If SF isn't impressive, why would Maxis put San Francisco in every Simcity game?
EA, the maker of the Sim-series of games, is based in Redwood City, which is very close to San Francisco.

The area around San Francisco is home to many high-tech companies.

Very true. But I also think that San Francisco has a nice location and setting, combined with an attractive skyline is perfect for Simcity :)

Anyway, just wanna make a point that SF deserves to be among the best in North America.

nyc and chi-town are definately 1 and 2 .but even more obvious is that #3 toronto is better than the rest. the top 3 is going to remain for a long time.

I don't think number three is obvious. I go back and forth on it myself. Sometimes I think its LA, sometimes San Fran, sometimes T-Dot, sometimes Seattle etc. If you put high priority on the high rises (not tall scrapers) outside of the CBD in Toronto then it most likely is Toronto.
It really depends on the views and photos you see for all those number there canidates though.

Almost no matter what the shot of New York or Chicago though it is pretty clear that they are number one or two. You can't say that about any shot from those other cities.

New York, in my opinion, is in a league of its own. Chicago is clearly number 2, but by a very long distance because it has only a small number of old skyscrapers in comparison with NY.

Pittsburgn shows that you can have a GREAT skyline without supertalls or without a ton of tall buildings. It provides a great skyline all with good placement, variety, location, and scenary. I would call it the best little skyline in the world.

I think high-rise condominiums is becoming a trend in major Canadian cities not just Toronto but Vancouver as well. It's also the same with US cities as well like Chicago or Miami.

hkskyline
April 11th, 2006, 04:43 PM
The Toronto and Vancouver examples are urban rejuvenation projects. False Creek in Vancouver and the disused railyards in Toronto were prime sites that were left unused. These two are by far the largest redevelopment projects in Canada in recent memory. Other cities have more piecemeal projects - a skyscraper here and there.

Seattle does have a nice backdrop. In fact I like the city's natural settings. But it's skyline lack height and density compared to other cities like Atlanta or even Houston.

Ok, Seattle has a few scrapers over 700 ft. But the rest of the city's scrapers aren't that tall.

Also, Seattle's Bank of America is probably the best looking building on the west coast.

Anyway, Atlanta is not dense but does have some really tall buildings. And The BA building in Seattle is impressive though I find The US Bank Tower in Los Angeles the best looking building in this part of the coast.

I think the title should go to New York. Even if Chicago has the tallest building in the continent or is the birthplace of the skyscraper, it can't match the quality and density that New York has. With or without the WTC, NY is still no.1 in North America.

spyguy

I don't think that's necessarily true. Chicago's placement on Lake Michigan as well as what many would consider the most organized major skyline in NA (if not the world) make it quite unique.

Chicago's skyline is organized. But there are other cities that are like that like Toronto, San Diego, Miami or even San Francisco. The only difference is, Chicago's skyline is taller and denser compared to these cities.

hkskyline

Most cities in the world have organized downtowns where the main skyline is located. Even for cities that are typically lowrise, such as London and Paris, there are particular areas where tall buildings are grouped together. For New York, there's Manhattan. For Chicago, there's the Loop. For Vancouver, the scatter is wider, but still organized.

Paddington

A very uniform and new skyline, with plenty of recent additions covered with glass! Sure, there aren't many big tall buildings, but the uniformity in height is quite pleasing to the eye.

Toronto's is nice. But the CN Tower is so dark at night. They need to light it up or something. I think NYC has the best skyline. It's huge, it has great architecture, and the skyline's not lit up too much or too little.

EtherealMist

1. NYC (Sheer size and density)
2. Chicago (Great layout, Height, Photogenic)
3. Toronto (Height, layout)
4. San Francisco (Natural setting)

I dont understand these arguments against NYC. Overkill? How can a skyline be overkill? the more massive a skyline is the more different vantage points it has. You can take thousands of photos of NYC that will all look different simply because its so huge. You can spend all day photographing midtown and not even get to lower Manhattan.

