View Full Version : The ABSOLUTE top 10 skylines in US and why
Jay March 25th, 2005, 07:17 PM Post yours...pics are welcome as well!
Mine! In order-
NY City- HUGE skyline sprawling a combined 4 miles. Could have 8 1000 footers in 10-15 years, God I can't wait for the westside redevelopment and WTC! Not to mention, BOA, NYT, Con EDISON, Gehry, Calatrava, will all have many tower over 800 feet!
Chicago- Insanely massive skyline along lake michigan, 2 new 1000 footers down the road!
Philadelphia- huge, powerful, tall, will improve greatly in time.
Seattle- Wow, can we say dense tall and huge, the sity is amazing looking, and so underrated.
San Francisco- Charming, alomost as dense as manhattan, very good porportions.
Los Angeles- Bold, Library Tower makes skyline very powerful.
Minneapolis- This is one underrated skyline! Nearly as large as Philly and almost as tall! Minneapolis is great.
Boston- Dense, Charming New England town, got quite a bit of tall buildings that look real cool.
Miami- Miami is so modern, it's like the Dubai of the US, lots of cool plans ahead.
Atlanta- Looks nice, not very dense but it still makes the bottom of my list.
Ones that didn't quite make it but have a respectable skyline-
Portland OR
San Diego
Charlotte
Indianapolis
Pittsburgh
Dallas
Houston
Austin
Baltimore

SChristopher March 25th, 2005, 07:50 PM 1. Chicago, I like its colors and contrasts and height better than any skyline in the world probably, the effect the lake front has on it is really great as well.
http://www.hichicago.org/images/chicago_skyline.jpg
2. New York City - The varied ages of the buildings, mass and overall density. Of course the water is a nice backdrop on this one as well.
http://www.richp.com/pics/roadtrip-7-2002/080-New-York.jpg
Los Angeles - Its a pretty good size and is very new compared to many skylines, it also has a good amount of old which unfortunately is not really visible from most views. I love the height and the teired look.
http://www.americaontheroad.it/immagini/los_angeles_skyline1.jpg
4. Seattle - Massive gourgeous, tall, moderately dense.
http://www.visit-seattle.com/seattle-skyline.jpg
5. Houston - Tall, bold, a little cold, it probably could be 3rd or 4th but to me Seattle, LA, and Houston are tied in the US for '3rd' skyline
http://www.globalgeografia.com/album/usa/houston.jpg
6. Atlanta - Sprawling unique skyline that almost seems to showcase each individual building from some angles, it has some good height and its always on the move.
http://www.paulscharffphotography.com/Atlanta_Skyline.JPG
(some)
7. Philadelphia - I dont know what does it for this one, it just seems to fit together real nicely as one.
http://www.ronsaari.com/stockImages/philadelphia/philadelphiaSkyline2.jpg
8. Dallas - Probably shouldnt be so far down on the list, and the reson it is for me is because some of Dallas' buildings on an individual scale I find not very attractive, but the whole skyline fits together very nicely.
http://www.dallassky.com/wpe12.jpg
9. Minneapolis - Good looking tall and dense. Great mixture of styles.
http://www.nvo.com/beaulier/nss-folder/scrapbook/minneapolis_skyline_summer.jpg
10. Pittsburgh - This one is one of my favorites because of the geographic location of where the downtown was built, I love the density, the height and the stark feeling of commerce I get from this one.
http://www.skylinepictures.com/Driendl_Pittsburgh_Skyline_p64_large.jpg
Honorable Mentions To -
San Francisco, Boston, Cincinnati, Miami, New Orleans, Kansas City, Denver, and Charlotte (maybe a few more) which are all great skylines but just not on the top of my personal favorites.

The anti-cheesehead March 25th, 2005, 09:22 PM Well, my personal top two skylines never change, but the rest of them do, depending on what mood I'm in. Keep in mind, these are my favorite skylines, not necessarily my favorite cities.
Here's mine:
New York
Chicago
Philly
LA
the rest aren't really in any order
Seattle
Houston
Dallas
San Fran
Minneapolis (not just because I live here, I really do think it's a top 10 skyline)
Pittsburgh
I used to have Atlanta on my top 10, but after I saw a few pictures of it at certain angles, it really turned me off. Specifically, the angles where it looks like the towers are miles apart. It just looks weird.
HoustonTexas March 25th, 2005, 09:33 PM New York

