Last Sunday, March 20, I drove around town to some different places to capture the skyline of Augusta.
These are my first photos on a digital camera ever, so tell me what you think. :)

Well, I hope you enjoyed. Next time I set out, I hope to get some from North Augusta, the Hill, and maybe even a panorama.

Forgive me for the size of each photo. If you know how I can do thumbnails, please tell me.
Any feedback is much appreciated. Thank you. :)

nice shots. I doubt MCG has ever had that much construction at the same time before. It will be nice if they can figure out how to put some green space in there.

I hope downtown will eventually catch on. Columbia County (Gwinnett East) seems to be a major drain on the city.

Very nice photos. I like the residential tower with all the peaks.

Thanks. :)

@Buckley: Yeah, Columbia County is really booming right now in business.
There are commercial construction sites galore.

@James: That's Riverplace Condominiums, or Port Royal Apartments, the tallest building in Augusta.
I'll get some close-ups next time.

I agree. Its such a lovely downtown I think its a shame there's not more happening down there.

^I could swear I heard somewhere that some sort of 20 story tower is planned for downtown, though I can't find it now.
Oh well . . . thanks for the feedback.

Yep. There are plans for a new judicial center. I heard they were talking about a 20 storey tower, but that was a while ago.

Great shots, some of the best I've ever seen of Augusta. It's such a great city. I love it to death.

Very nice photos :okay: One suggestion: keep the size smaller... Maybe something around 640X480, which is ideal for most screens. Your digital camera must have included an application you can install to assist you in that. Not that it bothers me, but some forumers may get too lazy to scroll :) Keep up the good work and thanks for posting your photos here.

^^Is there some sort of way to just display them as thumbnails? Reducing an image's size (thus quality) has always felt like rape to me. I'd much rather not rape my images. Anyone have a solution?

Oh yeah, it isn't my digital camera. It's my dad's. :|

MattSal, you can post them at a smaller size and link the smaller image to a larger one, so people can click and get the ful effect. You don't have to make your photos too small. I have found that a 640x480 image is just as nice, especially if you are working with a 3MP camera, or less. Of course, it is YOUR property and you can do as you please, but keep in mind that some people, like myself, are still working with a dial-up connection (at home). It would be a shame to miss nice photos, especially from an area under-represented. One way or another I will click and view your future photos :)

You ain't seen nothing yet. I might set out on Masters week to the Lamar Building.
On this one week in the year, the 18th floor balcony is open to public.
Here is the only photo I could find on the internet from up there . . .

Though I may be in Atlanta all of next week, I will still have photos to share anyways.

Augusta is a pretty big city. It is the second largest city and metro in Georgia.
The city has a population of 199,775, and a metro population of 477,441.

UPDATE: Sorry guys, I'll be away from town spring break. I'm going down to South Georgia. However, I can pretty much promise you some pictures of Brunswick, Savannah, maybe Jacksonville, the Okeefenokee, and Douglas/Waycross. I still might go to the Lamar Building, though it seems it might rain a lot next week.

We'll see what happens.

actually, augusta city (richmond county) is pretty stagnant if not loosing population to columbia county. current estimates put augusta at 197,000, but the metro at 515,000. columbia and aiken counties are growing at very large rates while richmond county needs a little jump start.

Alright, I know I promised a lot of things, but this is all I could come up with.

Last weekend, I had to go Downtown to the Civic Center to attend my brother's graduation.
So, I took advantage of the situation and snapped several photos.
This time, they will be in thumbnail format, for easier viewing.

Nice Images I am suprised I havent seen many of these! I dont think Thomson can really be considered a suburb of Augusta yet...an exurban town in the metro area.. yes, but not a suburb. Give it about 5-7 years and with the way Grovetown and Evans is growing and it probably will be a suburb.
I really like the way you can see Downtown and the Medical District from the Calhoun Expressway. Makes you feel like your in a bigger city than you really are, although Augusta is not that small anymore.
Im hoping for a third skyline to start on Walton Way just below The Bon-Aire and Patridge Inn. A Couple of Midrise-Highrise Condos would be nice there...but wishful thinking only!

Ellatur, probably the best looking Church in Augusta is Sacred heart. It is actually a Cultural center now. There are some other gorgeous churchs in the Summerville area. http://www.cloudjungle.dns2go.com/DotNetNuke/Portals/2d08a043-afde-48be-af3a-daae20f90696/Gallery/Augusta%20Ga.%20images/Sacred%20Heart%20(Small).JPG

I'd much rather they just build in the downtown area. The turndown of the new Judicial Center was a big upset.
I'm looking forward to the development of Evans as a new smaller downtown. A few lowrises would be nice there.

Funny, I just said the same thing over in my thread. I agree with you though, I think Evans will get a new midrise before DT Augusta will....they want to become like Buckhead in Atlanta, from what I was reading in ColaCo. mag. Or even West Augusta where they already have lots of lowrise-midrises around Doctors Hospital and the Old Navy shopping center.

Just discovered the new set of photos you (MattSal) posted. Excellent work, to say the least :okay: By the way, I was looking at your first photos in this thread and I couldn't help reflecting on what another forumer (Matthew) said about the stinkin' wires that get on your way every time you try to take the ideal skyline photo. Images 4 and 5 are great examples of that.

Enjoy.

I'll try to set out again before summer's end, and this time including the Civic Center, Riverwalk, and Riverplace Condominiums.

Thanks for the shots! If you're interested, be sure to check out the Augusta forum over at urbanplanet.... It's surprisingly becoming decently active, and we'd love to have your contributions over there as well...

Re: Walton Way development around Bonaire...

As a graduate of Richmond Academy (officially The Academy Of Richmond County), I think that area of Walton Way needs to be cleaned up quite a bit before I'd live there. The area behind ARC (Russell St., Heard Ave., etc.) is okay, but the other side of Walton Way I wouldn't live on.

One problem I see in DT Augusta is density. We have one road, Broad Street, that has Wachovia, Lamar, Marion, Suntrust and the Ramada (five of Augusta's highrises, all in a row except the Ramada). Then Reynolds St. has the Marriott and Fort Discovery/condo tower. The only other significant buildings in height: Greene St. has the municipal building (the ugly Marble Palace) and St. John's Tower, and Telfair St. has the Maxwell Apartments (I still wonder who lives there).

The rest of downtown is low- and medium-rise buildings. Kind of like an overgrown small town and like every other Georgia city except Atlanta.

I thought Thomson was closer to Macon. It is covered in our news.
Maybe you're thinking of Thomaston. Thomson is in McDuffie Co., near Augusta, and Thomaston is in Upson Co., near Macon.

:)

I might look into that. Thanks for the comment.

Nice shots of Augusta! I have no idea where Sector 7G is located, though, I really like their sign. It could become our new city slogan, "Augusta: Dance at your own risk." Also, I agree with Yakirz, I love Russell and Heard Avenues (actually like to live there one day), and Hickman is pretty cool even after you cross over Walton, but anymore across Walton Way and you're getting too close to Harrisburg, which sucks. I keep waiting for that neighborhood to change, but it never does.

Sector 7G isn't anything impressive. Bands play there often, but it is mostly an emo/scene club. It looks on the outside like absolute shit, it was converted from like an old dry cleaner.

I think it's on Reynolds Street.