And people knock NYC it because it doesnt have enough varying height but people on the same hand praise Vancouver for having uniform height.

NYC is just on another level in terms of density and amount of skyscrapers I dont know how it cant be #1.

BTW does anyone have that pano of NYC that shows nearly the whole city with Brookyln in the foreground? That pic is amazing.

I love all of these skylines, they all have their own unique draw to them.

1.) New York City (density and juxtoposition of the old and the new)

2.) Chicago (its unique modern qualities and attractive qualities)

3.) Toronto (complete balance, density and it doesn't go way overboard)

Very true. Though Toronto in a way has a bit of a NY feel to it especially the tower blocks.

While some movies have used Toronto as a substitute for New York, Toronto's skyscraper canyons are far smaller than New York, and the city is a lot less dense. Downtown Toronto can't even compete against Midtown Manhattan size-wise and scale-wise. Toronto doesn't have the historic architecture that New York has at the skyscraper level. Many of the towers making up the skyline just came up in the past 40 years.

True about Toronto's size but compared to other US cities except Chicago, it's still denser.

I recently watched 50 Cent's movie Get Rich Or Die Trying. The movie was set in NY but when I saw the Scotia Plaza in the background, oh man I have to say it was shot in T-Dot!

Toronto may look dense from the downtown vantage points, but it is actually quite spread out beyond its downtown core, with clusters of tall residentials at major nodal intersections, which are about 2km spaced out from each direction.

The film industry in Toronto is actually slowing as the Canadian Dollar has appreciated and there is more competition from other cities such as Vancouver and Montreal. It is less likely to see Toronto as a New York substitute these days.

Toronto is Canada's financial centre and largest city, hence I won't compare it to the secondary cities in the US.

I think Downtown Manhattan is the best skyline in the world, even better than Midtown Manhattan which I would consider to be the second best skyline in North American and the world. Just the diversity of Downtown Manhattan I haven't seen in any other skyline in the world. As Spooky says, no other skyline has buildings that span 100 years. From classic skyscrapers like the Trump Building to futuristic ones like the Freedom Tower. Plus, I like the way it is laid out, its density, and how it overlooks New York Harbor!

Yes, they do. There are a number of them scattered around in the Loop. I'll try to dig some up later and post them in the next part of my Chicago photo series.

Yes, I guess they do but they don't have anything like the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, 40 Wall St., Woolworth, etc. which give NYC an edge. No other city in the world has something like that. Just NYC's skyline is much more diverse than any other I've seen. Hong Kong's skyline is way too modern. Chicago does not have a good balance between classic and modern like NYC does. Chicago's post-modern architecture is better. I think many believe Chicago to have a better skyline than NYC because each building in Chicago has its own identity and has its own beauty. But NYC has a certain level of grandeur with ESB, Chrysler, etc. that Chicago doesn't.

Yup. We had a height limit during the era of ESB and Chrysler, so that's unfortunate, but there's still plenty to be enjoyed.

That's because LA has some nice geographical settings like mountains, etc plus it has The US Bank Tower. I don't think LA would have that nice skyline if it didn't have the US Bank.

Houston has some nice skyscraper especially the cathedral one. It's tallest building doesn't impress me that much even if it was design by I.M. Pei. On the other hand, Houston had a proposed supertall which resembled Philadelphia's tallest. It had a nice design but the project never pushed through.

Westsidelife

I agree with you that the presence of the mountains really enhances LA's skyline. But even without the mountains, LA would still have a better skyline than Houston. Like I said before, Houston's skyline is VERY, VERY bland where as LA's skyline is denser, has more personality, and is more diverse in terms of shapes, colors, and designs.

Houston DOES have more tall buildings...but Los Angeles is denser. True. LA has many boxy buildings with flat rooftops as does Houston. But LA's skyline just has more variety as it shows in the picture I provided.

