View Full Version : What large Asian cities are the worst to drive in?
GYRO March 21st, 2005, 05:21 AM What large Asian cities or metros are the worst to drive in? Make your decisions based on the following hinderances (problems):
Unpredictable drivers
Aggressive pedestrians/kama kazi pedestrians
Animals
The high number of bicycles/scooters/motorcycles
Carts
Foot driven vehicles
High traffic volume (automobiles & trucks)
Fast drivers

ryanr March 21st, 2005, 08:29 AM No disrespect to Indonesians...but Jakarta would rank high in the list. The motorcyclists and bus drivers are horrible!! So much stress to drive in Jakarta's streets. And if you do hit a motorcycle or if a motorcycle hits you, you will always get the blame because for two reasons, the car is bigger than the motorcycle and a car owner has more money than a motorcycle owner:D
drwho March 21st, 2005, 09:08 AM have you guys seen the Words of wisdom on Indian Highways-thread? then you all should see it,Will put a smile on your face that for sure;) :)

Driving in South Asia,,you really do have to have a MIND for it. it is total chaos!
If you really want to push up the adrenaline to the top then do take a rickshaw (in my case in Gujarat) because that will be some hell of a ride in lifetime i will tell you that.;)
Drwho`s guide to the psychedelic chaos ride.:
1.take 5 cup of very strong coffee,
2. Fill your Ipod with Psy/Goa-trance or Jimi Hendrix (if you like guitars that is)
3. Call in the rickshaw from the street and GO!.
you will never be the same again:) ;)
Alvin March 21st, 2005, 09:09 AM yes, Jakarta is bad...but Shanghai is just as bad, if not worse. The drivers there are EVEN MORE aggressive than Jakarta's (especially those taxi drivers...I would describe some of them as possessing utter disregard for human (pedestrian) life). I can say that for a fact after living there for half a year...
During that period I've also *witnssed* two minor accidents in front of my dorm (usually involving motorcycle and a car), and heard countless other incidents..
ryanr March 21st, 2005, 09:13 AM  those signs in that indian highways thread are so funny!
damn, didnt know this poll was multiple choice. I could have picked more.
Saigoneseguy March 23rd, 2005, 12:02 PM Hanoi is the most terrible...but Saigon is even worse...ppl drive and stop as they want...there's no law,no respect...and the police are world most corruptive...
Solblanc March 23rd, 2005, 07:22 PM Manila is horrible... traffic jams due to animals, car accidents, and floods aside, the place is infested with loud, boorish, and selfish drivers that are completely without scruples. It doesn't help that I'm one of them :D
kiretoce March 23rd, 2005, 07:28 PM As of this posting, the standings are (according to the poll above :D):
1. Hanoi (Worst)
2. Kolkata
3. Delhi, Mumbai and Jakarta
4. Beijing
5. Karachi
heirloom March 31st, 2005, 04:01 PM how about seoul? i remember we were pretty amazed by our driver's bravado.
null March 31st, 2005, 04:18 PM traffic jams due to animals
what animals?
Alvin April 1st, 2005, 01:25 PM As of this posting, the standings are (according to the poll above :D):
1. Hanoi (Worst)
2. Kolkata
3. Delhi, Mumbai and Jakarta
4. Beijing
5. Karachi
I have to say this poll is rather flawed though considering that no one has ever driven in ALL those cities above. We can only judge from our own experiences (usually just in 1 or 2 cities) and compare it to what other people say about theirs....
SUNNI April 1st, 2005, 01:32 PM Seoul i must admit has some agressive taxi drivers
but from my experience, Hanoi and Beijing are far worse :)
Jo April 3rd, 2005, 11:35 PM With all respect to Vietnam I think Saigon is a horrible city to drive in. Also the main road between Saigon and Hanoi can be scary in some parts.
Pangu April 4th, 2005, 12:19 AM I wonder how many of you who voted have actually been to at least 1/3 of the cities listed above...
Jo April 4th, 2005, 01:30 AM Can only speak for myself but I've been to seven of them :dunno:
heirloom April 4th, 2005, 09:35 AM i realise i've been to 7 too, including where i live. or 8.
drove to kuala lumpur - stuck in massive jams in the city centre; took hours to look for a hotel.
hong kong - no impression just remember lots of hills and brownness.
seoul - very impatient and somewhat scary driver, but good.
tokyo - no bad memories of road transport, but subway was packed.
bangkok - stuck stuck stuck stuck stuck stuck stuck in traffic - that was before the subway and lrt was complete.
jakarta - too young to remember much, but some taxis did not have air conditioning. or they didnt bother to turn it on (irrelevant :p)
singapore - takes half an hour to travel half the island during morning peak hour jams. orchard road jams are horrendous some nights.
beijing - did i go there?
Pangu April 4th, 2005, 10:13 AM So that's 2 out of 25 votes... assuming no one is lying...
drwho April 4th, 2005, 12:24 PM well i have been to the cities i have voted for.
the rest is in doubt though
Johan April 10th, 2005, 09:18 AM I think that Guangzhous traffic is pretty bad, alot worse then both Hongkongs and Beijings which are the only two other cities on the list that i have been on, so i would vote for Guangzhou but it isnt on the list so... i am not gonna vote
ncon April 10th, 2005, 09:22 AM if talk about this , JAKARTA SURE TO BE IN THE LIST
SUNNI April 10th, 2005, 01:21 PM seoul - very impatient and somewhat scary driver, but good.

