Wind, cause it has such a dull, uninspired design. No setbacks and a very Condoish look, it would look better in Aventura,

Runner up is Dupont. Again it looks too much like generic condos. They could have done something alot better with the site. At least its got height though.

Mad Hatter :) , its Definately NEO VERTIKA :bash: :sleepy: , TOO small for that Prime Property next to the Metro Rail, it could have been 52 Floors instead of a small 36 floor, 355 Ft tower, very sad :eek2: :sleepy:

The Island Gardens project is mine. Watson Island should stay a park and not become the domain of the rich and famous.

Others I dislike are the dupont buildings for being a terrible waste of urban space and even though it's done, The Vue.

I liked the Columbus original design for its height and loved the redesign for its ultramodern glass covered and elegantly curving silhouette; IMO it would have been an awesome addition to the downtown/brickell corridor and a perfect compliment to our city's premier office towers (the four seasons, espiritu, wachovia, and the old centrust).
I would actually prefer to wait for the redesign to be built in 10 years than for 50 Biscayne to go up now despite my support for building more and bigger towers on Biscayne Blvd.
I really dislike 50 Biscayne for its showy, wavy, too colorful decorative fascade and its misuse of one the most important locations on the Blvd (across from Bayfront Park and Biscayne Bay).
For those of you in the know: any chance at all that the redesign could be brought back???
P.S. IMO we need more office towers in downtown or at least mix use towers with an ultramodern look and feel like the four seasons.

50 biscayne is horrible, especially since it actually took the place of what could have been a 800 footer

50 biscayne and everglades on the bay for their pretty much wastage of such great land that were really gonna regret in 10 years... everglades on the bay would b amazing if it were taller, the design is great, but for how short they are, it just doesnt work, and their demolition of such a historic building, hate em

and i hate 50 biscayne for the same reasons the rest of us hate it

dupont is also a waste...

were losing too much prime land to mediocore towers... i guess well just have to make up for it by building 1000 footers behind every one to shadow them over... dammit, how i would hate for that to happen...

ChuckScraperMiami#1
March 26th, 2005, 10:35 PM
NIMBY :) , bro I do agree with you on the 50 Biscayne :bash: , it could have been a 800 Footer, as for the Everglades on the bay, I say its great , because its 2 - 49 floor Towers on one city block instead of only One lonely tower, as for saving Art of the old everglades Hotel, well its sad, but a 17 floor, 85 year old, refurburished hotel on a 20 million dollar piece of real estate land would not make it in today's downtown Miami market.
NOW, The Dupont Plaza Twin Condo Towers at 45 and 60 Floors on the smallest piece of property along the Miami river. These Two BULKY Towers are Perfect for that parcel, which Nobody wanted to build on., Until this man from Columbia, UGO Columbo, decided to but it, and will build the Best Towers anyone has ever seen. Believe me :) , I was there and saw the drawings and renderings of this Beautiful Towers that will Make Downtown CORE of Miami Shine on the Miami River at the Brickell Avenue Bridge accross from the Future City of " Miami Circle Park ",
Everyone :) ,With the 3 Huge Towers of One Brickell Icon in the background, wow, Just Wait, You'll start liking these Towers as they rise in the Future of the Most beautiful City of the United States.

Okay...Hands down....The Club.

The Club features an inventive box design with elegant aluminum white railings and a wonderful racing stripe with color straight from the Home Depot parking lot "oops paint mix" section. Nestled between the glass 1221 Brickell, glass Espirto Santo, and mostly glass Jade, the Club manages to outdo the Amerisuites, er, I mean, the Mark.

1. The Club - Just look at it!!
2. 50 Biscayne
3. Coral Plaza - On coral way, its a hideous green and yellow and who knows what other colors. Very cheap looking and its right at the entry to Coral Gables.
4. Island Gardens - Should have stayed public land
5. Vue - At least it was innovative, it was the first to go up along South Miami ave

By the way, have any of you seen the new light feature in the new Federal Courthouse building? The POV from the entrance of Bayside Marketplace looking west at dusk is amazing ! What a great new project in downtown!

Can someone tell me what that stupid wall like thing in the middle of 50 biscayne is?

Is that painted glass and there is something behind it or just a stupid blank mural in the center of the building.

Anyway, i think the building is hideous.

Anyway, i think the building is hideous.Let me get this straight...you mean you don't know what it is and you think it is stupid? Fair enough...
That unique feature is a piece of opaque glass about 40 feet tall and about 120 feet long. Light shines through it and into the apartments from the floor to the ceiling behind the glass. The artwork is by the same artist that designed the "freeform" pillars, the designs on the parking structures and the sidewalk pavers. The sidewalk pavers are to compliment the pavers that already exisist on the sidewalks across the street and are inspired by the soap stone sidewalks that you see in Rio De Janeiro.

