View Full Version : Lexington Kentucky
krosejr March 24th, 2005, 03:48 AM Okay, I'll start a thread on Lexington to post pics (lots of them :) ) etc...
ALSO let me apologize in advance!! I have a lot of pics and info. I take a lot of pride in where I live so I hope I don't bore you. :) I love being a vistor in my own town and if you have any questions ask, if I don't know -- I'll find out.
Some pics are repeats that have been posted in polls, etc...some are mine own photos and others are from web.
Lexington is the second largest city in Kentucky, and continues to grow steadily.. The city pop. is 260,512 (Census 2000), with the metro over 500,000. Some place these number at closer to 300,000/600,000. Lexington is centrally located in the Commonwealth, 74 miles east of Louisville and 81 miles south of Cincinnati, Ohio. Within this “Golden Triangle” lies the majority of Kentucky’s total personal income and total population. Part of Lexington’s unmatched charm is the close proximity of the area’s rural surroundings to the metropolitan conveniences of a dynamic city.

Raleigh-NC March 24th, 2005, 06:42 PM I have never been to Lexington, but from the photos I've seen it appears like one of those underrated places. Thanks for posting these pics here :okay: I am certainly looking forward to seeing more of Lexington in the future ;)
krosejr March 25th, 2005, 12:41 AM ^^^Thanks! I'll keep posting..I can't wait until spring so I can take some new photos.
Keeneland Spring meet starts April 8th...you should come up for the races...nothing like spring in the Bluegrass and horse races!
Lexy March 25th, 2005, 04:58 AM Thanks for the thread! I lived in lexington for about three years and loved every minute of it. Matter of fact, I created a website about it called lexingtonskyscrapers.com. It no longer works, but I took all the pics on there myself. I moved to Nashville and had to let the site and domain name go after the inability to keep it properly updated. Nevertheless, it was definatly a learning experience. Great pics again, and a couple of those I took LOL!!! Good to see that they are making their way around the net. :)

krosejr April 6th, 2005, 05:30 PM Do you enjoy a good P&J sandwich? If you love JIF all JIF peanut butter is made at the Lexington plant...head down Winchester Road on any given weekday afternoon and take in the sweet smell of peanutbutter!! :)
Fazoli's, www.fazolis.com/company_information/ started in Lexington and its headquarters are here.
Long John Silver's headquarters were in Lexington until 2002 when bought out by YUM! Brands, Inc. They are now in Louisville.
If you wish to keep a hard copy of this thread then print it on your LexMark Printer.... Lexmark International was founded here in Lexington and headquarter is here (the old IBM campus).
Have you bought that $2.45 per gal gas lately or got an oil change? If so was it a product of Ashland Inc./Valvoline. Their world headquarters is in Lexington.
The Council of State Governments, the National Tour Association and the Association of Retail Travel Agents are national organizations that are headquartered in Lexington. Also, The National Horse Center at the Kentucky Horse Park is the national headquarters to 14 equine associations.
Just a some cool info to share with ya. :)

SChristopher May 11th, 2005, 10:03 PM Lexington is alot larger than you would expect it to be ... those are pretty cool shots. I like to go on the terraserver and look at the satellite pictures, they are from 2002 though and you can already see they are outdated. Do you think the Lexington MSA could rise to 700k by next census?

I agree with you about it being larger than one might think. As for the MSA, I think it will be very close to it. In fact the " official MSA" is what is listed but Lexington's MSA lost: Madison County (Richmond, KY) because it became a micro this past year. Richmond/Madison Co. is 101,966 and is 30 mins south and is home to EKU. But if you take them into account...the MSA will surely be there or close.
astro May 12th, 2005, 02:46 AM Cool shots from the plane. Like this one the best.

sleepy May 12th, 2005, 05:06 AM I remember driving from Louisville to Lexington a few years ago.
It seemed like about 15 miles from Lexington, you came upon a hill with a great view, and saw all these animals running around--sorta looked like the African bush. You then realized all these animals were thoroughbred race horses!
SChristopher May 12th, 2005, 05:10 AM KroseJr : Do you have pictures of Lexington around Lexington Green, from the satellite photos it looks like there are midrises over there are there? Arent there also some midrises fronting New Circle? I know its probably not the preferred thing to see on here but like it :)

Funny that you brought that up...there are some. one of my favorite twins are at Lex green. The ALLTEL office complex. There are also other midrise office parks around the city (inside and outside the loop). :) When I get back from LV/LA/San Diego week after next, I'll take the pics and post! :)
I also live down from Lexington Green and Fayette Mall (second largest mall in KY soon to be the largest again after the expansion is finished, it lost the title when St. Matts in Louisville expanded.)