aaa...but you haven't sat in a KL taxi which doubles as an F-1 racing car during the nite. Yep, drivers sit with shades on, lean way back beyong the A-pillar and drive with one hand ramrod straight on the steering wheel while overtaking at 120km/h. It's quite an experience.

tata October 31st, 2005, 12:08 PM So far, from all cities mentioned on the list, I've driven in 4 cities, and the rank from most to least comfortable is: Singapore, Bangkok, Jakarta and Delhi. But again it's based on my experience.

ill make sure i put that in the 'Must do' list if i goto KL :D
Christerdom November 1st, 2005, 03:17 PM i been in mumbai, and i was always on the edge of my seat when riding a taxi cab :)
no side mirror and many pedestrians too brave to be hit by a car and sometimes, driver go up against the trafic flow w/c is scary... but drivers there rocks!!
Jo November 6th, 2005, 06:35 PM drivers sit with shades on, lean way back beyong the A-pillar and drive with one hand ramrod straight on the steering wheel while overtaking at 120km/h.
Can picture that guy with the shades. Would laugh my a$$ off in the backseat! :D
sista November 7th, 2005, 03:31 PM I've only been to KL, Shanghai, Manila...if I compare the 3, I would take Shanghai as the worst city to drive in. It's also hard to walk there because I might be killed...not by cars...but by bikes... lol
Louman November 21st, 2005, 12:09 AM In many parts of Manila, traffic lanes are only a suggestion. Six vehicles in a 4 lane street. Woo hoo! Is this common in other Asian cities too?
sanhen November 22nd, 2005, 05:13 AM Let me illustrate this:
Laneways is only for decoration. Sidewalk etc is considered as part of the road, you can drive on it. Cars moving from 5th lane to 1st lane and to 4th lane every second. Bus, motorcycle, bycicle, people selling snacks all mixed together in the road. Surprisingly there's little accident. The expressway is packed with traffic jams. Peole getting off and in to public transport in the middle of the road. A 10 minutes trip become 3 hours. Your air con is failing from the heat. Suddenly there's a VVIP coming from the other way and squeeze all vehicle to both side of the road. There's a hole in the middle of the street filled with water and fish. Car horn sounds every second, you so used to it so you never hear it anymore.
Welcome to Jakarta.

kronik November 27th, 2005, 09:26 AM what animals?
Maybe not Manila, but its definitely true in India. Since the cow is sacred for the Hindus, they aren't "put away" for various agricultural and commercial purposes, but rather set free to roam on the streets. This is true is all the cities except maybe the main commercial streets of the big metros like Mumbai and Delhi.
This creates jams, accident hazards, and of course, the poor cow is in no way happier living in the filth and pollution.
but these Jakarta pictures are really something! :runaway:
Zorobabel November 27th, 2005, 09:30 AM From my experiences, nothing even compares to Jakarta. There have literally been times when I would make a 1-hour trip and it would almost be as fast to walk.