Jay March 25th, 2005, 11:38 PM Nice pics!
I forgot to mention Denver in mine, that would rank with SF in terms of size. When I first saw it I was very impressed.
I agree Chigeorge, New York is in a leage of it's own, Chicago too, every other city in North America is a distant second. Mainly because of their height. This is amazing, I found this a while back at urban planet.
How many 800 footers (too roof) each american city will have by 2015 if the likely projects go through.
New York: 26 (has 12 or 13 now!!!)
Chicago- 14
Philly- 4
Miami-2
Vegas-1
Cities with no buildings 800 or over U/c are not on there even if they have 800+ footers.
Jay March 26th, 2005, 12:02 AM When you show a pic of NY you must show the whole skyline LOL. Midtown alone is large enough to swallow up chicago in width (they are about the same legnth) Downtown manhattan is 2 Los Angeleses combined, and brooklyn and JC could swallow Denver whole! Past central park the island goes on for 5 more miles, ALL of 20-30 story apartment towers, you can't get NY's skyline in one shot, it's by far the most massive in the world, it dwarfs Chicago, It dwarfs Hong Kong, And Chi and HK dwarf every other city.
Here are some NY pics!

*Sweetkisses* March 26th, 2005, 12:09 AM Yea, New york is in a class all by itself truth be told.
james2390 March 26th, 2005, 12:15 AM 1. New York City - Great form mixture of age and architecture
2. Chicago - My favorite skyline of all time - The best mix of architecture I have ever seen.
3. Atlanta - Very unique skyline, great mix of newer architecture. Not only Downtown, but Midtown and Buckhead
4. Dallas - Same as above, great mix of newer architecture
5. LA - Beautiful form, the city that makes boxes look good.
6. Boston - Great mix of architecture, and interestingly placed buildings. Boston has a nice setting aswell.
7. Seattle - Great highrises and denseness
8. Detroit - Beautiful older highrises and architecture
9. Houston - Some bland skyscrapers and bad lighting at dark, but the skyline somewhat makes up for it.
10. Miami - Lots of construction and beautiful setting
Jay March 26th, 2005, 01:00 AM Detroit before Philly?
Philly isn't even on there lol
Odd but I guess it's your opinion.
Wu-Gambino March 26th, 2005, 01:15 AM 1. NYC and Chicago (tie) - NYC has every high-rise architectural style and is incredibly massive. Chicago's is more organized and has a better relation with the water.
3. Seattle - BoA is beautiful and the skyscrapers are very nice.
4. Philadelphia - One Liberty and Two Liberty are beautiful, as is the rest of the skyline.
5. San Francisco - Nice mix of architecture.
6. Los Angeles - Also a nice mix of architecture, if Century City and Downtown were mixed, it would be in my top five.
7. Minneapolis - Some of the nicest postmodern towers over 700 feet, IDS is beautiful and the skyline is very sleek.
8. Boston - wasn't to high up until I saw this pic (click on the smaller pic, this file is huge, almost 8000 pix. wide):
http://tinypic.com/2ciiqd (http://freefilehosting.net/file.cfm?id=C0255989-CF1F-D571-A786B0C3F4434C20)
9. Pittsburgh - Great skyline with nice settings.
10. Atlanta - Some nice buildings, but too postmodern and spread out.

Philly isn't even on there lol
Odd but I guess it's your opinion.
I really like Philly's buildings individualy, but together they don't make that much of an interesting skyline. Same goes with Minneapolis for me.
Jay March 26th, 2005, 03:08 AM ^oh ok...
I guess that's a little different than how I do it, Personally one building can make a skyline twice as nice, the library tower in LA freakin rules.
*Sweetkisses* March 26th, 2005, 03:26 AM ^^ Yea the library tower is nice. Its what makes the skyline actually
The anti-cheesehead March 26th, 2005, 03:40 AM The Library Tower is one of those buildings that I think really fits the city that it's in. I don't think the Library Tower would look right anywhere else, besides maybe Miami. It would look really weird in Chicago or NY.
jmancuso March 26th, 2005, 03:42 AM it's been over 3 years but new york's skyline still looks odd to me with out the world trade center.

djm19 March 26th, 2005, 06:38 AM I think the library tower is the perfect fit for LA. Its very business looking, but also like it belongs behind a palm tree.
Lmichigan March 26th, 2005, 07:04 AM I'm won't state mine just yet, but I'm really surprised to see Detroit only have turned up once, here. I don't expect it to make the top ten of many, but when many are mentioning Cincinnati, Richmond, San Antonio and others as honorable mentions, I worry that no on even remembers the city. lol