Yeah horses are everywhere here..there are over 500 horse farms in the Lexington area!!!
SChristopher May 12th, 2005, 06:11 AM Fayette Mall is going to be rediculously huge after the expansion...I really like their lineup, I cant imagine what else they could be adding. For its size Lexington seems to bag some good upscale stuff. And YES please take those pictures that would be great :) I love suburban office development O:-) and Lex looks to have a pretty cool stock, Lexington Green is a pretty cool development because there are the twins and then a hilton and I thought something else was back there too.... Where is Lexmarks offices? It would be great if they had a shiny new tower ... but I can imagine they are probably in a 2-3 story sprawler way out....

There is also the movie theater back there. As for Lexmark well, their offices and plant is the old IBM campus, which is off North New Circle Rd. It is a big campus. I just found out that IBM used to employ over 7000 people when the Lexington campus opened. Lexmark employs around 12000 but not all work in Lexington from what I am told.
At Fayette Mall they are adding a 2 story Dick's sporting (there is a Dick's out at Hamburg Place) and 7 stores. They are going to also put a 16 screen movie theater next to the mall. I don't understand this because there are 2 movie theaters close to the mall (across the road). Lexington has too many movie theaters as it is!!
JTS LOU May 13th, 2005, 12:11 AM What will Fayette Mall's Sq. Footage be?
It would be really cool to Link Louisville's two "Upscale" Center St. Matthews and Oxmoor Center. Either by Tram which would run across the highway or they could do something cool and make a underground walkway with shoppes.. HA i guess thats in my dreams!! LOL

CBL & Associates Properties has started a 140,000-square-foot expansion to the 1.1 million-square-foot Fayette Mall in Lexington, Ky. The expansion will include an 80,000-square-foot Dick's Sporting Goods and seven new stores. Dick's is scheduled to open by October 2005. CBL & Associates is also remodeling the existing center.

doormanpoet May 23rd, 2005, 04:29 AM A very nice looking city. I'll have to go there the next time UT plays KY in football. Not to far of a drive from Nashville.
krosejr May 25th, 2005, 07:40 PM The Castle...is just across the Lexington/Fayette Co. line down from the Lexington Bluegrass Airport. The castle was built for a man's wife and the marriage did not work out. He never finished it (the inside) and it was never lived in. Last year it was sold when the old man died. A lawyer in FL who is from Lexington bought and began working on it. The inside home caught on fire....he is now rebuilding and will open it next year as a tourist home. NO ONE had ever seen the inside except family members!!

Country roadsways...notice the brick walls, most of the byways are alined with them..some date back to before civil war and built by slaves.

Yeah the pics are cool...I hope to get out to take more. Thou I would have to disagree about the vibe after living here since 2001. I think the "feel of the city" is different and has something for everyone.
eightiesfan May 26th, 2005, 02:47 PM I guess it depends on what you are looking for. It's always seemed like a place with good potential, but never really gets over the hump. It seems to be growing at a pretty impressive pace, but it's all more of the same. Cloned communities and chain restaurants and malls. How much more of the same do you really need?

eweezerinc September 14th, 2005, 02:06 AM Lexinton is great, but I think it needs to do some more banking in on its heritage throughout the city. Most people have a very upper-middle class suburbia idea of Lexington, which I find to be rather true from when I visit. It is a total college town, but that shouldn't limit it to majority suburban development. It does however seem that there are some fun projects that could make it a much more competitive city in the region outside the college spectrum.

Lexington is a nice place to live. Hey I have family in Roanoke, however I think your metro numbers is off.
According to the Roanoke County website http://www.yesroanoke.com/location.cfm
Roanoke MSA is 235,932

Now I'm sure that St.Matthews will retain it's no.1 spot they have just confirmed the renovation on the news.
Sorry Lexington. :)
Lexy September 16th, 2005, 04:46 AM Lexington has a great indy music scene in it. Go to High on Rose if you don't believe me. You have to understand that lexington was a small town up until about 30 years ago. Toyota and UK really kicked in and put it on the map. In its growth, it could be slightly compared to Nashville and its suburbs.