Except when it needs to be creamed for leather exports...I believe it is riduclous to say cows in india are not harmed...millions of cows end up as leather products...my wallet, jacket and my leather hat are from amde in india cow leather...it is just bad administration and inability of the government to filed a force to convicne the people to put away the cows

RonnieR July 28th, 2008, 03:34 AM ^^ I think the picture on Manila traffic was taken in February 2006. Fast forward 2008, the traffic flow along that major road called EDSA has improved, partly due to high oil prices, more people are riding MRT/LRT and buses which are less efficient or old ones are off the street, the local traffic enforcement agency (MMDA) has also implemented improvements. The center of the road is MRT Line 3 (blue line).

Sorry, I want to know if the Manila MRT is similar to Singapore MRT (Subway) or it's just Commuter Train like in Jakarta?
RonnieR July 28th, 2008, 04:11 PM Sorry, I want to know if the Manila MRT is similar to Singapore MRT (Subway) or it's just Commuter Train like in Jakarta?
Hi, thank you for your interest about MRT/LRT in Metro Manila. The MRT/LRT lines here are more extensive compared to Jakarta.
We have the blue line with 13 stations, 17 kms. with 700,000 passengers per day. The yellow line has 18 stations, 15 kms with 400,000 passengers per day and purple line has 11 stations, 14 kms., 300,000 passengers per day.
As of the present, out of 42 stations, only 3 are underground (bawah tanah), and the rest are elevated or ground level. Construction is on-going for the “loop” that would connect LRT 1 and MRT3 with additional 4 stations. MRT 7’s construction will start end of this year, target of completion is 2012. MRT 7 is estimated to have 600,000 passengers per day with 14 stations with 3 underground stations. There is also LRT 6 extension, with 10 stations traversing 11 kilometers.
Actually, I’m confused with the difference between MRT and LRT but they are rapid transit, AC and very helpful in these times where the gas price in Metro Manila costs P63/liter or USD1.43 = Rp13,100 per liter.

Hi Ronnie, thanx for your information :).. Yeah, according to your explanation, I think transportation system (esp. railways) in Manila is better than Jakarta (dunno exactly, I've never been there to Manila).
Jakarta currently has Commuter (Jabodetabek) and City Train, 10 BRT (Busway) corridors and is evaluating the feasibility study to build an MRT (Subway) line which estimated to be ready for public use in 2014 (what a long time from now.... :)).. Two LRT (Monorail) lines are also planned to be built, but never been realized until now..:ohno: I hope the MRT project will be a successful project, not like the monorail...
Oh ya, how do you know some indonesian words? Are you able to speak in Bahasa Indonesia?

I hope that your monorail and MRT project would push thru. I saw the monorail posts near Senayan, used to stay in Jakarta/Singapore, jadi bisa bicara Bahasa Indonesia and Singlish :) I love Jakarta...yeah, your busway is cool....

actually, vehicles here are not stuck, they are actually running just slow. EDSA the name of that avenue don't have an intersection (if there is, flyovers and U-turn slots are present, so meaning no use for traffic lights since its a continuous flow) and as you can notice, buses are in a row, you cannot find them in the middle or in left side of the avenue, though still traffic because of the volume that runs in inconsistent size of the road.
manila_eye September 15th, 2008, 11:33 PM ^ yes, it is not stuck but moves as if you are just walking. there are lots of intersection along EDSA... the edsa-taft, makati intersection, shaw intersection, aurora blvd intersection, et al.
erikko September 16th, 2008, 04:47 AM EDSA in the Philippines is the worst, it took me almost one hour trapped in traffic. jeez...

