@bv3: if you get :redx: :redx:, it's usually a good idea to do a little homework: click on the :redx:, choose Properties, highlight the URL & copy it with another click, delete what's on top & paste the address in. Enter. That'll show you the picture, which will also show in the thread when you go Back. :)

This method works in many cases, and it sure is worth the little extra effort here! :cool:

What struck me the most about the 1971 picture: the Embarcadero Freeway! :D I must say I'm glad it's gone. :banana:

O, but it if you did call it the San Anselmo Bridge, it would be pretty interesting that people from different parts of the Bay Area call the bridges different names, O well. So where did San Anselmo Bridge come from? Is that a real bridge in the Bay Area?

I must've mixed it up with the San Mateo Bridge. The Richmond Bridge connects Richmond and San Rafael, and San Anselmo is like a siamese twin of San Rafael (the same street crosses city borders like four times in some areas. Crazy :runaway: ). That's why I messed up.

I don't think I've ever posted this picture of San Francisco yet here in this thread, but it's one of my favorite pictures of the San Francisco Skyline.

I am truly grateful that the Palace of Fine Arts survived. :) But it's sad to see that the other buildings, some of them so whimsical and fantastically ornate, have vanished. :(

Thanks for posting those wondeful pics. I believe the reason why those buildings didn't survive is because those buildings were designed to be temporary. I remember seeing a display about them at the Exploratorium as they restored the Fine Arts Palace. Most of the fantastic and whimsical buildings were actually just built of wood and plaster and not of any permanent material. In fact, because the muses on the Palace of Fine Arts were carved from wood, all of them had deteriorated to a point where they were barely recognizable as muses at close range. I believe they are putting new resin or fiberglass muses to replace the original ones.

True, I'm sure many of the buildings erected for the Panama-Pacific Exposition long ago weren't meant to last. And, to tell you the truth, in some cases (e. g. Maryland, North Dakota) I'm not exactly crushed that they didn't. ;) On the other hand, I wouldn't have minded keeping the Fountain of Ceres around.

But San Francisco is fortunate to still have the Palace of Fine Arts and should go to some lengths to preserve it. :cool: I'm currently working on a photo thread which will be short on narrative & show a melange of pix from at least 2 photographers.

So some of the Palace's original statuary is decaying? After close to 100 years of sea air and salty breezes and fog so close to the water, that's hardly surprising. Maybeck (Bernard M, the architect of the Palace) actually believed in building things so they'd last. I heard he was the first to introduce industrial sash windows (both at the First Church of Christ Scientist, which occupies a special category in the National Register of Historic Places, and several of the homes in North Berkeley). Solid iron! Thick, solid glass!

I'll be elated if the City and County of San Francisco manages to keep the p[a]lace up, although I suspect space rental can't quite pay for the maintenance.

What we see today at the Palace of Fine Arts is a concrete shaped from casts of the original plaster Palace of the PPIE.

The restoration has 3 parts.
The first part is finished... restoration of elements and leaky roof of the dome. This includes replacement of the wooden muses. The muses are on continuing display at the Exploratorium (at least they were there last August). The muses looked like weatherworn driftwood.

Part 2 is consists of a seismic retrofit and the restoration of the lagoon.

Part 3 is the restoration of the building surrounding the rotunda (where the Exploratorium is currently housed).

Designed by Bernard Maybeck and built in 1915 as part of the Panama Pacific International Exposition, the Palace of Fine Arts is the sole structure to remain. The original Palace and its grounds, built of plaster and expected to last several years at most, stood for over thirty five years. Deterioration over time occurred, and attempts to preserve the structure failed. A reconstruction effort occurred between 1964 and 1972. For cost reasons, the entire 1915 scheme was not executed, and the architectural and plating elements surrounding all elevations of the Main Building were not built. For more information on the history, visit www.maybeck.org.

What stands today are concrete and steel elements, made from casts of the original structure, therefore reflecting the true Maybeck design in architectural form. The lagoon shape is also true to the original design. The site has been designated as San Francisco Landmark No. 88 in 1977, and through the efforts of the Maybeck Foundation, is currently being nominated to The National Register of Historic Places. The Campaign to Restore the Palace of Fine Arts is being led by the Maybeck Foundation. The reason why they were demolished, as I'm sure you know, is that they were built of plaster. Later, the Palace of Fine Arts dome was rebuilt with concrete.

I noticed that some filipino love to wear rock and punk fashion, I have several filipino friend that are skateboard appeal and hip hop fashion. Some people thought that filipino are from ghetto area. :sleepy: That's totally bullshit. Most Filipino has well educated.

Sutter Street. More specifically, the sun is shining on the north side of the block of Sutter Street between Montgomery and Sansome Streets. At the top of the picture is 44 Montgomery (565-43-1966), on the bottom right is Citicorp Center (551-39-1984), and the bottom left tower is the Charles Schwab world headquarters at 101 Montgomery Street (404-28-1983). I don't know what the middle building is called.

^^From what I heard in the news, the last time it snowed in San Francisco was during the 70s.

