Europe (according to mayor Sofianski)
of course, buses have the most extensive network
http://www.skgt-bg.com/History/images/bus7_b.jpg
there are some private lines that use MAN lowfloor buses.
most widely used are Mercedes Benz Connecto/0 345, delivered b/n 1999 and 2004
http://www.skgt-bg.com/History/images/bus8_b.jpg
There are some old Mercedes buses, the first non-Icarus viechles in the fleet after 1989. They are scarce
http://www.skgt-bg.com/History/images/bus9_b.jpg
Some Bulgarian made Chavdar buses
http://www.skgt-bg.com/History/images/bus6_b.jpg
MAN SL232
http://www.skgt-bg.com/History/images/bus10.jpg
and, of course, Ikarus 280 (no picture on the SKGT site...)

Tram network is the first electrical system on the Balkans, currently it's 221km longhttp://www.skgt-bg.com/History/images/tram10_b.jpg
there are narrow and normal gauge lines
CKD t6a2-BG, most common
http://www.skgt-bg.com/History/images/tram9_b.jpg
Bulgarian made Tramkar t6???M
http://www.skgt-bg.com/Structure/images/tramkar1_b.jpg
some retro looking Duvag cars

Trolleys are also very common 105km network

Ikarus 280T is the only type on the trolley fleet
http://www.skgt-bg.com/History/images/trolley4_b.jpg
There are no commuter trains in Sofia, another means of transport are the Subway and the cable cars ( :D )

GSP recently purchased 20 Mercedes buses. I'm not sure which model.

Procurement of 20 buses for Belgrade’s GSP granted to "Mercedes"

Mayor of Belgrade (www.beograd.org.yu), Nenad Bogdanovic, stated that contract on procurement of 20 buses for City Transportation Company "Beograd" (www.gsp.co.yu) was assigned to "Mercedes Benz" (www.mercedes-benz.com). Total worth of the deal is around € 3.3 m.

Zagreb new trams TMK 2200 http://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/hr/trams/Zagreb/ZET_2200_1_marko_kacic.jpg
New trams are 32m long, 2.5m wide, have 48 seats and another 120 standing positions. Price per tram is 1.6 millUS$ or Euros not sure…

Zagreb has requested 70 of this trams first to be delivered with next 2 moths, there is a great likelihood city will replace all its trams with this new one and as a result order another batch of 100-150 trams.

It is very probable this trams will also grace Osijek’s streets with in few years and potential for exports is great…

Rijeka and Split if they introduce tram lines would also be potential customers for this tram.

News on Ljubljana's trams? Where?

As far as I know, they are going to build a funicular up to Ljubljana Castle.. The trams are a long way from coming, first they have to build the new PCL (central station), then they have to decide whether to have a tram system, a metro system or an underground tram system (wtf?). I say metro is best, but underground tram could work fine too, as it wouldn't look as bad when above ground in the suburbs..

Above-ground trams would suck, because there is a lack of space in the centre of Ljubljana and the trams would only make it worse..

Singidum , this are old trams but it is better than none, I assume you going to get new trams sometimes soon, how many trams lines are there in Belgrade ?

Nice trolley’s my Question to you is , Is Ikarus Serbian company, why don’t they build Belgrade’s trolley’s.

Same with buses, with this you support domestic industry and jobs…

Just a thought….

$183 million is being invested this year in the tram system. This will involve a reconstruction of the network, refurbishment of a lot of the old trams, and the purchase of new ones. In addition, as KM said earlier, we're getting a few refurbished trams from Athens. Currently there are 228 trams in Belgrade, but with the purchase of the new ones it should go above 300. The total length of the tram network in Belgrade is 122 km.

Ikarbus is a Serbian company and a lot of the buses that are purchased are still made by Ikarbus. However, they don't as of yet produce trolleybuses. However, they have made a deal with a Russian company to begin production the trolleybuses.

Singidunum

Not Ikarus but Ikarbus. They produce only buses. GSP usually orders from them but still German made ones are better. I'd say 90% of GSP buses are Serbian made but they are a bit noisy.

About the trams-they will buy some new trams hopefully this or next year but the most important is that light metro will be U/C in 2006. There was a thread on tram reconstruction though.

There are 11 tram lines though they don`t go on 11 different routes. For an example line 10 and line 11 both start from Kalemegdan but later one turns to Novi Beograd and the other turns to Banjica.

How about Zagreb's tram network? How many lines and how long is it?
What are the plans for the future?

Also guys, forget the buses:)
As the thread title says, this topic is only about Trams, Trolleys and Commuter Rail.

Speaking of which, post something about commuter rail!!!

I know Warsaw and Zagreb have extensive networks....