brightside. September 19th, 2008, 03:32 PM Karachi is a nightmare to drive in. Especially the Saddar and Korangi areas. Even posh areas like Defence are terrible, cause there is no parking and there's speed breakers every few hundred yards. Bikes whizz in and out of nowhere.
I once almost killed 2 jaywalkers when I was 17; I was changing the radio station and looked up to see two dudes smack in the center of my path. I swerved and narrowly missed them. The idiots were crossing a road at 3 am without looking.
India101 December 24th, 2008, 02:37 AM ha! Mumbai 1st and it should be. So many cars, cows, people, dogs,
adgaps February 10th, 2009, 09:31 AM traffic in Manila can be very much annoying during rush hour, around 8 AM - 11 AM i think... but during nighttime, when there aren't much cars on the roads, even public buses run like F-1 racing cars... what's worse is that there are no speed limits, though some say there is, but no one knows what exactly that speed limit is...
btw, i heard that traffic in Bangkok is terrible... is that true?
tollfreak February 21st, 2009, 08:15 AM ^^ it is true..last time on my trip there last month.. I was stuck in the Pratunam Intersection for 30 mins alone ( a distance of less than 250 m). I think the causes of most traffic jams in SE Asian cities are poor traffic management..like a red light being too long (happens in a lot of Intersections here in Jakarta). Anybody who has driven or being in a Jakarta rush hour knows that traffic on the main thruway, Sudirman Road is actually not as bad in Rush Hours as in other cities..due to a 3 in 1 system established (similar to HOV 3+ in the US), but it's the roads that lead you to the further southern parts of the city that gives you headaches..but A 12 km commute by car from Central Jakarta to Pondok Indah in South jakarta can be achieved in less than an hour..which is not bad
Bejoworld February 26th, 2009, 06:55 AM ha! Mumbai 1st and it should be. So many cars, cows, people, dogs,
cows and dogs
Zorobabel March 27th, 2009, 01:05 PM I'm not going to vote because I've never been to most of these cities, but here in Jakarta it gets pretty bad. On Friday nights (tonight, actually) on Sudirman Street it can take 30 minutes to go about half a kilometer (that's my guess on the distance from the roundabout at Senayan to Gatot Subroto Street). One intersection I must go through each morning--Jl. Raya Pasar Minggu and Kalibata Street--generally takes about 20-30 minutes, and that's not during rush hour but at noon. Mampang Street has the worst traffic I've ever seen anywhere. I got stuck in the traffic once and it took me an hour and a half to go about 1 kilometer. Terrible...
icracked March 28th, 2009, 07:27 AM From what I seen and read in recent travel books, Jakarta. I do hope Jakarta won't ever be mentioned in a "Worst Traffic" topic in the future because its an embarrassment to all Indonesians.
RonnieR March 29th, 2009, 05:08 PM ^^ it is true..last time on my trip there last month.. I was stuck in the Pratunam Intersection for 30 mins alone ( a distance of less than 250 m). The 3 in 1 is actually good but if you let these "jockeys' ride in the cars for a fee just to have at least 3 passengers in a vehicle, it defeats the purpose.
tollfreak March 30th, 2009, 12:29 PM From Viva news, Rush hour traffic at Pancoran,MT Haryono Road..This is heading east bound towards Cawang(usually a bit lighter than this though-the rain has a brutal impact on the traffic in Jakarta due to motorcycles waiting for the rain to stop in Underpasses)

Venantio March 30th, 2009, 06:10 PM And I thought traffic was bad in Toronto......;););)
But traffic here (in Toronto) is much better than in Southeast Asia, especially in Jakarta.:)
Kopassus April 3rd, 2009, 04:24 AM ^^ it is true..last time on my trip there last month..
I think its also often caused by dumb brainless idiots, like drivers from public transportation (tukang angkot, supir bis) and traditional markets, occupying 40% of the road.
RonnieR April 4th, 2009, 11:16 AM Manila traffic - rush hour in the morning (I took this at 9 AM), although not so many motorcycles in the streets compared to other cities in the region, traffic jam is a problem.

sutee May 18th, 2009, 07:02 PM Rainbow Jam the most beautiful traffic in the world
Thanks to its large, multi-hued fleet of taxis , not to mention the Thai tradition of exuberantly decorating one’s vehicle, Bangkok must have the most colourful traffic in the world. That’s a good thing, too, because the traffic is jammed so often it would be awfully monotonous without such visual stimulus. amazing thailand

RonnieR May 27th, 2009, 09:24 AM Traffic in Jakarta is at it's worst when it rains bc of motorcycles shading under overpasses ranging from small pedestrian crossings to road ones, I wonder if it is the same in other Asian countries?
In Manila, we don't experience this due to few motorcycles in the street. Yes, I experienced this in Jakarta, the motorcycle drivers stopped for shelter under flyovers/overpasses/bridges to avoid getting wet - thus blocking the road
...but we experience our undisciplined jeepney drivers who load and unload the passengers wherever they want that hampers the flow of the traffic. :bash:
Anyway, I experienced heavy traffic last Saturday in southern part of M. Manila
before approaching the Skyway construction.