HoustonTexas March 26th, 2005, 07:05 AM San Antonio has a very beautiful skyline, and its very overlooked...
james2390 March 26th, 2005, 07:08 AM ^ Yeah it is
Lmichigan March 26th, 2005, 07:09 AM Yeah, it is a decent skyline often overlooked, but so is Detroit's, IMO. I guess a lot of people hate it, though.
HoustonTexas March 26th, 2005, 07:11 AM I like Detroit's, I just wish the (forgot name) 5 tower complex was closer to the Downtown area...
Lmichigan March 26th, 2005, 07:12 AM I'm just surprised more people didn't even pick it in their "runner's up" category:

4.Dallas (The BOA Plaza with its light and the Rennaisance Tower with its top.)
http://soulofamerica.com/images2/photostx2/Dallas_skyline_night.jpg
5.Boston (The split skyline makes it look like two seperate cities.)

6.San Fran (Very, very dense looking)
http://www.soulofamerica.com/images/photosca/sf/SF_skyline_at_night.jpg
7.Los Angeles (Many tall, beautiful towers.)
http://www.memoriesoflove.com/Graphics%20int%20for%20web/losangeles6687-L_lg.jpg
8.Charlotte (Small skyline but BOA made it look great)
http://www.functionforge.com/charlotte_skyline.jpg
9.Minneapolis (A dense-looking city)
http://www.nursent.com/images/State%20Pages/MinnSkyline.jpg
10.Denver (I just like it. Not good enough reason? Well deal with it.)
http://www.denver.org/images/home/1.jpg
Runner-up.
New York (Way too many skyscrapers. Look like a soup of towers and few individual towers seen.)
Miami (Will be rank in the top ten when all of its current approved towers are completed)
Las Vegas (Same as Miami)
Atlanta (Towers spread out too much)
This is all I can think of right now.
texasboy March 26th, 2005, 08:30 AM Not to be defensive, but Houston is more than just downtown.
http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v286/fwskyline/houstonpan.jpg
hudkina March 26th, 2005, 11:22 AM I like Detroit's, I just wish the (forgot name) 5 tower complex was closer to the Downtown area...
The Ren Cen is in downtown, and literally only two blocks from the second tallest building in the skyline. The compactness of the rest of the skyline really gives it the appearance of being "far away". Also the fact that the complex is right on the river, while the rest of the skyline is set further back makes it feel even more solitary.
In any case, it's no more isolated than some of the buildings in other skylines.
CincoRanchHoustonRes March 26th, 2005, 08:47 PM Not too be defensive, but Houston is more than just downtown.

10. Atlanta
SRG March 27th, 2005, 08:12 AM I am not going to disagree with those who have posted in this thread, b/c I agree, but let's shift topics real quick.
Of the ABSOLUTE best, some come as surprises. Like for instance, many normal people who live their sad lives w/o a single day of SSC wouldn't have expected Houston's skyline to be the Bomb, or for Dallas to take the Elegant award.
Now, other surprises are Little Rock. They have a very nice, clean skyline, that's very big for a city with around 600,000 people.
Tulsa has the ultimate River City thing going.
http://www.kleefeld.com/tulsa3.jpg
Also, Austin's skyline should be getting more honorable mentions.
SChristopher March 27th, 2005, 08:50 AM ^ Tulsa's skyline is often forgotten by me, and while kinda blocky it is pretty awesome...
SkyHigh529 March 27th, 2005, 08:58 AM 1. New York City - The city that perfected the skyscraper. One word: Chrysler
2. Chicago - One of the most beautiful skylines in the world, and the birthplace of the skyscraper.
3. Seattle - Simply stunning skyline, with a beautiful mountain backdrop to top it off.
4. Philladelphia - An absolutely beautiful city with one of my favorite skylines
5. Atlanta - Linear doesn't always mean boring. Atlanta's linear skyline allows it to better show off each individual tower. Midtown is one of a kind, and One Atlantic is the cherry on top.
6. Minneapolis - A very beautiful skyline and a beautiful city to go along with it.
7. San Francisco - Easily one of the prettiest cities in the world. Does one of the best jobs in taking advantage of its natural sourroundings.
8. Boston - A very unique skyline, not so much big but great attention to detail.
9. Houston - A testament to our country's corporate power and significance.
10. Pittsburgh - The way it is set along the three (I think) rivers comming together, this is an underrated but amazing skyline to see.
Runners-Up
New Orleans
Los Angeles
Dallas
Miami
Tampa
Here is a list of my favorite mid to small sized cities.
1. Nashville - All I have to say is Bellsouth Tower
2. Charllote - Easily one of the best skyscrapers in the country is found here - BOA
3. Little Rock - A small, but very nicely put together skyline. And the riverfront adds so much to it.
4. Jacksonville- Another amazing setting... modis!
5. Austin - Great skyline, better city!
6. San Antonio - My hometown! Remember the Alamo!
7. Memphis - Older, great architecture
8. Birmingham - A very charming city, too bad they have a height limit. Very underrated though.
9. Savannah - The skyline is small, and not tall, but easily one of this country's greatest small cities.
10. Charleston - See Savannah.
streetscapeer March 29th, 2005, 12:14 AM Everyone has some nice choices....and I generally agree with most!