Well, currently Zagreb has 15 tram lines not 17 as I mentioned before (sorry my mistake) and well over 400 trams, (484 - figure by ZET - Zagreb Electric Tram). There are plans for 2 more tram lines...
Most of the current trams (with the exception of 3-section trams entered service 2000-2003) will be withdrawn from service, possible better conditioned trams will be donated to citiy of Sarajevo and Skopje, would be my best guess.

New Trams which where ordered and bought from Cro-Tram Consortium will enter service from May 2005 and current plan calls for 70 new trams, about 10 trams per line, I hazard the guess. But this is only first batch - most likely final number will be well over 200 and this could take time, say by 2010.

City of Zagreb plans to introduce light metro in the city with in next 3-5 years, 5 lines have been proposed but from what I can understand they are still only talking although the money has been secured. I think new light metro will be over 50% underground and 30% would use existing tram network rails, 20% would require new-build.

Don't know how much would all this cost but estimate for all 5 lines is about 25bnHRK (about 4.4bnSU$). I think it will also take time to build about 15 years, so there is plenty of time, lol

But immediate need is to upgrade the tram and bus stock as you know Zagreb has no trolley's, but most of the buses in ZET service are new Mercedes busses, old MAN busses are gradually being withdrawn as they are all over 15 years old.

oh yes just noticed your commuter rail question, Zagreb has extensive rail network and it is being upgraded and extended, currently city has over 50 local trains which serve the city local services and it is very clean and efficient service, although it's trains are constantly sprayed over by graffiti's, a menace which current city government hasn't tackled yet. :)

So not true, but close. :)

Indeed, Belgrade had electric trams introduced in 1894, but other cities in the region (Zagreb, Subotica, etc.) may have gotten them even earlier. :dunno:

Well, we don't have any trams, trolleybuses or commuter rail. We do have buses, but our bus transport system is very scattered and I have no idea where to find any pics. It's nothing special though.

And this is LPP's Regional Routes:

I could post pics of Slovenia's normal trains, though. After all, many are used for commuting, and Slovenia is a small country, so what are national routes for us may be barely regional for others. If you're okay with it, I'll post some..

On a side note, Ljubljana will soon start building a funicular up to the castle, so I may post pics of that when it's finished, in a year or two..

let me contribute with more ICN Bombardier trains in Croatia,

Currently is serving Zagreb - Split, Zagreb Rijeka and Zagreb - Varazdin, more are on order and will expand list of Cities covered by this nice tilting trains, new Intercity trains where also being sought to replace dilapidated stock.

City of Zagreb is looking to expand its network of public transport by adding light metro or light rail - system under consideration would be over 50% underground and approximately 30% would use current tram lines, but rest would needed to be built - primarily connections to Zagreb's suburbs and the airport.

The estimated cost of this project for all 5 lines is 25Bn HRK or 4.4 BnUS$.

They are still discussing the project and most likely go-ahead want be given before 2008.

Interesting that they aren't electric, but diesel.

Here in Slovenia, we have several types of trains..

First of all electric..

1. SŽ 310 (ICS - InterCity Slovenija) - tilting Pendolino high-speed express trains, introduced in 2000.

2. SŽ 312 - New Siemens Desiro trains, entered service in 2002.

3. SŽ 311/315 - Old Polish "gomulke", being phased out of service gradually, replaced by the Desiros.

http://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/si/electric/emu/311-315/315-222.jpg

Diesel:

1. SŽ 711 - Better known as "Zeleni vlak" (Green Train), this trainset is still in usage on non-electrified tracks.

http://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/si/diesel/dmu/711/711_002_Lj.jpg

2. SŽ 713/715 - Still used, no replacement in sight, as it has got a new livery lately. Before it looked like the 813/814 series.

3. SŽ 813/814 - Similar to the 713/715, but with old livery and is mainly used on the Sežana - Nova Gorica - Jesenice route.

There are no publicly announced plans of replacing the diesel trainsets, so they're probably staying around for a couple of years more..

Bombardier trains are both electric and diesel, but btw Zagreb and Split lines (tracks) are not electrified and as a result they only use diesel.

Plans are to electrified all Croatian lines but there is discussion whether it is better to build altogether new lines btw Zagreb-Zadar-Sibenik-Split, project for this line alone would cost 2 BnUS$, money better spent on other projects. But electrifying and upgrading existing tracks (which is being done as we speak) is best option and would be most effective on budget.

With Croatian Motorways covering all the country and major cities by 2008 (1550km motorways) it would be pointless building new high-speed line btw Zagreb and Split.

There are plans to buy new intercity trains and tilting trains from current 22 compositions on order, might as well get to over 50 by 2010. Currently there are only 8 Bombardier trains in active service - 5 more to join by mid June and 9 more next year.