Originally a few months ago on all the stations the plan was in the works for the rentovation.
But yesterday on Fox 41 they confirmed that they have started the renovation on mall St. Matthews.

WHY??? That is terrible. That place used to rock late at night with great bands. I can't tell you how many times I had a good brew and equally good entertainment at that bar. What a shame.
eightiesfan September 30th, 2005, 03:30 AM Not really sure why, it's an awesome building. I think the people who owned it have started a company that makes salsas, salad dressings, etc. And I have not heard if anything is going to reopen in the space, I'd love to open something there.

Hit me back with an email and lets see if this is a go..if the 15th doesn’t work…lets chose another Sat.

WOW!
That is a GREAT shot of Lexington. I love that it is during the winter.
I mostly go down to Lex in the winter and I find lexington to be rather attractive in snow. ;)
Thanks for posting it.
Ian604 March 4th, 2006, 06:09 PM I haven't been able to sleep well in the last few weeks so last weekend I decided to start utilizing that time as creatively as I could. I took several photos between the hours of 3:45am and 4:40am. My computer is being dificult but I should have them up soon.
krosejr March 23rd, 2006, 05:42 PM ^^Sounds great! Can't wait to see them... :)

These would have better if I had noticed that there was a smudge on my lens. I was so mad, but I decided to post them anyway. These are of in and around downtown. I was out and about and had my camera, so I took some shots.

This is Lexington, Kentucky.
BTW, nice pictures guys! :)
Ian604 May 9th, 2006, 06:43 PM He's referring to the University of Kentucky (UK). I disagree though. I think we're going to see a very different Lexington evolve over the next ten years.

Ian604 May 10th, 2006, 04:09 AM They're from Louisville, about 70 miles west. They perform often in Lexington though. They're very supportive of Kentucky rappers and often show up at CD release parties and other events to support emerging Kentucky rappers.

seicer July 18th, 2007, 05:40 AM Posted many new photographs of Lexington, Kentucky on my web-site article at UrbanUp. You can read more about it here (http://www.urbanup.net/index.php?q=cities&p=13&type=2) and view the 100+ photographs already on the site. The site is still new and in its infancy, and much of the text was copied from articles that I wrote at other web-sites, but it's coming along!

You can find my newest downtown photos at my web-site, UrbanUp, here (http://www.urbanup.net/index.php?q=cities&p=13&photos=1).
1. Central Business District, looking west towards Lexington Financial Center.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071104/photos/full_1_2846.jpg
2. A view of the northern Lexington region. The street running northeast is Limestone and has seen an uptick in building restorations and investments.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071104/photos/full_1_2677.jpg
3. Looking towards the Vine Street corridor, which consists primarily of newer office structures. This was formerly the Chesapeake and Ohio rail line, which were removed in the late 1960s. Hundreds of structures that would have been adaptable to lofts today were demolished, and has been called the city's "biggest regret."
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071104/photos/full_1_1420.jpg
4. Central Business District.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071104/photos/full_1_532.jpg
5. Old Fayette National Bank Building. Was the city's tallest for many, many years.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071104/photos/full_1_106.jpg
6. A void created by the demolition of Woolworth's. The store closed in the mid 1990s after being restored in the early 1990s (...), and was demolished ~2003. The lot (and the bottom right corner store and attachments) are owned by The Webb Cos., the city's largest developer (they developed the Lexington Financial Center). Most of the remaining buildings are vacant and are not that historical, and will most likely be demolished in a few years for a new development project.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071104/photos/full_1_716.jpg
7. Our Courthouse complex takes up two blocks and has a nice plaza with water features.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071104/photos/full_1_454.jpg
8. Rupp Arena/Lexington Center. The massive parking lot to the south now qualifies for TIF so it stands to be redeveloped.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071104/photos/full_1_1052.jpg
9. My downtown, looking east, from my apartment complex. It is one of the tallest buildings in the city :)

