View Full Version : Cities with the Highest number of Transplants & Transients GYRO March 26th, 2005, 04:01 AM Name the major & medium sized U.S. cities with the highest number transplants and transient people. Wu-Gambino March 26th, 2005, 04:13 AM My guess would be Atlanta, Charlotte, and Phoenix. Lmichigan March 26th, 2005, 04:26 AM I'm pretty sure for a major city it would be Las Vegas. HoustonTexas March 26th, 2005, 04:31 AM Houston/Dallas Skanky the Boricuo March 26th, 2005, 05:06 AM I've never understood why people make opinion polls for questions that have definitive answers. NovaWolverine March 26th, 2005, 05:20 AM Yeah, there has to be definite numbers for this. lammius March 26th, 2005, 07:16 AM New York? Ride the subway out to Queens or interior Brooklyn and see how many people are native New Yorkers. LosAngelesSportsFan March 26th, 2005, 07:22 AM The answer is clearly LA and NY. jmancuso March 26th, 2005, 07:23 AM can only speak for houston but very few people i know around here are actually from this area (or even texas). texasboy March 26th, 2005, 07:25 AM I've never understood why people make opinion polls for questions that have definitive answers. lol. I remember a thread a few weeks ago asking which city had the most black people. but wait, while I am laughing I hope I am not guilty of this. NovaWolverine March 26th, 2005, 10:45 AM Probably LA, NYC, DC, and one of the southern hot towns. Yankee BOY March 26th, 2005, 04:41 PM Id say Atlanta, Miami, and Houston. fredcalif March 26th, 2005, 05:23 PM Phoenix Las VEgas Los Angeles Atlanta jay66 March 26th, 2005, 05:57 PM Las Vegas fargo2nyc March 27th, 2005, 02:34 AM I found this wich ranks city from 1990-2000 http://netscape.homestore.com/Finance/Census/MostPopular.asp?gate=aolnetscape1&poe=homestore I cant find the link but i read some where that NYC had the largest population growth also... not % wise but actual numbers Darrell March 27th, 2005, 04:15 AM I found this wich ranks city from 1990-2000 http://netscape.homestore.com/Finance/Census/MostPopular.asp?gate=aolnetscape1&poe=homestore I cant find the link but i read some where that NYC had the largest population growth also... not % wise but actual numbers There must be a typo. The info on your link states that San Antonio and Austin grew by the exact same amount of people between 1990 and 2000. This is obviously a typo. The correct figure for Austin should be 190,940. SChristopher March 27th, 2005, 07:33 AM I would say places that were smaller some years ago like in the 70's. For instance Atlanta wasnt always as huge as it is now so many of these people had to come from somewhere, the same for other cities like it. As far as transients ... I wouldnt begin to guess... HoustonTexas March 27th, 2005, 07:34 AM Nobody is from Houston anymore... I bet its about a 1 in 4 ratio... Most of the people are from other places in the US, or Another continent. SChristopher March 27th, 2005, 07:53 AM ^ Exactly, cities like that where you ask someone where they are from almost always. In a place like Louisville or say Fresno where the question is rarely the first or second thing asked. SILVERLAKE March 28th, 2005, 11:04 PM No doubt about it. NY and LA! teshadoh March 28th, 2005, 11:12 PM No doubt about it. NY and LA! Actually - I do doubt that, except for total numbers of course. But again - another 'what do you think' question where the answer is irrelevant to actual facts. Some might not be aware of something called, the US CENSUS, but every 10 years they question US residents so kids don't have to ask people which city they think has more transients. So those are my 'opinionated picks' ;) Provided by Dan @ http://www.cyburbia.