Plans than could call for at least 10 more in 2007 bringing number of ICN trains in service to 32.
Simmens is also offering Desiro trains (same as those in service with Slovenian Railways) to Croatia, HZ (Croatian Railways) might get 10-15 of those by 2008.

edit ------------- SŽ 813/814 and 713/715 are local trains - they look like local trains - they are ok, I think they could be fine for another 10-15 years same with zeleni vlak. :)

Like thouse Pandalion trains they look smart...

Heh, all the diesel trains that are used are more appropriate for local than regional service, but they're used everwyhere where the track isn't electrified. All the main tracks are anyway. I think that we do need more electrified and more two-track routes.

Here's a map showing two-track (red) and one-track (black) routes:
http://www.slo-zeleznice.si/uploads/files/slo_zem_vrsteprog_en.jpg

And here's a map showing the electrified (coloured) and non-electrified tracks (black):
http://www.slo-zeleznice.si/uploads/files/slo_zem_energetika_en.jpg
By the way, the track between Celje and Grobelno is indeed electrified, as the ICS runs on that route on its way between MB and LJ.

SŽ is also renewing most of its tracks, this year they are going to electrify the track from Pragersko to Hodoš. Another project that is planned is a second track to Koper.

However I think that SŽ first wants to modernise its trainsets, then afterwards do the infrastructure. They have signed a contract to buy a number of new freight trains from Siemens, and are getting another shipment of the Desiros soon.

They also have to build the new PCL, which will be the most important train station in Slovenia and will also house their HQ, the 1st phase of the complex is expected to be built by 2008.

A study on a new high-speed railway on the route Venezia - Ljubljana - Graz, Ljubljana - Zagreb and Ljubljana - Budapest is also currently underway.

And on a side note, Slovenia already has 1226 km of railways, are you sure 1500km is the amount planned for Croatia by 2008, Orion? It doesn't sound a lot..

thanx edolen, I don't have map of Croatian railways and don't know how much electrification is there but I know they are doing some upgrades - 2000-2010 plans call for all major links would be double tracked and also be electrified.

Project is worth cool 25bnHRK about 4.5 bnUS$ and when complete - system should allow high speed transit by tilting trains - speeds of 160km are already achieved. Don't know if anything faster is planed in longer term.

High-Speed rail link to Split is considered but at this point is seen no viable and profitable option, at 160-200km/ph train from Zagreb could reach Zadar in 3 hours and split in 4, but this only after modernisation which is due to be completed in 2010.

Priority one is motorway link which you already know is complete all the way to Split - but last 150km from Split to Dubrovnik want be completed before 2008 - new massive bridge about 5km long connection Pelesac with mainland is planed and construction should start in late 2005, with completion date of may 2008.

It is likely all ICN trains currently used for travel to Split and other major cities will than be pushed in to service with Zagreb local services and more suitable and proper Inter city trains would be pushed in to service.
ICN trains are relatively cheep each costing just over 2.5 million US$.

I always thought Belgrade had huge trolley's network, I knew they had medium sized tram network, but always thought they had like 30-40 trolley's lines.

Every major city uses buses, but in less extent I would say, example in Zagreb, Prague, Budapest, Warsaw, they are only to connect areas towards the outskirts where tram network hasn't reached yet, suburbia and smaller districts, main city transport is still trams. Although Zagreb plan's to get light metro system with 5 lines sometimes soon, not before 2008.

Budapest example has loads of trams, metro is main public transport and trams are supplementing metro, but buses play same role as in Zagreb.

Belgrade is a city of 1.6 million inhabitants, (Belgrade, Zemun, Pancevo and suburbia included) I would have thought u would have better public transport network.

If no Czech forumers post any pics of Prague public transport system I would be happy to...

People used to LOVE road transports (cars, cars, cars, trucks, lorries, vans, buses for almost all pax transports, cars, cars, cars etc...) in late Yugo.
City and regional networks are still mainly made of bus lines and bus stations are often bigger than railway stations.
Yugo followed as a "fashionista" the trend of many western countries favouring the road against the rail during the '50 and '60 and it still shows... :(

Closed tramway networks (and don't ever ask me the closed narrow and normal gauge lines :D ) :

there is talk of possible return of tram to Dubrovnik, Pula and Rijeka, Split and Varazdin are also considering introducing the tram.

Croatian main City's population :

Zagreb 800 000 - metro - 1.15 million, City has 15 Tram lines , 2 more under consideration and plans to introduce 5 lines of light metro system. Zagreb is extending current tram lines but it is planning to introduce 2 more lines.

Picture of current Zagreb trams.
http://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/hr/trams/Zagreb/zg_tram_2101_02.jpg

Osijek - 130 000 - metro -180 000, City has 3-4 tram lines - network is being extended and modernised.

Split - 205 000 - metro area 275 00 - 2nd Largest city in Croatia, only well developed network of buses - plans for tram network of 4 lines exist, potential for development of tram probable after 2007.