Many more photos coming later this week! Stay tuned to this thread!
bigwilley November 5th, 2007, 01:06 AM YAY!!! KITTY!!!! i say that picture just made the thread 10x betta!!! BTW nice pics when i saw that first pic with the LFC in it, i thought it was fake cuz it was so purtty
Ian604 November 5th, 2007, 01:25 AM Yeah very bright coloring. Good photos. The Courthouse Plaza looks really nice from that height.
card04 November 5th, 2007, 05:38 AM You got some very good pics I like the first one, the Lexington Financial Center looks great
ScraperDude November 5th, 2007, 09:09 PM I love LEX but it's time for some additions to the skyline. Including a new tallest :)
What can I say... I'm a height whore.
card04 November 6th, 2007, 05:48 AM What skyscraper fan isnt? I say replace the crazy gold thing in the bottom left hand corner of the first pic with somthing say 500" or so.
seicer November 6th, 2007, 03:19 PM I actually like the crazy gold thing :) < PNC Bank I think.
Remove that blighted, brand-new four-story crap that houses the US Attorneys at Vine and Mill. PLEASE.
Ian604 November 7th, 2007, 01:27 AM I could do without every single building between Vine and High with the exception ofone or two at Limestone and CMW
All uninspired trash if you ask me. It definitely was a big mistake tearing it all down.

Links provided go to the building or district at UrbanUp.
1. National City Bank (http://www.urbanup.net/index.php?q=building&p=21&type=) taken from the Lexington Downtown Corporation roof.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071108/photos/full_1_2754.jpg
2. Main and Rose Lofts (http://www.urbanup.net/index.php?q=building&p=15&type=), taken from the roof of the Lexington Downtown Corporation. I will gather more photos in the evening that will better represent the width of the structure. This was originally planned for seven stories but was constructed as four -- but it's enormous size is still a tremendous asset. Crews have completed most of the work on the building -- including the city's first "back in" parking spaces. I assume those are for those who want to load groceries from a planned urban corner market.
I personally love the industrial design of the building. They did this very well and it resembles the building stock that once existed along Vine Street.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071108/photos/full_1_1483.jpg
3. And to think, Main and Rose was once a giant surface parking lot.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071108/photos/full_1_2595.jpg
4. Christ Church Apartments for the elderly. This is where I voted :)
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071108/photos/full_1_2236.jpg
5. The modern front to the Lexington Center (http://www.urbanup.net/index.php?q=building&p=18&type=). This was recently rehabilitated from a 1970s glass-box design to one that is more harmonious to the streetscape. The big box in the back is Rupp Arena, which could be replaced by 2012. It was not renovated with the Lexington Center project and it is showing its age.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071108/photos/full_1_2225.jpg
6. The old front was HIDEOUS.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071108/photos/full_1_54.jpg
7. Hyatt, which is undergoing interior renovations.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071108/photos/full_1_1549.jpg
8. Victorian Square, which has fine dining, shops and art galleries under one roof. It is a series of restored Victorian-esque structures combined into one.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071108/photos/full_1_613.jpg
9. The Kincaid Towers (http://www.urbanup.net/index.php?q=building&p=1&type=) is a 22-floor high-rise in Lexington, Kentucky. It is located along Vine Street between Broadway and Mill Street. Its exterior is polished buff concrete with blue tinted glass, with terraces on the 5th, 10th, 14th, and 21st floor.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071108/photos/full_1_1548.jpg
10. Phase one of the 500's on the Main (http://www.urbanup.net/index.php?q=building&p=20&type=) project, adjacent to Victorian Square and the Lexington Center.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071108/photos/full_1_1344.jpg
11. The spire and additional buildings will be constructed soon in phase two.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20070727/photos/full_1_1165.jpg
12. Ah... where I live. Downtown Lexington (http://www.urbanup.net/index.php?q=cities&p=13&type=2). Looking west along Main Street in downtown Lexington.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071108/photos/full_1_1598.jpg
13. I fucking hated getting up to the top of the World Trade Center. Ladders suspended many, many feet above a never-ending staircase. And I'm afraid of heights. One building was a ladder... the other was a staircase. Go figure.
From left to right: Lexington Center, 500's on the Main, and Victorian Square.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071108/photos/full_1_1059.jpg
14. Looking along South Broadway. The massive parking lot on the right is part of Rupp Arena and it replaced hundreds of homes from the historic South Hill district. It is slated for redevelopment eventually.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071108/photos/full_1_157.jpg
15. Looking along Vine Street at the haphazard building styles. Vine Street was once a railroad corridor for the city, and when the tracks were removed, major urban renewal began that removed most of the historic and warehouse-styled buildings that are so very much desired today.
That white stub of a building houses U.S. Attorneys offices. It is a POS and was just a basic steel frame (suburban buildings are built better than this) with a faux "stone" facade that was prefabricated and placed by a crane.
http://www.urbanup.net/content/20071108/photos/full_1_2187.jpg
16. Triangle Center is in the foreground and was a planned shopping center.