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14597 (and please, if you are going to visit this site - this isn't the place for "which city has the sexiest people - Houston or Salt Lake City?") LAuniverse April 3rd, 2005, 12:14 PM For transients, its LA. I guarantee it. SkyHigh529 April 4th, 2005, 12:21 AM Well, I'm not sure about the other cities and the statistics for them, but I do know that in the last census, more people from somewhere outside of Georgia now live in Atlanta than those who are from Georgia, if that says anything. chicagogeorge April 4th, 2005, 01:05 AM I say Las Vegas, Atlanta, various parts of Florida, and Phoenix. If you mean transpalnts (and not immigrants), but domestic migrants, the largest cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago actually have had a net domestic migration loss (big losses). http://www.brookings.edu/es/urban/publications/200310_Frey.htm Between 1995-2000 metros that had a net domestic population loss NYC -895,000 Los Angeles area-550,000 Chicagoland- 318,000 DC/Baltimore area- 60,000 The Bay Area- 200,000 Of course, all 5 of these metros gained substantial population by natural increases in birth rates, and the big one, international migration. What is interesting, from 1990 to 2000, 2,000,000 people left California than came in from other states. The major drive in California's ever increasing population today is international migration, unlike decades past when midwest, and east coast transplants were flocking there. Seems like the prime destination for domestic migrants today is the south and southwest.... http://www.ppic.org/content/pubs/CC_800HJCC.pdf http://www.census.gov/prod/2003pubs/censr-9.pdf SChristopher April 7th, 2005, 11:17 PM I find that stat VERY interesting.... CincoRanchHoustonRes April 8th, 2005, 01:52 AM Houston actually has a lot. louisianacharm April 8th, 2005, 08:32 AM definitely LA Atlanta Dallas Vegas Dampyre April 8th, 2005, 05:32 PM definitely LA Atlanta Dallas Vegas Hey, idiot, did you see the list posted from the US Census?? teshadoh April 8th, 2005, 05:41 PM ^ Particularly considering that besides Las Vegas, Miami / W Palm Beach, Washington, Orlando, Tampa, Phoenix, Denver, San Francisco / San Jose & Portland OR all have higher rates. But you were at least nice about it ;) ShuwanCarlton April 8th, 2005, 07:51 PM NY and LA most definitely but I also voted for Miami and SF after factoring in immigration. Most of you probably did the same but maybe some weren't thinking that deeply. dave8721 April 8th, 2005, 08:06 PM I love how everyone chimes with with "LA and NY most definetely" when stats show that as big metros go its Las Vegas and Miami most definitly. fargo2nyc April 8th, 2005, 08:43 PM It just depends on what the OP is talkign about,,,,,,,,,,,, if they are talkign about %'s then it is LV and Phoenix. But if it is actual numbers then it is NYC and LA teshadoh April 8th, 2005, 10:00 PM Seriously, besides Dampyre - I'm the nicest guy you would ever want to know. Anyways, you all don't deserve it - but here are metro areas (based on pre 2000 standards) sorted by total number of inhabitants born out of state. LosAngelesSportsFan April 9th, 2005, 12:04 AM Actually might be 5 out of 6, isnt bakersfield included in the LA numbers sometimes? teshadoh April 9th, 2005, 12:21 AM Actually might be 5 out of 6, isnt bakersfield included in the LA numbers sometimes? Nope, I certainly doubt that. If so - that is some horrifc sprawl going on if that many are commuting from Bakersfield. I suppose San Francisco would be the number two most out of towners - if you include Oakland & San Jose to the mix. But none of this is a big surprise. THough it was a pain to get those numbers out - I am still more interested in ratio growth. djm19 April 9th, 2005, 02:32 AM yeah Bakerfield is often plopped in the LA metro stuff. A metrolink train goes there too. samsonyuen April 9th, 2005, 02:59 PM LA, NY, DC, and Las Vegas (which I forgot to click on for my vote). ShuwanCarlton April 9th, 2005, 05:59 PM Thank You TheBrad for backing up the NY and LA notion. Some people here take this all too seriously. I'm allowed to say which cities I believe have the highest number of transplants, right? I mean the topic is highest number, not percentage, correct? Then someone can come along and post actual numbers to verify or nullify my opinion. Isn't that what this is about? unusualfire April 30th, 2005, 09:29 PM It it just me that i think this is fishy?