Rijeka - 170 000 - 225 000 metro area - 3rd largest city in Croatia, largest sea port. Had trams in past most likely city government will reconsider trams very soon, if so 4 tram lines would be required for the city and its suburbs.
Opatija is now part of Rijeka and would probably integrated in to any future tram projects in the city.

Zadar - 82 000 - 150 000 metro area, buses only, could benefit from tram network if so 2 tram lines posible.

Pula - 72 000 - 125 000 metro area - once had trams, what's stoping them having trams again if so one or two lines posible.

Dubrovnik - 51 000 - 108 000 metro area, - tourism at is best, had 1 tram line - discussion started at reviving once city's tram lines.

There are no specific night lines but the buses begin their routes at Bavarski dvor (main station) in the evening and run till about midnight, but that's the only difference. However between midnight and 3 (or 5) there are no bus routes apparently.

I always thought Belgrade had huge trolley's network, I knew they had medium sized tram network, but always thought they had like 30-40 trolley's lines.

Belgrade troley network isn't big for such city, but lines are very intense. For example, on line 29 you have the troley every 3 minutes, and every troley is full. On 8 lines there are 126 troleys (15,75 per line, average lenght of troley line is 7,7 km) IMO Troleys are outdated and the lines shouldn't be build anymore, old can be extended and that was. Future is in light rail metro.

Every major city uses buses, but in less extent I would say, example in Zagreb, Prague, Budapest, Warsaw, they are only to connect areas towards the outskirts where tram network hasn't reached yet, suburbia and smaller districts, main city transport is still trams. [quote]

That is typical for cities in that part of Europe, in Germany there are many very big cities which have much larger Bus network than tram. But they have very extensive S-Bahn system (a kind of subway), so it s a "compensation" for a missing parts with no trams.

[quote]
Belgrade is a city of 1.6 million inhabitants, (Belgrade, Zemun, Pancevo and suburbia included) I would have thought u would have better public transport network.

Pancevo has its own public transport system that doesnt belong to Belgrade and Pancevo is officialy NOT part of Belgrade (IMO it s weird :sleepy: )

Anyway, Belgrade bus transportations is divided in two parts, GSP (Gradski Saobracajni Prevoz) and "Lasta Beograd", "Lasta Beograd" connects suburbs with city and in the city you use GSP for conituing transport. There is beovoz system too, but it s unfortunately not very active (lack of trains).

anyway here some interesting infos about transportation in BGD:

Number of Vehicles/ Number of lines / Lenght of all lines (in km) / average lenght per line

Tram 222 / 12 / 127,3 / 10,6
Troley 126 / 8 / 61,2 / 7,7
Bus 900 (+ privarte firms ca 400 buses, together 1300) / 112 / 1395.2 / 12,5

That are numbers for GSP, there are too ca 400 buses from private bus firms working under coverage of GSP.

Those are ČKD-Tatra T4 (built for ex DDR and Yugoslavia, almost the same thing like T3(all over eastern Europe, especially in ex Czechoslovakia and USSR)), about 95 were bought with about 85 trailers, they travel on routes 4, 6, 7 and 14 with trailers and 15 without a trailer. I read somewhere that they might be sent to Belgrade (they can't go to Sarajevo, Sarajevo runs 1435 mm gauge network, ZG and BG are 1000 mm networks) after TMK-2200 comes.

old tatra or skoda trams - not sure, purchased in early 80's - only 35 survive, very difficult to up-keep. also to be phased out by 2008.

:?
This is ĐuroĐaković prototype (I don't know the type), only one was built and was never massively produced. The trams that should go out of service are ĐĐ T-101, they were built about 1958-63, and they are 2-axle trams, I think one of last still in use. Much of them are already out since the German GT6's came.

The apperance of T-101 is very similar to ĐĐ T-201 built in 1974 and 1975, it is a very powerful tram and comes always with 2 trailers, only a few of them are still in service since some of their parts are being used to make TMK-2100

http://p.vtourist.com/2010881-Other-Zagreb.jpg

There are also 50 ČKD-Tatra KT4 built around 1985, they are planned to be fully reconstructed, money for the reconstruction is already assured.

There are still some old MAN-Avtomontaža buses, but now the most of them are MAN and Mercedes-Benz low-floor buses (MAN NM,NL,NG 2 and 3, MB O405 N and NG, O530), there are also a few old O305 (G) and SL/SG 2 bought used from Germany

TMK 2100 stats, Lenght 27.4m Width: 2.2m Max speed 58km, capacity: 44 seating and 120 standing. No in service: 20+

TMK 2100 - Trams - enterd service in 2000, serving on two lines, 11 and 17.

OK, although this post is a year+ old, I have to correct Mic:

First tram of the 2100 series entered service in 1994, and there are 16 in service. And it's actually an upgraded tram of the DJDJ 201 series.
