8/10 for the downtown area.

I thought John Hancock Tower was the landmark.

That's in Chicago.

TheWeinbot
January 27th, 2003, 03:54 AM
No. The John Hancock Tower is Boston's 790 foot glass monolith. You're thinking of the John Hancock Center in Chicago.

As for it's status as Boston's landmark- it is one. However, it isn't in downtown, but in a seperate business district called Back Bay. Our larger, financial distric skyline, does really have any building that sticks out in height, so that area has no landmark.

For a city of its significance, I find the Boston skyline to be extremely underwhelming. Hancock is one of the finest buildings of the 70's... but besides that... it's a very short and boxy skyline. I heard Boston is building a new tall building though. 6/10

The third, sixth, seventh, and last photo says it all to me. All northeastern cities have the waterfront charm, but Boston stands out. It's a nice variety and good denisty right next to the water. Im sure that on somedays the sunset shimmering off the bay and the light reflecting off the smooth glass of the skyscrapers is breathtaking. My only complaint is that it's seems somewhat scattered. Why are the two tallest a mile or two away from the CBD? They just look out of place, and it's just less pleasing to look at. Anyway, 8/10.

BiggySmalls
April 26th, 2003, 09:54 PM
Oh, I really dont like the second tallest, or the one next to the Hancock. It's outdated and just plain boring. A gray and black box with a gray and black platform atop make a skyscraper attractive not. And, did you know that during the initial construction of the Hancock, strong gusts of wind dislodged the window panes and fell to the ground below? Yeah, pretty dangerous stuff.

The South Station Tower which would be 850 ft. tall was proposed, but no final decision has been made that I know of...South Station is by the financial district, so it may add that "Landmark" skyscraper that we need and deserve.

We need a tall slim landmark tower in the middle of downtown, though I'm pleased that the new Leonard Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge will help give Boston a unique landmark (regionally at first) to its downtown core.

It isnt bad. I love the older architecture. But it looks very dated, has way too many boxes and too much brown and grey concrete in the skyline for my liking. Would look great with a few more modern shiny things in there. Not enough height either & it also appears disjointed. Awesome city on street level though.

As a local Bostonian, I voted "8"
A little too much brick, a little too much boxiness, but that is finally changing. Bostonians old and new are understanding that reddish-brown and boxy is exhausted.
But, there are many "odd" buildings in Boston (Pru, Hancock, One International, the "Pregnant" Building, 125 High, 111 Huntington...) if they were spread out like in Atlanta, the skyline would be strikingly original.
As for the Pru and Hancock being a mile from the CBD, they are separated by the Boston Common and Public Gardens, and the turnpike and railways keep the CBD from expanding naturally in a southwestern direction. That's why they built the whole NEW CBD a mile to the west of the 19th century CBD where the current Pru and Hancock stand.
As for there being no "landmark" or "inspiring" supertalls in Boston, they are ILLEGAL, because Logan International Airport is about a mile and a half from the CBD.

Boston skyscraper trivia:
the Prudential Tower was the largest in the world outside of NYC when it was built
the Hancock Tower was in danger of falling over edge-wise when it was built. The inside structure was re-built and a rolling counterweight was installed one of the top floors.
the Old Hancock Tower was the tallest building constructed in North America during the 1940s.
Mayor Menino forced the architects to put the crown atop 111 Huntington which was not in the original design because he was tired of flat-topped buildings (a good sign of future design in Boston).

service lift attendant: there is no law against tall buildings in boston. The FAA reviews buildings but will allow 700 feet in the financial district at south station, right in the take off path from logan. taller buildings could probably get FAA approval in other places. the main reason boston has no supertalls is that the citizens (NIMBYs) don't want to overshadow all of the older, shorter, architecturally significant builidings in the city. Still boston has more 500 footers than atlanta, philly, miami, seattle, and frankfurt just to name a few.

This city, besides its skyscrapers, has a very old style charm. Many of the buildings are in the style of the late 19th century to early 20th century American architecture which I like a lot. The Prudential Tower has really good architecture and the top of the building next to it is really neat if you see it up close. This city has it all. I give it a 9/10.

For me Boston has one of the best skylines in the US. It has the element of history and character in the skyline which can't be matched anywhere else in North America. There is a certain sophistication and elegance about the Boston skyline which you don't see in Chicago or Los Angeles, for example. It's certainly not the biggest skyline in height terms or building density- but the buildings have character and charm- that's why I've given it 9/10.

Even without the propsed renderings the city looks awesome and really really big. I love cities that have 2 downtowns of skysprapers like NY and LA, and Boston is right on the ocean too. Sometimes statistics are hard to believe because it looks bigger than San Fransisco and DC.

But oh no, there's like a few boxy buildings. How tragic.

This is one of the worst polls I have ever seen. How can the majority of voters give a city like Boston 3 or less??!! It should get at the very least a 5 just because it's Boston! I admit the skyline isn't the best, but it's better than San Francisco, Minneapolis (debatable), St. Louis.... The density of the skyline is great, and I like the fact that there is more than one high rise district. I give the city as a whole a 10, and the skyline an 8.5. There is definitely room for improvement, and when we do get that 1,000 footer (hopefully Winthro Sq.!!!!), it will make the city all the more amazing.