streetscapeer March 29th, 2005, 04:26 AM ^^no not really, I guess it's just a coincidence that the second and last picture look to have a bit of haze..the third pic is just overcast clouds...miami hardly ever gets hazy!
LAuniverse March 29th, 2005, 04:52 AM http://www.miamirealestatetrends.com/Images/StarterImages/1800_Club_NorthToSouth.jpg
Boy does that resemble a Chicago skyline pic taken from the Northside. You've even got the three tall towers resembling Sears, AON, and Hancock.
JB_Gold Coast March 29th, 2005, 04:55 AM It does look similar at first glance, minus the bridges. It looks like a picture of the Edgewater, Uptown and Lakeview areas north of downtown.
chicagogeorge March 29th, 2005, 05:24 AM ^
Yes it somewhat does look similar

i_am_hydrogen March 29th, 2005, 05:29 AM I'm surprised how well ATL is doing in these rankings.
SkyHigh529 March 29th, 2005, 06:24 AM ^Why is that?
SChristopher March 29th, 2005, 06:34 AM I was wondering the same not from a biased point of view, but it IS one of the largest skylines and has some GREAT buildings and a UNIQUE linear skyine ..... I wouldnt doubt it even against a bunch of significantly larger cities
Shawn March 29th, 2005, 06:40 AM Again, for those who have never been to Boston, it's hard to appreciate the actual size of the skyline. Because of Beacon Hill, shots taken from Cambridge make the city look small and stumpy, while shots from the waterfront fail to capture Back Bay or the buildings nearer to the Common. Here are some excellent shots taken by bowesst:
https://wfs.bc.edu/bowesst/ssp/IMG_2139.JPG
https://wfs.bc.edu/bowesst/ssp/2.jpg
And then of course this mega-pano, of which we do not know the photographer to credit, sadly:

TexasBoi March 29th, 2005, 06:47 AM ^^ Boston's is nice but I put it jusssssss outside my top 10
1. New York- obvious reasons
2. Chicago- obvious reasons
3. Los Angeles- i like the skyline with the setting
4. Houston- huge powerful skyline

Azn_chi_boi March 29th, 2005, 02:37 PM That Miami looks exactly like chicagos. Only the bridges and no navy pier gave it away that its Miami.

The anti-cheesehead March 30th, 2005, 09:02 PM Geez. chicagogeorge, you need to take it easy with the pics. I swear, you turn every thread into a Chicago picture book. Half of those pics aren't even skyline pics.
hudkina March 30th, 2005, 09:52 PM A group of people standing around a fountain has nothing to contribute to a "top 10 skylines" thread...
Azn_chi_boi March 31st, 2005, 12:53 AM I dont think its Midway, you could see Midway from the picture,
Anyother idea of where that pic might be taken is at the Oakbrook Terrance Building, one of the tallest building in Illinois outside of Chicago, because that highway is possibly I-294, and you could see greenland..
hudkina March 31st, 2005, 01:32 AM That angle is way too high to be taken from a building. It's probably a shot from a helicopter or an airplane.
*Sweetkisses* March 31st, 2005, 01:40 AM Chicago overload!!!!!!Slow down chicagogeorge we all know how great Chicago is. :)

phillyskyline May 17th, 2005, 03:04 AM I agree with mostly everyone - NYC & Chicago are in a class of their own.
I'm glad to see Philly getting it's props... I think in 10 years, the world will be amazed to see the transformation in this city's skyline. There are 95 highrise projects either in construction or already approved by city council worth more than 3 billion.

