I'd be willing to bet Miami's much larger than gold coast(including Miami Beach, which in itself is probably larger)

The Gold Coast has no 500 footers as yet, although a couple are U/C. I think De Snor was talking about Miami beach (not Miami's CBD) which, believe me (been to both), is nowhere near the size of the Gold Coast in terms of high-rise.
SeeMacau January 8th, 2003, 03:46 AM A pretty nice city
9/10
d_mexx January 8th, 2003, 07:18 AM are most of those buildings resorts or anything like that???
reminds alot of a resort city
breezyboy69 January 8th, 2003, 11:12 AM yeah there are only a handfull of commercial highrises in the gold coast, they are mostly either resorts/hotels or apartments. the gold coast is a tourist city
Rainier Meadows January 9th, 2003, 06:35 AM This Skyline stretches across the horizon - and for that it's impressive - I will consider this a seasonal community (ex. Myrtle Beach) so therefore will be lenient on grading - I'm sure the hotels appreciate the little distance between each other so as to be seen! ;)
9/10

As for the skyline, it is ok. 7/10. But when Q1 gets built, prolly be 8 or so...
renell January 31st, 2003, 10:38 PM a not so interesting skyline. Q1 looks great though. 7.5 for having Australia's future tallest
mookiecece January 31st, 2003, 10:47 PM looks kinda like Miami, many highriese but the style is too plain. would look a whole lot better with Q1 completed.

Þróndeimr August 30th, 2003, 04:38 PM Right now its not too good(6,5/10), but in the future ,with Q1 completed there in going to get 7,5-8/10.
MAXG September 2nd, 2003, 11:22 AM At the moment I would rate it at 7.5 ,but in a few years time probably 8.5
It seems that many people are being led to beleive that the Gold Coast is just some seasonal community, well most of the high rises are actually apartments, and behind the skyline is miles of homes. Many retirees live here but also many young families choose the Gold Coast to raise their families.
And yes it is also a very popular tourist destination, with 4 major theme parks like Sea World, Warner Bros Movie World and Dreamworld.
The skyline will change dramatically over the next 5-6 years with Q1, Circle on Cavill, and CULWULLA has mentioned there is another 230m-range building being planned, that is 3 buildings over 200m. Also like the rest of Oz, GC is going through a major boom and there's loads of high rises planned, U/C etc.
And in reply to Slugradio's comments -
And for a so called "tourist resort", these are just some stats from skyscrapers.com comparing GC to your city -
CALGARY - High rises
Completed - 182
U/C - 9
Approved - 5
Proposed - 5
GOLD COAST- High rises
Completed - 212
U/C - 24
Approved - 8
Proposed - 11
Well, it seems that this "tourist resort" is actually ahead of your city, by number of high rises.

Justme September 2nd, 2003, 11:42 AM I can never understand why some people knock beach resorts that highrise skyscrapers???
These are skyscrapers just like anywhere else. Sure, being apartments they look different, and I can understand people prefering commercial highrises as they are often more sleek, but still these places do have the same effect and are warrented for comparrison or discussion.
That said, I love the Gold Coast, as I do Benidorm in Spain and Miami Beach (as well as all the others in the world)
The Gold Coast is relatively new, which means it doesn't have the density of Benidorm by a long shot, but many of the scrapers are therefore more modern. It's higher than Miami Beach - although less dense, but I don't think the canals work (i.e. look) as well as the ones do in Miami.
Still, I put all three on the same level, and that's quite high.
I say 8/10 for Gold Coast. It's beautiful and an asset to Oz.
(Come to think of it, most of the people that don't like these beach resorts seem to come from cold climates - where such things could never exist even if they wanted them to)

well for starters the GOLD COAST has better surf and beaches...
and secondly i dont know how interesting miami is exactly.. but the Gold Coast plays host to Oceania's 4 best theme parks.
for a city of 470'000 this city is awsome.. in holiday season the population swells to somethine like 900'000/ 1million people. and most of them are on the coastal strip. a very dense part of the coast.

Great! I love scrapers by the sea :D
Brizbane2 December 28th, 2003, 06:47 AM While the skyine is interesting in that it is a linear strip crowded against a beach - the quality of the buildings is not great. When Q1 and other UC towers come online perhaps my opinion of the quality will improve
Macca-GC May 20th, 2004, 04:18 PM The Gold Coast is a great city. The reason most of the towers look boring is that most of them were built in the 80's by a stack of Japanese businessmen who lost fortunes.
They also built over 40 international Golf Courses, some designed by greats such as Greg Norman. The Ecological side of the city is also breath taking. Those mountains are all reminants of what was once the Southern Hemisphere's largest volcano. Now it is the Southern Hemisphere's largest volcanic crater. Big enough to fit Los Angeles 3 times!!!!!
There is also a World Heritage National Park in our hinterland and the annual whale migration makes for a great show.
The Gold Coast is a great place to live, work and play.
We currently make more movies than anywhere else in the Southern Hemisphere. Warner Brothers studios are here.
And as for tourist attractions, more have been planned then there ever has been here. We once had planned:
A Walt DisneyWorld Australia themepark
A 150 metre tall bronze statue of a lifesaver. Planned for an island that seperates the ocean access in the Boradwater (Our harbour).
A snow theme park that would have literally, covered a mountain in the Gold Coast hinterland with snow. We've never even seen snow fall on the Gold Coast.
4 other smaller themeparks.
A cruise ship terminal(Still being considered)
Two cableways up the hills behind the city.
The world's tallest building.
Plus several others that I can't think of because I'm too tired. But seriously, the Gold Coast is a great place. We do have some problems with traffic and water, but that's about it.