I don't think Boston needs a 1000' tower necessarily. Like Hartford, the density of the skyline speaks for itself. Some cities benefit from super-tall skyscrapers, but I don't think Boston is one of these because I think (and this just my "humble" opinion) that taller buildings detract from the beautifully historic natural of the core. In a sense, no offense, Philadelphia fails in this regard. IMHO Philadelphia would be a more attractive city with more buildings less tall.

Anyone who gives Boston less than a 7 hasn't spent any time in the city - flying into Logan Airport alone is testiment to the fact that Boston is incredible.

^I have actually always found that appealing and distinct about the skyline, but there are 2 megatowers proposed for the financial district. If this occurs, the tallest towers will be in the financial district once again.

Never been impressed by Boston's skyline...just seems a little bland.

I honestly cant stand this craze with people not liking a skyline because it "bland". Bland or not its impressive..honestly, NewYork is bland...Toronto is Bland..so what. Years from now post modern buildings will be considered bland.

i give it a 8/10
IMO it would be nicer of the tallest towers were in the main cluster as signature towers.

Exactly!

I love nice pointless spired buildings that use 1200 ft to acheive 70 floors as much as the next guy, but those tragically boxy buildings look even more amazing at the ground level than the spired ones. And also, if you had to choose a skyline made up of either only spires or only boxes, which one would make more sense?

Here's what the skyline might look like in a few years...the building on the left is approved, the other is proposed (hopefully it'll get approved soon).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v633/tmac9wr/NewSkyline.jpg

Adds some great diversity to the height downtown.

The tower on the left is 680ft. (I think)

The taller is 1,087 to the roof, ~1,100 to the glass, and 1,270ft to the tip of the spire.

the other tall one in the city is the one with the spire, the Prudential center.

Some recent aerials of Boston (not taken by me). It is hard to show the Boston skyline in one photo since it covers a lot of area, has several highrise districts, and the large Charles River Lagoon is in the middle between DT Boston and Cambridge.

Boston is going through a boom right now. There are 6 towers starting construction, all well over 100m, with South Station Tower being the tallest at 203m. Compared to Vegas, NYC, London and Dubai, it's not much. For Boston, it is huge! The look of cranes along the skyline will be a great sight! And as soon as they start, I'll make sure I take pics.

I gave Boston a "7" which was almost painful to do. I love Boston and with the history, culture, and cleanliness, I would give it a "10" for being a city. But as skyscrapers go, it's not that impressive. But that's not a bad thing, Boston is one of the few cities that can get away with not having many tall buildings because the main draw to the city is its charm, not its flashiness. And high rises would detract from the pockets of neighbourhoods in the CBD. As far as the skyline, there are too many look-a-like boxes in the financial district. I think that John Hancock is one of the best 70's boxes out there and has a tasteful colour. Prudential has aged terribly, and before visiting Boston I hated the looks of it. However, after visitng the city, I gained some compassion for it. It's recognisable and IMO represents Boston as a whole; tough, hearty, and independent. It's one of my favourite American cities

I've always liked Bostons Skyline as it was the first city with proper skyscrapers that I saw when I was a kid. I remember standing at the base of Hancock Place and thinking wow this is amazing. The views from the top were incredible. That was 12 years ago and I've loved skyscrapers since. It's a shame the OB deck is closed to the public I'd love to go back up.
The skyline could do with a few buildings of a similar height to Hancock Place and the Prudential Building and maybe an even taller one to act as a pinnacle. At the moment Im going to give it an 8/10. It has a lovely setting with the river etc but it could do with some taller buildings.

What`s the big fascination with spires?

A spire has no function other than to touch the sky and, with it, the heart.
It is, in the simplest sense, a form of visual punctuation, marking the end of a skyscraper's climb as exultantly as an exclamation point ends a sentence. Poets of steel and stone call it an architectural transition from earth to heaven, from profane to sacred, from humdrum reality to glorious spirituality.
Done right, a spire makes its leap so deftly and so inevitably that a skyscraper would seem incomplete without it. Done wrong, it's a clunky afterword, an unnecessary bit of embroidery, a vainglorious flagpole that's simply trying to set a record.

While often overlooked as a "short, squat" skyline, Boston actually is very impressive up close. There is a dense cluster of 400-600 footers, with a whopping 16 buildings 500+ feet, including the 790 foot glass monolith John Hancock Tower, and the 750 foot Prudential Tower that was the tallest in the world outside of NYC when built. (for those international forum'ers, 18 buildings over 150 meters including a tallest of 241 meters)

There are some very exciting projects in the pipeline, though it is yet to be seen how many will actually come to fruition. I'm giving the city a 9.5 due to the insane density of the area and the way you feel like you are being enveloped by the city coming in from the North or South.

Here are a few recent pictures taken by me.

Beautiful city, was there about a month ago. Skyline's kind of scattered though so I gave it a 7.5/10. About 3 or 4 different "skylines" as you can see from the pano I took from Harvard Bridge; from left there's Cambridge, the Financial District, and Back Bay.