1.Chicago really does it for me- Dynamic, ever-changing , incredible variety, history, instantly recognizable buildings, impressive height. It's almost like the skyline was formed delicately to please any enthusiast. These buildings were "cooked with love"
2. New York will always secretly be my #1 but that is just my biased opinion. It's a farmiliar site so it's tough for me not to be in love with it regardless of how "dated" folks think it is. It's been adding and filling itself up for 100 years and it isn't stopping anytime soon. This place has such a tremendous "head start" on the rest of the country. Untouchable really.

3. Toronto: Traveling there recently I am really impressed with the way things are going up there. The actualy skyline is huge and I might get my head chewed up on here for it but I actually find the skyline to be rather underrated. The Cn tower is finally becoming a central focal point with the city place construction and other developments south west of the tower.

And in no particular order

San Francisco
Philadelphia
Atlanta
Seattle
Los Angeles
Montreal
and Miami,Florida.

^^ Those deserve mention as well.

This is why I think the NYC skyline is the best in the world. Chicago is a close second but Chicago's skyline is anywhere near the size and density of NYC's skyline. The Chicago skyline is more beautiful though but I like the sense of power the NYC skyline gives off. Also, no other city in the world does Art Deco and Beaux-Arts, my two favorite architectural styles, better than NYC! Finally, I love all the spires!

With mine, I would put NYC over Chicago. Yes Chicago has a nice cluster and does not have that multiple skyline feature that NY has but NY has some of the best skyscraper collection. NY is home to some of the world's greatest scrapers, The ESB and Chrysler.

WTC is gone but another supertall is taking it's place. Though I don't feel The Freedom Tower's design.

Chicago and New York are impressive but I would not say they are the best. I find Chicago's boring and boxy with a few exceptions on the skyline. New York's has a similar architectural style throughout with some jewels sticking out. Everyone knows the Empire State.

But my choice goes to San Francisco. I like how they use the setting for the skyline and how the skyline fits in. The architecture is just beautiful.

I wouldn't think the suburban parts of NYC can beat Times Square's crowds and liveliness. It's pretty quiet in Connecticut where I lived. I also wouldn't consider sprawl developments lively either. They may be lively with cars but how many people do you see strolling along the street outdoors?

Vancouver has a larger skyline as it has a lot of residentials along both the main and False Creek waterfronts. What makes it unique is the use of glass and the young age of so many of the buildings in the skyline. I don't like skylines that have disproportionate attention on a few very tall buildings if there is nothing else to accompany them. A skyline is about an entire built-up area. A supertall doesn't make a good skyline if it's very lonely. I don't think it's even fair to judge a skyline based on a few landmark buildings only.

Actually, Seattle's mountain backdrop looks further away from the city centre than Vancouver. Vancouver's hills rise very quickly just north of the downtown core across the water. For example, Grouse Mountain offers a panoramic view of the whole city and it's reachable by city bus.

While Seattle's mountains are just a bit further away, the city has beautiful views looking west toward the Olympics, east toward the Cascades, south to Ranier and the isthmus that the city occupies is almost completely surrounded by water. I Love our skyline and I think it's even more impressive when considering the actual size of Seattle. Nice, sleek and modern mixed with historic and soon to be much more residential buildings. Architecturally more impressive IMO.

Vancouver's mountains are closer and therefore more dramatic, but only impressive looking toward the north and there is not as much water around the city. Both cities surroundings are great though.

Agree on all but the last part. Vancouver has a lot of waterfront settings. The main harbour area towards the north is a good vantage point with mountains on one side and the skyline on the other. Then there is False Creek in the south and more bays to the east towards Coquitlam. Then the Fraser River's mouth opens up further south of downtown in Richmond. The Strait of Georgia borders to the west, so there is quite a lot of water frontage. But then, the skyline looks best if viewed from a higher vantage point over Richmond looking north, capturing the skyline with the mountains. The view south from North Vancouver / Stanley Park captures the whole skyline, but is missing the mountain backdrop.