I am finally getting around to posting new photographs. Currently working on the site -- it currently dumps all buildings under Lexington, although they should be spreading out on the individual subpages (i.e. Downtown). And some of the photo galleries are insanely large (i.e. Downtown) and I'll probably split those off.

a. Hunt-Morgan House: Historically known as Hopemont, this grand residence was constructed by John Wesley Hunt in 1814, who was first millionaire west of the Alleghenies. Hunt's great-grandson, Dr. Thomas Hunt Morgan, was born in the house in 1866. He was known for his work in genetics and is the only Kentuckian to have won the Nobel Prize.

daytonsuburbanite May 7th, 2008, 07:37 PM Everytime I drive down I75, I wished they had made the interstate closer to the downtown to show it off more. 99% of people driving thru, never see the downtown. What a shame!
Ian604 May 7th, 2008, 07:53 PM Yeah, in one sense I'm glad it doesn't cut through downtown but on the other hand if you dont look over at just the right time through the tree line you'd never know we have a skyline.
Whosville May 8th, 2008, 02:18 AM Yeah, in one sense I'm glad it doesn't cut through downtown but on the other hand if you dont look over at just the right time through the tree line you'd never know we have a skyline.
That's perfectly fine by me. There are so many advantages to keeping the Interstates away from the city a little that I am fine if the people driving from Atlanta to Detroit don't see the skyline.
If it is that big of a deal, you could put a large "Welcome to Lexington" sign on 75 and 64 with the skyline in the background so that drivers realize that Lexington has a skyline.
Great job Seicer.
seicer May 8th, 2008, 02:57 AM Well, look at Huntington. The interstate had two choices: drive through the city on an at-grade highway, clearing out at least two blocks for ~10 miles for a six-lane interstate. That would have displaced thousands and severed the city in half. And if that had been constructed, just think of how ugly it'd be now -- with all that 1960s concrete and steel goodness.
Or, bypass it to the south. About one or two miles south on average. Little to no views of the city, and urban development for that matter -- until just recently. Go in any closer and you'd be disrupting some of the wealthiest homes in the city.
With Lexington, having an urban freeway would have meant the end of South Hill with one proposal, and the usage of Vine for a freeway with another. A depressed and elevated freeway were proposed, depending on the alignment. The psychological barriers aside, this would have funneled traffic into the city but would have required the demolitions of thousands of properties. I guess it was no worse than when Rupp completed wholesale clearing, but...
Lexy May 8th, 2008, 03:35 AM While I think that Lexington is unique with there being no interstate in downtown, I do think that in the long run it makes it "harder" to market downtown in some respects. Me personally, I would LOVE to see Newtown Pike turned into a full-fledged limited access highway with direct access to I-75. Terminate it downtown and just let it fade into the new portion that half-circles downtown to the south.
Ian604 May 8th, 2008, 08:32 AM I'm not saying a highway through downtown would be better or worse. I was just rambling really.

Ian604 May 19th, 2008, 07:49 PM I love the view from that garage at Euclid and Upper.
The top of the CenterCourt garage is great too!
Whosville May 20th, 2008, 01:14 AM I like that last one with the little park. I like Lexington's little parks in its odd spaces. You could probably do a whole thread on those little parks.
Ian604 May 20th, 2008, 04:46 AM I love our pocket parks!
RuppManager June 10th, 2008, 05:13 AM The last time I was in downtown Lexington at 3am, UK had won the '96 championship - a wonderful experience I will never forget (what I can remember). Btw, in '98 I was at Euclid/Woodland.
Long live Tolly-Ho, home of the Ho-burger!!
I have great pic from that night, i'll find it and post it. 100,000 drunk roaring UK fans. Great night... even though some guy in a tree with a 12 pack hit my friend in the head with an empty beer bottle toss.

Ian604 February 13th, 2009, 02:51 AM Oooh! Nice aerial.
I love how The Woodlands stands out so prominently in the foreground.
I wish the shot were wide enough to get Kirwin/Blanding and the condo building just South of the Woodlands.
It's a great shot though!
