I try to find beautiful palace on today's Ukraine built by polish baron Rzewuski or Szczesny (I can't remember). Mariinsky Dvorets (Mariinsky Palace), 1750-1755. Named in honor of Tsar Alexander II's wife, the Empress Maria. This beautiful blue- and cream-colored palace is similar in style to the imperial summer estates in St. Petersburg. This building was designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli, Empress Elizabeth's favorite architect, and built under the direction of Moscow architect Ivan Michurin. It's a lovely mixture of Ukrainian and Russian Baroque. Before the 1917 Revolution, the palace was used as residence for visiting members of the imperial family. Today, the building is used for official state functions and is closed to the public. 5 Hrushevsky Street. Trolley bus #20 to Mariinsky Park and then walk past the Supreme Rada (Parliament) Building. Thanks! coth March 31st, 2005, 03:50 PM Fantastic pictures. How big is city center in Kiev? It looks excellent. Even better than in Moscow. Is it posted in World Forum? Such excellent pictures just must be posted there (Historical center and Crimea). Modern Kiev looks interesting, but not so developed as center. But that's a problem for all soviet and north cities... good work phil, btw. doc March 31st, 2005, 06:48 PM "Even better than in Moscow" Evrybody always liked S.Pete, Kyiv in former USSR more than Moscow. It's not going to change any time soon. But that a pretty usual thing. Wawa not the most likibale city in Poland (but hey, try to tall this to Warsowian :) IMHO always better say former soviet cities :) Petr March 31st, 2005, 07:50 PM Like my friends koniaczeq and Delfin said in not very diplomatic words ;), old Kiev architecture looks imposing, but the new one is average (including train station), and some shown buldings aren't even average. I suppose that You've presented "all the best" so in ukrainian capital there is lack of modern architecture on the highest level like in Warsaw in the early '90s. I hope it will change soon (in Moscow it is changing now). Wawa not the most likibale city in Poland (but hey, try to tall this to Warsowian :) This example is quite disputable. ;) doc March 31st, 2005, 07:53 PM "in Moscow it is changing now" i am glad you one of few who noticed BTW why my example is diputable? Petr March 31st, 2005, 08:16 PM "in Moscow it is changing now" i am glad you one of few who noticed BTW why my example is diputable? Because it depends on what You like. In comparison with Warsaw other polish cities are quite small. When You're in Warsaw You feel this size difference. For example I like Cracow, but I can't, say I would prefer it than Warsaw. Of course If You like sightseeing and old (gothic or reinnesance) achitecture You would prefer Coracow, Gdansk or Wroclaw, but if you like mixture of old and new, and big city atmosphere (like in London for example) you would love Warsaw. We have much things to do to make Warsaw look in some distritcts like London, but the good thing is, changes are getting faster year by year. You should also remember that most of the piscuter in the Internet show Old Town and Skyscrapers, but between them is located most of the Center District, when there were huge changes in the last few years. doc March 31st, 2005, 08:22 PM OK like i said "(but hey, try to tall this to Warsowian :) Petr March 31st, 2005, 09:12 PM OK like i said "(but hey, try to tall this to Warsowian :) lol your personal opinion vs my personal opinion You will say I'm biased, but a lot of foreigners, who had visited Warsaw and other polish cities, had the same opinion. Seeing photos it's not everything. Let's stop offtopic. :) doc March 31st, 2005, 09:18 PM No problem Sergei April 2nd, 2005, 07:19 AM Just wanted to mention, Petr, I didn't pick the best photos of modern buildings in Kiev, as you mentioned. I simply posted all the photos I found from this one photographer. VelesHomais April 5th, 2005, 06:49 AM Interesting pictures. I must say that I share the view of those criticizing the "modern" Kyiv. In fact, real Kyivians ( when I say real Kyivians, I mean those who are at least 3rd generation Kyivians, because there are many newcomers/migrants who have a different opinion ) criticize the new "modern" constructions much more harshly than people did here. Actually Kyivans are so conservative in terms of architecture, that Kyiv has the possibly largest in the world construction of residential areas resembling 19th century neoclassicism. Entire new streets which look as if they were constructed in 1880's. And I personally share the same taste. coth, by city centre I assume you mean the "old" districts. Unfortunately, they are mixed with commieblocks, mostly hrushevki ( which make up 15% of Kyiv's buildings and are planned to be demolished by new experimental program recently adopted ). However, about half of the right bank Kyiv is made up of such districts. That would be about 35% of Kyiv. Which is very large. There is no single "old" district, but at least 3. Downtown-Lipky, Podil and Andrijivskyj Uzviz area. doc, really? That's interesting to know. Because opinions on whether Moscow or St.Petersburg resemble Kyiv more are always divided 50% by 50%, at least in my personal experience. Then there's an alternative opinion that St.Petersburg resembles Odessa and Moscow Kharkiv. Sergei April 17th, 2005, 07:27 AM BUMP!