WOW!!! I agree that traffic in Dhaka is VERY BAD indeed (as u can see from the pics), I guess only 10% of Dhaka's roads/highways are traffic-free and I thought it was an unique city in terms of traffic lol, but now I see there are more 'shocking' trafic scenes in Asia!!! I have no idea how ppl lives through this???
btw, Dhaka's traffic would look alot cleaner if there was no rickshaws and less ppl in the streets, the govt is gonna ban all the rickshaws from Dhaka's roads now!
But if traffic continues like this, i can imagine whats gonna happen by 2020 :P

RonnieR August 12th, 2009, 04:10 AM ^^ Hi, no, it's a bus lane near the MRT station. Buses queue/wait for the green light at the nearby stop light intersection. This road, EDSA, has so many buses, the local agency plans to reduce the number of buses by more than 50%. Most Metro Manilans prefer to ride the MRT/LRT than the buses.
RonnieR August 14th, 2009, 05:51 AM This part of Manila has so many jeepneys, in Aurora Boulevard. On top is Araneta LRT station.
The local agency is no longer accepting new franchises for jeepneys. I hope they will be phased out gradually.

:) :) :) i've tried driving in SG before...it was so smooth.....everything was in order.
I think the traffic jam happens only in Orchard Road but still a sight to behold.
This major road in Manila is still stuck with traffic jam despite the presence of MRT (middle). Just showing the real score....motorcycles are few, how much more if we have so many of them in the road? :ohno:

Erm, ever try driving on CTE and PIE? Especially during evening rush. Singapore is a potential traffic jam material - it's the extensive network of ERP gantry system($$) that deters big congestion, not the streets and highways.

umm there are some places in Dhaka (residential areas/ residential, diplomatic cum commercial areas) where you can drive without much fuss. But if you really wanna drive fast and smooth in Dhaka, then make sure u r there during Eid, weekend (esp friday morning) or any national holidays :), hardly any traffic, so we could drive upto 120 km/h lol. otherwise, after 10/11 PM at night, u can drive upto 200 km/h in the highway lol, but then security is an issue at night.

There is some truth in there but it's not only that. Car ownership rate in SG is much lower than in, say, Western Europe, not to mention USA. Actually it is all combined: excellent and sufficient road system, low car ownership rate and road pricing system. These factors make Singapore perhaps the least congested city in the world ;)
farhadowen August 18th, 2009, 06:01 AM jakarta - too young to remember much, but some taxis did not have air conditioning. or they didnt bother to turn it on (irrelevant :p)
When U come to Jakarta? 1980? All taxis in Jakarta have Aircond and some of them have GPS too, most of them are Toyota Vios, the other is Proton Wira, Proton Waja, Hyundai Excel II, Mercedes C 240, Mercedes E 200, Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Crown, Toyota Alphard, Mercedes Vito, and several number of Nissan Cedric or Ford Laser (Only about 20 cars). Some taxis also have Mobile TV. U dont believe it? Come to Jakarta and prove it :-)

I'm curious on "low car ownership" in Singapore. I know that it is mainly due to government's control by imposing taxes and prohibitive cost of cars compared to other countries. Do you know how many cars in SG? (public and private vehicles).

This is actually true for the CTE. Ask most cab drivers there to get you out of the city to the airport during rush hour (or vice versa during AM Rush) and they will most likely take the ECP instead of the CTE (Happened to me a few times)

Not sure about exact data (should be in some SG statistical website) but according to Wikipedia it is about 120 vehicles per 1000 people. That would compare to about 400-500 in EU and perhaps around 800 in USA. And yeah, it seems that is due to high taxes which are intended to keep potential drivers away from cars so causing traffic jams. Singapore is one of very few (if not the only) cities in the world where public transport has been made so effective that a private car is virtually not needed anyway. In addition taxis are so affordable that it can be used as an alternative of a very good value.