Events like this is why I love San Francisco. It was estimated that 15,000 attended the event. If they do this next year during the weekend, it will certainly have a bigger crowd and I will be there.

Downtown and the rich areas in the higher elevations that surprise newcomers who think Oakland is just boyz'n the hood and nothing else...and lots of the people in these areas have more familiarity with Berkeley and SF then with their own city(even after several years in some cases)..LOL

I'd say west Oakland and the area before entering San Landro, also some parts of the fruitvale are a bit dangerous.

Castro Valley is about in the center and the flatlands are areas of East Oakland, San Leandro and Hayward.

I went to Fanime for the first time this year with some of my friends and I don't even watch anime. They're telling me I should go next year, but I'm not sure, I kinda want to go since I had fun this year. It looks like you stayed at the Marriott, my friends and I stayed at the Crowne Plaza across the street. I didn't take pictures at the Convention Center. Most of the pictures I took were on downtown San Jose.

No, actually I haven't been! I just swiped the pics from several sites. I don't like anime or yaoi, but I like hentai and video games(I understand that one or the other has either/or). I think I might go next year if I can find someone to come along.

Hentai!!! LOL!!! They were showing hentai and yaoi films there at night! My friends were trying to get in, but they didnt have any proof that they were 18. LOL. The whole place was open all day! Some of my friends stayed up the whole day. :scouserd: There were showings anime and asian movies all night and the arcade was open all day long. It was awesome. I think next year will be bigger.

Hehe, yeah one time I was in DT Dallas on a weekend and I started noticing all sorts of people wearing those anime costumes and walking around and eating at cafes. Apparently there was some convention in town. Anyways, they looked much the same as the kids pictured here, but it was just a little bit funnier to see them outside walking near adults and bums ;)

Thanks for posting! Alameda is a great town. Some of the best views in the Bay Area can be found there. Personally, I like the 16th hole at Monarch Bay - You can see the SF skyline, the bay, and planes landing at OAK.

I didn't know that Alameda was an island until I saw the thread title. I thought is was a town in the foothills or something. Alameda looks nice; it looks like a small-town version of San Francisco with those Victorian houses.

I didn't know that there are beaches on the San Francisco Bay. Then again, I should've expected it, since there are technically beaches on the Delaware Bay out here. Actually, the beaches on the Delaware Bay look a lot like the beaches in Alameda; the color of the sand is similar and the plant life seems similar.

You and me both, but the bad thing is I visited enough times where I should have known. Since I have a quite a few relatives living there its almost like a 2nd home, and I'm just learning this.

BTW these were taken toward the end of the day when many businesses was closing. I suspect this district is much busier in the middle of the day than what I caught.

Unseen places of Oakland. I don't know much Oakland or the East Bay. Personally, I was expecting your pics more gritty or gansta but it proved me wrong. Don't see much foot traffic though.

I've been checking this thread since the first post but haven't responded until now. It's good stuff, and I say that because I've seen a lot of Oakland. It's far more than the bullet-ridden ghetto that the Chronicle wants us to believe (and which America unfortunately does).

P.S. It's a shame that you had to get a Beckham bitch to taint your photo set ;). As a Quakes fan, that makes me gag.

It's a heavy package and probably over 1 minute with DSL speed. However, sometimes the image host has several issues and it's slower than normal.

The Picutres were great. It is so different from what we hear about that area.

Oakland is really a nice place, and not so much of the complete ghetto-ness. There are a lot of places in which Oakland does not have crime/the ghetto. Beautiful places, Lake Merritt, Jack London. Oakland likes to keep their history, and not repeat other cities. Oakland has a huge potential to become a bigger city also. Such as Autorow having potential to be the next bay area retail hub, West Oakland - Army Basy having potential to become a good waterfront/retail hub as well. Many projects are coming up, and some are already in the process of completion. Kaiser Project, Lake Merritt Project, 601 City Center, 1100 Broadway, etc. I really love Oakland, and actually it's not bad walking around at night where I walk to, and from. So far so good. Anyways I'll post up some pictures of Oakland once I have the opportunity to. :lol:

Wait...I thought San Jose their own soccer stadium to host the Earthquakes.

They play at the Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, California for now. They are in talks with the city of San Jose to build a 22,000 (Option to increase to 30,000) seats for a stadium.

I loved the pictures. Occasionally I check the Oakland entry on Wikipedia hoping to see pictures that show the nicer side of the city, but I always end up disappointed. Your pictures truly make justice to Lake Merritt/Downtown/Jack London Square.

I seriously blame the media, and all the people that hate Oakland for a passion, or just wants to ruin Oakland's image some more. :[

Driving, I'd say about 45 minutes, depending on traffic.

Public transit (Caltrain or BART) can take between an hour to 1.5 hours.

I personally love living here in Oakland. The city is nice, people are friendly, great weather. I live near Lake Merritt where I can walk the dog everyday, I am close to Kaiser and downtown.

Great thread .... except for one thing ...... FOR ME - 2/3 of th photos don't load, even after multiple refresh.