50 biscayne will make a big impact to the downtown skyline. Imagine it when looking south from I-395? or I-95 or biscayne, and other angles. Besides, its better than whats at the site now!

Do you see any contradiction in stating that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and then pontificating that it is not the worst design? Obviously, for many of us it is and we have a right to that opinion just as you do to your's.
Or, in suggesting that those who dislike 50 Biscayne are exaggerating its limitations and then stating that those who dislike it exaggerate more than anyone in the universe??
And what's with the ad homine arguments (personal attacks), i.e., beautiful girlfriends, homes, etc.
The point of this thread is for people to state which project or proposal is in their opinion the worse not to argue about it, after all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder; right???
So, instead of attacking others for expressing their opinions
why don't you just state which is the project/proposal that you most dislike and why???

LOL Nimby :) , its not just you, Roark :) is almost like me, we both like everything and also we both like everyone to be happy. You really have to see the both of Us :) in person, you'll agree we are almost alike, sooner or later we all are going to like 50 Biscayne no matter how's it built or what the final look is going to look like. Just be happy, that its finally going up and will finally fill that empty space of almost 20 years since the old columbus hotel was finally torn down :bash: .
Don't worry , be happy !!!, and Go Cranes !!!

Do you see any contradiction in stating that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and then pontificating that it is not the worst design? Yes, and I also saw the irony in "exaggerate more than anyone in the universe"
And what's with the ad homine arguments (personal attacks), i.e., beautiful girlfriends, homes, etc.Whoa....what the...you are going way over my head with "ad homine" ... is that anything like "ad hominem"? If so, I know what ad hominem means. But please...easy on the Latin, I have a hard enough time articulating with English. So, instead of attacking others for expressing their opinionsThere was no intention to attack anyone or anyone's opinion.
I defended the work of an architect, and the work of the people that conceived and are creating 50 Biscayne. It seems that many of the architectural elements are misunderstood (in one post, the glass mural, for instance)...and once there is more understanding about the building, the more it can be appreciated. It's very similar to people...knee jerk reactions without understanding can lead to hasty judgements. Ole Logy got the info and the understanding on the glass mural and still doesn't like it...that's fine.
why don't you just state which is the project/proposal that you most dislike and why???Done. Scroll down a bit to 3/28, and you will find exactly that.

the one project i dislike the most is dupont towers. i really think it's the wrong design for that lot. they need to be taller & thinner with a real emphasis on street interaction, be it retail stores, bodegas, whatever. i'm really disappointed with this project.

next is the club at brickell. it's just ugly.

icon south beach sorry i have to disagree with u there i think icon is architecual genius! that design is the best entrance to sofi plus the back half of the building hangs off the garage and is held up by a circular column i think its great. but i do agree with sf dave the club at brickell just sucks

i dont know a single person that likes club at brickell... cept mayb roark, im just making the assumption... im sure the subtly boxyness of it, complimented by the lack of detail or uniqueness in any way, and its horible square parking garage all come together to create a unique beauty...

and the interiors must be to die for

Like I said before, I found your post to contain contradictions, to miss the point of the thread, and to engage in ad hominem arguments (maybe these were supposed to be tounge in cheeck but if so I did not see the humor).
If you just wanted to correct any misunderstanding regarding the design details of 50 Biscayne all you needed to do was just that and not attack (with references to whom we date or where we live; which IMO is pretty narcissistic, arrogant, elitist, and pretentious) those who dislike the design (most of whom have not given any evidence of misunderstanding the design details).
And like I said before, IMO 50 Biscayne is the worst design because unlike other ugly projects and proposals it stands out because of its coloration and location (unlike say, the Club which is surrounded by other buildings and so somewhat hidden, 50 is right on Biscayne Blvd and will forever mar the city skyline).
P.S. Please communicate to the architect that you are defending the sentiments regarding the design expressed in this thread.

the only thing I like about the Club is that its over 400 feet tall. Brickell view sux--at least before sundown. Its height is also a plus. I agree re ICON. it and bentley bay make a good frame to the entrance to SoBe.

I believe that little red rust colored building is one of Arquitectonica's first buildings in Miami, after the "pink house" and before all the taller condos on Brickell (Imperial, Palace, etc.). It's of cultural significance. If anything, the other taller buildings should treat it with a bit more respect.
