What are ten things that you'd like to see happen in Atlanta?
I'm looking for developments, events, improvements, social issues, cultural issues etc.

If possible - I'm looking for what would be improvements. Sarcastic swipes at the city could probably go in another thread (or forum).

Thanks.

^^Like that one? He'll be brigged?

Okay . . . (in no order)

1.) Some filler skyscrapers to connect the clusters.
2.) Extension of the MARTA system.
3.) Expansion of the already shiitie zoo.
4.) More parks set aside before the big downtown boom (it's coming).
5.) The World's Fair.
6.) Atlantans start to think they live in Georgia, not Atlanta.
7.) A presidential visit, you'd think they'd be more often.
8.) A new mayor, not that Franklin is bad, but we could have better.
9.) Some parade other than MLK day.
10.) A decrease in crime.

10 is a lot, I don't know if I can come up with that many. So a few of these are kinda lame just to fill the bill.

1) Catch up to its size in terms of public transit. Mainly, add new lines to the MARTA rail.
2) Bring together the various parts of the downtown area with some vibrant infill.
3) Improve the poverty and crime issues that plague certain parts of the city.
4) Establish a cultural district on par with the French Quarter or Deep Ellum.
5) By the same token, work on attracting artists and producing art that says "Atlanta", regardless of whether it's hip-hop or sculpture.
6) Break its reputation as a corporate city.
7) Be assertive in giving people incentives to move back into the city from the 'burbs.
8) Gain a reputation for progressive education programs.
9) As always, add lots more buildings to the skyline :)
10) Annex Southern California.

1. More inter-city movement.
2. A more vibrant Downtown
3. Expansion on the MARTA

1. Retail that you would actually want to shop at between midtown and dowtown
2. Less crime
3. Less traffic
4. A new signature tower downtown
5. A few new tall residential towers around Centennial Park
6. A new signature tower in Buckhead
7. More of a focus on downtown instead of Buckhead
8. Extend MARTA
9. A random demand for more highrises:D
10. A park somewhat like Millenium Park in Chicago.

thanks!

So far, I like the responses.

My favourites other than the ones that propose reducing crime, poverty, and a reliance on automobiles are the ones that urge a focus on identity away from Buckhead (this is the only area that many Northerners recognize) and those that urge locating to Midtown/Downtown.

It's funny, I'm a Bostonian who is moving to ATL. A friend from Boston is a fave artist who exhibits regularly in Buckhead (www.bennettstgallery.com. galleries, her name is Jen Bradley, and the gallery is great even if she's not your cup of tea) and she had ZERO idea about Midtown, Virginia Higlands, L5P, Downtown, East Atlanta, Cabbagetown, or Decatur. Once ATL solidifies its identity as being "more than Buckhead" to out-of-towners, then it will take-off even more.

Funny, Buckhead is not one of my favourite places in ATL.

Bennett Street isn't exactly the nicest part of Buckhead so I'm surprised she hasn't had a chance to see the rest of the city. There are some nice residential neighborhoods around that part of Peachtree but the environment on Peachtree itself is strips malls and a total lack of respect for the pedestrian.

Next time she is down here after you move, you'll have to blow her mind by showing her Atlanta is more than a parking lot.

1. underground music/concert scene like it had 3-4 years ago; plenty of shows, good show promotion, 5-8 good venues for that music.
2. fewer transplant georgians and suburban loving assholes.
3. better mass transit.
4. more mass transit.
5. fewer rude bums, send 'em to Nashville or Charlotte.
6. oh, REDESIGN THE ROAD SYSTEM. not sure how, but it's just...too chaotic. get rid of those stupid yellow "dividers."
7. cheaper parking...maybe a megagarage or two.
8. get rid of the surface lots in midtown...put up a bigass plaza i guess, that'd be cool.
9. less office vacancy.
10. DOWNTOWN NOT CLOSING ON THE WEEKENDS...too much of it closes.

Less crime
More vibrant downtown
More inner city growth
Less suburban growth
Domeless football stadium
No more superbowls in the dome
Downtown retail
Less strip clubs
People who claim Atlanta's the best but they live in the suburbs.
Less traffic.

There won't be much of a reason for 3 & 4 if you also want 7. What downtown does need is more 30 minute / 1 hour / 2 hour parking to promote more visits, but the huge glut of cheap parking around downtown's edge explains the limited usage of transit.

More Atlantan's stay home instead of vacationing in the NC Mountains.

Someone finds a pulse in downtown Atlanta after 5 and on weekends.

The rest of Georgia secedes from Atlanta.

GA, SC, TN, AL install toll booths at their borders with the new State of Atlanta.

Atlanta isn't really lacking discount airlines.

If Delta goes out of business, that's quite a few people losing their jobs.

My list is ranked mostly by probability of it ever happening

1)The city enacting stricter zoning rules requiring ground level retail along ALL major roads in the CBD(midtown and dt).

2)A team of developers coming together to develop the Midtown square property and the surface lots from 10th to 14th into highrises with a retail covering the entire span with "destination" retail included.

3)Streetscape improvement of Peachtree all the way to Buckhead

4)Adding more tourist/entertainment options around centennial park like the Nascar museum or an observation tower w/ retail at the base.

5)Redeveloping more roads like Ivan Allen Boulevard (currently uc), especially downtown

6)A new park on the westside of the city

7)The city creating height limits througout the city, limiting future highrises to the clusters of dt, midtown and buckhead.

8)Implosion of the peachtree st block south of 5 points and starting from scratch

9)Bury all power lines in the city

10)Converting the downtown connector into a tunnel with a long park on top of it.

In regards to ATL's adult entertainment scene, chalk that up to Atlanta rappers who like to frequent them. As long as Atlanta hip-hop artists like strip joints, the strip clubs will be there.

1. A huge mass transit system
2. Vibrant/walkable downtown-midtown-buckhead corridor that has depth as well
3. Less homeless... well, while I'm at it, no homless!
4. Highspeed rail for connection to Bham, Nashville, and Charlotte. And commuter rail for the exurbs and Athens and Macon

I definitely agree with a new Coke building. I wonder why they never built a bigger building that stands out?

AubieTurtle
May 6th, 2005, 07:05 AM
At one time they had talked about building a signature tower on what is now the aquarium/WoC property. But the timing was never right. The cola business hasn't been great for the past decade or so and Coke has had lots of lawsuits, C level turnover, etc. as distractions.

I would be happy if they would just do a major renovation of their current campus. It is a truely horrible urban design. The whole thing is surrounded by fences and parking lots. If they could somehow redesign the layout to become a transition between Centennial Place and Georgia Tech, it would be great. Hopefully the change in land usage after the aqaurium opens will improve the neighborhood to an extent that they won't feel the need to be Fortress Coke.

Actually, Atlanta's large adult entertainment industry has more to do with the city's convention trade than anything else. Look also at Orlando (Orange Blossom Trail) and Las Vegas (the whole place) as examples.

yeah....Pepsi owns Mountain Dew...which caters to lazy, young, extreme sports types. These young people who surf, skateboard, bike...etc all day dont get jobs. They dont want jobs. They want to be young forever..like the people in Lords of Dogtown. Eventually, the real world catches up with them...and their parent kick their asses out of the house. Not having any money saved up because they spent in on new extreme sports equipment or partying...they are poor. Also, not graduating high school or going to college, not having previous jobs.....they cant find any way to support themselves. This leads to becoming a petty criminal....usually somewhere in Southern California or Flordia.