Flatiron July 30th, 2004, 12:50 AM Sorry, but it DOES look like a not very interesting copy of Miami. And Miami has a great Latin influence to much of its architecture that I don't see here (re: the Villa Vizcaya and Addison Mizner's 1920s buildings, etc.).
No South Beach Deco, either.

CULWULLA August 6th, 2004, 05:33 AM im pretty sure the entire skyline if you include Runaway bay to north and Coolangattea in south measures 31km!! that would be worlds longest??
the central area of Surfers paradise (where all the talls are) stretches 7km!
it really is a highrise wonderland. With 322m Q1 uc and many more in pipeline over 200m it will definatley be one of the finest skylines in the world! thats what this poll is about right? skylines?

Some sort of Australian Benidorm! Still, it looks impressive, even if it isn't a real city. And with the amazing Q1 tower going up it will look a LOT better a year from now! Which is why I scored it a 8,5... there has to be room for improvement!

Actually only a few of those towers are timeshares and hotels - the rest are owner occupier.
Surfers Paradise is the second most densly populated postal address in Australia after Elizabeth Bay in Sydney. Those towers are full of people who either work in GC or commute an hour to Brisbane CBD or its industrial areas.

Bronteboy September 5th, 2004, 08:43 AM and here's another view of the Gold Coast, where world's tallest residential tower (322m to spire, Melbourne's Eureka, 297.5m to roof) is under construction-but currently rated 175th in the skyline poll. Crazy! Great for viewing, and informative, but as a skyline polling exercise it has gone awry.
Check out the rating of other main Australian skyline cities, Sydney, Melb, Brisbane, Pertth - and what's well ahead of them:

Jeeeb September 5th, 2004, 08:56 AM 8.5 I like the gold coast alot, in the future the skyline will become much denser, esp. as it is become increasingly popular for tech. companies .etc. and the population is skyrocketing more and more people moving to the gold coast.
TheDon September 30th, 2004, 05:50 AM GC easy 9 and getting better every day.
Just back i Bris after 4 yrs London and last 9 months Sydney.
Benidorm is a junk pile compared to the Gold Coast, but I suppose if u r from Europe and havn't travelled you might have little or no understanding of what is possible with modern luxury highrise resort style accomodation.
The Gold Coast its natural setting, cleanliness and life style rate 2nd to very few in this world, thats why it is growing so fast.
Nearly all you see has been built since the early 70s.
Gold Coast and Sister City Brisbane with combined population over 2.3 million will boast 3 out of Australia's tallest 5 in 2007.
Currently Aus rates 4th after USA, China and Japan for talls, not bad for 20 million.

Dubai_Boy November 20th, 2005, 09:04 PM I have been to the gold coast , and i can honestly say i was not impressed with the city itself
i remeber arriving an hour and ten minutes later from the aiport in brisbane. It was around 7:30 pm and the city was DEAD. Very dark , not enough lighting , not a soul walking the streets
The mountains and woods i loved , how could i not :) i really enjoyed myself
The theme parks are overrated and there isnt much to do in the city center, actually there is a lot to do , but you can do it all in one night (around 6 hours or so) and that about it. So i would only recommend people stay for a week max and travel all over the country instead
malec November 20th, 2005, 09:12 PM The skyline's amazing though

@ BobDaBuilder - Your an idiot as always, can't you see that your own city of Melbourne is trying to emulate GC tackyness in so many ways. I mean take Crown Casino, GC all the way if you ask me, and what about Docklands – that’s just like GC, except without the people and the beach.
It seems Melbourne has just discovered "Tacky" while GC is rapidly changing and losing its cheap and tacky image for a more urban sophistication - especially at ground level.
As for the "Bubble Bursting" you put it there are more big projects going on in GC than in the entire state of Victoria!!!
Wezza January 16th, 2006, 01:26 PM The bubble burst long ago for Gold Coast. Does anyone still go there on holidays?
Too tacky for mine.
Typical........
So whats so tacky about the Gold Coast from your point of view?
Obviously people are still holidaying on the Gold Coast because pax numbers going through the airport there are increasing at a far greater % than even the mighty Melbourne can't match.