I would say Chicago has the more impressive skyline...nothing in New York really stands out anymore and I would even say that it is a little dated. NYC is still the coolest, most cosmopolitan city in the US though but I don't think its skyline is the best anymore...

Correct. As a city NY is clearly NA's greatest and there is really no argument or discussion there. However Chicago has a definitely superior skyline.

put it like this. From the top of the Hancock you look ACROSS at the Aon, the Sears and the Loop whereas from the ESB you look DOWN at Midtown. That's the difference. Chicago is taller.

I don't place toronto third. For me both Seattle adn vancouver have better skylines.

It is quite interesting that Seattle shows up on a lot of these lists. (Not that I disagree), but Seattle's city and metro population are not even in the top 10 in the U.S.! I think the skyline is great, but the surroundings bring it up a notch. Plus, it is one of just a handful of U.S. cities that continue to build multiple large projects. And edge city, Bellevue, across Lake Washington, is quickly becoming a very dense and tall suburb...never will be Seattle, but I believe there is more office/residential built (and planned) in Bellevue than in all of downtown Portland, OR. (I guess Boeing, Microsoft, and Starbucks must be doing quite well!)

Charlotte is quite an emerging financial services hub these days.

Nice, but your Indy and Cleveland skylines just don't display much density. But atleast they look better than 20 years ago. (I do like the tall building in Cleveland...Key Center, I believe the tallest building between Chicago and New York City!).

It's now HQ for Bank of America which is one of the largest US banks.

Wachovia also has a big operation in Charlotte as well, and they're up there on the tallest skyscraper rankings.

Bank of America still trails the leading American bank by a few hundred billion in assets :

Citibank has a more prominent international retail operation as well.

True but Cleveland has at least one skyscraper over 700 ft.

Milwaukee also has a skyscraper over 600 ft. but it's skyline doesn't have much density.

Another underrated skyline would be Tulsa, Oklahoma

my list:
1. chicago
2. NYC
3. T-O
4. calgary

and btw...vancouver never would be able to be near the top on my list...most of its buildings are res...it hardly has any commercial core (all of its comming to calgary )

But Vancouver has a nice natural setting :)

Probably posted some of these earlier :

The funny thing about north-american skylines is the skyscraper in the (financial) centre and around it mostly 2 storage buildings. There is (in my opinion) no coherence in most cities.

Yes, the density dies off pretty quickly with parking lots and warehouses against very tall skyscrapers. Quite ironic, isn't it?

The parking alot I agree but not much of the storage warehouses. This is common in alot of US cities but those that come to my mind are Texas cities such as Houston or Dallas.

Actually, warehouses are still fairly common especially among port cities. New York has a whole bunch of those overlooking the Manhattan skyline across the river in Brooklyn, for example.

They still do unless they convert the warehouses into galleries or any commercial use just like what they did in The Enbarcadero in San Francisco.

Warehouses in downtown waterfront cities is a common sight. The Embarcadero was beautified because the freeway was too badly damaged in the 89 quake. Even now, there are still a number of warehouses in the area alongside the promenade, palm-tree-lined streets, and the historic streetcar line.

San Francisco's newly born waterfront boulevard is not full of restaurants and art galleries. A lot of the warehouses remain, and are closed off from the public, so while people are bicycling and strolling along the shores, they can't venture into these buildings. The activity begins to pick up along the western edge of the waterfront around Fisherman's Wharf .. surprise surprise.

I'm pretty surprised San Diego was never mentioned in this thread. Obviously it is not in the same league as New York or Chicago regarding height/density. What it lacks in those categories it makes up for in uniqueness and photographic quality. Certainly San Diego is more impressive than some cities that were mentioned including Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Tulsa, Pittsburgh, Denver or Cleveland (Cleveland has some tall buildings, but my god is that city ugly. I am convinced that their football team is named not for Paul Brown, but for the color of the city when seeing it from the air)

San Diego has a nice mid-rise skyline but again, the city lacks height.