Thanks for the info. I wish PHilippine transport leaders would limit the no. of vehicles, buses, jeepneys in the streets. Here, there are no restrictions as long as Filipinos can afford to buy cars, thus putting pressure on road network.
Our MRT/LRT lines are not enough to accomodate the 10 Million people in Metro Manila. The 3 lines have around an average of 1.5 M passengers daily and expected to increase to 2 Million passengers once the new line (loop for Yellow line) opens in May 2010.
The million cars/vehicles in the streets plus the buses and jeepneys - really tough.

I'm afraid, no other city in the world has achieved what Singapore has when it comes to the effectiveness of transportation as a whole. Perhaps some Japanese and German cities could be good examples too but even there probably are some flaws and inefficiencies.
One thing is clear though, car ownership should not go beyond 400-500 vehicles and public transport should be fast and comfortable enough to create a positive environment for striking a balance of transport effectiveness and good driving conditions. It's a tremendously difficult task to achieve and there are way more bad examples than there are good ones with Singapore, in my opinion, being the top example of how a good system works.
7freedom7 August 21st, 2009, 10:24 AM ^^ Hi, no, it's a bus lane near the MRT station. Buses queue/wait for the green light at the nearby stop light intersection. This road, EDSA, has so many buses, the local agency plans to reduce the number of buses by more than 50%. Most Metro Manilans prefer to ride the MRT/LRT than the buses.
heh, I see the reason. But Beijing is even worse!

In Jakarta, a 15 Km commute by car from the center of town to the southern suburbs takes around an hour. This will be likely less in asian first world countries but how about in similar car centric cities like Bangkok, KL or Manila?

Distance from C5 Ortigas to Makati is around 15 kms. During rush hour, my travel time by car ranges from 30 minutes to 45 minutes.
superchan7 August 25th, 2009, 09:21 PM Singapore definitely has a great transport network. I would like to visit again someday. However, I'm sure quite a few other cities have good transport networks, making car ownership unnecessary.

icracked September 2nd, 2009, 02:17 AM This poll is rigged, Manila and Jakarta do have some bad traffic but their traffic cannot be compared to cities to Bangladeshian, Indian or Vietnamese cities where there are flocks of bikes, mopeds and other vehicles jammed together in a almost never ending gridlock. Even Chinese traffic such as the Beijing photos shown above (sucks for me since I'll be studying in Beijing Normal University for half a year and may have to deal with that) is comparable or even worst than Jakarta/Manila.

patchay September 26th, 2009, 06:04 PM Besides Singapore, I think KL's traffic system is better than other densely populated cities within ASEAN. (but it is deteriorating day by day due to increasing cars on the road and "unbelievable" public transport)
- One factor is I believe KL has a much smaller city population than other cities. I think still less than 2million.
- The suburbs are also becoming city on their own thus businesses are relocating there and out of KL. A good example is the government and related agencies relocated to Putrajaya. (Putrajaya is quite dead at night though) The Big 4 accounting firms are also not in the CBD, 3 of which are in the suburbs.
Having said that, Malaysia has the largest passenger car market in ASEAN, though it has lost to Thailand in the overall vehicle market just recently! Yeap Malaysia sells close to half a million cars annually, most of which dominated by national cars called Proton, Perodua and Naza. Proton's subsidiary Lotus of UK will make a return to F1 next year :)
Around Asia, I think cities like Dhaka, Mumbai, Beijing are some of the worst......
wino September 26th, 2009, 08:29 PM Malaysia has the best road infrastracture that beats the rest of the region.
Lastresorter September 28th, 2009, 05:36 AM Malaysian cities have no choice when it comes to traffic jam because govt. needs to sustain domestic passenger car market - when cars are cheap, everyone wants to get a driving license and own a car. 2-3 cars in one household is a common sight in Malaysia. To offset the negative side of poor public transport system, Malaysia has extensive and impressive road and highway networks that is the envy of many countries.
I don't think KL's traffic is the worst in Malaysia -- try Penang! - narrow streets, island roads, lack of signages, and at the moment only one bridge connecting the island and the mainland.
KelvinKoh September 28th, 2009, 06:51 AM not to mention when it comes to the muslim holy month of Ramadhan...the traffic condition in KL will be the scariest ever seen!

