View Full Version : Sarajevo 1991, right before the war. Peace protests!!
Hepec March 24th, 2005, 08:31 AM Dear guest. What follows next is a fragment of moments from history in the making, caputred on camera and forever frozen in deep wounds of atrocities that would forever change this once beautiful country.
The following photos are those of an appeal for peace and concerts in the name of peace for brotherhood and unity from citizens of every corner of former Yugoslavia. These peaceful pictures depict only a fragment of what Yugoslavia once used to be right before the tides of darkness that followed.

Markko March 24th, 2005, 08:40 AM Cool, where do you get pics like that?
jimm March 24th, 2005, 08:45 AM Nice haircuts ;)
salvius March 24th, 2005, 08:46 AM :(
It could have been that way too, if it wasn't for some external meddling.
Бане March 24th, 2005, 10:15 AM :( :(
Oh man you shouldn't have posted this. I think most were people against the war, but a few extremists were allowed to stir up all the hatred and turn people against each other... :(
Duckzilla March 24th, 2005, 10:56 AM You remember those: Jugoslavija, Jugoslavija, Jugoslavija....!
Ahhh...:(
Majevčan March 24th, 2005, 02:46 PM I think I saw >>Hakela<< on one of the pics :D

MIMICA March 25th, 2005, 02:28 AM Wow, how many things would be different if this pointless war...
yugoboy March 25th, 2005, 03:05 AM How sad! Looking at those old Yugoslav flags...ohh it's just so sad...:(
Kommandant Mark March 25th, 2005, 07:18 AM The saddest thing...you are looking at something which we can never again regain:(

^^^^Just remember Duckie-you're the one who said it.
Ti licno prosipas propagandu po forumu: "Srpsko ovo, Srpsko Ono"... Zbog tebe Mila nije vise s nama, ali jebi ga.
To sto si ti malo vise "ponosan" svojim Srbima, to licno ne tjera mene da u svakoj recenici naglasim " muslinansko Sarajevo, Muslimansko ovo, ili ono, jer postoji razlika izmedju vjere i nacije. Bosanac moze biti i musliman, i katolik, i pravoslavac, i jevrej i bilo ko.A srb je srb. I sta bi ti rekao nekom sto se vrati da zivi u (npr.) "Srbinje" umjesto "Foca". Pa to je toliko ponizno za sve gradne Foce koji nisu Srbi.
Pa da budemo fer, ljudi su stradali na svakoj strani zbog nekih ovnova koji su se borili za fotelju i to je posljedica rata. Ali sta vrijedi naglasavati koje je kriv sada? Sto je bilo, bilo je.
Budi realan.. I ja sam.
-E pa, kao sto ti rece: "a moglo je i bez toga..."

I wouldn't use the example of Kosovo, since its situation is exactly what Bosniaks are arguing against in the case of Bosnia. Vojvodina's autonomy is Tito's construct, and was removed in the end because it cost too much $$$.
I have tried to point out the double standard before - you can't argue that Albanians in Kosovo have the right to claim indipendence, if you don't recognize that Serbs in Bosnia (or indeed in Croatia before they were pretty much all cleansed, a taboo subject for some reason) where they constitute majority do as well.
'Who' started the war in Bosnia is also a pointless question, since there's plenty of blame to go around.
Obviously, Duckzilla's 'ko je ko' statement carries no weight, since the victims of the war were, as per usual, ordinary people. I doubt very many really wanted to see the situation develop as it did.
Hepec March 26th, 2005, 05:59 AM I do agree with you salvius-to some extent. Maybe I carried it a little too far. But wouldn't you agree with me to some extent? Again, f**k it. It's pointless. We're all in same shit now.
salvius March 26th, 2005, 06:45 AM ^ I would agree with you to some extent indeed, and would echo that these discussions are very much pointless. They say time heals all wounds, so I sure as hell hope that will be the case in BiH as well.