Minneapolis612 May 20th, 2005, 02:03 AM when i say Minneapolis (I'm not just saying minneapolis because im from here like a lot of people rank their cities higher than they should be) im talking about stuff like that ^
james2390 May 20th, 2005, 02:11 AM I am surprised how low people are ranking Dallas. It has an amazing skyline with quite a nice collection of highrises (BoA, Bank One, Trammel Crow, Fountain Place, Chase Tower, etc). Dallas definitely has more notable highrises and height than cities like Minneapolis.
Minneapolis612 May 20th, 2005, 02:25 AM How old are you? ^
james2390 May 20th, 2005, 02:32 AM You obviously disagree with my post, but have nothing to back it up with. What are you trying to get through with asking my age? How original. :|

postmodern is not everyone's thing.

SDfan May 20th, 2005, 04:46 AM when i say Minneapolis (I'm not just saying minneapolis because im from here like a lot of people rank their cities higher than they should be) im talking about stuff like that ^
Excuse me but stuff like what? Is it not my opinion, now you may disagree with me, and I may live in SD, but I can honestly say, I love the San Diego Skyline. I love whats going up, what it looks like, the modern look of the high-rises. What you call beautiful may not be what I call beautiful.
Are you just upset cause I didn't put Minneapolis on my list?
(even though I can honestly say I forgot and I do like Minneapolis's skyline)
Uhh, I just put what I thought was best, not what I thought other people might think is.
The anti-cheesehead May 20th, 2005, 04:52 AM IMO, San Diego is better than Minneapolis in every way except for skyline. Of course, Minneapolis's cost of living is better, but that's not an opinion. If it didn't cost so much to purchase a house or condo in SD, I'd probably be living there right now.
Minneapolis612 May 20th, 2005, 05:49 AM I know San Diego is a better city i agree 100% but this is a skyline ranking and i dont think san diego has a top 10 skyline thats all.
SDfan May 20th, 2005, 05:27 PM Welll thats your Opinion. :)
Im just saying to respect mine.
mvasquez May 21st, 2005, 01:02 AM Is this list supposed to be Top 10 Favorite or Top 10 Best?
*Sweetkisses* May 21st, 2005, 02:07 AM ^ Either one. Although best is a matter of opinion.
mvasquez May 21st, 2005, 03:05 AM ^ Either one. Although best is a matter of opinion.
Sorry.. I know either way it is still totally subjective. I meant 10 best from a more rational point of view or just the 10 favorites.
SDfan May 21st, 2005, 06:40 AM I put my personal favorites, I know a lot people would not agree with me so I know Im not being "rational" if thats what you want to say. MY best ten skylines...lol.
Jules May 21st, 2005, 07:13 PM SD is pretty nice. Too bad about that height limit.
mvasquez May 21st, 2005, 11:30 PM I put my personal favorites, I know a lot people would not agree with me so I know Im not being "rational" if thats what you want to say. MY best ten skylines...lol.
Sorry, I wasn't commenting based on your list. I've been to SD several times, and I like San Diego's skyline too. There are a lot of lists from people I'm assuming have never been to other parts of the US. If you've been to cities like NY, Chi, Dal, Houston, etc.. you will be very disappointed with some of the skylines that you see in other cities that made the top 10..mostly due to height reasons and just power from certain buildings. Some skylines are much bigger and more impressive in print..just like celeb pics!! :) I have family from Denver(and CO Springs) and Corpus Christi. They love the skylines there and think they have something to be very proud of, but when they come to my neck of the woods, the topic of the skylines and the differences between them usually pops up.
I wanted to post mine, but wondered if I should use a more scientific approach or if I should just post my favorites.
SDfan May 22nd, 2005, 12:15 AM ^oh Im so if I came of as offended, I wasn't so no worries. :)
I have been to New York and Chicago and there skylines are awsome. I understand that in some skyline you have a few very dominate buildings, like in Cleveland. Those skylines can be very unattractive from certien angles. Then there are cities with a flat skyline (thanks to height limits) and nothing stands out. Im worried San Diego will turn into a flat skyline, or even Orlanda or Birmingham. And I completly forgot about denver, wow, I don't know how that happened.