patchay September 28th, 2009, 04:17 PM MALAYSIA
from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysian_expressway_system
The expressway network of Malaysia is considered the best expressway network in Southeast Asia and also in Asia after Japan and China. The total length is 1,499.5 kilometres (931.7 miles), and another 219.3 kilometres (136.3 miles) is still under construction. The closed toll expressway system is similar to the Japanese Expressway System and Chinese Expressway System. All Malaysian toll expressways are managed in the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) system.
Malaysian expressways exist in both West Malaysia and East Malaysia, however, the former are better-connected. The North-South Expressway passes through all the major cities and conurbations in West Malaysia, such as Penang, Ipoh, the Klang Valley and Johor Bahru. The Pan Borneo Highway connects the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak with Brunei.
A few major expressways in Malaysia are part of the larger Asian Highway Network. The Asian Highway Network is an international project between Asian nations to develop their highway systems, which will form main routes in the network. There are two Asian Highway routes passing through Malaysia - Asian Highway Route 2 AH 2 and Asian Highway Route 18 AH 18. The Malaysian section of Route AH 2 consists of the North-South Expressway, the Jalan Duta-Segambut Highway, Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 1, the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway, the Skudai Highway and the Johor-Singapore Causeway.

Double-deck motorway within stormwater by-pass tunnel
The main objective of this tunnel is to solve the problem of flash floods in Kuala Lumpur and also to reduce traffic jams along Jalan Sungai Besi and Lok Yew flyover at Pudu during rush hour. There are two components of this tunnel, the stormwater tunnel and motorway tunnel. It is the longest multi-purpose tunnel in the world.
The SMART Tunnel was featured in an episode of Extreme Engineering on the Discovery Channel; Truly Malaysia on the National Geographic Channel; Man Made Marvels on the Science Channel; and Megastructures on the National Geographic Channel.

hec2r-hec2r-activa8 October 29th, 2009, 07:00 PM I envy the Malaysian highways.
Philippine highways supposedly like that
but bec there are too many crooks
prolifirating the government. I call our highways
"disposable highways".
wino October 29th, 2009, 10:06 PM ^^ well it's improving a bit because of BOT programs. (Build operate and then transfer)
thanks to the private sector which is more competent than the government.
anyway.. it's really hard for Metro Manila to build highway infrastracture.. coz the city is already saturated.. and most land are privately owned.
kenken94 October 30th, 2009, 02:51 AM ^ Highways are not the problem of Manila........ drainage is their problem especially that informal settlers live on the waterways. Manila will take a toll in rising form the flood......... traffic will also worsen.

In reality, there's hectic traffic jams daily Mon to Fri on those highways I posted.
However, as you can see from those photos I posted, it seems like there's not much cars, so you ended up seeing the highways only. For now, I really can't find traffic jam pics for KL.
pulsephaze22 November 1st, 2009, 12:23 PM ^^ hmmm, there are hectic traffic jams in those highways during weekdays but then you can't manage to see a pic of that gridlock,. that's ironic. Im not being rude or anything but, I really dont think that that post is appropriate in this thread. But your high-ways are really cool dude,/ nice infras:)

Malaysia is a good model to road infrastracture for ASEAN
heavyrain2408 November 1st, 2009, 10:11 PM Yeah...if the Petronas tower is not there, I'll think that it is some place in the US. I truly don't see any problem with the traffic. Everything runs smoothly. That's great!
So I think the posts by patchay are not relevant to the thread. It's better for another thread of models or good examples of traffic/roads in Asia :)