I just think it's sad that the dream they all had was broken by those dam Yugoslav "polotians". :(
space_invader March 29th, 2005, 09:44 PM Beautiful Sarajevo on the banner of skyscraper today, 'embossomed soft in trees'.
springtime greetings from glasgow.
space invader. :)
SpotlessMind March 29th, 2005, 10:03 PM ^^Yup, in the Golden Valley! :)
This might sound corny but I'm proud to see it up here for the whole world to see. Just 9 years ago the city was hell on earth and totally forgotten/ignored by the world.
However, it did overcome and the best payback out there that it's citizens could have at those who terrorized them for 4 years is to be back on their feet and let Sarajevo shine again in the valley.
You can destroy its buildings but you can't destroy its spirit!
space_invader March 29th, 2005, 10:35 PM @spotless:
There's just something about the place. . . . travelled in Turkey a bit, stayed in Bursa on a few occasions - there is a sense of something similar. I've never been to Sarajevo, my experience is just words and pictures.
said elsewhere on this forum but i feel the scale is right, the relationship between man and street, building and nature, city is not made up of vistas like classical or certain middle eastern cities but is a more montage-like, non-linear experience.
what does sarajevo mean?
i know saray (or is it serai?) is palace in turkish . . .
and spotless?
I'm proud for ya (and i know you don't need a smiley!)
ps. you know, i actually really rate that old yugo flag. s'cool.
space_invader March 29th, 2005, 10:37 PM hey i just realised - there's probably loads of bloody vista in sarajevo!!
i should really just visit and find out.
CVRKI March 29th, 2005, 11:13 PM Great, let's stir up some bad memories. :sleepy:
SpotlessMind March 29th, 2005, 11:15 PM Space-Invader:
Yah, Saray is Turkish for governor's castle. Since the Y does not exist in the Bosnian alphabet it was dropped and replaced by J and EVO was added to it, what basicly means ''of''. So I guess it's a Slavic name based on a Turkish word.
And you should visit. Enough to see and do. And most importantly, you will be welcomed.
BosRoker March 29th, 2005, 11:31 PM I'm pretty sure that the name means "Palace in the valley"
SpotlessMind March 29th, 2005, 11:33 PM I'm pretty sure that the name means "Palace in the valley"
Castle=Palace
But I've never heard of the 'in the valley' part! Perhaps a Turk could help out here.
CVRKI March 29th, 2005, 11:43 PM I've been thaught that Sarajevo first appeared with the name Saray Ovasi wih the meaning "fields surrounding the palace (rather castle)" as the city was built on these very fields. I'd like to know if this castle was in the city itself or on one of surrounding mountains as with of BiH places (maybe this Saray it's either the castle of Hodidjed or Vrhbosna...)
space_invader March 29th, 2005, 11:45 PM I luuuurve those twin towers!
nice retro sci-fi; from afar anyway.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say. I think the name Saray Ovasi eventually transformed into the name Sarajevo.
The saray in question is the governor's palace.. I'm assuming it was probably built by Isa-beg Ishaković, the founder of the town. So it's not a pre-Ottoman castle we're dealing with.
For some reason or another, Vrhbosna no longer really existed when the Ottomans came. However, archeological discoveries suggest that the heart of the city was located on top of modern day... ::drumroll:: Skenderija. During the construction they found marble collumns, presumably of the cathedral to st. Peter that had once existed there.
Hodidjed still exists, and in the very center of the city too. In the early 18th century after the raid of prince Eugene the fortifications of the city were strengthened and so Hodidjed was rebuilt and improved. Today it makes up the bottom foundations of the Bijela Tabija.

No to svakako nije tema ove naše emisije koja se zove "Izvorište", tema naše emisije su stari, prastari narodni običaji!" :hilarious :hilarious :hilarious

The Moderators didn't choose to bann her at all, and she isn't banned. She simply got fed up with all that was around, that she eventually had decided she'd leave the forum. It was alittle strange for someone to leave the forum, but she had good reason, and I respect that. :)

Sarajka April 3rd, 2005, 01:34 AM Beautiful photographs, Hepec. :) I'm very pleased to see that you included a photo of the buses; it speaks to how strong was the desire of many people from all regions to see Yugoslavia remain united, and fair. It's a very flattering compliment to the city of Sarajevo that many of them chose this place to express their conviction.