KJBrissy February 2nd, 2006, 05:41 PM It's interesting that Surfers Paradise on the GC is the suburb in Australia with the highest population density and growing quickly by the month. I think this is where we'll start to see the skyline have a peak with a dense core...can't wait!!!

sakor1 April 4th, 2006, 12:34 AM The city as a whole is the Gold Coast, Surfer's Paradise is a 'suburb' if you will (but probably the closest thing to a CBD that the Gold Coast has).

CULWULLA June 29th, 2006, 01:14 AM GC has come a long way over past 5 years. It has had 3 new tallest in as many years . The typical bland flats from 1970;s and 80;s are now being hidden by new distingushed colourful and vibrantly designed towers! Its amzing what Chevron towers and Q1 did for the city. New super towers are now being built/ planned and approved.

8.5/10 because of the badly aged 70's/80's built white boxes on the beach -

city_thing November 26th, 2006, 07:53 PM For anyone overseas that doesn't know, the Gold Coast is basically full of young drunk kids, alcohol, gambling, and overall tackiness. It's infamous in Australia for being a cheap place for a holiday. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone. The skyline is nice, but the city is crap.

For somebody who has never been to the Gold Coast, I don't think you can judge it. Every city has negative sides, and that's what you're picking at.
As somebody who has been to the Gold Coast for a holiday, I can say I really liked it. The city was really good, and multicultural too, it had Japanese signs as well as English signs. The people there are great, they have that admirable lifestyle. Also the variety of buildings is really good.

Get a life lad! The kids are also on drugs!
You really don't know what you're talking about and for the record most Australians dont see it as a cheap destination. Tell that to the many who choose to stay at the Versace Resort!
The young, drunk and rowdy young people is a function of the end of year school parties and it's become and institution.
LOL at gambling, you can gamble anywhere in Australia, even the local pub, casinos and gaming houses are not confined to the Gold Coast.
The beaches are beautiful and there is plenty to do for anyone and everyone. Many beaches, large themeparks, the waterways and natural gold coast hinterland are just a few highlights.

SM247 December 17th, 2006, 06:55 AM Yuk this place is PLASTIC! Ruined such a nice beach...
The only reason the beach is so nice is because of tourist oriented development. This time last century the Nerang River mouth was nowhere near The Spit, the water was brackish and swampy and beaches were prone to heavy constant erosion. Building towers = more impetus to keep the sand from buggering off due to the tide and weather a la 1967-style.
Maxim98 December 17th, 2006, 07:13 AM ...stuff...
Gosh, because that doesn't reek of pretentiousness....
There is a serious disregard for the respect of ideas in many forums here. It never ceases to amaze me.
With regards to the skyline, I can't help but comment on the fact that it is nothing more than a new Dubai, sans the choking sand - or even a denser version of Miami, with designer condos and concrete paradises constituting a new "destination" skyline. While it might look nice from a distance (that tall is actually a wonderful ornament on the skyline), I can't help but wonder about the actual culture these lavishly appointed hoteliminiums constitute.
Wezza December 19th, 2006, 09:55 AM ^^
Ummm, Gold Coast has had high rises a bit longer than Dubai has mate.
festiboi January 1st, 2007, 02:18 AM 7.5
The Q1 is beautiful! However, there's no centre point to focus your eyes on. Understandably for what it is, all the buildings follow the beachfront but on a rating for a skyline, it doesn't look very good. Kinda chaotic and just looks like a row of condos and apartments. The Q1 is the saving grace.
SRG January 5th, 2007, 12:20 PM I absolutely despise that superficial paradise appearance. Miami ... Las Vegas ... Gold Coast ... Dubai. All of these cities just look so superficial to me. I really am looking for urban substance. An easy alternative to Miami is Tampa ... for example.
Call me a Midwestern bumpkin, but that's just my opinion. I prefer grit and urban substance over superficial looks.

Actually, you are not wrong. Nor is it a bumpkin opinion. Each of the cities you have mentioned lack the essential depth, diversity and substance of true cities. Dubai is becoming a skyscraper Disneyland, and culturally, the Gold Coast is about as one dimensional and barren.

Migod, what's wrong with you ? You live in Melbourne, which really deserves to rank among the world's fine cities, and you pine for a wasteland like the Gold Coast ! The skyline's impressive for what it is - a retirement resort - but there's nothing there, son, except blocks of flats, gated communities, and a vast, long, rather pitiless beach.
Next, someone's going to start calling Dubai the greatest city on earth. :ohno:

Exactly, the Gold Coast is certainly not the New Dubai, if anything it's the other way around. Which came first the chicken or the egg, in this case the GC certainly had modern skyscrapers and canals first. It funny how people allude to them being similar ... i guess they are in many ways but people need to remember the modern resort city of Surfers Paradise was here first, not to be excluded would be other resort cities too, like Miami, Benidorm etc.