Yeah patchay I've no idea why u showed random pics of our empty highways, just to show off our infra? we should paste pics of those notoriously jammed up highways during rush hour, there are loads of them....
heavyrain2408 November 3rd, 2009, 08:32 AM Wow , too many lady that riding the motorcycle in Hanoi . In Malaysia , mojority of them that riding motorcycle are man . How about other ASEAN cities ?:)
Since cars are too expensive in Vietnam, most of us have to use motorbike (more precise: mopeds or scooters) for daily life. A Ducati or a Yamaha R1 is also too expensive to afford.
i think they are just scooters. pretty easy to handle.
but i wonder what they use during the rainy season.. i know Vietnam has the same weather with the Philippines..
IT RAINS A LOT!! IT RAINS FREAKIN soooo MUCH!!!
Yeah.. mopeds and scooters are very easy to handle but you surely need some skills when doing that in Hanoi. It's pretty tricky.
And yes, we have a lot of rain in Vietnam. Sometime the heavy rain can make Hanoi streets flooded. It's a shame. When streets are wet, it's very dangerous riding bikes but we have no choice as I stated above: cars are too expensive for us. Given that our GDP/capita is $1000/year and a normal Toyota Camry costs about $ 60,000 in Vietnam, an average Vietnamese will need to save $ for more than100 years to buy a Camry.

chengo November 4th, 2009, 06:09 AM KL traffic jam maybe less. I think thats because KL population is less compare to other countries
If KL's population is more than 10 million+ like other big cities. I think traffic jam would be a big problem.
My last vacation, I went to tokyo and saw that they also have traffic jam problem too. and I dont think that KL's infrastucture are more advance than tokyo.
ps. if you want to find KL traffic jam pics. google can help.

Thanxx... yeah the population is small but to have 29 designated highways around kl to serve a small population is quite amazing for a developing nation.
according to wikipedia, malaysia's road infrastructure is behind only japan and china and maybe south korea. but it's public transport especially taxis is one of the worst in East Asia (as mentioned before by a travellers' guide)....

Manila's traffic is not the worst in Asia although this Christmas season, there is an increased in traffic. According to MMDA (local agency that oversees it), it increased by 40% since more people are out in the streets, malls and other places of interest due to holiday. Christmas is a big event in this country (92% Christians/Catholics). :)
MRT/LRT/PNR commuter trains help a bit.

But probably the worst in Southeast Asia. I wouldn't be happy with that.
Jarvijarv December 10th, 2009, 10:06 PM ^^
With due respect, after seeing this photo, I would have to give the worst to Jakarta. Metro Manila doesn't even have this many multi-lane:
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u80/Trip2Java/Jakarta/jakartatraffic-1.jpg
Ronnie, I usually travel to Manila during the Christmas season (Dec/Jan) and found the traffic to be extremely light (especially along EDSA.) I was told it's because many Manilenos go to the provinces. I don't know, but we made a trip from Valenzuela to Canlubang in just over 1 hour and half using EDSA and South Superhighway.....very surprised!!
jono December 10th, 2009, 10:39 PM In Manila, the governement cares a minimum about traffic and transportation, they have MRT and some normal transportations, they invest in infrastructure, and people can walk on the sidewalk.
In Jakarta there is NOTHING! public transportation / service is medieval (Puterbalik, busway, bus without bus stop) or doesn't exist at all.
I've been to Manila, believe me the traffic there is not the worst in southeast asia

Jarvijarv: What I meant was the traffic in December is heavier compared to other months esp. those roads leading to CBD/commercial centers. Have you tried going to Tutuban/Divisoria area few weeks prior to Christmas?
On Dec. 24, 25, yes, roads are clear.

Thanks. You're right, our government is investing in MRT/LRT and currently completing the LRT North Extension and next year, two lines - the LRT South and MRT 7 will begin its construction. Right now, MRT/LRT/PNR serve a total of 80 kms. in metropolis however, this is still not enough to address the transport woes. There is a plan to put up BRT starting with 3 corridors for 50 kms.
If Manila can invest in MRT/LRT, there is no reason that Jakarta cannot do it given that the difference in our GDP per capita is not that much. For total GDP, Indonesia is the biggest economy in ASEAN. :)

Good point, no I haven't been to the Tutuban area in years, so I would imagine there would be alot of traffic there. It was so weird to see very little cars on EDSA during that time. One of my favorite views is coming down EDSA at night and passing the Ortigas business district, the lit skyscrapers are amazing!
IMO, Metro Manila has improved dramatically with new LRT/MRT completed or under construction, more skyways and fly overs, the Pasig ferry sevice, the 'green' jeepneys, the PNR on its way. The government is going all out to make Metro Manila more competitive for business and more convenient for its people! Kudos! :cheers1:
